It’s important to remember review scores are not worth the same across different sites. An 8 from EZA means the game is incredible, and taking into account how critical Huber likes to be this just means it’s definitely earned the 8/10.
This is a game I've been dying to pick up as soon as I get some spare cash. It's got a slick artstyle, the combat looks meaty and it had me hooked by the mere concept of the protagonist being a corpse reanimated by a bunch of green goop.
Coming from a lifetime of reading and watching reviews, I thought the discussion was leading to a 9-9.5 score. The 8 surprised me. Not knocking it by any means but maybe emphasize some of the things you didn’t like or enjoy??
I love 2D games but Rogue like is not my thing, i prefer traditional linear crafted level design with a little more emphasis on story. But you guys still make some of the best reviews, however this one did sound like an 8.5 or a 9. respect nonetheless 👏🏻
It's a 5 from me. Random levels and no sense of challenge from lesser enemies. Just kinda going through the motions slowly getting better for what might come. Yuck
Excellent review. This game just *looks* so fluid and fun to play and combat looks really satisfying. I'm definitely going to get this one. Not sure if on Switch or PC though, that's the question now...
I really appreciate this review. Was always curious about this and Chasm's unique take on metroivania with procedural elements. Just finished Hollow Knight and given these games lack of story, i'll stick to more normal entries in the genre like Guacamelee and Cave Story.
One correction to this review, you only get a "random set of weapons" once you have the upgrade via cell upgrades, initially, you only have a basic bow or basic shield and they're not randomized and always the same.
Another amazing review has graced my presence 🙌 I remember hearing of this a while ago happy to hear it’s good. Might have to give this a go. Love and Respect!
How do you get the ps4 input in the game when you are playing on a pc? Right know i only have the xbox input, but i am using a ps4 controller, really frustrating. Can somebody help? ^^
Like most of the allies before me, I didnt catch why its 8.0 rather than 9.0+. The review really did sound a 9.0+ to me. Its sort of "uncoordinated" for lack of a better term. Love and respect from South East Asia
I know it's silly since we're already talking about the PS5 and Xbox Two but I do wish that small scale pixel art games like this would come out across the full range of platforms. I mean, the PS3 and Xbox 360 could very easily run this game and there's literally tens of millions of those consoles still sitting in homes.
Had it on GoG for a while now, played a bit, loved it and decided to wait for release. Now i want a switch physical copy lol, probably getting it soon.
On paper I love the idea of this game. The music, sound effects, visual style, and animation all totally turn me off, though. The animation looks like Scribblenauts to me: just no punch at all. It feels weird to pass on something based on asthetics alone, but I think I have to.
No one is mentioning that this game costs anywhere between 20-30 bucks and is available on all 3 current gen consoles and steam. I know IGN is re-reviewing this game and as much as I love this game a 9.7 is a little high in my honest opinion. I think anywhere between 8-9 seems more appropriate.
I`m really liking the game, but so far a 9.7 from IGN seems high. Way too early for me to score it, but it seems a bit in line with what Huber thinks. I think Enter the Gungeon is better and it did not get the praise this game is getting.
Are they getting thougher/harsher on their scoring ? I also expected a higher grade based on what was said. Not complaining, just curious. And being thougher does mean the grade means more, so im pretty ok with it
Ii played this game non stop for a few months earlier this year.. sad they didn't show whats new in the review. as someone who played the early access religiously, the only new thing in this review are the story stuff
It's weird to me how people get so caught up on scores, rather than what the reviewer said throughout the video. "You seemed to think this game was great, but you only gave it an 8!!!!", as if an 8 is a sign of a game not being worth your time.
score inflation happened. since review sites throw around with 9s and 10s like it's nothing we're at a point where 8s kinda feel like "slightly above average". I mean, people complain about a game "only" getting a 9 instead of a 9.5 or 10
I love you EZA, but can you focus on talking about what specifically you like and dislike about the game during the review, instead of just rambling about all of the gameplay mechanics? Edit: that seems ruder than I meant it, but I would just rather hear about what your opinion is on it than what the game features.
Agreed 100%. Been on the fence for this game for a while and this review did nothing to persuade me one way or the other. Especially for a game like this, where much of the praise elsewhere has been directed towards its gameplay and combat, it seems strange to hone in on mechanics.
Good review. However, I'm going to pass, as I hate games that make you lose everything at death like Enter the Gungeon. I've had my fill of that time wasting mechanic with most NES games.
Imagine if you get to keep your stuff and visit previous areas and bosses, it’ll be just plain boring since it gives no challenge and makes a tedious job of scalling back where you left off. This is also the reason why every run is very different from the other, which makes the game more challenging and fun.
Guy/Gals there's no reason to explain to me why you like them. If you like it, great. I'd probably enjoy these types of games when I was younger. I just don't have the time to spend on games like that this anymore.
Put like 7 hours into it over the summer sale and didn't feel it was that amazing. Seeing all the other scores made me feel like I'm not seeing something in it. This review and score put that worry to ease. Still pretty good. Not a 9, though.
Also, if everybody thinks like that, those indie studios won't be around in a few years cause nobody would have bought their games at release. Just saying.
The score feels a bit low. I presume there will be an update when they get out of early access and I assume EZA has reviewed the new build. Will there be new worlds and enemies? The review didn't show anything new.
Terrible game with too much ninja style like naruto which are lame. So many games are all about ninjas. Others are not. Booooring. Also this graphics sucks. Castlevania PS1 wins.
The review number really doesn't seem to reflect the content of the review. Just comparing it to the most recent review (Octopath also got an 8) the content was way more positive and it still got the same score.
Rogue like, metorid vanias, zelda and souls clone Indie has been doing this since their emergence They will be doing this in 2020 and beyond at this rate meh

