I think anyone can become a good singer with enough practice, as long as they understand the limitations and qualities of their own voice.

+Kid and a Squid now but that means not everyone is a good singer then. if someone's limit is very low or they are monotone then they are not a good singer.

MiyukiItachi There are many different styles of singing, and not all of them involve hitting the highest notes or having the most range. Just my opinion.

Well you atleast seem to manage it from time to time xD
i was a very good singer while i was young in school, but since i hit puberty i
can't change frequency at all. all i can do now is hold a very dark tone
(low frequency) but as soon as i try to climb alittle i can't even make a peep.
There must be a physical change that prevents me from singing
properly because i don't get any progress from training what so ever.
Makes me greeen. i miss being able to sing D:

Due to those genetics, and resonate cavities, one will have a more pleasing tone. One could sing on pitch, but matbe not in a pleasing tone. Pleasing is subjective. You can have someone study and practice for years, then an 8 year old comes and blows them out the water. (subjective)

  • @TheMimeTroupe
    @TheMimeTroupe 9 лет назад +19

After spending years training to be an opera singer, I am convinced that good singing can be taught unless you are one of the very few who are actually tone deaf. Practice certainly helps, but having a teacher who understands the anatomy of the voice and how it works makes a huge difference. Physiological differences like size of the chest cavity and shape of the head may affect the quality of the voice and make some aspects of singing easier, but that doesn't mean your voice will be objectively worse, less healthy, or off pitch. You just have to adapt to your unique sound instead of trying to imitate someone else's.

I think growing up in a musical environment will condition your brain to pitch. We had a piano at home and all of my siblings and me grew to have excellent relative pitch. Music is a language and like any language, if you're exposed to it from a young age, it comes easy.

Exactly it’s a gift sometimes in families there will be multiple such as sisters or brothers that can all sing. Im a singer and have been since the age of 6. My mom can’t sing at all, while my father can sing.

  • @lars9943
    @lars9943 6 лет назад +5

There's also a difference between people who can sing 'technically' well (a.k.a. keep up pitch, sustain and vibrato) and people who have a 'likable voice'. The latter is what matters to the majority of humans, you are not going to listen to a voice that doesn't sound fitting to the music, even when it is perfectly in pitch. So singing is indeed a craft, but also a gift in a way. Because no matter how hard you train, you can't really change your vocal characteristics. Unless you're going to fake it of course, but why do that? 'perfect pitch' singers are perfect for backing vocals.

I have been singing all my life for the past 30 years. In my opinion almost everyone can be a good singer. Some just need to work harder at practicing. Some are born needing only little practice. We are all capable of doing what we like if we put our heart into it.

I was raised in a music loving family, so I grew up around it and loved it. I remember being 10 and deciding I wanted to be a singer (I had been in choir since kindergarten) and singing along with the music on the radio and acapella and sounding awful. haha! I stayed in choir and sang opera in highschool as well as choir. I could carry a tune, but I really didn't find my voice until I was in my mid 20's... but no matter how good I am, I can't just bust out singing and sound good, I have to practice and warm up.

Ian Kim No, a vowel sound, so not all "U" words are applicable here. In the case of "U" it would have to be an "Uhh" sound, whereas Ukulele starts with a "Yook" sound.
For example you would say "an umbrella" but you would not say "an unicorn".

I was curious about this! I always used to think that I couldn't sing well. People used to tell me too. Then I decided to start playing guitar and got so obsessed with it, I would play and sing each day for at least an hour, alone in my room. I was too afraid to get out. But at some point I did have the courage to sing in front of people. Now people are very impressed with my voice which was such a suprise for me the first time I heard them say I could actually sing.
Conclusion: I think a very big part of my singing abilities come from lots and lots of practice.

