great little spot there, imo this is actually not about cults, but the cult is more a metaphor for people deluded by the idea of love (pessimism incoming, but this series is pessimistic) the idea that a soul mate is guaranteed to you, like the characters say is actually deluded. There is no guarantee you will find your "soulmate" like the characters push. It's a cult of love, people who dedicate themselves fiercely to the idea of love and soulmates and put full FAITH in it, can actually be cult like, which is why they chose to include the cult. Essentially the idea of not finding love can be a seriously hard pill to swallow, so general attitudes in society border on deluded, the story of michael in the cave and the denial of the fact he didnt actually find his soulmate emphasises this.
The line that sticks with me the most is “and you will never be alone” because it reminds me about how cults will manipulate people who are sad and feel alone into feeling like they are in a place where they are loved and never alone, despite cults not usually fulfilling that promise. This song is not about love. It’s about how people use love as an emotional weapon.
I also want to add that this is my favorite episode of DHMIS because of the small details and red flags in every line of dialogue. Not to go all MatPat, but I feel like that's a pretty accurate representation of how most cults will actually try their hardest to _hide_ the fact that they're a cult, at least until they believe they've got you caught hook-line-and-sinker. Very, VERY few people actually go out looking to join a cult on purpose, the vast majority don't realize they're in the process of joining one until much later. So yeah, the whole episode being about love and acceptance and then suddenly changing gears to "oh, and you also gotta worship this dude" seems pretty spot-on. From the accounts I've read from ex-cult members, the realization that they're in a cult was often just as sudden and jarring for them.
The way this kinda shows an example of how cults approach someone, they present themselves as someone nice, as someone who understands what someone is going through. Thats what i love about this episode.

I like this part, "I'm hungry" "No, you're lonely" The yellow guy is genuinely just hungry, but the caterpillar disregards that and tells him how he's supposedly actually feeling to help further assimilate the yellow guy into the cult. The caterpillar is creating a problem for the yellow guy as a means for control. I know I'm pointing out the obvious here, I just thought this episode was neat. I haven't finished the series yet though, so maybe it's foreshadowing or something instead. Either way it's a nice subtle commentary on cults. It was also funny in an absurd way.
Then in episode 5 he’s asked “are you hungry” & he says no.. he probably just thinks he’s lonely, I mean he hasn’t eaten all day, of course he’s hungry!

So in short they are lying to David to keep him from leaving the kingdom of love, but it all comes crashing down on the cult as David wakes up from his daytime nightmare and unlearns the lies taught to him by the teachers
The gravel could also just be a stand-in for money. People who end up starting a cult often do so purely for personal gain rather than out of genuine religious conviction, though I'm sure there's some overlap as well. The fact that Malcolm gets angry if he doesn't get his gravel could also be pointing to this. You'll find plenty of real-world examples of cults where the leader demands that their followers pay them tithes or fees or even surrender all their worldly possession altogether for the cult leader's benefit. And if that's all their cult is to them - a money-making scheme - it would make sense that they'd be pissed if the cashflow ever stopped.

This whole series is brilliant; not only does it criticise children's television and how people use it to drill certain values into kids' heads, but the whole universe is incredibly well thought out and full of convoluted and interconnected plot points. Plus the execution of the whole thing is just incredible. Great work you guys!

This really shows how cults create this kind of facade to manipulate and groom people. This is really well portrayed here as the ‘yellow guy’ is groomed into thinking it’s all love and care but he’s being changed and molded to peoples wants. The fluffy dog is being by him and all he can say is “harder”. This really shows how innocent people are to the real world and how easy it is to be manipulated by people who you think care but just want to use you.
Not only that but, rapist and molester usually approach those people/kids who are emotionally more unstable. They won't go for the confident people cause they will either beat the crap out of them or tell their parents It's freaking sad.

This whole series is brilliant; not only does it criticise children's television and how people use it to drill certain values into kids' heads, but the whole universe is incredibly well thought out and full of convoluted and interconnected plot points. This really shows how cults create this kind of facade to manipulate and groom people. This is really well portrayed here as the ‘yellow guy’ is groomed into thinking it’s all love and care but he’s being changed and molded to peoples wants. The fluffy dog is being by him and all he can say is “harder”. This really shows how innocent people are to the real world and how easy it is to be manipulated by people who you think care but just want to use you.
Not only that but, rapist and molester usually approach those people/kids who are emotionally more unstable. They won't go for the confident people cause they will either beat the crap out of them or tell their parents It's freaking sad.
