First time I have seen someone elses settings for video. Very useful. I never discuss it on YT, because I do not understand video settings so well. I manually focus in video with red peaking more often than AF, but that can cause vibration as I touch the lens. I still have a Lumix Gh6 and keep changing my mind as to which has the better AF in video mode.

    • @DennisJacobsenWildlife

I too use manual focus with peaking often :) one thing i would like to see is an option to let the peaking stay active all the time and not just when you use the focus ring! i looked for an option like this but cant see one?

    • @MikeLaneFRPS
      @MikeLaneFRPS Год назад +2

Yes I agree. When a duck is floating on water you can't tell if it has drifted out of focus unless you turn the focus.
I use the FN lever to change to manual focus and press the AEL button at the same time. I have this button setup to activate peaking and this way peaking stays active until the camera goes into sleep mode without touching the focus ring. @@DennisJacobsenWildlife

@@MikeLaneFRPShi Mike big fan. By coincidence I solved that issue with a detailed response on this thread about simply assigning a button for focus peaking in the button function settings but for video mode. That will simplify your issue about having full control of focus peaking toggling on and off with a button and not having to turn the focus ring. Shoot in manual video mode press the function button you set up and when you see your histogram disappear from your evf you’re on constant peak mode. Press again and peaking is off and your histogram appears on screen again.

Thanks for taking the time to make this video and show us your settings. I will try them out! Also just found this out. If you want to record video in manual mode using focus peaking and set to constant on and not having it time out, so you have to reactivate peaking again by touching the focus ring. Assign an off or other function button that you don’t use and set to peak. So go to cog wheel, page 1, button settings ok, movie icon function ok and assign whatever button to peaking.
So shooting in manual in movie mode press function button assigned to peaking and it will stay on until out of focus is reached by subject movement or whatever.
Keep in mind there are button settings in picture and movie mode separately. Which was my mistake when only assigned focus peaking in picture mode only and when shooting in manual movie mode focus peaking would time out unless I turn the focus ring on the lens. Anyway hope this helps someone out if they continue to have issues with the c-af-+tracking using the om1 with the 150-400 that has a very short depth of field especially using the longer focal lengths. Maybe this camera with it’s small sensor will never focus through out the whole sequence. I have asked a couple of Om ambassadors how they shot video and they all said they shoot in manual mode. So maybe no software will get it 100%.

    Interesting video, Dennis.
When OM-1 was released, reviewers said "bird detection" does not work in video. Maybe they did not knew the trick about activate the tracking ON.
I did not tried it myself, but looking at your video I have the feeling "bird detection" works until you press RECORD button. From that moment, the tracking replaces the "bird detection". Tracking works different than "bird detection". But it should be good enough. I guess the same would be in photo mode if you use C-AF + TR. I did not tried it, I always use just C-AF + "bird detection" in photo mode.

Thanks ... i almost put in a section comparing what you say here because i also feel the bird AF are WAY better before pressing the record button. I will test this some more because i can record the footage on the Ninja V directly so all the camera stays with "the white boxes" :)

Great video Dennis! I have also tried the CAF+tracking bird detect in video and struggled with focus drift, especially when the subject is a little further away or the subject is in a scene with low contrast. In these situation I have had better luck turning off CAF+tracking with bird AI and just shoot CAF with the OM1's "large" focus area. I find using this method I have more "cinematic" looking footage when the CAF speed is set to -1 and the CAF sensitivity is left at 0. The reason I choose the aforementioned CAF speed and sensitivity settings, is that if/when the focus begins to drift, it will drift less, and correct the focus sooner. Also, in my opinion the footage appears to follow focus the subject similar to what cinematographers would do when focusing manually. The downside to this method is that you must keep your subject located in the bottom portion of the large focus area, so the camera doesn't focus on the foreground, and you will have to use the joystick to move the focus area.
Obviously, these settings aren't ideal for every situation but I have had surprisingly good results taking footage of shorebirds with them.
Please let me know if you have tried something similar to what I suggested, and if so, how it compares to CAF+tracking with bird AI focus.
    Thanks again!

Thanks Jay for your input! actually when i had the Sony A1 i did it exactly like you described here but on the OM-1 i use both bird tracking, C-AF like you and manual focus with focus peaking. I mostly shoot short bird sequences so i just need the birds to be in focus but i would do the same as you if i needed focus shifts and so one. But right now i just want the focus to reach its target as fast as possible :) :)

Nice video Dennis. I don't do lots of video for wildlife. But I use it often for family. I will give it a go using CAF+TR and face detect on or Bird detect for humans or birds, receptively. I have my sensitivity at +1 ad I think -1 makes more sense to avoid AF jumps quickly to nearby subject or when someone, etc comes unexpectedly into the scene. Cheers...

      I found this answer online:
Focus locks for high speed video when you start recording, so C-AF will not work. This behaviour is implied by the phrase in the OM-D manuals about Filming High Speed Movies: "Focus, exposure, and white balance lock while recording."

I think the af for birds tracking is right there with the best out there but the video still needs improvement.
