Such an interesting video and topic, I had no idea! It reminds me of a story I learnt whilst researching the Sinai-Palestine campaign during the First World War. Following the campaign and for that matter the war, men of the Australian Light Horse who had been with their horses for up to 3 years at this point were forced to leave them behind and return home. Because the priority of transport home were given to the massive amount of men that needed to be moved, the horses (that couldn't be sold to the locals or placed elsewhere) were to be executed. They would be taken to large execution pits. One man, who's name escapes me, wrote that as he was leading his horse to the firing pit its ears would flicker as it had done during battle.

My husband was in Bosnia and he said there were no pets, no birds, no livestock...no animals of any kind because there had been no food for such a long time

My wife & I have been taking in (a variety of) rescue animals for 30 years now. And we have a household evacuation plan. The plan does NOT include leaving furry/feathered/scaled children behind. Ever.

I can't imagine what it must've been like to be in that position, on top of everything else. This was heartbreaking. The Beans footage was much appreciated

I had read about this a few years ago. I remember thinking how awful the choices people had to make. I believe that is why the British are such animal lovers today.

This is heartbreaking and, unfortunately, almost predictable. It's understandable as to why this story was left to gather dust. No one wanted to remember the terrible choices that war forces individuals into. Good lecture, have you considered looking into a book grant? I'm off to cuddle our two guinea pig sisters after this is done...
The bundle mummified children of Peru are both heartbreaking and beautiful. The children were sent off into eternity, wrapped around a mummified guinea pig to keep them company.

I've considered putting something like a book together for the history of animal welfare, but I have so many plates spinning right now that it's been scooted to the back burner. But perhaps one day! Give the piggies a cuddle for me!

@@professorpeachez They say 'meep' in return and then commanded carrots appear in their bowl (they are oh, so regally our boss).
Keep the book in a 'work on it when you're bored' category. Sketch out a table of contents maybe... definitely something for the back comments

I wonder if any breeds died out during this time. I don't know anything about dog and cat breeds.

Thank you for an fascinating video. Interestingly my mother, who was a young woman when war broke out, and quite often talked about those years (we had a good relationship and she knew I was interested) She once said to me how hard it was having a dog at that time. I now wonder if she had Bunch put down? Or thought about it? I know she said it was difficult to feed a dog with off-ration food. My parents lived out at Twickenham so didn’t see the level of bombing that central and east London received. You have got me thinking about nuanced conversations of a few years ago now.