I assure you that no amount of practice will allow me to sing well or to even hear pitch. In grade school I used to “talk sing”-I didn’t even realize there were specific notes being hit, I just knew it was going up a bit and down a bit. I know I would fail even the “slide-rule” test because I already have.
I play piano and compose, and my disability is an obvious problem in my life. While trying to learn a song once I spent over 1 hour trying to figure out a note, playing every note in an octave on my piano and looping the original note in a recording. I couldn’t get it for an hour until finally I realized it was the same note as before only 1 octave higher.
However, all that being said, I have fully mastered the technical side of piano, and can play any song of any difficulty, including the hardest piano song there is: soundcloud.com/l-spiro/hungarian-rhapsody-no-2

In my own study, there is an tell-tell on singers, on the basic day to day tone can tell about someone's vocalization ability. Some people that a multiply resonate voice tend have wider range, I mean by at least 10 different tone A example of this is in movie of Wily Wonka & Chocolate factory and the remake Veruca Salt as the first one voice had the multi-resonate, the second one the tone was a shorter and had three tone. As the first was sleighed to sing in elimination moment

You ignored the color of the voice. I'm able to have a perfect pitch, and people still says I suck, because they don't like the color of my voice. Also the range, which can even thou it can be expanded with practice, is almost completely limited by the physical properties of your vocal cords.

I think that some singers are born with the right features and dimensions, but develop it over time, hence being able to sing.

So this is about pitch matching, which is easy enough, but what about perfect pitch? I suppose part of it would just be long-term pitch memory, but I just can't quite do it.

It's a bit of both, practice and born with the skill. But I think it doesn't always have to be both. I think I wasn't born with the right vocal cords to be a singer when I was young. I tried singing when I was a kid and teenager and sucked it. I even went to karaoke with friends as a young adult and I think I sounded horrible.
But with time, I would sing in my car, sing in the shower, sing when I was alone at home and lately, after the age of 30, I noticed that I can sing pretty good! I also do many deep voice imitations such as Duke Nukem, Arnold Swarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, the "Hey hey, welcome to CRAAAAAAAAAAAZY taxi! Are you ready? Here we go!!!" and a couple more. These are things I couldn't do when I was younger but somehow manage to do today cause I just practiced it over and over again when I was alone and now I'm a pro at it.
Oh and what do I sing? Umm.......... Barry White........ Elvis.............. LOOK I can also sing like James Hetfield Post-Black Album Metallica, I do can death metal vocals, Marilyn Manson, Dave Mustaine from Megadeth. But when I want to swoon a lady, I'm gonna sing Barry White and Elvis. It gets them so wet!

Indeed, singing also engages muscles, it's like a sport. In that sense, (most) people can get better at sport by practicing, but there are reasons why some athletes are competing in tje Olympic Games, some people can only compete with their children.

I think what makes a really good singer is a mix of genetic and skill factors. Technically anyone can sing, but there's a lot of technique that goes into making it sound great, and genetic factors will determine your ability to use those techniques.

    • @EgginYourBeer

that's probably a good thing because when you're singing along then you're not listening to yourself, meaning you won't over anticipate a note so you'll be more relaxed and hit the note or pitch with more ease.

Singing is 80% born 20% technique. the size on the mouth, the size on the inner mouth, how big your tongue is, the shape of the soft palate, how well does your vocal cord vibrate and close (naturally), flexibility of the vocal cord, how healthy your sinus is, how big your pharynx is ... etc.
A simple example would be a crappy guitar that has bad acoustic, bad string, bad wood, playing C chord v.s a Gibson guitar playing C chord. The Gibson would be considered as a person who can sing because it SOUNDS GOOD and the crappy guitar would be a person who CANT because it SOUNDS BAD, even though they are BOTH doing the same thing and playing the same chord.

I've always been able to sing in pitch, yet I didn't use to have a strong voice. A couple years ago I started emulating power house singers like Sia and by doing so I kinda figured out their singing technique and am now able to sing with a powerful voice too. So I think that's two different things, singing in tune and having a good voice. I was born with the former and had to teach myself the latter. Maybe for some people it's the other way around. Yet I think that practice is always a factor for every singer.