I think the nature of the games industry is to iterate on a few gameplay ideas or genres. The ones you mentioned are good for indies because they are "easier" or more realistic to develop with a smaller team and budget. I think you're overlooking a HUUUUGE amount of games if you think that's the only kind of game coming out of the indie scene though. Personally I love zelda, metroid and dark souls, so as long as people are bringing interesting new ideas and art to the table within those genre conventions I'm happy to at least give them a try.
Once an item's blueprint is acquired and successfully delivered to The Collector (the shopkeeper at the end of every stage), the item is yours forever. The hanging glass vials at the start of the game show all the items (weapons and secondary items alike) you've collected. And once you buy the "Random Start Equipment" upgrades, every one of those primary items can become your starting gear on a new run. What makes it more like a Metroid game are the permanent upgrades to your character in the form of Runes, which help increase your exploration abilities. The first one you get, for example, is a Rune that allows you to grow vines from green spores you find across the various levels. A later one grants a wall-climbing ability, which is required before you can access later levels of the game. Think of it more like Rogue Legacy than Metroid, but it definitely has that Metroid influence in the upgrade system. This is a solid game which I've clocked 100+ hours in, easily. Well worth it.
It's called a Rogue style game. The game is more rogue style than it is a metroidvania and it shows in its design. So if you don't like rogue style, hate the genre not the game.
Joey Sweener ~ Thanks for the clarification about the "perma-death" system. I wasn't sure this game was for me because of losing my equipment over and over again when I die but how you've described the mechanic here it doesn't sound so bad. It seems like, even if you die a fair bit, you'll still feel progression because at least certain things are permanent/can be made permanent - that's what's I like to hear. I'll try this game out later this week.
Heaps of praise followed by a slightly above average score. I don't get this. If the game is flawed enough to warrant two whole points taken off of it, I certainly didn't hear about them in the review.
That explanation doesn't really say anything different from what OP said....Not having something "outstanding" in the game to warrant a higher score is a flaw. So what was that missing "outstanding" thing? AKA, what were the game's flaws?
Quality review guys. Keep it up!
Yup, at least there is no plagiarism here.
Dead Cells was the first rogue-like game I ever played, and since then I've been actively hunting more games like it.
Thanks for taking your time to make this review, easily the most priceless reviews on RUclips ❤️
It’s important to remember review scores are not worth the same across different sites. An 8 from EZA means the game is incredible, and taking into account how critical Huber likes to be this just means it’s definitely earned the 8/10.
Fun fact: this review wasn’t stolen.
breadordecide came here looking for a comment like this 😂
Can you give me some context?
@@pekka405 IGN plagiarized someone else's review for this game. There was a really big controversy around it.
@@potato9901 I'll thank you seven months later
Great review! I heard Rogue-lite and randomized dungeons and was hard out, then watched the rest of the review and was hard in.
I love hearing Jones read Huber's sentences, because I can always tell exactly how Huber would say it.
This is a game I've been dying to pick up as soon as I get some spare cash. It's got a slick artstyle, the combat looks meaty and it had me hooked by the mere concept of the protagonist being a corpse reanimated by a bunch of green goop.

its a 10 from me! so addicting..

