1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle, except held items
3. No glitches, exploits, or save states
4. No movepool evasion-boosting moves before level 100*
Rule details:
-- I make no attempt to have the exact same rule details between generations.
-- I am allowed to manipulate my starter
-- I play the game at 4x game speed
-- For fair comparisons my Pokemon have perfect (or near perfect) DVs / IVs
-- I am allowed to catch HM users - I can use all field moves
-- Evasion boosting is allowed if the move is not obtained from the Pokemon’s movepool. For example, using Mimic or Mirror Move to boost evasion is allowed.
-- Surge's trash-can-puzzle is automatically solved
-- The bike is allowed in gen1 & 4, banned in gen2, and allowed only to bypass terrain in gen3
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- I can pause the game and timer to take breaks
-- Items obtained with the ability Pickup can only be used if the starter obtained them
-- The footage is sped up & slowed down to match the pace of my narration

-- All battle-mechanic glitches are allowed (glitches that occur outside of battle are banned)
-- In generation 1, I'm allowed to skip Marowak with the Poke Doll

I remember using a Golduck on a playthrough of FRLG and being SO MAD that it doesn't get Psychic. This poor guy really got the short end of the stick.

i remember psyduck being my moms favorite mon. she said "it reminds me of dad, because it only got 3 hairs on its head". the funny thing is: i talked with an online friend, and i casually mentioned "ye, psyduck was my moms favorite", and she responded - that was my moms favorite too!" kinda hilarious psyduck seems to be the "moms favorite" pokemon XD

i will NEVER underestimate a golduck. when i did a nuzlocke of platinum a few years ago, one survived as a team mainstay from a level 6 psyduck in oreburgh gate all the way up to being my last 'mon standing and soloing cynthia's garchomp and roserade. best girl fr
Y'know you're right Scott. The typing of Golduck is odd. It clearly is a psychic pokemon, and being a bird I think the only correct typing would be Psychic/Flying.

I really liked the little animations all of the gym leaders’ Pokémon had during the gym battle intros.
Golduck in Pokémon Radical Red is one of the best mons to use. Cloud nine completely blocks weather effects from working and it's access to encore is so useful. Great Pokémon

The reason the names are weird has to do with the names origin. Golduck as a name comes from Japanese, where the name is ゴルダック (gorudakku, AKA "golduck"). Gorudakku was seemingly chosen since Pokemon seems to like associating "Gold" with psychic types. For example, Sabrina's badge name in Japanese is ゴールドバッジ (goorudo bajji, AKA "gold badge" rather than the English "marsh badge"), and how in Mystery Dungeon gold gummies boost psychic types. I wonder if there is a Japanese cultural reason for it. Then the localizers had to do something with the first form, which is コダック (kodakku, literally "kid duck"), so they just went with "psyduck" as a decent name.
Goldduck is probably also a play on コールダック (kooru dakku) or "call duck" which is a kind of duck. Specially when you consider it goes form "ko" to "goru" it is more obvious they are playing around it.
Gold just has a general association with "Psychics"

I like that, even on the run were you beat the chamion A, the archanine still tried to use extreamspeed. Like it remembered how it won on the other two runs.
Golduck currently also shines as the best Team member for Any% Speedrun for Platinum, looking forward to the solo video of how it works in normal playthrough in these games too

Lots of people mistake that. Golduck is in fact a monotype! Pure psychic! So many think it's a water type just because it looks like a duck!

A really cool adjustment to the overlay for runs where you evolve could be showing the +/- figure for how much stats have changed over evolution. Can’t hold the maths in my head to see how much difference has just happened. Just a thought 🥰 love your content
Golduck has always been one of my favorites. I was so mad when the anime made us think that Misty's Psyduck had finally evolved.
Nintendo needs to create an evolution of golduck and call it bluduck and have it be gold in color. It’s the only logical evolution.

