I was a first-time hunter last year, and wasn't going to use sticks until I saw your webbing mod last year. Brought 3 deer into the freezer. Looking forward to trying them out again this year. Really appreciate the work you put into your videos!
Just found this video I've watched many of your other ones. The content and quality are 1st rate in all you do and it shows you really think things through. You are one of the best out there with hunting and hunting DIY content.
Garrett, I made a set of four last year based on your design. I used a Bridgeport mill which I'm lucky to have access to, and drilled holes instead of milling. I also bar-tacked my own set of versa-straps like you showed in another post. They work great! Thanks for posting this up, man.
Nice design! I made a skeletonized tube ladder 25 yrs ago.....love them! I located the tie off above center to eliminate the "piviot"....they also have a loose "peg" that they stack and pin together....can assemble the ladder and stand it up....tie off as you climb.... If you sand blast the aluminum, clean them good and than paint....makes the paint stick! Gives them a nice dull matt finish.... I worked my ass off to make my 2 set-up's....by hand...before CNC.... My stands incorporated A.L.I.C.E. pack frames for the waist load belt and QD shoulder straps..... sand blast'em and paint'em you will love the result! 😀😀👍👍
Very cool. Very well explained. I'm a machinist so I get all your explanations and even more so the work involved. I've used your rope mod, I've used your webbing step mod, I've used your silencing idea with hockey tape. Thanks so much! I'll probably stick with the lone wolf sticks but your new sticks are slick. I'm a short guy so I lean a stick against the tree and climb to hang the first step to gain some height. I use a millennium M7 but hate the hanging block. I'm currently doing diy versa buttons to fix that. Thanks again for your ideas and information.
This is awesome. I’ve been in the climbing stick rabbit hole all spring. I think I may do something similar or buy the api sticks and mod them. Thanks for sharing.
Great job sir. I built several last year similar to this and similar to the lone wolf sticks with the swivel steps. I dont have a cnc machine so I was all from scratch. I'd be happy to send some pictures if your interested. I also built an aluminum stand but it needs some improvements after using it last year.
I was expecting something I'd maybe be able to do on my own to cut cost, but with the amount of technical stuff you're doing I was dead wrong. A lot of thorough effort went into this I can tell, awesome sticks man! I'd like to get into saddle hunting eventually but for the time being I'll have to stick to my hand-me-down climber and building ground blinds and sitting on a 5 gallon bucket for the time being haha.
Those look awesome brother! I need to get in gear and make a set like that. My 20" muddy sticks just don't cut it for me and I can't always climb with spikes. These look perfect. Well done!
Awesome plans, execution and video. I have been working on Mods for years to make things lighter, quieter, and more efficient. Your designs put mine to shame. I have always had to try to find workarounds for equipment pieces. Your work makes me want to go out and buy a CNC machine or hire a fabricator to make 1 or 2 sets of "Ultimate" sticks and a foot rest for my AeroHunter sling. I agree with the below -- if you ever get into fabrication and sales or sell your designers to Lone Wolf or XOP, I will be one of the first in line. Thanks for the great ideas and good hunting. Mike D
Great idea and design. On the spacers you could use UHMW or something similar and I believe it would hold up and be corrosion resistant. And cheaper. Great video thanks
The style step you're remembering is from the Leverage brand of tree sticks made around year 2009-2011 I have a couple sets of them and the step design is almost identical. Only difference is the leverage brand steps fold
+Jackson Jordon I ended up finding the original picture. It was actually a Muddy step that was posted on saddlehunter and was a single non-folding step. Since then they've gone to folding steps too. I see what you're saying about the cutouts though. They do look very similar.
This is an awesome setup. Looks great. I will definitely be looking on how to cut weight out of my setup next year. I am realizing that I am carrying a lot of unnecessary weight!
will have to run up a cad of the steps and tree brackets (assume they are ALu as well ) get some Cut to profile by my laser cutter guy . you dont see anything like this in UK mainly as No bow hunting . but one would be handy to hop up trees for Trail cam mount etc
