Anthrax were forerunners in the "New York Hardcore" which was really a punk/thrash fusion - they deserve to be 1 of the big 4! The sound branched off into other genres and encompass a TON of music in the 80's, but the Anthrax thrash with the punk attitude really was some of the best music of the day and it has stood the test of time. Their latest album has some bangers on it. I heard my first Anthrax song in summer 84 - metal thrashing mad - will never forget it.

Their Sabbath Bloody Sabbath cover I absolutely love it and I wish they would have kept going at the end and covered Sweet Leaf. "Medusa", "Gung Ho", or "Indians".... my three fave Anthrax tracks in no particular order
EDIT: Also, yes, Anthrax in general is much closer to the punk influences on thrash, while Metallica and Megadeth filtered that punk energy through Motorhead which straddled that line between more traditional metal and punk. If you wanna check out more punk check out "Holiday in Cambodia," ""Kill the Poor," or "Let's Lynch the Landlord" by the Dead Kennedys, or "Blitzkrieg Bop," "I Wanna Be Sedated," or "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" by the Ramones, or, finally, "White Trash (2nd Generation)," "You," or "21st Century (Digital Boy)" by Bad Religion. There are so many more great punk bands, like the Misfits and Black Flag that also left their marks on the early thrash founders, but these are some of my faves, and cover both the political, personal, and philosophical concepts that form the "standard" (lol) punk ideology.

Any serious 'Thrax fan will have seen the many recent short RUclips videos they uploaded celebrating 40 yrs. They speak about all albums in order, how they came to be etc with loads of input from other famous rockers. A must watch for any fan. It makes you understand their 40 yr journey.
As for songs: Madhouse, Caught In a Mosh, Indians, NFL, Got The Time, Metal Thrashing Mad (the song that invented the term "thrash" (The song was reviewed in Kerrang magazine and the first time thrash was used to describe this type of music)). Up to that point bands like Metallica were calling themselves 'power metal'. So we got 'Thrax to thank for the term thrash (not who started making thrash first, that's different). Also, for purest of thrash, drummer Charlie Benante and Guitarist Scott Ian formed a crossover band called Stormtroopers of Death (S.O.D). The album 'Speak English or Die' is a crossover tongue-in_cheek parody type band but theres some amazing hardcore punk/thrash songs on it. Should check out 2 songs (which are played together) March of The SOD & Sgt D and The SOD. First 2 tracks on the album. Anyway, cheers, Keep rockin' 🤘🏻

Anthrax does seem to throw in more major voicings and resolutions than most metal. #Funner lol
Got The Time was my introduction to them and it's still my favorite. When that comes on while I'm driving I have to be very careful.
Apparently they used to record (or practice?) near me in upstate NY.
It may have been Anthrax which inoculated me against Abercrombie... The two singers have such different sounds. This is Joey Beladonna and the next is John Bush from Armored Saint (Think starting in 92?) on the Sound of White Noise album, which has a very definitive 1990's thing going on without them trying to go into grunge on that popularity wave. First release off that was "Only," and it's crazy melodic for how heavy it is

You should try the original french version by the band trust. The song is very similar but with significant differences. They were one of the first french metal bands and indeed they took a lot of influence from British punk music. And they were indeed very political, a staple of union strikes and demonstrations in the 80's.

Thank you for getting to Anthrax! While this is a great song, since it’s a cover, it’s not really the best on that album, and not an Anthrax song. FYI Anthrax, Metallica, Megadeth… are all Thrash. The Thrash genre is like a mix of punk and metal. You will hear punk influence in those bands original songs if you listen for it. Also, Anthrax is one of those bands you can’t pin down sometimes. They have experimented incorporating different genres into Thrash, so a deep dive is necessary to understand them and their sound. Pretty important band. Thanks again

@@jima6545 the 80s was my era too 😆, and the bands mentioned were the pioneers of Thrash Metal and were referred to as such. ☺️ I feel like we probably agree on more than we sound like here. The problem is too many genres! Thrash metal, speed metal, death metal, are all metal sub-genres that overflow into each other. Heavy metal, is the main genre that came from rock and blues. The New Wave of British Metal did away with the blues aspect. Metallica was heavily influenced by those bands. Thrash has a pretty distinctive sound, but it wasn’t Metallica’s only contribution. The other bands mentioned also pioneered other sub-genres. Like you pointed out, Slayer was thrash but also considered the starting point of Death metal. None of the genres could be considered generic terms tho… because someone doesn’t understand the terms or uses them wrong doesn’t mean they’re no longer valid. Peace ✌️

As far as I can remember Anthrax - I'm The Man was the first attempt at rap/rock ..other then the Aerosmith/Run DMC - Walk this way mash-up and the fact that the Beastie Boys were Punk before transitioning to rap...Anthrax seemed to be the first to put both styles in one song that was written by them and it was terribly awesome!!! I would still vote for Testament as #4 in the Big 4 but they have some good stuff. BTW Loved your live video yesterday.
