More rock musicians can't read musical notation than can read it. Rock is essentially an oral tradition where parts are learned by ear and memorized. At least in that aspect, it qualifies as folk music.

Neil Peart was Julliard trained and Carl Palmer did time in an orchestra, so it does happen. Just not as often as the other way around. Given that Bill Ward was hugely into swing jazz before playing rock, and was a big fan of Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa I could believe he could read a drum chart, or that he learned by ear. Either way he's awesome.

It's got something to do with when people sing they tend to make bigger sound that releases more air that in turn makes people stress syllables a lot more and a lot more clearly then their normal speech. This is also the reason some non American singers might sound American when they sing. It's always blown my mind with Ozzy to.

BS's run of albums from self titled debut Black Sabbath to Sabotage are amazing. There's a few only "ok" songs in there but, mostly magic. Sabbath songs can change on a whim. "Symptoms of the universe" breaking into lovely soliloquy with Ozzy singing his heart out at 4:12 after listening to what was the first example of "death metal" I can think of. "The Writ" setting the ominous mood and erupting into anthem. "Jack the Stripper" after a minute intro gets to rocking. "Planet Caravan" is soft and slow creating images of traveling the darkness of space and was covered beautifully by Pantera with a cool video which I saw for the first time at 2am in my room in the 90s as a teenager possibly altered a tiny bit when MTV still played music videos. "The Wizard" is an amazing song which is covered recently excellently by Brown Sabbath a Mexican Black Sabbath tribute band. It's great. Shoot,I could go on and on as I'm sure most of the commenters can. "Changes" is another great Sabbath song. Charles Bradley covers that beautifully. Just push play on any of those albums and let it play whether it grabs you right away or not. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. It's great workout music too.

He was so impressed (at age 14) that he went out the next day and bought the whole Black Sabbath catalogue...WITH MY MONEY! I was glad to do it, glad that I had something I could pass on to him. Black Sabbath=timeless. Nothing will ever surpass the jaw dropping shock when I heard Sabbath for the first time in 1970 on a hill in a friends car with a then rare FM radio. KSAN San Francisco. Those who came latter cannot imagine what it was like...there was never music like this before, it was completely different from anything before it. I became a fan IMMEDIATELY. The metal style is still going strong here in the future...in some ways better than ever, but there is still something about those pre-72 Marshals on 11 that can not be duplicated. I love to see the young generation discover these classics. I hope it opens the doors to a rock and roll vault full of awesome music for all of you. Just goes to show that good music transcends all age and race boundaries. Something we can all come together around.
By the way, Bill Ward is the drummers name and he's one of the all time greats.

@Jesus is Dog : Don't be hating so much. I'm a Black Sabbath fan and have enjoyed the metal genre since the 80's. I just also happen to not be narrow minded.
