When I first joined martial arts I was so worried because I knew I was going to have to do a lot of pushups to learn that we had to do pushups on our knuckles or fingertips. That's great for strengthening your punches and ridge hands but in yoga I find myself needing the balance of my palm and fingers and had been worried about hurting my wrists. Thank you for this video.
Thank you so much for this awesome explanation! Before I started doing Yoga, I did a lot of bodyweight exercises including planks, push-ups, etc. My wrists always hurt after a few minutes, but now that I now how to place and activate my hands on the floor, all the pain and uneasiness is gone :)
Fabulous! Thank you so much. First time I have seen such a clear demonstration of the outer and inner arms rotation and the engagement of the fingers. Why other instructors don't focus on this is beyond me. It's so important. I've been doing it wrong all along (i.e., pulling my elbows behind).
Thank you, Esther. I love how thorough you are in your instruction. I sometimes have extreme pain in my wrist, hand and forearm, but thought it was Carpal Tunnel because I write by hand and type a LOT. But now I'm wondering if it's related to not having things aligned the way you describe. This is SO helpful for me to know what you've just shared. Something that seems such a small adjustment, but clearly can have tremendous impact. Thank you so much! You've helped me tremendously the past couple years since I found you in so many ways. You're the best. Blessings!
thank you this was super helpful. I’ve been doing yoga for a few years and nobody explained me the right, proper hand position and I’ve been having trouble with my hands, elbows and shoulders .lately
Thank you! During my daily yoga practice my wrist start hurts, now the pain still for almost 2 months! I gonna to put your advise on practice when I return to my yoga practice.
Very useful Esther, many thanks. I have several modifications/props for mitigating wrist pain for my students but this emphasis on the "cupping" of the palm, lifting the weight into fingertips and forearm, is a good reminder and really helpful.
Thank you very much for your sharing wrist strengthening excercises. I am an avid surfer and I am constantly applying pressure on my wrists. This helps me a great deal.
Thank you very much, this video is very helpful as I was getting a niggly pain in my left wrist, and doing it like you said, took the pressure off. Well explained!
Thank you for giving us a helpful hint to prevent injury. I need all the tips there are to protect my joints. This makes me want to know all the tips there are for an injury free workout.
Hi Esther! Thank you for sharing these tips. I always have wrist pain, so your clear and thorough explanations of how to protect wrists are much appreciated. Namaste :)
Thank you for the awesome explanation. I've had trouble finding a clear verbal description of the rotation of the forearm and upper arm. This is perfect.
this is great, especially with Robert as i was looking for this because my husband is complaining about the weight. This was shown perfectly what to do, thank you
Thank you so much for this video. I have elbow pain known as golfers elbow due to too much exertion on my wrist. Your technique helps a lot. Could you do a video to explain /show how to shift the weight away from the wrist in back bending drop back and urdha danurasana? I can't seem to apply it similarly in back bends.
Hi! Thank you for all your excellent videos, I truly enjoy them! I am generally quite flexible, but when it comes to positions with namaste on the back, my right wrist turns out to be less rotatable than the left, and it's quite painful. What can I do to make it equally flexible as the left? (I really want to do more than just holding onto my elbows.) Again, thank you!
Thank you, I have been looking for a good explanation of how to protect my wrists during yoga and this is great. Would you also be able to recommend any particular exercises to strengthen the wrists for arm balances? I really enjoy the challenge of balances but notice pain when I do them so I back off.

Is there soemthing you can do if you're already feeling a little bit of pain in the wrists? I've never been told how to properly protect my wirsts and this video is the first time I'm hearing any kind if advice but then again, my wrists feel sensitive now and there is a slight pain in both of them... any advice?
Very helpful video, thank-you for sharing! I am looking for help for hand placement ideas for dupitrin contracture (ring finger is semi flexed and will not straighten due to excess collagen) - do you have any ideas?
Thanks! I'm not familiar with that sorry so you might need to check with your doctor that this is ok to try - but props under the heels of your hands so that your fingers don't need to be straight could be something worth trying. You can get cork wedges could be helpful - or you can try folding a blanket across your mat so that the heels of your hands are on it in poses like downward dog. I made a video for yogamatters with one so you can see what I mean here www.yogamatters.com/cork-wedge.html Hope this helps
