Good evening! And welcome to this walk around the heart of Wakefield, the historic administrative centre of the West Riding of Yorkshire, and today the home of a magnificent collection of Victorian buildings and captivating stories!
On our walk around Wakefield, we mentioned that the city has origins going all the way back to the Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Viking eras. And it was in the Anglo-Saxon period that Wakefield's name is thought to have been created, deriving from 'waca-feld', which literally means a field where wakes or festivals were once held!

Excellent tour and voice-over. Can’t help laugh at the symbolism of the spaced-out gentleman staggering around in the opening shots.

Thanks for these videos! One note, Carnegie was Scottish in origin, immigrating to the US at 12 :) He built libraries all over the place, quite amazing. I believe there is one in Harrogate as well.

Historic Old City! ... Shame about the 'empty heads' who insist on spraying paint over any unguarded surface!

Wakefield City Centre has a major problem with Drug Dealers and Beggars, a Bus service that is not fit for purpose, a Bus Station
that regularly floods when there is rain, much higher rents in the private sector when compared to nearby Barnsley.

What a smart, well-kept city centre. I hadn't realised Wakefield was such an attractive place. I've never really been there. I did change trains at Kirkgate once, many years ago, and I remember a shabby, run-down station, which must have helped to form my opinion of the city. Sorry about that Wakefield.😁

@@shiver_me_timbers It is not manned by anyone, there are offices there and a cafe, tickets are bought from a machine when it works. A shelter was built with toilets, it is never opened. There are no staff and it is as dangerous a place as it ever was.

@@kirkhunter146 It has been a few years since I have been there so what you are saying could be true and sad if it is! As usual they spend the money, make it look good and staff a place then slowly over time withdraw services.