You should try it. It has no story, that is true, but that game is addictive. I have 150+ hours on it.
Super excited to try this on my switch. Made it an even easier buy since it’s 20% off as a preorder.
One correction to this review, you only get a "random set of weapons" once you have the upgrade via cell upgrades, initially, you only have a basic bow or basic shield and they're not randomized and always the same.
the dark souls of finding the toilet and taking a poop at 3 AM with no power and no flashlight

Holy shit, it's the GT guy! Man I missed hearing your voice in my reviews
Easy Allies Easiest subscription of my life. Sad I didnt know about this sooner. You guys were by far my favorite gaming website
Any information on the switch version bad performance and if Huber noticed any of those in terms of fps?
How do you get the ps4 input in the game when you are playing on a pc? Right know i only have the xbox input, but i am using a ps4 controller, really frustrating. Can somebody help? ^^
Coming out tmrw for PS4! Cant wait!!!
EZ doesn't steal from Boomstick Gaming. EZ is awesome.

Why go Potatoe mode when you can play it on pc??
On paper I love the idea of this game. The music, sound effects, visual style, and animation all totally turn me off, though. The animation looks like Scribblenauts to me: just no punch at all. It feels weird to pass on something based on asthetics alone, but I think I have to.
Dang the review was nothing but praise, expected a 9+.
I agree, it was a very good review except for the fact it didn't talk about shortcomings which makes that 8 a tad weird
Yeah, I was also expecting a 9 for that same reason.
Yeah, I mean the 8/10 is fine, but would have liked to see more of what didnt work in the game.
just because a game doesnt have any negatives doesnt mean its a 9 or 10. Its just another metroidvania like 100 other indies.
Another reason why scores are outdated. Content alone matters, ignore the score
Yo are you guys gonna review Death's Gambit too?
Recently this was released for Android devices . Probably the best thing to happen for mobile gaming in 2020.
Im glad others share some of my frustrations with the game, or at least Im guessing as much from the score, I just wish you explained what those were
Holy HELL! Is that Brandon Jones from GameTrailers? I loved GT and was really sad when they shut down because of monetary issues. :(
Another great review, Brandon :)
I`m really liking the game, but so far a 9.7 from IGN seems high. Way too early for me to score it, but it seems a bit in line with what Huber thinks. I think Enter the Gungeon is better and it did not get the praise this game is getting.
Looks cool. It's a shame it's a rogue like game.
Bought day one at release of Early Access, better and better with each and every update, arguably one of the best rogue-likes ever released.
Are they getting thougher/harsher on their scoring ? I also expected a higher grade based on what was said. Not complaining, just curious. And being thougher does mean the grade means more, so im pretty ok with it
I would've mentioned the lackluster randomization of the levels. They are all almost the same and never feel really different.
anyone of the Allies brave enough for La Mulana 2? btw great review
I'm not a fan of rogue likes but Dead Cells is so freakn fun and addictive I'm really enjoying it
Something like Binding of Issac and Dark Souls combined??
Sign me up!!
Lmao binding of issac. Its more soulslike with metroidvania thrown in.
I like how fast I can play. This game is like Shinobi of modern time.
Reminds me a lot of the game OUTLAND on PS3 . It's amazingly good .
Great review, but with no negatives, I'm shocked it didn't receive a 9
It's like darksouls, die and repeat. It's quite good, only thing I didn't like is some area s will give you some enemies at once.
Is this an explainer for the game or a review? Kinda confused on what this is.
Hyped for this.
Ii played this game non stop for a few months earlier this year.. sad they didn't show whats new in the review. as someone who played the early access religiously, the only new thing in this review are the story stuff
Why is no one talking about great the sensory feedback on this game is
It's weird to me how people get so caught up on scores, rather than what the reviewer said throughout the video. "You seemed to think this game was great, but you only gave it an 8!!!!", as if an 8 is a sign of a game not being worth your time.

