Hey Scott you should really capitalize on enemies using items when you have a setup move. If you hit a Pokémon into potion range don’t just attack it again. Set up on the potion turn so you get the one hit on the next attack and you’re set up for the rest of the fight

Two of my favorites in a row... Awesome! I love both Breloom and Crawdaunts designs and how they perform competitively, they are so cool and unique. I wonder how they would do in a run with their broken hidden abilities... Crawdaunt seemed pretty good with hyper cutter even though it gets Adaptability to wreck stuff in gen 5. Technician Mach punch breloom also seems pretty busted in a solo playthrough.

Rock Lobster immediately came to mind when I saw this in my feed. Interesting run considering how Crawdaunt though having a similar exp growth rate, is the opposite type to Breloom. Good contrast. But also a great demonstration to the benefit of Hyper Cutter. Now imagine if an ability like Contrary or Competitive were available in gen 3... It would negate all threats that want to lower your stats. But yeah, Steven seems to be the one guy that has consistently filtered Pokémon and their best potential time.

I feel it really helped that you gained some decent experience with emerald before this run. Crawdaunt feels like an ultimate choice paralysis Pokemon, somwhat of an mixed attacker, dual type with both of them using the weaker stat, some good coverage moves plus set up all taking up moveslots. And all that combined with a growth rate which punishes early rare candy use. I could have easily seen it strugling forever in the late game with just a few bad placed choices.

Yaaaas Hariyama is coming! My favorite gen 3 mon of all! When I did my first playthrough of gen 3 about a month before Diamond and Pearl came out, I actually ditched my starter as an ace for Hariyama because it's such a beast. Mind you, I had beaten RBY and GSC all with 90% my starter, so doing this with Hariyama was a new experience to basically beat the game with a found mon, rather than a gift mon. I think you're going to love that run, Scott.

Corphish is one of those Pokémon it's SO easy to miss in playthroughs, a combination of eing found in a location where you need to specifically backtrack for it, and it not being overwhelmingly good.
Nosepass and Jigglypuff also have this problem in Hoenn. In other regions I can think of Wobbuffet, Lickitung Natu and Smeargle in Johto, Dhelmise in Alola, or Buneary and Vulpix in BW2...

You played well in this run! I have only one piece of advice for you.
A common theme that comes up in many runs is that you land a hit which leaves a key Pokemon in the red, which leads to a Full Restore. You then use the same move again, which puts it back in heal range and you get stuck in a healing loop when it is otherwise easily avoidable.
An example of this punishing you is your first attempt against Steven in this video. You bring Skarmory down to the red and it heals up, then you use Brick Break again. If you had used Brick Break into Surf into Brick Break, you would have avoided the heal range as it would be in the high orange, then you would have way more BB and Rest PP remaining for the rest of the battle - this would have mattered a lot as you said yourself that in that same attempt, you ran out of PP. This was a totally avoidable loss.
You would have entered the Claydol with more HP, then could have used Surf to have it enter the orange, it would set up Light Screen, which you then break with Brick Break and that allows you to finish it off with a Surf, meaning you would have taken one less Earthquake and therefore had the HP to take out Metagross for a first-try-victory.
This sequencing error is the only thing I can honestly even consider as a mistake at all. You did really well. I'm looking forward to both of the mentioned runs, they're some interesting choices.

I didn't think Crawdaunt would do so well in this challenge, so kudos to the little guy. I'm more familiar with his pre-evo Corphish, who was a bro in Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky.
Also dumb idea that I didn't think of yesterday, but was thinking of when I was watching this video: in Route 118, 119, 120, and 121 you can catch wild Zigzagoon above level 20. I bring this up because all of them have the Pickup ability in Gen 3, and above level 20 they have a 4% chance of getting a Rare Candy if Pickup activates, and you can exploit this by having multiple of them in your party and occasionally checking them for items. Granted, this probably won't be useful for fully evolved mons because you're going to bleed some time checking them, but if you're doing a middle or first stage evo and you have to grind in the mid or late game, you could possibly end up with more Rare Candies than you'd normally have access to. Though... like I said I dunno how useful it would be in speedruns. I've used it myself, but I've never done a speedrun, and you'd have to go out of your way to catch 3-4 Zigzagoon just to have in your party, so might not be worth it.

