      Hard to see more of the original video when you break in to talk every other chord, and then cut out portions of the performance when you go back to it. I had to LOL at the title though... "Tutor critiques Eddie Van Halen". Not many people believe they have the skill to "critique" the Legend....especially since these are all techniques Eddie came up with.

      In hindsight, totally think this happened at the bit with the delay and chords, but like you say with the way he reacts, who is to say either way!

    His rhythm playing is highly underrated; no one before or since has that swing feel. The most magical thing to me, though, is how friggin clean his picking is. Zero pick noise.

      Dude had a great internal metre for sure! I only found out recently, apparently he had the amp really cranked; so you don't have to pick too heavily, that might be contributing to the lack of pick noise?

    It was always a joy to see VH. My first time was in 79. I was already hooked on their album, and seeing them in concert was A BLAST. Being a HUGE fan, I went to see them many times. It was really cool to see his Solos progress. He is , was, one of a kind. He was my teenage crush. and adult. lol. I felt like I lost a friend from highschool. Broke my heart when he passed.

    You could never be a teacher or suggest playing a different way to EVH. He was the the guitar teacher of teachers.

      @@JbfMusicGuitar Thats not the most impressive thing. Many people combine parts of the guitar to achieve something, but he was playing his own scales, looked at the music from outside the box.

    When EVH hit the highest note on the guitar, then hit a note a little bit higher that you were trying to figure out. If you use a screw driver to raise your pickup a little, you can put the string against the metal part in the middle of it (If your bridge pickup is a single-coil with the metal part in the middle). Most guitars will be setup with the pickups flush with the body but I think he raised his up a little

      People thought you were saying bad things about him lol it's critique not "criticize". Critique literally means detailed analysis or simple, analyzing the situations to understand more about what's happening :v I don't see any wrong :$

      I think it's the word 'critique.' If he had used 'examined' I don't think anyone would have a negative assumption.

      @@Briansgate Yeah, wasn't sure what to go with, it's not really deep enough for 'analysis' more than a reaction, critique means an informal analysis. But I think people correlate it with criticise, I can't do much about that though!

    11:20 Right there where Ed drops the the low E down with the wang bar and hits that low B note which matches the chord he just played is my personal favorite moment in this entire solo

    I'm just randomly stumbling in here to your vid as an old man now...I was 13 when Van Halen 1 album came out. It really was sitting around trying out different sh*t on the guitar like "HOW-IN-THEE-F* is he doing THAT!?! *#%*!!!!" for a few years until he started opening up about his techniques in guitar player mag, and I eventually could do some of his stuff (the volume swell/chorus/delay thing I never mastered on Cathedral like in this vid) ...You did good with this vid...your tempting an old man to pick it up again...good job sir!...I think...

      I wouldn't stand a chance without being able to see it... I can't imagine how mind blowing it would be to hear it from a Hi-Fi!

    Good commentary,but too much of it. I understand you want express your opinions and viewpoints,and due to RUclips's rules and such but you keep stopping the video too much.

      Fair enough! It's a tough balance to make. When I was editing the first batch of these, it just seemed pointless me sitting there watching it, so made a an effort to chime in more. Still a work in progress, lol

    You mentioned Tom Morello. I used to pick the strings up above the neck, and slide my palm against the strings like a rapper scratching an album.
    I always got told to stop doing stupid stuff and play right. Then Tom Morello comes along.........
    Lesson to be learned: Experiment with Everything! Don't let other people tell you how you should or shouldn't play.

    What Eddie started out with here is a piece he wrote called 316, which came out about 10 years or so after Eruption.

      @@JbfMusicGuitar yes it is. Eddie is one of my favorite guitarists. Along with Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen and Buck Dharma. Malmsteen is, I think, a better technical player than Eddie, but he doesn't have Eddies' verve, his ability to really charm an audience.

      @@buisyman I'm a huge fan of Vai and Malmsteen's play, but Eddie is up there with Hendrix for me in terms of creativity and how much he progressed guitar playing in general

      @@JbfMusicGuitar Ah, Hendrix. You got me started. That man never had a guitar lesson until his later years. Taught himself how to play. He's left handed, so he flipped the guitar over and taught himself. He did shit on the guitar that no one else ever had because he never had anyone saying to him "That's impossible".

      Cheers Roy! I'm sure he did, I've got a feeling I found a video where a guitar manufacturer who has sent guitars to Eddie explained what he did (found it! ruclips.net/video/LBnOkKBvZ6c/видео.html)
      I think he might have had other tricks as well, taking a bit of time to match the springs and strings and whatnot. But I'm just guessing now!

    12:30 hammering the notes to get the needed volume while adjusting the volume up/down is easy in theory, but to mirror the sound is another thing.

      Good question Lars! It sounds like an A minor, E minor, C5, B5 - so I'd say he's maybe using B Phrygian? The delay and effects to really make it sound like a synth, great observation!

