Thanks for the video. I switched to the 8mm rope from REI. I find one of the biggest advantages besides noise and weight is the fact that you don't have to worry about twist in the rope. I find you have to be more careful when placing the webbed straps to make sure they do not twist up. Keep up the great videos.
Another great video. Nice job. I used the the ropes for a year and switched back to the straps last year. All of your thoughts on the ropes are very accurate. When climbing semi leaning or crooked trees I noticed the bottom of the stick didn't "stick" to the tree as well. Sometimes it wanted to kick out. I also feel the straps are easier to use in the dark and hang with one hand. Mostly adjusting the length of strap. I love how quiet the ropes are. Makes putting up and taking down stealthy. Also love the length of the longer ropes especially for the first stick. My top three sticks are straps and I left my bottom stick with a rope. Mostly because that is the only stick where using two hands is easy to do. Again, great video and great review of this alternative method. Both styles have their advantages.
Awesome video. Did this on my API sticks after cutting them to 24 inch step spacing. For anyone wondering out there you can use this mod on the API versa button as well. Heck I even used parachord and it still held even though I dont recommend chord that small.

I also tried the rope method on my LW Assault stand. I agree with Common Ground Bowhunter, I couldn't get the Amsteel rope tight enough to get the offset bracket to stick to the tree. The rope work fine for sticks but I'm also staying with the LW strap for the stand. DIY - love your vids and incorporated many of your ideas on my equipment.

My treks are up hill , I have been wanting to set up a few stands where I know the deer are , I've been using a portable treestand but that is heavy in the long run. I've been looking at these climbing sticks. I really dig the bottom strap idea, I think this could improve next years bow hunts big time!
Great video. That's a tough call as to which method is better. Another option that I'm sure you have heard of for silencing those buckles is kayak paddle grips. I've done both methods, and the Yak Grips have worked way better overall.
How about using a prusik knot on a climbing rope? Using the same concept, but use the prusik loop to go over the versa-button. I think I’m going to have to try that.
I've been using this method the past week to hang some stands on public ground. Leave the stand but come back with sticks. One other disadvantage to the ropes is forgetting the rope routing method. I forgot to go behind the fixed loop and had to put a double hitch knot to hold the stick. With the strap, it's a loop and cinch.
That's a pretty decent rope mod,but have you considered bolting up cam cleats to your Lone Wolf climbing sticks? Just throw the rope around the tree,sinch it in the cam cleat followed by a half hitch,and done! Something like what z7blackout did on Leverage sticks!
It should work well, bit I think that mod is pretty expensive unless there's another option for buying the cleats I don't know about. Almost to the point where you'd be better off just picking up some of the muddy sticks that already have the cleats installed.
+DIY Sportsman True,cam cleats are not cheap.I would have gone with Muddy sticks to,but they only offer the 20" model with cam cleats....and they weight the same as my XOP 32". None the less keep up the good work!
I just got one wolf sticks somebody modded just like you. If have to say though, making an UCR isn't hard nor requires special equipment (just a copper wire). I've made a lot of them and whoppie slings for my hammock stuff for the family). If I find the PMI too stretchy then I might switch to Amsteel (even thinner and lighter and stronger).
I'm not a huge fan of whoopie slings or UCRs for this application. There's too much fiddle factor trying to get them tight. I do prefer amsteel as a material though, because of the lower stretch and ease of splicing an eye.
@@DIYSportsman I can see that. Using PMI cord I can make the cinch almost 1 handed after throwing the cord around the tree (using my head as a "third hand" similar to you to hold the stick). UCR /whoopie requires a second hand to "milk the bury". I'll have to try it with one of my hammock whoppies to see if I can even get it tight enough for no initial sag (I doubt it, in which case, what's the point? Lol)
Quick question. At the 1:55 mark you thread the rope from top to bottom and at 5:35 you go from bottom up. Have you found that both ways work the same or do you prefer one way over the other? Thanks. Your videos are solid and quality - def appreciate the time and effort that goes into them.
Great video brother. have you thought about learning how to eye splice rope to eliminate the overhand knots? I learned this past week how to splice all my end loops and it makes for an even neater set up. I like the rope mods myself and i'm a big fan or the cam cleat on the Muddy's. Just wish they made a 32" with the cam system!

