    Thanks to my day job at Kelley Blue Book, I drive and review lots of cars. This 2020 Jeep Renegade is one of them. The 2020 Renegade a subcompact 5-passenger SUV. In this review, we examine the 2020 Renegade’s positives and negatives as a family SUV.
    Here’s our test car’s information explosion:
    Information Explosion
    2020 Jeep Renegade
    1.3L 4-cylinder Turbo
    177hp, 210 lb-ft
    9-Speed Automatic Transmission
    4-Wheel Drive
    (23city/29hwy)
    Base: $23,770 Sport Trim
    As-Tested: $36,110 Limited
    During our review of this 2020 Jeep Renegade we examined a range of practical details; passenger space, cargo space, infotainment, handling, steering, engine and transmission performance, overall refinement, and price. We also explored the 2020 Renegade’s seat comfort, how easy it is to install a child seat, and how easy it is for our daughter to climb aboard. How did it go? Watch and see. #MicahDrives

      On the car review itself... yeah Jeeps are unfortunately more expensive for whatever reason. This one is super cute though. I’d get the trail hawk edition though, though I don’t know if I would take anything on the rubicon other than a Wrangler or Gladiator... or something customized to be extremely off-road capable.

    As a Renegade Trailhawk owner of 2 years, I think you did a great review and you hit the nail on the head on one thing.... the transmission is ABYSMAL. It does crazy shifts all over the place, and at times hesitates so bad that it's dangerous. As a 9 speed you'd think it gets better gas mileage, but mine gets no where near the EPA estimates (other owners report wildly different mpg results). Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my Rene, but I also did my research before buying and knew what I was getting into. Also, sticker price on a Renegade is irrelevant... the MSRP is priced to be discounted. Sticker for my Trailhawk was $33.5 I left the dealership paying $24.6. Thanks for another fun review from you, the Mrs and the little one!

    • @ohc1492
      @ohc1492 4 года назад +1

      Well, that was a good deal. Here in Mexico prices are fixed, so there is no bargaining or negotiation. You can only control the time frame in which you choose to pay. I bought a Patriot in 2007 and was relatively affordable.. but nowadays.. I cannot afford even the lowest trim on this one with my income.. my other option being stuck in over 6 years of monthly payments.

      9 speed has 2 dog clutches shift points which do wait for sync longer then rest of the gears, so many people don't like the feel of it, i believe the latest models, or the tests of 2021s had reports of improvements

    • @La-yt1wr
      @La-yt1wr 4 года назад +1

      Check and see if your transmission needs a software update my mother's 2017 Chrysler 200S Awd just got one. And I don't like the ZF 9 speed but it's alot better paired to a V6 but it's horrid with a 4 cylinder and I'd rather purchase an FCA product with the ZF 8 speed.

      So, I own Upland 2019. The 9 speed has no issues with the 2.4L. I drive in CO in the mountains and feel its timing for shifts is actually quite impeccable. I have no complaints. I have taken it on some tough trails and it handles great as well. For anyone wanting to off-road, I would be careful of trims other than Sport, Upland or Trailhawk due to the front fascia hanging down on other models. Check models for things needed to off-road such as your skid plates. From what I know, only Upland and TH models come with them, but check first before heading up trails. In all, I have enjoyed it for my family and paid well below MSRP. They are priced to discount later.

    When I was test driving the jeep renegade I noticed a nice detail for families you missed. The front passenger seat actually flips up to reveal a big cubby space that would allow you to place your purse in, or your diaper bag. I believe most women would be extremely excited with this feature.
    Also, while I was test-driving it I did notice that, if you turn very quickly from side to side, you can feel a slight oversteer. You do not have to go very fast to feel it and I am not sure if it was just my test driving vehicle, but I thought it was very weird. If I were a professional car reviewer, I would investigate that further.

    just picked one out today- traded in my 2014 Jeep Sport Wrangler unlimited for it. I ended up with a new car and the dealer cutting me a check.. now- one could say a lot about that.. but I do really like this smaller car. and with my kids in driving age.. this is better for them. it was a Manual Trans.. so that is no longer an issue for the kids.. I do find the trans on the Renegade a bit spotty.. but I will get used to the time difference and adjust. after watching this I do wish I went with the 4WD but got the 2 cause really that is all I do... better MPG... thanks guys great vid - fun.. well done. keep it up I am sure you will.

    My family solved the transmission problem when we bought our Renegade by purchasing a lightly used one with a smooth shifting 6-Speed manual transmission since the new ones no longer offer a manual. We love our 4wd manual combined with 1.4L Turbo motor, fun to drive, great gas mileage and if it shifts poorly we can only blame our skills :)
    Also Pro Tip: Maximum Fun is using Sand Mode on slick snowy roads (of course ensuring it's somewhere safe to play). The throttle response is way different in Sand Mode and ESP is off. Good Times

  • @luchaDor
    @luchaDor 4 года назад +6

    A couple thoughts from an owner. First, nice review...I would highly recommend the 1.3L Turbo over the 2.4L just for the fact that it doesn't have the oil burn issues, that Some (not all) 2.4L's have. Seems to be a solid engine choice. I have noticed very occasional odd shifts in, but after the transmission learned my driving habits, they smoothed out for the most part.
    Updates:
    The price on these is 'aspirational' to put it kindly. There are tons of rebates and deals if you time your purchase right. Sticker on my '19 TH was $33,700. Paid $22,700 for it as it was priced on the dealer lot, no haggling needed. (Massive incentives & rebates, coupled with dealer markdowns had it priced at $22,700). At that price (or less) they make more sense. The $1500 destination charge is b/c they're built in Italy and shipped via cargo ship over...

