I really enjoy your videos and the fact that you use consumer grade equipment to produce your images. I am really glad that I found your Channel.
Thank-you Sean! I always want to keep the spirit of the channel focused on the idea that "light is light" (-:
Thank you Dustin for sharing your total mastery. Just perfect.
So nice of you.. thank-you greatly Anthony!
Love the late night studio session
Me too!
Your videos are always so helpful and clean. Thank you!
So glad we could help out, enjoy your day!
Great stuff, once again, Dustin. Looking forward to the next show.
Hey Thanks David!
My diffusion material is Lightform a product available decades ago. The diffusion material fits over a plastic tubular frame with elastic straps and the frame has a clamp that mounts off a C-Stan arm. Two sizes, 3 x 3 feet and 4 x 8 feet. Also comes with other materials / Diffusion, White, Black and Silver. In addition to that Lightform also made three sided silver reflector various sizes that included magnets to fix and adjust the two ends and nicely poison behind a product or to the side. Think I got these products about 1992.
Your ideas for diffusion are excellent. If it works it is good, that is all that matters.
Hey Dustin, yet again another great example of your innovation demonstrating how to achieve great results from a bit of intuition. Thanks for sharing.
Hey there, thank you! It's a labour of love
Hi Dustin, I've become a fan of yours. Your every video gives valuable ideas for creating great pictures with the help of such less expensive things.
Awesome, thank you!
simple and very effective. Great stuff.
Rob Crutcher Cheers
I love your work and how understandable you make everything, thanks! and keep the amazing work!
You're very welcome!
Great DIY
Thx!
Outstanding again DD, the use of the "C" shaped suport to get that soft edge is inspiring. Thank you so much.
I would love to see you shoot a high end chef knife. A nice Seki blade from Japan or similar.
Cheers Greg! I would love to do a knife episode
Hardware stores carry plastic tubing and 90 degree corner pieces. Easy to cut and create a frame. Savage and Lee Filter material can be mounted on the frame. One photographer I know created a wooden frame and same diffusion materials.
You are really showing how one get amazing results with out using some expensive equipment
Cheers! It amazed me as I got into product photography, how much of this stuff just comes down to understanding the concepts without expensive gear
I bought some speed lights finally! Haven't even tried product shots but totally love your channel. Gotta rewatch all your videos now ;)
Sounds great! Please enjoy :D
As everytime: Nice Video & great DIY!
Thank you my friend!
This is very interesting. I am a car photographer, and this is what I have been looking for. You can apply this same technique since cars are essentially the same surface. Thanks!
I too use Savage Translum (medium-weight) and it's outstanding!
It is really a great thing to pick up, I love it! Cheers John
Cheers! Just watched this old video, funny thing is, I made my own diffusers earlier today. Using 1 by 2 inch planks cut at a 45° angle. Then attached into a square using a nail gun, finishing the thing up with a $2 shower curtain from Ikea. Worked great, and I managed to shoot a pretty nice picture.
That is amazing Fredrik! Please subscribe and stay tuned.
Man really love your vids, so clear and professional! thanks for this, greetings from the Netherlands
Cheers man, it's always been my pleasure. So glad you watch.
always you'll be above the 100k in sub in no time, workplho is an hidden gem on youtube
Inspirational, thanks! 🎉
THANK U!!!!!!!!!
Great
Your videos are awesome Dustin! I’m just getting into product photography as a hobby and I can safely say your channel is the most intuitive and helpful. Your photoshop editing in other videos is swift & informative! Also lol to the bag of chips comment 😂 keep up the great work buddy!
(Fan from the UK!)
Haha thank-you very much Omar! All the best buddy
Saw the bottle from the exchange in the thumbnail and had to watch! Awesome video man.
Great! Thanks
My pleasure. Gustavo!
glad to know you are from Ontario! cheers, from London #519!
A beautiful video
Thanks!
I just made my first diffuser yesterday (before finding this video). I stapled a medium rectangular white cloth to a thin picture framing backing and voila! But I've also seen white shower curtains used nicely too.
Yes! Shower curtains and baking sheets are alt items for sure
Great way to shape the lights. Love those clean and seamless lights in all your shots. I would love to see a review on the light modifiers you use. If you dont mind, can you share what would be the ideal softbox or stripbox setup for product photography. What size softbox do you find best fit for products? I am getting two Godox AD 200 Flash heads for product shoots.
wow GREAT TIMING!!! i need to shoot some product photography of a speaker and have found your channel just a few days ago. Today i was wondering how to create my own diffuser and lo and behold..you release a video on it!!!
