Great review. I am really on the fence on this one, but am thinking of getting it. The FOV for me is huge and this does that along with a great resolution. The only concern I have is the FPS at 75. Does the image differ greatly from the straight 4k vs the upscaled image that is able to run at higher FPS? Thanks
For games like Beat Saber I think I would prefer 118 Hz at upscaled mode, but I don't have it now, going to buy this month, so have to test it. Also I play Expert+ maps mostly so for me the difference should be noticeable.
@@travism70 Hey Travis do you have one? Is it a huge difference between upscaled and 4k? I would think the upscaled image is still way better than say a Valve Index. With no screen door, better FOV, better color etc. Is that the case?
@@johnambers I have the 8kx but I honestly haven't even bothered with the upscaled mode. The native image is great and the 75 hz has been perfectly fine and feels completely smooth to me in game. IMO the wide fov and native 4k image are the stars of the headset
1440p upscaled to 4K would theoretically look the same as 1440p with the most basic upscaling algorithm (just multiply the pixels) just with a different screendoor effect characteristic. Typically the higher res screens have much lower screendoor effect so you could theoretically get a nicer image. If they use an advanced upscaling algorithm, like Nvidia's DLSS where it predicts where extra pixels would be, then it could have an increase in detail resolution at the expense of introducing visual artifacts where the prediction is inaccurate. The algorithm would basically have to predict curves of more points from fewer points, and would have to add in details in textures from a less detailed texture. Considering there are infinite ways to connect two points, you can imagine the guess can be inaccurate. FPS matters on what kind of games you play. The faster paced the game where response time is important, the better higher FPS will be (e.g. table tennis). I know Oculus made a big deal about 90fps being a minimum based on their research but have since released headsets with 72~80fps since CV1 so... Obviously there are compromises. I've used Oculus Quest at 72fps and for me it's passable.
First you show a video throught the lense where screen door is clearly visible and then some photos that seem out of focus and claim there is no screen door? i mean the pixel grid is annoying even on my G2 for me. Is this better?? thx
@@martinkulik9466 i have both and quest 2 has lots of screen door, i can even focus on pixels in it, however in the g2 i can only see a grid, the pixels are too small to focus on but they are still clearly visible

I am fine with the screen now. reason I didnt buy quest 1 was pixelation. they could learn from pimax also to include the internal foaming, because that's another thing, but binocular effect and fov are my main concerns for quest 2 right now. pixelation is fine, you have to focus on it to see it and it's not distracting.
@@martinkulik9466 quest 2 have screen door effect. just look like you put your eye distance 35cm from a monitor 27inch, 1080p. so still can see screen door effect. but already far better than my old oculus go.
Very nice review but there was no comparison with the 8k+. How much better is a native 4k compared to upscaled and how higher the fps get with it. It seams like someone with a 3080 gpu will have a better experience overall with the 8k+ than with the 8kX and most important, less expensive.
In my experience the 8kx is sharper but so sharp I can see the pixels. My 8k× is less sharp and very hard to see pixels. I would go for the 8kx though.
The last time I looked in on the 8K X specs, the one disappointment was the lower FPS in full 4K (8K) native mode--75 FPS as I recall. I had the idea at the time that this constraint was actually due to the general inability of affordable graphics cards inability to crank out the pixels...but now that the Nvidia 3000 series are here, I would guess that's no longer a problem--if you can afford an 8K X, the cost of most 3000's isn't that prohibitive. Which begs the question: CAN the 8K X now be run at 90 or even 120Hz in full native mode, or are we still restricted to 75 FPS due to slow arrival of the drivers, or to some hardware limitation on the headset I'm not aware of? THX for any replies or links to more answers about this.
The 75Hz refresh rate is due to various hardware level limitations. You gotta think about the amount of data being transferred over the from the GPU through the cable into the the HMDs chipset. First off the Pimax 8K-X is equipped with a DisplayPort 1.3 cable as is both the Gen 1 HP Reverb and the Reverb G2 (Higher res screens). The Oculus Rift S and Valve Index use DisplayPort 1.2 (Lower res screens). DisplayPort 1.2 has a max supported bandwidth of 21.6Gbps and a max data rate of 17.28Gbps. DP 1.3/1.4 has a max supported bandwidth of 32.40Gbps with a max data rate of 25.92Gbps. DP 2.0 will have a max bandwidth of 80Gbps and a max data rate of 77.37Gbps. The more data that can be transferred allows for an increase in support at higher resolutions, for higher refresh rates. For example, with DP 2.0, we'll be able to run two native 4K displays up to 120hz, 10bpc, with HDR enabled. This can be broken down even further to the finer details but I'd rather not get into that right now. You can look that up yourself if you're truly interested. Otherwise, I'd be writing a little book lol. Edit: Almost forgot, that means that all devices would have to support DP 2.0. So that mean the GPU would have to support DP 2.0 (Which *none* of the current models do. Both AMD and Nvidia's latest and greatest "available" cards are spec'd with DP 1.4 ports with DSC (Display Stream Compression....Again, not going to go into full detail but DCS is a method of compressing data to allow even higher resolutions such as 8K to run at 60Hz and 4K to run at 120Hz with HDR enabled) the HMD would have to have to be equipped with a DP 2.0 Cable or a Type C cable running in "Alt Mode" (which can provide power/charging via the cable as well on top of video & audio data transfer like the Oculus Quest 1&2). And finally, the chipset on the HMD's mainboard must also support DP 2.0 in order for this to all work. But of course the manufacturers wouldn't supply a DP 2.0 cable when the actual headset itself couldn't receive that input. Here are some links for ya as well: uploadvr.com/displayport-2-0/ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort news.developer.nvidia.com/dsc-higher-fidelity-vr/ www.benq.com/en-us/knowledge-center/knowledge/usb-c-introduction-what-is-dp-alt-mode.html And you're welcome! 🤗
@@DJHeroMasta Hardware limitations are exactly what I was thinking about, and I think you nailed the bottleneck right there--bandwidth. Even if I had a quad SLI 3080ti rig (I know Nvidia doesn't do quad SLI anymore, but you get the idea)...the limitation would be the pixel-passing power of the 1.3 Display Port itself. If the next version of the 8K X (call it the 8K X2) moves to DP 2.0, it's still not clear to me a triple-sizing of the pixel-pushing pipe would be enough to allow an increase in the framerate. It seems to me if the HMD itself can run its screens @120Hz in one of its modes, it is probably capable of running both screens @120Hz even in full-native mode, provided all the pixels are there for each refresh, so I've assumed the HMD itself has no hardware limitations in and of itself...of course I could be wrong, too, as maybe they just haven't bothered yet to make that possible, since all the required pixels just can't get there...yet. Which leaves me wondering if the move to DP 2.0 and TWO DP on the HMD would be enough to get it done. Hmmmm. Of course that would probably require TWO video cards also...whether SLI or not. Hmmmmmm. I probably couldn't afford all that right now anyway, but it's interesting to speculate. In any case, thanks for your very informative reply. Much appreciated.
@@kcsnow9447 Now we get 90 Hz. Are you happy now? But a 3090 can't reach stable 75 in some games even on Normal FoV, so maybe with small fov you can reach 90 fps not only in Beat Saber.
@@martinkulik9466 Oculus had hiccups for me when I was trying to use it in Steam VR, not to mention it’s a pain to lose 2 USB ports for Cameras, which also means more wires running from my computer. Granted, I haven’t used my CV1 in probably a year or more, so more software development from both Oculus and Valve may make it more stable, but in general, it was hit or miss on anything outside of Oculus’s wall garden. It would constantly forget which audio source was the headset and which was my TV, but it would still flip between the two when you activated or deactivated the headset, but that meant audio would be on the headset when I used the TV, and then on the TV when I used the headset. Very annoying. The Quest 2 apparently has phantom issues for some people, like updates not revealing new features. And yeah, giving all your info to Facebook is a hard pass for me.
@@killerconico5073 I've got it today, now need some time for testing, but first impression: wow, there is no SDE and huge FOV. And bad sound. But I've knew it, going to use my own headphones. And it's quite heavy, compare to Oculus CV1.
So the reason I didn't pull the trigger on this isn't really the price but because it didn't seem to offer the strict best in every field. 75 refresh rate just seems a bit lacking compared to most headsets and while it obviously has the widest field of view the hp reverb seems to have it beat in terms of visuals. If you try for the upscale mode then the visuals also take a hit. If pimax could create a headset that could match the visuals of the g2 with maybe a 100 hz refresh rate I think I would buy it immediately.