DIY - one more question. I'm a fan of Amsteel rope - strong, easy, clean looking splice for an eye over the versa button. I'm trying to decide on the size 1/4" or 5/16". I'd like to try just the rope mod for awhile but also have thoughts toward possibly going with cam cleats in the future. The quarter inch is lighter, cheaper, and fits a small cam cleat should I go that route. The 5/16 more expensive and at the thickness limit of small cam cleat (meaning have to go larger cam cleat doesn't fit stick as well). Any thoughts taking into consideration throwing around tree (weight), untying, etc. for the best size?
+J Cam I haven't tried Amsteel rope, but of the thread I saw on ArcheryTalk a while back, it seemed like 5/16" was the most common size used by the guys who chose Amsteel. I think it would probably depend on how likely it is that you'll use the cam cleats.

My favorite is 1/4" amsteel. But in order to use it, you need to swap the versa button out for a fender washer and 3/8" long spacer. Otherwise there isn't enough squeeze. Amsteel is quite strong, low stretch, can be spliced with an eye loop easily (No knots) and is crazy ligjtweight. It's quite expensive though.

+Abby Miller I imagine it would work on XOP though I haven't tried it to determine if the same rope diameter would be appropriate. A few guys have tried it on stands, but it doesn't work as well since the seat will usually pull out away from the tree a bit due to the stretch.

I have 6 of the LW minis and was thinking about getting rid of the buckle strap on email for noise and weight. In the dark less chance of unexpected noise and definitely faster pack out/in. After watching your video I went outside and tried it with some 8mm I had laying around and it worked perfectly! Thinking about ordering the PMI in black around 9' sections. The trial piece I tied a figure 8 followthru knot and was solid. Was gonna order the stick Talons too! 😀 Thanks

I never have. It's been a couple years since I've used it much after going to the Tethrd stick attachment but I used this and moreso the same method with amsteel on my DIY sticks for years without issue.

I'm not aware of any instances where someone has had it break. That being said, you can always remove the plastic button and replace with a nylon spacer and steel fender washer.
OK what kind of weight limit. You appear to be substantially under my 68 year old cruising weight of 270. The idea of naiders and swaiders with sticks and saddle appeals to me from gear carry weight.
The ropes themselves are quite strong. Amsteel, which is what I currently use, has a break strength of around 8000 pounds. Other ropes vary based on construction.
doing the same thing except i placed a washer about the diameter of the versa button between the bolt and versa button. The plastic versa button is not intended for this use and for .75 cents (all 4) you can add a lot of strength.
iGraphics Team I think it's very similar to having it on the climbing stick. You get more sag, so it's best to start the rope at an angle upward around the tree so it has less room to slide once you cam the stand to the tree. Also, I might put an extra half hitch in just for added peace of mind. If you're already thinking of trying it on a stick, just try it out on the stand at low height and see if you'll like it or not. That's the best way to really decide for yourself.

The rope I used isn't static line, it's accessory cord which has a little more stretch to it. Static would probably be better in this application, but like you, I was unable to find it in the right size and color by the foot. Here's the REI link: www.rei.com/product/716227/pmi-accessory-cord-8mm I bought it in the store, and it looks like the color might be a little different. However, I'd bet PMI's website has more color options. I'm not sure if they sell by the foot though.
DIY Sportsman I just found black 10mm static rope, which is close to 3/8", at backcountrygear.com. It is only $.80/foot. Thought I would let you know what I found, I may order some today, do you think 10mm is too thick to properly seat behind the versa button and get a locking effect? (It's rated for 30KN)
Hmm, well we know that 3/8" rope of a certain kind works. However, the 11mm static that I have for my lineman's belt doesn't fit. I would venture to guess that the 10mm might also be too thick.
In general I think camo is very overrated for deer hunting. Deer are wired to see movement before they see colors that are out of place. The fact that the rope is multi colored will help break up its outline against the trunk. That being said, if they offered this rope in camo I'd probably get it because it certainly wouldn't hurt and would look cooler. But no I'm not super concerned about it.
I should clarify. I think camouflage colors are overrated for deer. The overall pattern of lights and darks can make a big difference in the right circumstances. For instance lighter patterns if you're skylined in a small tree. Given that the ropes are tight against the tree they're low risk. Most straps from the manufacturer are solid color. I'd be more concerned about scent on the stick than what it looked like
Jeff T. Lone wolf says their stands are compatible with trees as small as 4" in diameter. The problem with sitting in a tree that small is that when you stand up, sit down, or shift your weight the entire tree shakes which can get you busted. However, I've probably hunted some 6 or 7" diameter trees before when they were the best option.
DIY Sportsman I've been using my buddy's ladder stand for a couple years now and it can get noisy so I think I will be buying a hang-on for this season. The Lone Wolf products seem simple and easy to use. I really enjoy your videos bud!