Haha unreal! So happy that happened it's magical
Awesome as always ! I did share on the facebook group a bottle shot I did with a DIY softbox some time ago - was generally well received. What I'd recommend, if people can't afford the translum stuff or are on a budget, they can use fabric. I went to the fabric store and asked for the kind used to make inside of clothes and skirts, it diffused really, really well. Use a couple of layers of the stuff and that's it. I don't remember the fabric's name - as if it would help, since I live in another country with another language - but ask specifically for the kind used in skirts interiors and you'll be set.
Yes Bruno! Thank-you so much. The fabric store is a wonderful place, you can also grab a black remanent piece of fabric for 1 or 2 dollars that will make a great catalog-black back drop. All the best, buddy!
bruno rbs there are tons of affordable diffusion materials.
Mine diy diffuser is made out of shower curtain.
another usefull video , as always :)
Great Ibrahim, glad it found you!
As a 20yr veteran of product photography, I can tell you that customers want their glossy products to reflect in a glossy way and not matte. This works of course for matte products.
Hey, thanks for tuning in. I agree, though I think despite having a matte quality, gradients are useful on glossy products as long as you show the sharp edge of the gradient, which couldn't be reproduced on a matte bottle..
Royal City always has some neat bottles to photograph. Problem is I drink them before they make it to the shoot. Keep up the great work nearby Southern Ontarian.
Haha drinking your bottles before they are shot is indeed a universal problem. Cool to hear your from my neck of the woods, have a great week and thanks for watchin!
The gradient makes the bottle look matte/frosted. You need a sharp cut-off line to maintain the gloss appearance. Try putting your strip box slightly behind and to the right of the subject at a 45* angle to the scrim (open to the subject) with the edge farthest from the subject actually touching the scrim. Then, sit back and watch the magic. ;-)
Hi John, yes at 0:25 I am referring to the hard edge of the gradient (-: Our previous video shows a similar bottle gradient using a foldable nylon diffuser. Have a great week!
thx I m gonna make one for me
@workphlo love your channel! Would love to see some clothing photography!
Thanks Justin, thats a great episode idea and I would love make that in the near future, stay tuned.
You should try shooting ski goggles and see if you can make the lens gradient without any reflections! I think thats a bit of a challenge! I'd like to see you try it! :D
Very cool
I've been trying to recreate this gradient look with my own bottle/beer photography, and I'm struggling to get it to look right. Are there any additional resources you would recommend? I've been using a strip box and a diffuser, but am struggling to get results that look as good as the photos in this video.
Interesting.
Wow thanks Chris Mayer!
really digging the videos Workflo, super heldful and easy to follow, only question is what program are you using for your edits? just curious?
I like the Rachael Ray comparison by the way. :D
Ah yeah watched a lot of Rachael
Nice video
Appreciated, thanks!
Great videos! Any chance you could photograph something not round? I'd love to get some inspiration for that! Keep up the good work!
I love that suggestion, absolutely! Have a good day
Toys maybe, like LEGO! :P
Hi. where did you get your savage Translum paper at? as well as how many stops is it? thank you
can you provide links for Canada please ;)
Could you show us how to do museum style photography, like where the background has a nice graduation from white to black?
That sounds magical! But I'm not 100% sure what you mean here, could you elaborate?
thanks for the reply :) I don't know how to describe it any better and I can't link to it in this comment, but if you google "philadelphia museum of art joseon bottle" there are a number of pictures which have a lovely background which I cannot work out how to do... do you know how it was done?
Where do you get tracing paper that large? I had to get rip stop nylon from fabric land and it doesn't let as much light through as is like since I'm working with constant light for now
This is actually "Savage Translum - Medium Weight" which is a diffusion material made by the background company Savage
Hi! How would this savage translum compare to a Full white diffusion?
I have only tried HEAVY translum which is quite frosty - but I think pure white would eat up a lot of light and almost become more of a reflector
"That will keep you chips fresh for like two years minimum" my favourite part:D
Amazing chip clips when the studio is not in session!
Any tips on shooting stainless steel trashcans with strobes. I'm having a hard time getting good contrast and proper reflections.. I don't want have to do it in photoshop.
That's a tough question, consult our Facebook group people will flock to help you!
Great work. For me, I am not sure why the bottle looks to me matte with this lighting setup. Though I tried hard convincing my eyes it is glossy.
Hey Anas! Yes the gradient gives a matte quality, it's the direct edge of the gradient which can only reflect sharply on a glossy bottle! (-: All the best
I thought that about the matte finish too - hard edge usually works well for gloss.
