How To Invest in Collectible Firearms

- The stock market's in free-fall. The banks are shaky. The housing market is tanking. Is there any investment that's a "safe bet" nowadays? How about firearms? Steve and Caleb are joined by our friend Bobby Tyler to tell us about investing in guns. But are guns good investments? The guys agree they've never lost money on a good-quality gun. As proprietor of Tyler Gun Works in Friona, Texas, Bobby buys and sells a LOT of collectible guns, so he's got valuable insight into this market.
What should you invest in? A good rule of thumb is to invest in guns from highly respected, "A" List makers: Colt, Mauser, Smith & Wesson, Winchester, Holland & Holland, John Rigby & Co., and the like.
Buy the cleanest example of the best-quality gun you can AFFORD in the platform you're shopping for. Condition is critical because mint-condition examples of even common guns can be rare and thus have a higher value. Originality is vital, too. Refinished guns don't have nearly the value of original guns in excellent condition. Even if it's heavily worn, a gun with its original finish will usually be worth far more than an extensively refurbished one.
What about "Commemorative Edition" guns? They look pretty, but they don't appreciate in value. In fact, you can often buy a commemorative gun for LESS than its original price. That's great if you want something that looks nice on your wall, but it's not an appreciating investment.
How important is rarity? "People want what they can't have," says Bobby, and that drives prices up. Some guns aren't popular when they're in production, so relatively few are made. Later on, they become hot collector's items. For example, the Smith & Wesson Model 16-4 Masterpiece in .32 H&R Magnum was not a big seller in its day, but it now commands dizzying prices on the collector market. Serious Colt collectors now snap up the very unsuccessful, clunky Colt 2000 pistol of the early 1990s just to complete their collections.
Should you get a collectible gun refinished? Bobby tells us why he REFUSED to engrave and refinish an 85% condition, factory-lettered Colt Single Action Army from 1935. Make sure any work you have done increases the gun's value! Now, if that 1935 SAA had been refinished years ago by an ordinary gun shop, Bobby would've been happy to go to town customizing it. And its value would have increased greatly.
Investing in guns can be a lot of fun, but it's easy for the uniformed to get scammed. Make sure you get guidance from a seasoned collector or do a LOT of homework yourself.
What are some recent firearm investments y'all have made?
BRN-10A😉
A brace of sweet slightly older 1911's. The blue 70 Series is a 70's gun, unfired in the wood grain box. And a super high-polish stainless Gold Cup National Match. Man! It IS shiny. This gun can't possibly have had a full box of shells run through it--just zero wear marks inside. It's an 80 series gun but someone has done some most EXCELLENT trigger work on it. I only have a couple of guns that have a trigger that feel like that proverbial tiny glass rod breaking and this SHINING example is one of them. I'm still 10 yrs old on some level, cuz I LIKE shiny! Both of these Colts have found a home. Thanks, guys for another great one.
M1 Garand
A 1903 Springfield made in 1918.
Your audio sucks
The guns become collector's items usually after the company has experienced enough regime changes to run the company into the ground...Colt and Winchester are prime examples..
You gotta love gunsmiths that will turn down business out of principle
Having the marlin front and center was a good choice. I love my 50's 39a. Absolute masterpiece
Can you do a video on re-blued reconditioned guns? How can you tell the difference? When do you re-blue and when to leave alone? More regarding keeping firearm in good condition.
I have a S&W model 19 6 inch barrel from late 60's (.357 tack driver) that has almost tripled in value since I purchased it. Beautiful pistol!
1965 2.5" Colt Python (95%) with ivory grips. (Real ivory, you can see the growth rinf on the inside)
Recently purchased a near mint Springfield 1911 Garrison for $500. Had a light scuff on the trigger guard that the previous owner just couldn't live with buffed right out.
And like antiques, buy what you like.
That way even if the value drops, you have something you will enjoy and/or use, and if you are lucky the market will swing in your favour in the future.
Why is the microphone so echoey
I think this was one of the best segments ever. Bobby Tyler is one of the best or not the best with his products.
The one gun i bought as an investment was a Winchester Model 70 safari grade in 458 Winchester. Ok I will never hunt Africa but it is the most beautiful stocked rifle i have in my collection. I watched it at a local gun store for over 1500. Went in and it was marked down to 599. Could not get the wallet out fast enough! I have shot it, has the safari sights, dut installed the 1-4 Leupold. and i reload for it. Probably 50 rounds ran downrange, But as the episode was about, investing when the price is right. Got lucky on that one! Also got the big bore 94 in 375 in the box with papers never fired. Those days seem to be over now finding gems at a reasonable price but it was fun while it lasted. Keep up the great stories.
Thanks for the video! On the advice of a friend I actually bought a 29-3 off TGW. It’s all original and love it. I like keeping all my revolvers original and enjoy them the way they came from the factory. My most recent purchase was a Model 19-3 with target hammer and trigger. Only thing missing was the target stocks. No wear on bluing and very slight cylinder ring. The local gun store knocked off 100 beans, then gave me another hundo in store credit. I got it for 475! Was very happy with that.
