    It’s great this guy is doing an educational program. STEM + motorsports (or anything hands and mechanical) is critical for producing quality engineers. JPL wants people with gear head background because their designs work so much in real world applications than the geniuses (I don’t mean that sarcastically) who go to MIT, but have worked on designs in the theoretical realm only. SpaceX and JPL sponsored a gravity kart program for kids I worked with because they know it will be a good investment for creating a talent pool that will help them keep raising the bar.

    • @brothergrimaldus3836
      @brothergrimaldus3836 Год назад

      Air density does have a measurable effect. But he's talking about the supersonic run in the car.
      And with that air density is dependent on temperature.

    This was a very interesting, educational video... Fascinating.,
    ..Great Video Jay.!

  • @xShooter7
    @xShooter7 11 лет назад

    It does, really it's just air density that changes the speed of sound. But while altitude does change air density, temperature changes air density much faster. And when you're talking about someplace like Bonneville, he is going to experience changes in temperature but not altitude.

    you know. as an air craft mechanic / avionics tech for the past 40 years. i got used to numbers like that. in MPH / %MACH air speed.. but in a car ??? on the ground ??? at 14.7 lbs ? wont the car burn up from air friction ? an airplane gos through a lot of changes at that speed. but it is made to do that at alt. it's a lot easer at altitudes. lol good luck Andy.

  • @mikeoftheages
    @mikeoftheages 11 лет назад

    Exactly, we played. Some harder than others, some with great success and some with great failure. We learn from the failures and become better, faster and stronger. That's the human experience. It wasn't long ago that forks, knives and guns use to be made out of wood or steel. If it wasn't for electrolysis or poly-carbon plastics you would still get splinters or lock jaw every time you sit down and enjoy a meal. I'm guess I won't joke about guns too(too soon).

      Define "cheaper." Known flaw in the BMW S85 V10 engine. When bearing failure occurs in the engine, the S85 V10 costs $35,000 to replace. BMW doesn't even make this engine anymore or offer it in any product for obvious reasons. The S65 V8 has proven to be a far more durable product.

    i dont know if its an issue for them but it seems so for me that the faster you go the more land you need and we dont really have places that long and that flat to attempt such a thing... and also the 1 hour limitation... the more complicated the technology the harder it could be to prep a car in that little time

    The right stuff for sure. But I wonder if he'll ever actually get to drive the Bloodhound. It's been delayed so many times now, I have lost almost all of my faith!

    • @RB747domme
      @RB747domme 6 лет назад +1

      ludocrat The Bloodhound has never been delayed, it's just taking a long and very measured approach to achieving it's goal.
      They're never going to rush it - people's lives are on the line. There's an awful lot to learn, especially with shock waves and air pressure as Andy was talking about to Jay, so I think it's worthy of them taking an extra few years to get it right.
      But we now know the car runs, it's been built, it's been tested, it's done over 200 miles an hour on a test track, the rocket motor has been tested, the jet engine is fully fledged and tested, and they're just putting the final nuts and bolts together to make sure that things go as planned in 2019.
      It was never meant to be done in just a few year. They've had to raise an awful lot of charity & private money, and investment and sponsorship along the way.
      They've never had any financial help from the government that's all contrary to popular belief. Even the ej200 was a spare that was lent to them only - and given back when they finished with it.
      That's the difference between people that are doing things in their backyard and killing themselves, and people that know that the forces on the vehicle at 850, 900, or 1000 miles per hour are just unimaginable.