This is fantastic. I love the idea of making my own custom sticks. Do you have the vectors for your steps available somewhere so I can mill them on my CNC?
Do you have a video on your diy platform? Can you share a part list? I couldn’t find anything on your channel. Maybe I just missed it. Great video! You seem very handy! Great ability to have. Keep up the great videos!
I like this climbing stick set up because you have the speed of the ropes but its also more quiet then the prostick cams because you dont have a metal to metal click if you pull the ropes out fast...you just wrap it around the wheel hub and loop it...
Way to go with the home built sticks. Suggestion: when money, power, time and space allow...get a Bridgeport mill :) Next thing you know it's DIY Production & Fabrication Inc. Just joking, great job! Good luck in the weeks to come. Scott
I love modifying things and hunting. This is out of my league. What's a good step system that's similar that I can just order off amazon. I may order a bunch, for different stand locations.
Try these, they're basically the same as the ones shown here. I made my own similar to Garret's design, but it's time-consuming and requires a milling-machine. Here's the link: www.huntingbeastgear.com/collections/climbing-sticks/products/september-2020-pre-order-beast-climbing-stick-unassembled
Great video! I just finished making my own set. I don't have the fancy router, so just used a table saw and built a jig for notches... I did finish the last bit with a file. I did have a question though... what diameter tree do you plan for? Trying to figure out how long to make my straps.
What an awesome video! I've been toying around with this idea for years. Question. I'm about to do the rope mod on my helium sticks. I have 8mm rope, do you know what size spacer I need to get a secure lock with the rope? Thanks man.
These look awesome and just what I was looking for. As a taller hunter the commercial steps are too close together. Do you need to use a steel spacer or could you use aluminum? Also, what size fender washer did you use? Would be awesome if you were able to share or at least sell your CAD drawings :)
You don't need to use the steel spacers. The bolt provides the strength. I've since changed to nylon spacers. The fender washer is 1.25" diameter. If you send me a message on Facebook I could send a CAD file.
Thanks for the quick reply! I'm not on Facebook but I'll have my son send you a message! Are you saying you use a nylon spacer now for the diy versa button?
Does flingging arrow still have his account? I rememeber if he was like one of the 1st guys to start 1 sticking. I think he was like russian. I cant remember
Ah yes, Jared is still around but now he works at Tethrd and helps out with a lot of their media. If you look at their page you'll see a number of his recent hunts and product overviews. He also started making some traditional archery accessories under Ginger Ninja custom hunting gear. cbigbear was also one of the first I've ever seen to showcase single sticking. I still see him post on Facebook sometimes but as himself.
I still have some of the original ropes in use from this build. Others I've swapped out to black just because of the color after the initial coating wears down.
I have API sticks I just got from basspro and they use the exact same step piece you used, just letting u know because you said you weren't sure of the brand.
Garrett, I love your channel and have watched all your videos. This one in particular has been very helpful as I rebuild my own ultra-light climbing sticks. I have seen that you have used both Amsteel (can't remember the size you used ) and PMI 8mm accessory cord. Considering all factors, which rope material do you prefer? I would appreciate your opinion.
@@DIYSportsman Wonderful, I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to reply! . . . . . last question. .. . I'm in the Minneapolis area. . . .is there a local place to buy amsteel or did you get yours online?
I looked into it at one point but the liability insurance was prohibitive. I have seen guys on the saddle hunter forum selling just the steps. Ive also seen guys take steps from other sticks like the new API's or older Muddy Hunter sticks.
Great video, I watch alot of yours and live the channel. You should produce and sell these sticks, you could make money while putting a smile on peoples faces, i kniw i would buy them!
I've bought amsteel from LFS marine and Dutchware in the past and then done a locked brummel splice for the eye. Its pretty easy to do with tutorials on RUclips.
ok thanks, I've been considering using this grade of aluminum to save weight while adding length to my muddy pro sticks but wasn't sure if I would be sacrificing too much strength.