The rifle sitting on the .30-.30 ammo boxes had a tubular magazine that looked like it would load .22LR not .30-.30 :) Pretty though :)
Lately... I've been building AR's. My collectables, if I have any, will be guns I bought new in the late 70's and 80's or the guns I inherited from my dad, the oldest has a 1901 date on it.
Awww, to hell with guns as an investment. Would you have an investment set of screwdrivers, or an investment claw hammer that you can't hit a nail with? I understand though, I've got a couple of pieces that I've retired out of sentimental reasons. But I wouldn't sell them for the world , so they're priceless to me.
I have convinced my wife that some guns are investments
Hey Caleb and Steve, love your Quick Tips. Off your current subject, Caleb I noticed on " your new hotness " that you have a PDQ lever. I would love for you to do a video on exactly how to install that bad boy, and get it to work smoothly. I recently installed one on my latest build and it jams in the slot and won't always function properly. Any suggestions?
Colt SAA 45,first & second generation, you can't go wrong
I REALLY Appreciate your "Values".. It's all soo BAD my Father never had the chance to meet you! .. He had his own "Click" in VT though... I helped reloading A TON...
S&W’s 1959 Model 48.
What a pretty piece.
I buy guns that I want and make me happy. If they go up in value, I don't care.
I love Toyotas but I hate that other guys do. If you can find a S&W -1 or a performance center/custom shop. Ive always wanted a Wilson made by Bill but we can all dream.😊
The video so good we posted it twice
A recent investment of mine was a S&W model 19-2 pinned & recessed with a 4 inch barrel in nickel finish that is 95% or better. I picked it up $725 & the way the early Smiths have been appreciating I figured that was a good buy & a good investment.
I have family and 4 small kids, so I don't have money to invest in fancy collectable things, that is why I only buy what I really need , what I always use
I just acquired a Marlin Model 1936 in good to very good condition with no modifications. The Colour case hardening has faded but has not been re blued.
What’s your thoughts on a Winchester mod 1910 .401 sl and or a Winchester mod 71 .348 w.c.f.
The Texas Ranger 94 Winchester Commemorative is one of the rifles that was only sold in Texas. They are in the one thousand range. Only five thousand were made.
The time of getting a collectable at a decent price is gone. Always checked consignment guns for the price to drop and scoop them up. Those days have passed.
Great video guys! But you should check your audio mix or microphone. Something is definitely off from the other videos recently.
How about Ruger? I picked up a rare Ruger Super Redhawk 454 Cassul in tactical gray.. I do I have a Colt King Cobra as well.
Know the market and have a keen eye. Know when to walk away.
Good video,
I've got a Marlin 39A like that.
Since you uploaded this twice for some reason I'm playing both at once and oh no this was a mistake aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
It's a literal echo chamber not a twitter ideological one but actual echoes.
You simply can't go wrong with a Remington R51, any of the Lorcin pistols or any of the collector grade Mitchell's Mausers offerings. And for something more 'important', a 24k gold plated Micro Draco will become both a cherished family heirloom as well as an amazing financial watershed for your posterity.
Would you consider a Beretta 84 or 85 (F or FS) Nickel Plated a good collectible?
Colt AR-15 SP1 Ser. SP48873 in mint condition. Thats the latest.
Awesome!
Last old gun i bought was a 93' colt combat commander elite. I know its not the best score but it's pretty lol. SS frame 45acp got it for 5oo
Is the Henry Big Boy 357 revolver considered a collectible?
I have an 11-87 sp Remington 12 ga it had a waterfowl hydro dip on it … but the camo was discontinued… so I put real tree edge on the gun will that ruin the value of it ?
I never buy a so called commemorative rifle that I don't shoot,a gun that isn't shot is just a paperweight.
Snagged a 4" S&W CS-1 2M stamp 686 a while ago.
1). Have money to invest.
Had a Spas 12 that I paid $800 for and mentioned it after comparing collections with some other instructors at a certification class. One of them offered me $1200 for it out of the blue. Sold!! 😂
What pistol was that. S&w 19 or 27?
I have a great gun for ya’ll to review, the Winchester 1911SL. Look forward tour comments.
Steve left Browning and Marlin (pre-Remington or current) off his list.
I have a RPK AK
Yogo parts kit built by meridian defense.
Is gunbroker still a great place to sell????
Thanks.
Buy them. End of video. What do I win?
What model is S&W pistol on bench in video?
As far as I’m concerned the only bad gun investment is a high point 🤣

Maybe you guys should invest in better audio equipment instead of guns. It sounds like your in a tunnel. Dont shoot me for this comment 😊
I want a $15,000 portfolio of just shotguns. What do I need/want?!
Hi all the way from South Africa.
I am also collecting a few guns for an investment, I have a few that I am keeping tucked away.

Original Russian Kalashnikov AK47 built in 1968 BRAND NEW!!...The container it was shipped in was seized by the Italian goverment somewhere in the 70's off the coast of Libya on route to Gaddafi. I got one recently and is in storage awaiting licenses (takes about 4 months in South Africa)