      Noted! It's tricky to gauge how often to pause these, at the moment I'm experimenting with a straight reaction watch through, followed by a separate analysis/lesson video. Which is probably a better system!

    Live probably Eddie's greatest piece of work...I often refer folks to this LWAN solo (and 5150 from this recording) as his best; just pure and peak form here.

      He slopped a few notes during the symmetrical scale bits; it's live that's gonna happen. Other than that I really can't r fault it, arguably a 'peak Van Halen' performance here.

    Great reaction 👏. Although I think you stopped way too much, and I know you have to buy that was a lot. As far as Eddie goes. I have mad respect for Jimmy and Stevie. Jimmy was great but sadly gone too soon. Stevie was probably the greatest blue's rock guitarist. But Eddie was the greatest Rock and Roll guitar player that's ever lived. RIP Eddie.

      Oh yeah, that's totally fair! Always a bit of a tricky balance to strike. Eddie and Hendrix are, to me, the most important electric guitar pioneers so much stuff has been influenced by them it's unreal

    What he starts with is called 316.....which he wrote for his son. 316 is Wolfgang VH’s birthday.
    It can be found on 1991’s “For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge”.
    There’s absolutely no continuity in your video, because your comments are much too frequent.

      Yeah, still trying to find a good balanced with these videos, have only done a handful. I'm trying to make them informative instead of just sort of blankly starting at the screen; so at the end of it you might hopefully come away with something. The original is up on RUclips, so I figured folk can just watch that if they want the full experience?
      Like I say, still a work in progress and with a player like Eddie... I mean he's dropping tricks and technique every other beat, so it's like what do you miss out, lol!

    Hey, i might be very late to the video, but would it be possible to say something about the chords at 10:02 and 11:03 ? like is it called anything special? i just like how they feel very discomfortable, great video btw

      It's very haunting isn't it?
      There are a few cool things going on: he's used a scale called 'Phrygian', which has a slightly Spanish sort of sound.
      On top of that he is using a lot of delay and reverb effects, so his guitar sounds like a synthesiser or almost otherworldly & very ambient!

      @@JbfMusicGuitar Yes Eddie did it too. They both did it around the same time, and there was a difference between the way they did it. Eddie used his guitar pick ups to amplify the sound that the drill made, while Paul used the drill to play notes really fast with it.

    It's a critique video where the first statement is basically there can be no critique this time, just a reaction considering the guitarist involved.
    Eddie was never a Guitar Hero, he was a straight up Guitar GOD. Full on 6 string deity.

      The original is easy to find on here, so I don't see much value in me just sitting and watching it. I get that's a popular style of video, just not my cup of tea! 🤘

    This dude does not get Eddie Van Halen. All he talks about is how it would be easier. Eddie made his own sounds with NO PEDALS or other cheap gimmickry. He became one with his guitar and amp, and innovated like no other, and YOU benefit from his genius.

    I know I'm a few years late, but dude, you missed 25% of the solo. every time you paused it, you jumped ahead as much as 10-20 seconds. Your analysis is spot on, but for gods sake, show the entire video. I've seen this enough times to know you missed some key sections. There was a huge jump of him running across the stage where he goes into the semi-finale riff. Just... Dude... NEVER INTERRUPT A GUITAR SOLO.

      Yep, gonna happen with an analysis/critique video! I've started putting a disclaimer at the start to say that I pause and talk about stuff instead of sitting and doing nothing, which seems to have helped let folk know what the score is!

      Fair enough! This approach has been my main method of self learning for years; watching the greats and working out some of their tricks, licks, ideas and habits. I'd be seriously worse as a player and musician, if it wasn't for this sort of process

      @@eduardogarelli7740 No gigs atm because of lockdown, sadly! Mainland Europe, festivals and 800-1000 cap. venues are probably the biggest things I've done- not a patch on huge stadiums and world tours like these guys did!
      I dunno man, the idea that you can't learn from things by reviewing them doesn't sit well with me. That's pretty much been my approach to guitar- look at what the greats have done, deconstruct it, learn from it.
      Is there anything I said that you disagreed with? Thought I was pretty fair in this one?

      Edward Van Halen is a semi-God, but he was human too.
      In this video he´s drunk and maybe other things.... some mistakes in his solo, are "natural"..... is Eddie, you know.

    OMG, I tried to watch this video and it was stopped at least 64 times. I randomly clicked on the time deal and every 30 seconds are WAY more, you wouldn't let the audience listen and get it. I appreciate you taking the time to do your reaction video but for the love the God, let him play and just save the comments for every once in a while. Not every 10 seconds. Just constructive criticism. Thats all.

      This approach isn't for everyone! I'd rather get commentary than watch some one watching a video, adding very little and doing that over the top exaggerated reaction thing. But a lot of people like that. There are a tonne of videos like that, so I figure why not cater for a different group. Tomateo Tomato and all that!