I’m currently doing a Persian/Meouth solo run, I’m right before the 8th badge and I must say once you get to the mid 20s he honestly just clears the game with no struggle anywhere. Good option so far

In the anime, Misty's Psyduck was my favorite. The poor guy was always in pain, but when it finally snapped it was both hilarious and terrifying.
Was secretly hoping to witness a snapped Psyduck during battles. Perhaps in the future, if this gets noticed.
Golduck came in clutch for me many times during various nuzlockes, and has therefore become one of my favorite mons. Hoping to see a good result here for my boy 👀
Golduck was one of my favorite pokemon as a child, because the anime made it out to be really cool (though only for like one scene in an episode that otherwise treats it as a womanizing joke). I think I just really liked the progression of derpy->cool-looking in general.
That said, actually using one (in a team) always feels like a bit of a slog. It has nothing to really make it stand out compared to other water types (except for Calm Mind) and the fact you have to lug around a Psyduck until Lv33 for that meager payoff doesn't help. There are a bunch of Gen1 lines evolving in the 28 to 33 range that just feel underpowered for how long they're stuck in their base stages and Golduck is one of them. Sidenote, I really had to pay attention to not mix up the names thanks to your joke. Well played.
Koga's battle intro animation is hilarious! And yeah, it is strange that Gold/Psy ducks' names work better reversed

I'll be honest I'm totally fine with pokemon having serious move diversity that isn't in line with their typing and wish Gamefreak did it more. I LIKE that Psyduck and Golduck are momo water types that still have some strong psychic influences without being psychic type. I don't think a pokemon should need to have a typing to have access to those moves. I think that it would be really cool if the regional birds could just stop needing to be part normal. It's okay to have pure flying types. The Golduck line is a great showing of how pokemon can be more than just their type combination and I really would love to see that taken further.

I absolutely LOVE Golduck. Probably my favorite water-type from gen 1 (I say probably, because Starmie and Kingler are also favorites).
There's always a sense of 'aw no' whenever you play a Water type without a Water STAB move early on, particularly in these early gens with early rock leaders. That sense of 'bro you should be cleaning *UP* not grinding on bugs!!'

Looking at the TMs list: "Wait... that can't be right. Why is there no psychic on there? Golduck always uses psychic moves. I should look this up."
But it's not a mistake! Apparently Golduck can't learn psychic via TM in gen 3, but it can learn this move via egg move in gens 2 and 3! That's ridiculous! They fixed this in gen 4, but wow Golduck was screwed over by the devs here!
Fun Fact: Golduck has been in every mainline pokemon game and is the favourite pokemon of one kf the head developers.
Even then it still can't get a buff. Reminds me of how bad Kirby was nerfed in Smash after Smash64. Kirby wss specifically nerfed for Melee because the lead dev didn't want to show bias to his own franchise mascot.
Golduck not getting psychic is criminal. Completely destroyed one of my runs and made me rethink things. I believe I went with Lapras instead, the low-hanging fruit. Golduck has always been one of my favorites.
Small addition to what you said about natures in competitive here, Timid and Jolly natures are also really valuable but mostly because a lot of mons can be expected to have max speed investment (even moreso in modern gens where speed creep is reaching concerning levels).
I was playing a totally authentic pokemon crystal run today and happened across a shiny venonat! Can’t wait for the ice/ground type to be the frontrunner on my team ❤

@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon yep. The Psyduck line has been catchable in the wild of every pokemon game except leaf green (version exclusive) and the game cube games. For comparison, pikachu was in both kanto remakes, but not in any of the 4 gen 5 games or catchable the GC games, so psyduck is in 3 more games than pikachu at present.

Venomoth Fact #30: The reason many people think that Psyduck and Golduck have psychic powers is because as a Psyduck, the little guy always wished they had those powers. So Venomoth would always be in the background, subtly using super moth psychic powers to let the little duck live their dream in front of the amazed masses.
I used to think psyduck gained psychic type when it evolved due to the anime. In episode 91 (I looked it up) Misty battles another water trainer who exclusively uses dual types believing the second type gives them an edge. She has a psyduck and says golduck is one of her favorites.
Golduck _can_ learn Psychic... as an _egg move._ As far as I know, it's the only Pokémon that gets a TM move exclusively as an egg move, though it's admittedly been a long time since I last checked.

