Avignonesi is a super special wine brand for me. The VNdM was always a favourite of my wife and I for special occasions, and when I lost her in 2018, the wines took on an even deeper meaning. In 2019/21 I was lucky to be living in Florence for a time and I went to the Avignonesi winery in Valiano, and the staff were amazing. I was able to sprinkle some of her ashes in the La Tonda vineyard and spent some thinking & reflecting there. I was also able to enjoy a fantastic behind the scenes winery tour. Avignonesi will always be special to me. Thank you for this episode which prompted so many good memories.
Matthew, I have enjoyed so many of your shows but this touched my heart. It's obvious that you love Italy and Sangiovese. This is your best video by far.
Love these videos in Italy. Last year I had gotten more into French wines. But Italian cuisine has always been one of my favorites and seeing your videos and made me switch back to Italian wines.
Great episode with intriguing stories, Matthew!!! It was such a pleasure to meet you in person this September at Avignonesi! Keep up the great work, and I can't wait for more! Cheers from Montepulciano!!!

Just ordered 12 bottles of VINO NOBILE DI MONTEPULCIANO DOCG by Avignonesi 2018. Will let you know my thoughts. I had the Rosso and your description on Vivino was spot on!!
Was in Tuscany in October and did a few wine trips.. Casanova di Neri being the highlight.. Great food, great wine, beautiful scenery, fantastic hospitality.. Great that 15 and 16 vintages have reminded ppl how great Brunello wines are. Very much overlooked and under appreciated

We had wine dinner at Villa Antinori , their 300 year old winery . After I bought several cases of Sassicaia, And other high end super Tuscans….he started pouring …we had great time!
Hi Mathew! Really enjoyed this video! I mentioned to you I worked for Piancornello and while I worked there I worked a bit at Osticcio wine shop in Montalcino. It is owned by Tullio Scrivana. He took me to Biondi Santi as he had worked there earlier in his life. Where are you based out of yourself?
@@drmatthewhorkey If you haven't attended it before, Montalcino has a tasting called Benvenuto Brunello that the lions share of producers bring their wines to taste. Awesome opportunity to get your Sangiovese Grosso thing on!
I've got a question for you Matthew. In your travels, do you give tastings? I've just taken over the wine program in a new place in Iowa, on the edge of Des Moines. We are creating events and I didn't know if you give tastings or travel through Iowa between say Minneapolis, Chicago, Omaha and Kansas City? The thought just crossed my mind...

This is a wonderful episode ! Great work! I’ve only had one or two Biondi Santi Brunellos and don’t have any ageing. Jealous!
hahahah, I'm sure you have nothing to be jealous about as you drink well!

I love the pasta too! I love Italy entirely. Spent 3 months down South in 2021, miss it.
Ahhhh where in the south? I love the food in the south too
Big fan of Sangiovese definitely ! Plenty of great bottles and tips there. However these tomato ... Better than my tomatoes ? :p
hahahahah different, Tuscan ones are more acidic while yours have more sweetness...
"The more you know, the less you don't know." I like the wines made with the Sangiovese grape.
Me too!
Did you try the Col d Orcia Brunello while you were there? It’s quite amazing.
Not this time but I’ve had it a lot before!
Biondi-Santi.. Even the labels are beautiful
Yum yummmmm, you are right
Looks like great experience, very jealous
Well you can relive the experiences through tasting the wines!

I travel full time but this last year I spent a lot of time in USA… Very very cool that you worked there. Montalcino is quite secluded.

Brunello CIACCI PICCOLOMINI is a fantastic red wine🇮🇹viva🇮🇹
👏🏼
Biondi Santi no longer accepting visitors!? 😮
I think it’s only trade, media, and relationship driven
Correct me if I'm wrong but they have one of the worst/inconsistent Chardonnay
Their Chardonnay isn’t my favorite either
Let us know when you’ll be able to reenact the whole episode sans mask. Just awful watching all the masks.