+AS REAL AS IT GETS It's pretty tough to find by the foot unfortunately. I've seen 8mm static rope in colors like tan but usually you have to buy an entire section which gets pretty expensive. I'm using Amsteel gray on my current DIY sticks, though the gray wears to more of an off-white over time.

OK what kind of weight limit. You appear to be substantially under my 68 year old cruising weight of 270. The idea of naiders and swaiders with sticks and saddle appeals to me from gear carry weight.
The ropes themselves are quite strong. Amsteel, which is what I currently use, has a break strength of around 8000 pounds. Other ropes vary based on construction.
Could you tell me where you got the wrap for the those sticks, would love to do it to mine. Thank you

doing the same thing except i placed a washer about the diameter of the versa button between the bolt and versa button. The plastic versa button is not intended for this use and for .75 cents (all 4) you can add a lot of strength.
+robert sophiea On my new sticks I just used a steel washer like you, bolt, and a chrome steel spacer to increase the diameter.
how long is the rope you have before you tie the over hand knot? I see REI has that same rope for .55 a foot

What do you think about using the rope mod on a treestand with a versa button attachment system?
iGraphics Team I think it's very similar to having it on the climbing stick. You get more sag, so it's best to start the rope at an angle upward around the tree so it has less room to slide once you cam the stand to the tree. Also, I might put an extra half hitch in just for added peace of mind. If you're already thinking of trying it on a stick, just try it out on the stand at low height and see if you'll like it or not. That's the best way to really decide for yourself.

The rope I used isn't static line, it's accessory cord which has a little more stretch to it. Static would probably be better in this application, but like you, I was unable to find it in the right size and color by the foot. Here's the REI link: www.rei.com/product/716227/pmi-accessory-cord-8mm I bought it in the store, and it looks like the color might be a little different. However, I'd bet PMI's website has more color options. I'm not sure if they sell by the foot though.
DIY Sportsman I just found black 10mm static rope, which is close to 3/8", at backcountrygear.com. It is only $.80/foot. Thought I would let you know what I found, I may order some today, do you think 10mm is too thick to properly seat behind the versa button and get a locking effect? (It's rated for 30KN)
Hmm, well we know that 3/8" rope of a certain kind works. However, the 11mm static that I have for my lineman's belt doesn't fit. I would venture to guess that the 10mm might also be too thick.

In general I think camo is very overrated for deer hunting. Deer are wired to see movement before they see colors that are out of place. The fact that the rope is multi colored will help break up its outline against the trunk. That being said, if they offered this rope in camo I'd probably get it because it certainly wouldn't hurt and would look cooler. But no I'm not super concerned about it.
I should clarify. I think camouflage colors are overrated for deer. The overall pattern of lights and darks can make a big difference in the right circumstances. For instance lighter patterns if you're skylined in a small tree. Given that the ropes are tight against the tree they're low risk. Most straps from the manufacturer are solid color. I'd be more concerned about scent on the stick than what it looked like
What's the smallest diameter tree you would set a treestand on?
Jeff T. Lone wolf says their stands are compatible with trees as small as 4" in diameter. The problem with sitting in a tree that small is that when you stand up, sit down, or shift your weight the entire tree shakes which can get you busted. However, I've probably hunted some 6 or 7" diameter trees before when they were the best option.
DIY Sportsman I've been using my buddy's ladder stand for a couple years now and it can get noisy so I think I will be buying a hang-on for this season. The Lone Wolf products seem simple and easy to use. I really enjoy your videos bud!

so I got the 8mm PMI rope from REI and it doesnt seem to "grab" enough? I wonder if LONE Wolf widened that gap between the button and alloy bar?

I don't see any reason why they wouldn't. The rope diameter may or may not be the same though.
I figured the concept would work the same. I didn’t word the question correctly. I was mostly wondering if the rope diameter used for the lone wolf stick would work for the beast sticks.

+AS REAL AS IT GETS It's pretty tough to find by the foot unfortunately. I've seen 8mm static rope in colors like tan but usually you have to buy an entire section which gets pretty expensive. I'm using Amsteel gray on my current DIY sticks, though the gray wears to more of an off-white over time.