Super useful, especially given Pimax's cost and reputation. Not the sort of purchase you want to go into without all the information. Thanks!
amazing review, said everything and more, just needed to know more about the performance.
Because even a 3090 was suffering.
With 3090 you can have 90hz now in nativ mode
What about the visual distortion at the sides? Is that still a thing, or has it improved?
Much improved I only see it a little bit.
What software are you using on the left side in the performance test part? Also very nice headset collection!
I always just cut the lights off which takes away from all the light entering the VR Headset!
My friend your videos are amazing. Only contructive advice would be timestamps. For later reference
Thx for this review , all you need now is to test it with the eye tracking module, but didn't you had made this earlier ?
Thx for this review !
You should have tested it with foveated rendering on too, for the comparison.
Great review. I am really on the fence on this one, but am thinking of getting it. The FOV for me is huge and this does that along with a great resolution. The only concern I have is the FPS at 75. Does the image differ greatly from the straight 4k vs the upscaled image that is able to run at higher FPS? Thanks
The visual downgrade doesn't merit the increased fps IMO
I've used Oculus Quest at 72fps and for me it's passable.
is it plug and play for my ms2020 flight simulator and will my graphics card have all the connectors ? that it is required
It works easily with msfs. For graphics card, you need a 3000 series really for msfs.
Thank you Really informative video
Would you buy it if you already had an Index? Mostly for Sim Racing.
First you show a video throught the lense where screen door is clearly visible and then some photos that seem out of focus and claim there is no screen door? i mean the pixel grid is annoying even on my G2 for me. Is this better?? thx
I thought g2 is better than quest 2 and quest 2 has no screen door
@@martinkulik9466 i have both and quest 2 has lots of screen door, i can even focus on pixels in it, however in the g2 i can only see a grid, the pixels are too small to focus on but they are still clearly visible
Of course both are miles away from my rift s but still not there for me
@@Gregoses the only issue with quest 2 for me is binocular effect. I am fine with the screen now. reason I didnt buy quest 1 was pixelation. they could learn from pimax also to include the internal foaming, because that's another thing, but binocular effect and fov are my main concerns for quest 2 right now. pixelation is fine, you have to focus on it to see it
and it's not distracting.
@@martinkulik9466 quest 2 have screen door effect. just look like you put your eye distance 35cm from a monitor 27inch, 1080p.

8k+ pixel density are simillar to quest 2.
pixel density=resolution/fov

Pimax 8K X is double the price of G2, and it can't rund solid 90 fps even with the best graphic card of the world as you can see in this video. Its a waste of time, 4k displays 200º FOV is the future, but not at this momment because we don't have the hardware to run it.
