Just watched this again, especially since I've now got a OM1 myself. I'd say the auto focus lock on rate is very good compared to trying it on my old omd1 mk2. Going to try this bird detection on insects myself .

Its great isnst it, been using it this year with some good results! Hope you've had some good shots with it too :)

Very impressive! This year has been a bag of nails for dragonflies/damselflies in flight for me. I've only managed a few of each at rest. Last year was so much better: I was so close I was using my 60mm f2.8. This year I was looking forward to using my 90mm f3.5 for in flight shots, but I've hardly seen any.

that sucks, I've had bad years in the past with very few opportunities - that sort of thing always seems to happen when you have a new lens to try out! But there's still a few weeks of dragonfly activity left, at least here in the UK

Very interesting tests, hopefully they manage to improve this going forward with an insect AI option.
Wonder if use of the focus limiter would help.
Not sure if I missed it but what lens were you using for manual focus?

      Thank you
Yes finger cross they do an Insect AI. The 300mm shots (manual and Af) are all with the Olympus 300mm F4 prime lens. The macros all with the Om 90mm Macro

This is fascinating I've been trying to capture Blue Eyed Darners in my garden in San Francisco, can you tell me how far away the Dragon Flies are and if you are using Shutter priority, or full Manual?

      Thanks
The medium distance shots are probably about 3 to 4m away, the "close up" shots are around 1m and the macro shots even close than that

Great video with impressive results on the dragonflies. I'm pretty sure insect detect autofocus could be added with a simple firmware update. Sony and Fuji have it so it's not out of the realm of possibility.

Yes would be great to have insect subject detect...or dare i hope for specific butterfly and dragonfly subject detection.. :)