  • @inventiveusername5191
    @inventiveusername5191 Год назад

Respect to the Craw. If you think about, he actually had a lot going for him, including hitting very hard, a somewhat advantageous levelup group, arguably the best setup move for physical attackers, immunity to intimidate and a type advantage for Roxanne, Flannery, Tate and Liza and a good chunk of Steven's team. There also wasn't any trainer he didn't have some kind of move to deal with. Put all that together and it's not surprising he did well. As Scott said, his big disadvantage was his speed.
I think we're seeing that water is the type to beat here. For a really good water mon with coverage for Juan and Wallace, the only trainer who has that much of an advantage is Wallace, and as we've seen here his team isn't that bulky so if they're fast and hit hard they can get through him before he can do that much.
So what I'm saying is that I could see Kyogre perhaps being the fastest mon in Emerald. Drizzle-boosted water pulse plus 150 SPA and 90 speed is going to be brutal in the early game, then later it gets 100% accurate thunder, the usual suite of ice moves and also calm mind for setup.

Crawdaunt did way better than I thought it would. I thought its bad Speed and low special bulk would hurt a lot more than it did.
The other Water/Dark type introduced in this gen, Sharpedo, could be interesting, but in the more difficult sense. To my knowledge, before Surf, Sharpedo gets NO Water-type attacking moves, meaning no way to hit Wattson's Magneton for neutral damage, and its also the Slow growth rate. Also infamously frail, but quite fast, so a unique circumstance there.

knock off's an interesting move as theoretically, despite the low power, its possible crawdaunt knocking the manetric's sitrus berry away, may give Crawdaunt a range to ko with bubble beam.
but that'd depend on the damage both hits deal alongside crawdaunt's level
thats actually the only use I see knock off having, getting rid of gym leader sitrus berries for a theoretically better chance of Crawdaunt living a bit longer, or koing the mon. watson's the only place I see the actual usefulness of knock off as everywhere after watson Crawdaunt'll eventually have the power to oneshot most mons no problem w/swords dance

9:30 Getting rid of Protect is ordinarily not a great idea, but Crawdaunt was strong enough to make up for it. The issue is that Protect-using Pokemon *literally* can't lose to Norman's Slaking, who is ordinarily a giant stumbling block in solo runs. Might be useful to note for future Pokemon runs where someone has Detect/Protect via level-up by that point. Great run.

Good point. I’ve got a few thoughts on this subject:
Dig is better than Protect for Norman, also just having a weak special move counters the Slaking quite well. The aspect that needs to be balanced is that protect is basically dead weight outside of the Norman battle so carrying it for awhile can reduce your available options and slow a Pokémon down.

Are there any plans of doing a Sharpedo run? They have the same type and identical offensive stats, so it'll be interesting to see whether Crawdaunt's bulk or Sharpedo's speed win out.

With Crabman's beefy attack stat, I was hoping this was going to be the run where we actually get to make Sludge Bomb useful. Then I remembered Return exists 🙃 Maybe for Sceptile and, like, Wallace's Ludicolo?

As an English teacher who is a stickler for pronunciation, what you can do for Juan so it doesn't become Won is remember "WHO - on". Because who won, you did! :)

Knock Off has its purpose, but it wouldn't become really good until Gen 6, when its Base Power goes from 20 to 65, and it gets a 50% buff if you use it and it actually knocks off the opponent's held item. Hariyama is super good, I've used it in several of my Sapphire playthroughs, it is very bulky with HP and Defense, and (I'm speaking from experience here) don't sleep on Bulk Up into Arm Thrust. Vital Throw can also be a good option against Sidney.
    Spoilers
That has to be the lowest level a non-legendary has beaten Wallace in Emerald. Also if Claydol ever sets up Reflect or Light Screen, Brick Break can shatter them.

I really am in a camp of my own, where I like dark types Cacturne, Sharpedo and Crawdaunt. The water types problem is that they have higher attack than special attack, while Cacturne has an even 115 in both. All 3 have incredible attacks, but they fail to utilize their STAB. In gen 4 this is all fixed, but they all still have incredible stats in one or the other that they won’t use at all. Like Cacturne; he has a massive 115 in a stat he’ll never use, and would / should be distributed in other stats. With Sharpedo in gen 4 onwards, he would be helped if he could put some sp atk in his defences, which is very weak, while in gen 4, he’d want his massive attack distributed. Same goes for Crawdaunt. Basically, they’re all just 1 gen ahead of their time. Imagine if gen 3 and 4 switched, and Emerald came out with the modern split. It would be absolutely massive. I’d love that.
