    All great advice. I think it was Abe Laboriel that said the bass must be the house everyone else takes shelter in. This responsibility to be right and confident in that note is paramount.

    Really cool advice! For me, a lot of it boils down to balance/yin and Yang. Mature musicians I play with understand instinctively that to make something stick out, it has to be unique. Like the lick can hit way harder if you don’t play it every time in the chorus. The lead can feel way better if the rhythm section is keeping it tight and simple. It’s easy to get excited and play all the licks and fills, but less is more, and a little restraint/attention can go a long way

    Oh my word I love you! This is the video I've been needing to send to our musicians! Not just for bass, but this is definitely a video for any (even learning) musicians to understand how to play and improve as a band together.

    This is such a good video. So many times I've asked myself, when is someone gonna make a video about these tips. Some of these tips I knew and I practice. But some of these I didn't know. Especially about the pedals.

    I really love this info. I currently play at church; there are never any rehearsals, and they "refuse" to announce what songs are being done. I guess that they feel that I should already be familiar with the 30 or so songs that they perform regularly. It does get frustrating, but I just take it all as learning.
    It is tough to play with confidence without an accurate playlist. Thanks.

      I play at church but luckily we have a practice night and we also practice Sunday morning as well. I practice the songs some on my own as well by playing along with it. That's a shame you don't know what songs you'll be playing.

      @kevinthomas728 Год назад +1

      @@beatrocka5 Dude, I definitely hope it gets better for you. Usually as the worship team grows, things get more organized. If you’re in a place where it’s spiritual abuse, I would consider leaving. Im sure you’re doing a great job though 👍

    • @dantizol159
      @dantizol159 Год назад +2

      Maaan been there and done that before. Your learning a good skillset of a clutch player however being in those environments as the norm can corrupt your playing. Most time you will end of chasing the organist or keyboard player often playing their put together version vs the actual song. I use a technique where I review what played then listen to the correct version to fix it. Since most of these smaller churchs dont rehearse, they normally rotate 10 to 15 songs so when it comes back you can push the right note. True musicians will hear the right note and jump on but there will always be those keyboard and organ players who wont...Good luck and keep doing the right things so you not limited when you go elsewhere..

    A collorary to your point about waiting to add fills is to establish the basic rhythmic groove of a tune as early as possible- especially with the drummer. That gives you a nice platform to embellish off of as the song progresses. That also establishes things nicely for the listener.

    Great Advice! Just one thing you did not mention..ALWAYS have your instrument in top condition and setup! Even if it is a 50 dollar gig.. you never know who is listening.. i have received major gigs at events that paid little, because someone saw, /heard me at the gig, and were impressed.Fresh strings, proper setup, good amp, and of course the rest of the points that you talked about. Greetings from Munich , Germany!
