An interesting video. I remember seeing these occarisionally when I was young - I was puzzle why some said Floride and others, Caravelle - Even though the Caravelle is probably a better car, with its purposeful looking vents on the side - and If you have to have a roof, the more graceful roofline, it's a much purer design.
While watching, I was already thinking that my Megane CC was its spiritual successor and then, later in the video, I find you concur. My CC is a 2007 and was 12 years old when I bought it. I didn't expect it to drive well and thought that it would probably be troublesome but, I was wrong on both counts. Almost 5 years later, and with double the mileage it had on it when I spent my 900 euro - I love it.

in 1968 when I was seven one of my uncles bought one of these. Him and his gorgeous wife looked so stylish driving around the streets of north Tehran. Now he’s 93 with Alzheimers can’t even remember the car.

By far the prettiest Renault ever produced. They were also quite popular in the South Pacific.

We hardly noticed the Floride because it managed to rot way at breakneck speed, even faster than the Dauphine on which it was based. I never saw a Floride which was not riddled with rust.

The 1964 movie, "Kawaita Hana" (Pale Flower) brought me here. As it appeared in the movie, I saw a cabriolet version of the Renault Dauphine. In Japan, it was a perfect fit, like the much later Nissan Figaro. (Seen on season 12 of "Aibou/Partners.") Long ago, in my college days, I recall seeing Renault Dauphines and at least one Caravelle on/near campus. So, the Renault Floride was aimed at the "short of money" working class, from a sedan chassis, (sorta) like Mazda's Miata/MX-5?

Consider what happened to Renault while they were government owned, quality continued to fall while prices went up, no money was available to develop engines and other major components. French tax law was punitive against larger engines, so French cars were made with engines to small for markets like Germany or the US. Where they were competitive was not enough of a market to support an auto industry.

      S. Baker hit it on the head...They did LOOK nice.... but Gov't owned... there was a reason they wouldn't let competition happen from dependable car companies come in. I owned an Alliance that I rebuilt and a Fuego I rebuilt both had less than 10k when the troubles began and went on and on, bought Nissans, Toyota's EVEN a couple Vette's... NEVER the kinds of problems like these P.O.S's.... There was a good reason that after 5 years most of them were in the Boneyard.