Thanks for the useful video though. I got a question - how is the accurate name of the diffuser cause I bought one before and it wasn’t the the one I wanted. If you go on official site of Savage you are going to see that they are placed in category “BackDrops”, there is no “Savage Translum plastic” diffiser. So which one I should order? Thank you
Hey there! Just google "Savage Translum" and you should find it in specialty backdrops: savageuniversal.com/products/specialty-backdrops/translum-backdrop/
workphlo Yeah, I’ve ordered at B&H few days ago - the same. I’ve paid import taxes to them as well but UPS required to pay again for the same. I called them and they finally lost the package😀😀😀Now I’m gonna oder from the Savage Original page. I wasn’t lucky at all with this...
I love your videos Dustin, I've learned a lot! I do propose a question though. A lot of people tend to turn off the IBIS / steadyshot in the camera settings when using a tripod (at least for landscapes) due to the IBIS interfering with the steadiness of the tripod (I've never really tested this, just going off from what I've heard / read). Is this true for product photography as well?
Hey Michael! I too have heard this, and usually leave any steadying mechanism turned off while I'm locked down to the tripod. I haven't personally seen any negative effect while leaving it "on" though! Cheers
Thank you!
Michael Nano Cheers!
The bottle doesn't look like glass though. It has a Matt finish. Usually glass has a hard edge.
I hear you, I could have done a better job of the main highlight, by putting it close to the edge I gave a matte illusion, looking back I would like to emphasize the direct-reflection from the gradient on the right hand side. If you zoom in it cuts off in a hard glossy manner but is lost here overall.
@@workphlo doesn't take away that you are a terrific photographer!
@@TheMrRatzz you are too nice! cheers, stay tuned for a great advertising photography tutorial Monday!
Hey Dustin, haven't seen a video from you in a while! Hope this finds you well. These are trying times. I think you mentioned being based in south Ontario. I was in Oshawa for 2 years. Lovely town, fond memories. Which city are you in? Just wondering how small the world is. And it goes without saying that I love your tutorials. They're so simple!
Regards from India. Keep safe!
Guelph! Cheers thanks so much for taking the time to write.
Yeah definitely make more ctaft beer shots. After 600+ photos i am runing out of ideas
Amen to that!
So, how does it taste? I prefer malt liquor myself. Next, maybe you could do a OLDE ENGLISH, COLT 45 or MICKEYS. But you gotta do it all gangsta like. Yah feel me.
SuperLumberjock It was a light Belgian style beer and was great. I too enjoy the odd Ol English
The video looks really beautiful along with the product lighting scenario but I kinda wish I could see the finished diffuser before you started using it so I can understand what you did to get the gradient... With the darker lighting of the demo it's hard to see how you're using it.
I agree, in our latest video and whisky video you may see our gradient approach more clearly
What is this diffusion material ? Is there any name so I can find it on store ? Please please
Savage Translum ;)
My Challenge: Look out for a Bottle of Ron Zacapa XO (the new one) & shoot this. (Maybe an empty one & fill it with something that looks like rum)
There are, also on Google, only shots, where you can see the softboxes(!) in the bottle's refelction.
Great challenge, thank you Alexander!
Can you shoot a deck of cards?
Sure thing! I have a tutorial planned for that actually
what about shooting a Terrarium plant with transparent glass? if you can make a tutorial ...... Thank you
That's a wonderful episode idea, I will photograph that and get back to you!
workphlo Thank you so much really appreciate it 🙏
no way Cheers!
No entiendo a las 5 personas que no les gustó esto. O si lo entiendo. Eso es falta de buen gusto
Thanks for sharing! I'm in video, and it's distracting when the camera is constantly trying to "find" the focus. Set your focus and forget it...or have some cuts. Just a tip.
Thanks Peter, I agree and appreciate the feedback greatly. Cheers!
man you deserve more exposure and recognition .. i really benefit alot from your videos . i either made an income with your tips :) thanks .
That fills me with joy, congrats! Have a great day
workphlo thank you again, i got this contract with Amazon in my country after some work i made for local shops. I already had my work going before it, but your workfkow helped me organizing everything in a professional way and to get the same results every time in different locations.
That''s amazing! Good job getting the work, so glad we could assist. Make sure to catch our next episode released today (-:
good tutorial! audio levels dropped off pretty hard as soon as you started the build though.
Thanks
Hey, man! Great video, thank a lot :-) But could you speak not so fast? :-) I'm sure, there are many people for whom English is not their native language, so sometimes it is difficult to understand you. Thanks again! :-)
Hey there, absolutely. Sometimes I get too excited and get speedy
Great idea for what you are promoting, but your audio keeps fading in and out. please look into improving that
Working on it! Cheers. Let me know if my new videos are improved.