Your videos rock Garrett. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, answering questions and appearing humble. You are such a refreshing youtuber.
Pretty sweet, dude. Not only do you have a good setup, but your video is incredibly clear. Super helpful, so big thanks!
I don't think I've ever heard someone refer to "plastic deformation" in a video about hunting gear. So obviously, Subscribed!

Sweet DIY! Could you add the links for everything you bought in the description?
How do ur sticks lock in place ,this is a great video and great idea thanks
And lock in place im talking about stack them on top of each other to walk around
They stack together pretty much exactly like Lone Wolf sticks do. I hold them together with the Gear Ties.
Great idea for the sticks, do you currently use the ropes on your sticks? if not - why not?

They are nice steps but a tad heavy for only 3 steps
I was going say I have an older model of Muddy sticks that have the same step design
I'll take a set. Lemme know where to send the check! :)
What size spacer should be used for 8 mm climbing rope on my versa button? Thank you for the great content
The stock Lone Wolf versa buttons work great with 8mm. They are 0.50".
Instead of a spacer would 2 nuts work in the same manner as long as they are a total of 1/2 inch from washer to post?

Just wondering why you took your climbing sticks apart to use the parts to build climbing sticks?
At the time I had the components already laying there for use, so it was quicker/easier to just use those than try to replicate on the CNC.
What size is your Amsteel rope? Dang, that seems awful small. But the break strength of it is huge!
1/4"
Any idea how to make a stick quiver for hawk climbing sticks
You the man bud. Thanks a lot.
Hey Garret, would you be willing to sell one of your steps? I'd like to put one on my lone wolf sticks.
There's a guy who sells some at doublesteps.com that are very similar and cheaper than I'd be able to make them for.
thanks a ton!

Is the 6061 T6 aluminum square tube you bought lighter than the aluminum tube that lone wolf uses?
+ryan miller It's lighter due to the wall thickness being lower. So it's lighter but not as strong.
What are some of the dimensions of the steps? Height of the center and depth of the channel?
did you hunt with these this past year? how rigid was the 1/16" wall thickness?
I used them for practically every hunt. It held up fine for me. I don't have any destructive testing to set a weight limit though.
ok thanks, I've been considering using this grade of aluminum to save weight while adding length to my muddy pro sticks but wasn't sure if I would be sacrificing too much strength.
So you used 1"x1"x.065 6061 tubing?
Yes
That's how you kept them at 2#. I used .125 and I'm at 2.4#.
Thank you.
Is this the prototype for the beaststick?
No, Dan did his own development for his sticks.
@@DIYSportsman I was hoping you were part of that venture for your own benefit. How are your sticks holding up? They look very well built.
Where did you get the CNC machine from?
I ordered it from Carbide3d.
What Kind of bolts did you use to secure the v-bracket and the steps to the climbing sticks?
Quick question ..... With material/shipping and your time how much do you think they actually cost ?
Can I buy some sticks from you?
Hi Jesse, I don't sell them, but the closest ones in design available commercially are the Beast Gear sticks.
DIY Sportsman Thanks
Do you still have the CNC file for the steps?
When making your own versa button in this video, did you still use 8mm rope?
1/4" amsteel
Did you use 1/16" wall or 1/8" wall tubing?
1/16
That was great, thanks very much.
How much did this cost you
Over $2k if you factor in the cost of the CNC. Raw materials were about $35-45/stick depending on how shipping is combined. Machining the standoffs instead of using the LW ones would drop the raw material cost but increase the build time.
Don't have CNC machine, anyone know if there is a place I can buy the V-bracket for the back and the steps?
+john heitkamp If you can find a set of used Muddy Hunter sticks, they have the same step design. And you'd get tree brackets. XOP sells V brackets but they use a little bigger bolt.
Great info, thank you sir!
Awesome Garret, i'd by it
I think you should try some sort of carbon fiber stick.
Did not have any old steps thanks
