This is really helpful, especially for my current cosplay. I have to make two foam robotic arms and a helmet. I use walmart's paint which is 50¢-$3 which is cheap for matte, gloss, glow, or metallic.
On of my favorite methods of achieving a weathered metal effect, specifically when working with metallic silver, is starting off with a darker color base. For instance metallic black or if its going to be really dingy, matt black. Then I go in with some dry brushing in the metallic silver over the top on the more raised/open areas (avoiding getting too much or the silver into the creases/recesses) I just build that in there and I've been able to achieve some really cool weathered metal textures. Of course if its too shiny and I need it more weathered I'll go in with black and brown acrylic where needed. Then I'll go in with either a gloss or matt clear varnish sealer, depending on how shiny/dull I want it, to seal and protect my paint job. I did that for a helmet my husband built recently and we got tons of compliments on the paint job (my husband was a tad jealous since he built the thing and all people wanted to talk about was the paint job an how they couldn't believe it wasn't real metal haha xD)
A very well presented and easy to follow tutorial. Made more sense than most of the others I've seen and using minimal items and cheap at that! Cheers!

I binge-watched all your videos, and seeing the amount of work you (and other cosplayers) put into your cosplays is awesome. I just did a super-rusty faux finish and I painted the whole thing rust first, then drybrushed on gunmetal, then some silver highlights. That way there's rust in all the crevices. Goes to show you can end up at the same place by starting backwards!

so I'm coming over from paper, resin, and fiberglass and going for foam. how can I get like silver scratches and stuff on a piece that's painted like black or something. I'd usually put a base coat of silver on and then black over it and then sand the black off, but I don't think you could do that with foam.
Does using this technique for weathering work with most hard surfaces? Currently making pepakura armour which will be fibreglassed and hardened etc. Thank you!
+ZonZonZonbi Thanks for the tip! I will be mixing the last layer in with gel coat, then applying another layer of gel coat on top which sort of self levels so hopefully it will smooth out. Thanks again, love the videos!
@@Theonceandfutureslayer I’m thinking that natural weathering might be a bit difficult to control and unpredictable and I’m planning on trying to maintain structural integrity and artificial weathering might cause the same problem so painting damage is the only option
My first attempt at this failed so terribly. It pretty much didn't come off enough to show the base coat without scrubbing so hard that it also took off the base. Are you thinning your acrylic paint down at all prior to brushing on? I've got a video up to show what I mean (ruclips.net/video/hCf2CmSNkik/видео.htmlm34s). Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! What will help you is, plasti-dipping and sealing your foam before painting. Applying acrylic straight to foam will give you some weird results. Hope that helps!
How do you transport your armor/cosplay if your flying to another country where the con is at? do u like ship it there or can u just pack it in a really huge suitcase?

You use, colors that naturally the piece you are working on will get dirty with... mechanical stuff tends to use black due the grease and oil. Some metals under the rain use brown and reddis... rust colorss,... somthing that gets around mud use brown, You can also go for some patina colors in certain areas if you want to really go into detail.

I was actually really skeptical of foam at first. I used fiberglass/bondo before and thought that foam wouldn't hold up to convention wear and tear. I was wrong! Foam bends and needs minimal touching up between cons after you get used to making stufff with it.

But the shoulders are wrong, too angled and the jointed areas are far off. The chest piece isn't even bent or angled or any other details to make it look good, it's just one piece

Also oil paints are really good for weathering if the acrylic dries too quickly. A little more expensive than acrylic though I think. But from what I've seen acrylic works just as fine

Pro tip - put lotion on your hands and arms before painting. The paint that you get on your skin will come off much more easily!

I've found that it does yes. Just be sure to sand your fiberglass very well before weathering because this technique will highlight imperfections!

Ok yeah, I hadn't sealed my test piece, I had only sprayed base coat, so I'll definitely give that a shot next time. Thanks for the tip!

Oil paint and mineral spirits are easier to work with.