great game..on sale right now for ps members $15 or so
Do they keep you in a cell? Cells.
Really can’t express how good this game is.
Is this the guy from GameTrailers???
Great job Huber!
Wait? Is this the reviewer from GameTrailers? This voice sounds familiar...
Lowest difficulty? You could change the difficulty? How
So basically 2D Dark Souls? I'd dig that.
Dark Souls is about learning your environment. Which is what I loved about it. Random levels just suck.
Yeah would have loved to hear what made it not a 9 :)
just because a game doesnt have any negatives doesnt mean its a 9 or 10. Its just another metroidvania like 100 other indies.
its not a metroidvania though?
R E its more of a roguelike than a metroidvania
Hello Bloodworth!! , good evening.
This review reminds me of ps360wii era for some reason
What didn't you like about the game to give it an 8? I was expecting a lot higher from the reviewer
Way to go on not plagiarizing
This game just makes me want Rogue Legacy to come to Switch too.
I love you EZA, but can you focus on talking about what specifically you like and dislike about the game during the review, instead of just rambling about all of the gameplay mechanics?
Edit: that seems ruder than I meant it, but I would just rather hear about what your opinion is on it than what the game features.
I know right?
It's your job as the consumer to decide whether you like something or not.
SEMS what's your point? Why else would you watch a review if not to assist in that decision making?
Agreed 100%. Been on the fence for this game for a while and this review did nothing to persuade me one way or the other. Especially for a game like this, where much of the praise elsewhere has been directed towards its gameplay and combat, it seems strange to hone in on mechanics.
David Echavez-Valdez what...does that have to do with my comment? I'm not asking for them to be harsher, but to give more opinion
Good review. However, I'm going to pass, as I hate games that make you lose everything at death like Enter the Gungeon. I've had my fill of that time wasting mechanic with most NES games.
It's more like Risk of Rain where you unlock more stuff that makes you stronger and progress further next time.
Imagine if you get to keep your stuff and visit previous areas and bosses, it’ll be just plain boring since it gives no challenge and makes a tedious job of scalling back where you left off. This is also the reason why every run is very different from the other, which makes the game more challenging and fun.
Badmunky64 so you like those easy games that hold your hand lol 😂
Guy/Gals there's no reason to explain to me why you like them. If you like it, great. I'd probably enjoy these types of games when I was younger. I just don't have the time to spend on games like that this anymore.
Rune Soldier cool beans 👍
I can try to explain why it's 8 and not 9.
While it is a brilliant game, it still appeals to fans of the genre, not the majority.
Best 2d game this gen
nah celeste is the best
I'm waiting on guacamelee 2.
well i finally bought this game, you better not dissapointme again easy allies.
Put like 7 hours into it over the summer sale and didn't feel it was that amazing. Seeing all the other scores made me feel like I'm not seeing something in it. This review and score put that worry to ease. Still pretty good. Not a 9, though.
you mean that an 8 is a disappointing game ? lol
No
Thanks to IGN an broomstick this game a big hit.
This review was confusing. The way it was described sounded like a 9 or 9.5. Why did it get an 8?
Great review ...but an 8?
Come on this game is a 9 at least. I can't put it down!
An Easy Allies Original.
Please notice us of spoilers (final boss battle)
that wasnt the final boss that was one of the beginning bosses and one of the midgame bosses
be careful IGN is stealing reviews and they need to repost theirs so be on a lookout.
I am afraid buying Indies because Sooner or later free PS plus
I miss getting indies on Plus, now I just get games that I already own
This is far better than the usual PS+ indie title. Doubtful it will come to PS+ and if it does, it'll be in a few years minimum.
I mean you guys got Salt and Sanctuary right, pretty comparable quality.
you can look it in another way: buying this game supports the dev
Also, if everybody thinks like that, those indie studios won't be around in a few years cause nobody would have bought their games at release. Just saying.
man it looks almost unrecognizable from when I last played.
8.0? I must have missed anything negative said about this game in this review.
8.0 guess being an indie games warrant you two point penalty.
The score feels a bit low. I presume there will be an update when they get out of early access and I assume EZA has reviewed the new build. Will there be new worlds and enemies? The review didn't show anything new.
Well it is an Easy Allies / Huber review and not yours and an 8 is still fantastic.
Its already out of Early Access
Terrible game with too much ninja style like naruto which are lame. So many games are all about ninjas. Others are not. Booooring. Also this graphics sucks. Castlevania PS1 wins.
i think you might need glasses
IGN did a better review this time. Oh thats right, they stole theirs.
You sound like the guy from game trailers, no offense.
Easy Allies - oh ok, hope you guys are doing well.
Sounds like a 9, Huber, but I forgive you :p
I agree with the confusion. No significant flaws are mentioned so what makes the game an 8 instead of anything above?
The review number really doesn't seem to reflect the content of the review. Just comparing it to the most recent review (Octopath also got an 8) the content was way more positive and it still got the same score.

Maker of Dark souls is onto Sekiro
He wants to try new stuff , Nuff said
Hollow knight is much better.
Not a rouge game but still.
then why compare it to dead cells?
SCIFI RICE Perfectly fine to do a comparison.
Losing items is super frustrating to me, if you’re going to make a Metroid like game, at least let me keep the items.

7/10 not enough plagerism
I have no interest in this game, but I know that I just want to see your review.