For a long time I've thought (even as far back as Gen 1) Psyduck should have been a flying type that primarily learned water moves. That then evolved into a Flying/Psychic type.
I think that would have worked with the design, without adding yet ANOTHER water/psychic type. It also would have done a lot to diversify the gen 1 types, considering the FOUR normal/flying types they have! (Eight with evolutions)
Dodrio was already a flightless flying-type (that probably should have been a ground/flying type) so it's not that crazy to make Psyduck one. And Farfetch'd similarly feels land bound.
Golduck was my favorite water type to pick up for firered runs. It worked great with surf and had good speed compared to the Lapras everyone used and hit harder with surf than gyrados.
Psyduck is my favorite Pokemon!!! I hope you do a run with the special amnesia Psyduck in Yellow one day!
Psyduck's name in Japanese is "Koduck" which translates to "Child Duck" or "Little duck". We got Psyduck which is a bit of a misnomer as it's essentially just supposed to be a duck

Actually golduck does not take hail and sandstorm damage because your golduck have the ability cloud nine shown in 29:19. Cloud nine is an pokemon ability that negates weather effects, only in generation 3. Nice video and I watched your videos.

Omg! Is this cuz I asked if you could do a Psyduck and Snorlax playthough? You should also do a Psyduck only instead of Psyduck line.
7:42 With Secret Power on your set, Mega Punch no longer has any clear use case, but Mega Kick still does.
I can give you a lot of numbers on that, but the most telling is that Secret Power and Mega Punch have overlapping damage rolls, meaning that unless you’re doing the damage calculations, you can’t even reliably tell if Mega Punch will speed up a KO.
The second most telling is that the difference in accuracy is so low that even if you need to connect twice, going with double Mega Kick will only fail 16% more of the time than double Mega Punch (roughly 7 in 12 compared to roughly 9 in 12). Ironically, a 16% failure rate is roughly the same as a single Mega Punch, which may suggest that our risk tolerance is already high enough to retain Mega Kick instead as our Hail Mary of choice.
I just won’t stand for spurning Mega Kick like that.
I just sant to note the Psyduck line is available in every mainline Pokémon game, one of a very few and the only one to never get any forms or variants.

I don't know if it would actually be faster, but another option worth mentioning for Lorelei is Brick Break: between Golduck's relatively even offensive stats and Lapras's inferior physical Defense, Brick Break might allow you to set up less against her and therefore have faster battles that are less close; of course, that would require another Ice Beam TM to re-teach it after the Lorelei fight, so it's, again, likely not worth it and I'm not even sure if it's possible with the money you have by the end, but still.
Loving the animations
I guess this is an outlier, but I like the idea of some Pokemon having affinity for another Type via levelup moveset but not enough to be dual-Type, at least in theory. (Because of that, I do think the ducks should have had a wider array of Psychic moves, though.)

For round 1 elite 4, I felt that you are over prioritizing mystic water benefits, especially if u have a setup move like calm mind, do consider sitrus berry for cases like this where u can have some recovery which may help with like the final portion. Sitrus berry can be found in FRLG outside of the gate at route 6 and right outside of the victory road entrance

The psychic type would not really help Golduck in terms of usage. Who would pick Golduck over Slowpoke or Staryu?

So you had a Damp Psyduck instead of Cloud Nine? Cloud Nine would prevent Sandstorm damage on the entire field while Golduck is active. It's actually really funny, because Golduck had a moment in VGC where it was an anti Primal Groudon tech, because it barely out speeds and specs Hydro Pump could OHKO through Desolate Land weather because of Cloud Nine
It’s Gen 3. Accessing the pc is a lot less time consuming. It might be worth it to deposit hm users if your strategy requires you to set up on the pidgeot and risk whirlwind
Golduck can learn psychic in Gen 3. But only as an egg move. For some reason, if its dad didn't pass down the move, it doesn't want to learn it. :/

I think brick break might have been useful, delete surf before the elite four and use brick break which can be bought at celadon then after Lorelei teach surf over brick break.
