  • What you need to know about registering your car in Florida is the topic of today's video. If you are thinking about moving to Florida and you are bring a vehicle or vehicles with you then you are probably wondering what has to be done in order to transfer your out of state license to Florida and what the process to registering your car in Florida is. In this video I take you throught the whole process that Josue and I recently went through in order to switch everything over from New York to Florida including getting our Florida drivers license, transferring the out of state title to Florida, registering our car, and getting our new Florida license plate. I also break down the cost of everything including how much it cost to transfer our drivers license, how much it cost to transfer our title, and how much it cost to register our car. If you are also wondering what documentation you will need to register your car in Florida and change over your license, I also go over that documentation in this video as well. I pretty much go over what you need to know about registering your car in Florida. I know it may sound a little daunting, so let me help you and walk you through the process of registering your car in Florida.

    I hope this video was helpful! If you have any other questions outside of what I talked about in the video, you can definitely leave them and maybe someone else can answer from their experience! However, my knowledge ends with my experience. I will help with what I can, but I do not work for the office so I don’t have all the answers to the more intricate questions. If you feel I forgot to mention anything, then I probably didn’t experience it because I went into all the details. 😊 thanks again for watching!

    its 2024 and appointments are still required. also if you do not have the documents to verify residency you can go to the county recorder (I think) and get a sworn affidavit. Also its still extremely expensive to do a first time registration and trust me the a police everywhere that will pull you over to ask questions about your out of state licence plate.

    Another cost to keep in mind is the sales tax in FL for cars is 6%. So if you recently got a new car (I think within 6 months), you have to pay the difference in sales tax on your price of the car between your old and new state. Can rack up quickly if your state has a low tax for cars

    Another thing to keep in mind is insurance cost, it probably won’t be a huge deal for people old enough to have the cheaper insurance but mine goes up almost double, from about $130 how I have it configured here in NC to about $250. If you’re pinching pennies I’d recommend calling and getting a quote, then making sure you have about another 20% in case it goes up. All in all I’d recommend having $1000 just in case if you’re doing one vehicle.

    • @GeniseKrystalxo
      @GeniseKrystalxo  2 года назад

      Mine is currently at about $130/month for one vehicle insured under Geico, but we own our vehicle so we don't need to be insured up the wazoo like we did when we still had a lien on it.

    You didn't mention the $225.00 initial registration fee which is payable if the vehicle
    you are registering has never before been registered in Florida. Please correct me if i'm wrong.
    The part that I don't understand is: after paying this fee you'r able to transfer the tag to another vehicle. So if you were to sell or otherwise dispose of your current vehicle you
    could keep the Tag and use it on your replacement vehicle. and not have to pay it twice. Which happens to be in conflict with the law stating that the tag would have to be surrendered. Very confusing!
    I still have the tag from a vehicle that I sold over 2 years ago. Went down to the tax collectors office with the new owner to transfer title and register the car under his name.
    Nobody said anything to me about having to surrender tag. Nor was I ever sent anything
    in regard to surrender of tag when the my registration was expired and not renewed.
    It's maddening the way that they set this whole boondoggle up.
    And finally...You'r supposed to drive an unregistered untagged vehicle to the tax office so someone can verify the VIN, mileage?? any guidance you can give will be greatly appreciated1

  • @christianjackson4093
    @christianjackson4093 2 года назад +9

    I've been in Florida for a year and haven't gotten my FL tags registration yet... for damn good reason. The process has been insanely frustrating and reached a screeching halt when they turned me away after transferring my title because my dad wasn't present with me as he was the co-signer (he lives in Pennsylvania). So now I would have to get power of attorney in order to do something as simple as getting my registration and tags. Anyone else been through this debacle? Because I'm honestly just thinking of keeping my out of state plates and registration.

    • @GeniseKrystalxo
      @GeniseKrystalxo  2 года назад +2

      It can be frustrating jumping through all the hoops. I know, but I believe the power of attorney paperwork is something you can find online on their website and have your dad mail it to you signed. I would go through a little bit more of the stress if it saves me from the possible fines or legal repercussions later if I ever get pulled over. I mean, I obviously can't tell you what to do, but I'm personally too chicken to pull it off. lol

      We are with Geico. To keep the exact same insurance coverage that we had in NYC, we were looking at a small drop of around $30 monthly, which was still nice. However, being that we had paid off our car, we didn't feel we needed as much as we needed in NY, so we played with a couple of the limits, and are currently set to pay an average of $145/month as compared to the $220 we were paying in NY. And that includes myself and my husband.

      Yes. We did everything in one shot. We scheduled it under the card services or license services. I forget the exact wording. So here's my nightmare: I moved back to FL from NY and I found out they needed a 2nd proof of ID, either a passport or birth certificate. My car is paid off but has a lien on it so my lien holder is sending me a lien release letter which is what the FL tax collector needed. I do not have my birth certificate and neither parent knows where the hell my birth certificate is so I ordered a replacement from Vital Chek which is what the FL tax collector recommended. Meanwhile, I did the right thing and switched my car insurance from NY to FL before this nightmare began and that told NY to start telling me to send in my plates or maintain liability coverage on my car, which wasn't there. The birth certificate replacement and lien release letter will take 50-60 days I was told, and since I still have to go to work I'm stuck with my NY plates, while waiting on my documents! All I can think to do is put the liability insurance on my coverage again and hope NY goes away until I get my documents, wait it out, or if anyone has any other ideas please share because I don't want any fines from either state or anything else bad to happen. Thank you for any help!