      Crosstrek has oil clutch in center which only activates on slip, Renegade has extra built in auto locker which keeps center locked even when it's not moving, little extra thing which splits the 50/50 without hesitation...I really wish Subaru would ditch the CVT and add center and rear locker

    Thanks for this. I started my jeep journey with a renegade, finally after never thinking it would ever be financially possible for me I upgraded to my beloved 2 door JL wrangler. I have a kid on the way so a 2 door may be a no go for baby seat. Im considering getting rid of the wrangler for a renegade for that reason (also the cheaper monthly payments certainly help). Finding out the hard way that paternal sacrifices come well before the little one is even here.

    I just don’t see the value with Jeep’s pricing strategy.
    As someone who bought a well optioned unlimited for 26k in 2010, that same car would cost me ~42k today. That’s still 12k over the adjusted for inflation number. I just don’t see the 12k in content between the JK and JL generations to justify the upgrade.
    On the bright side. The 2010 is idiot proof - ten years of headache free driving.

    We own TWO of these (long story, don't ask) .... a 2015 & 2017. (BTW, if another reviewer mentions "Easter Eggs" again, I WILL scream!) Neither are mine, but I drive them both. The engine & transmission mapping is completely different between the two models, with the 2015's engine twice as peppy, and it's brakes three times more sensitive. Fuel economy (on paper) on the 2015 is every bit of 30MPG, and the 2017 @ 28+MPG. Both are smooth and you can drive any length trip with ease. I am a fairly sporty driver, and the engine is plenty for this car, in town and on the hwy. You can tell it's a small engine, but it makes you appreciate technology, and the erratic shifting should be an embarrassment for the designers, so much so that they should do an update for every one of these at no cost to the owner. These Renegades are not perfect, and I won't give a full review, but rolling down the highway you will find yourself thinking, "I like this car." Ours are both 2WD, so off-roading is not a consideration. And, buy at the end of the season or even a year or two back, new off the lot, and save thousands of bucks.

Oh and regarding the five inches thing; they tell me it's how you use it but then again I also have heard bigger is better. Not sure what is what here but I doubt this effects me at all sadly. Thank you for the continued awesomeness...

    "Middle position for maximum safety!" Thanks Micah, I've been preaching that to friends for awhile now--especially those who have just one child.
    Also, how cool would it be to live next to the Muzios? You'd never make another bad car purchase again!

    And if you're thinking about drivetrain durability, the naturally aspirated 2.4L will very likely be less trouble than the 1.3L turbo in the long term.

    For reasons I cannot fathom prices on Jeeps are downright exorbitant here in Mexico compared to their rivals.

      Just because it says the MSRP is $36g doesn't necessarily mean you have to pay that unless you live in a country that has fixed pricing. We picked up a 18 Latitude 4x4 model with a MSRP of $27g for just $18g plus taxes brand new. The 19 model year was just hitting the lots and the deals on the 18 models were too good to pass up.

      Yeah I don’t think the Renegade is selling very well in the USA. Maybe that’s a reason why there are so many good deals to be had!

    $36k for a Renegade is way too expensive but Jesus Chrysler new 2020 Renegades are as cheap as $12k online. I think the power train and reliability are bad but for prices that low I’d start considering a new Renegade over a used car.

    Fun review, Micha! Good looking family, too. This is my first car review video that I’ve seen by you. I usually just watch your helicopter episodes. I do a lot of research on vehicles, an odd hobby of mine, and know that the Renegade is basically a re-badged Fiat 500X. All the underpinnings, the engine and the rest of the drivetrain is the Fiat 500X. I used to work for 2 different auto research and development companies and so I like digging this stuff up. But, I don’t think its a secret. I’m very familiar with Fiat’s reliability history so I’m stay clear of them. Not that Chrysler’s reliability record is anything to brag about. I do love the Wranglers, though, and would buy one. I’ve owned several Jeep Wranglers and I love them and they’ve been very reliable for me. I was multitasking while watching this video, so if you flashed that Fiat 500x rebadging across the screen, please forgive my bring it up. I’m very busy and sometimes can’t devote 100% eyes glued to the screen. I do watch your helicopter episodes without distractions, though! I grew up in the LA area and love to see all the changes and old landmarks. I moved out of Southern California decades ago. I miss the state, but can’t afford to live there unless willing to give up a lot of luxuries, like eating. All the best to you and your family, Sir!

    Oh boy did we learn that price was a LIE. we wanted a fully loaded one just like this with every option, car needed yo being thousands more, which equaled hundreds more in the monthly payment. My mom ended up walking away with a freaking Jeep Compass limited (standard equipment that the limited comes with) no safety tech sunroof, nav or sensors. I was pissed at the dealer!
