Nobody likes you
Everyone left you
They're all out without you
Having fun
Where have all of the bastards gone?
The underbelly stacks up ten high
The dummy failed the crash test
Collecting unemployment checks
Like a flunkie along for the ride
Where have all the riots gone
As your city's motto gets pulverized?
What's in love is now in dept
On your birth certificate
So strike the fucking match to light this fuse
The town bishop is an extortionist
And he don't even know that you exist
Standing still when it's do or die
You'd better run for your fucking life
It's not over 'till you're underground
It's not over before it's too late
The city's burning
It's not my burden
It's not over before it's too late
There is nothing left to analyze
Where will all the martyrs go
When the virus cures itself?
And where will we all go
When it's too late?
Shit
And don't look back
You're not the Jesus of Suburbia
The St. Jimmy is a figment of
Your father's rage, and your mother's love
Made me the Idiot America
It's not over 'till you're underground
It's not over before it's too late
The city's burning
It's not my burden
It's not over before it's too late
She said I can't take this place
I'm leaving it behind
Well, she said I can't take this town
I'm leaving you tonight

One of the most underrated Green Day songs. Period.
Chrysalis well im gonna have to agree with you on this one
100% not underrated
whoops wrong video, nvm
the shortest distance between two points is:
Never my fave at first but now rocks my crazy brain, hot body, pretty soul. Just wish real video, never get enough of BJ
Not only is this one of the most intense songs in the album, it's also one of the most important from a storytelling standpoint. This is the song where Jesus realizes that he has become the very same American Idiot that he once sought to never become in the first song. And it took him breaking up with the girl of his dreams to realize that. It's the first big climax of the album and it really hits hard.
I knew it was about Jesus breaking up with what' her name. But I never thought about Jesus turning into the American idiot. That's a really good way to describe the song
in the musical that they wrote, its whatshername breaking up with Jesus.
The "Jesus" your refering to, His name is Jimmy hence St.Jimmy
Braydon s Jimmy is Jesus's anarchist alter ego that he made up in his mind to cope with his shortcomings. Jesus is the "real" guy.
Yeah, in the show that they wrote its Johnny and he creates Jimmy as an alter ego to be what he kind of wishes what he wanted to be.
The thing I hate about this song is that it has an end.
Robbie Green the end is dope tho
true.
Robbie Green then listen to your long version
Robbie Green same dude
4:06 is a low point tho
I love how the intensity of this song never drops. It's full pelt rock from start to finish.
Idk, it kinda dropped like a rock at 4:05 :(
most songs from this album are like that. american idiot is amazing
3:14 Im in love with that part omg
Martion Camprubi same
Same
Me too
same
It gives The most nostalgic feeling i swear
The voice of a generation
Searching for a awesome new band? You are in the right spot!
*watch?v=el3cHidIiAU*
Absolutely Love these guys!
RUclips the link and have fun!
+beta0blaster explain pls? Not a murican and really wnat to understand the song
MrMcArmenio Generation X kids were maturing at this point, and they had been pissed off at what was happening in the US. The Iraq war showed no signs of letting up, the 2004 US presidential election was about to go down (George W. Bush ended up winning again), and Americans were generally just divided and and pissed off at the money-grabbing, soul-eating world that they had inherited from their parents. I think they wanted a way out.
I'm Canadian, but many of the same things were happening here.
beta0blaster Thx m8. This album is such a masterpiece
***** wat the fuck man, Ian Watkins put his dick in an infant. That in no way is representative of an entire generation
This whole album is great. I love pretty much every song of it.
Same
Same especially we are the waiting
exactly!😄😄😄
Yeah i agree with can't fault a song on this album
fuck are we the waiting lol they played it at Wrigley and it killed the mood lol
extremely frustrating that this song isnt available on spotify by itself, only together with extraordinary girl, which is also great, but sometimes i only want to listen to one of them.
Because it's how you suposed to hear It.
IIRC, the iTunes version has them separate.
Suffer
@@emfraridades7261 when you want to see your favorite scene from a movie do you rewatch the entire movie every time because that's how you were supposed to see it?
Extraordinary Girl is good, but not up to par with the rest of the album.
I love when he start to sing the part " And She Said..." is like A lot of memories comes to my mind,Not just for the lyrics, but the instrumental, the energy,it's all pretty awesome
Banda Flat it’s amazing I wish it was longer
Mood, I think it's because of the chord progression, there's 3 steps here : first chord is "She said I" then second, higher chord "can't take this place", and then the final one, a lower one, the conclusion "I'm leaving it behind". Three ideas, that put together with the music gives away the feeling of the character telling a story about how he had taken the decision, and contemplating the past
totally agree,,from indonesian....😂😂
@@thenewlifeofme I was gonna say this, but it’s awesome some else said it already.. I mean… wrote it, lol
Me too...
The St. Jimmy is a figment of, your father's rage and your mother's love. Great line!
This is in my opinion, the best song on this album. Jesus of Suburbia is a very close second. I discovered this album as a kid and now im 28 and its still just as raw to me emotionally
2 years late, but Homecoming is great too
Shit makes me cry
It's Jesus of Suburbia, Letterbomb and Homecoming for a shared first place imo. Masterpieces
This captured green days intense energy. Whatsername encapsulated their raw emotion.
Whatsername too
I love his screams at 2:19 I wish he would've done more
Jordan Adams it's because he only uses it for the most climactic moments like when he did it in "she". Although I also want more upon hearing it, I now realize that when it actually happens, it's so impactful that it just reverberates in my head indefinitely. It probably would have been forgettable if he just used it all over the place
And he does a small one in Hitchin' A Ride
Know your enemy, Horshoes and handgrenades
@@marci6412 how could i forget those and Private Ale?!
And Nightlife
My favourite Green Day song. I am a massive fan by the way. This is so underrated I dont understand why it isnt more popular.
Exactly! Letterbomb is my favorite out of the whole album!
You're not the Jesus of Suburbia
The St. Jimmy is a figment of
Your father's rage, and your mother's love
Made me the Idiot America
i love the connection to the other songs in the musical/album
The whole album is actually 1 story of a teenage boy
It's called a "concept album". It was way more common during the 70s, in general associated to progressive rock.
@@victormanoeldebrito7629 Rock Opera even.
That's the point of the album. It's a certain style of album, I just don't remember what it's called
Fuck I love this song
What I needed right now, if you're reading this, your not alone, someone feels like you do, you're not alone
☺☺
What I like so much about the album American Idiot is the fact that its for the outcasts, and the people who are "different" the people who society doesn't accept. And it kind of makes us all not feel so alone
True
no I still feel alone.
@@nerdy_.rockstar8254 me too
Well thats the punk movement on its core. Unfortunately the movement became so fucking elitist, well, the whole rock comunitty became elitized, but bands like Green Day and Foo Fighters will always speak for the outsiders out there.
The entire album is a political statement on America and how its obsessed with media and not the working people
Just saw that an Alt Press article put this as the greatest Green Day song of all time and I must say, it’s a solid pick. Might not be the #1 song for sure, but definitely for contention. This song is legit a punk rock masterpiece.
year 2020: birds coming outta hibernation
"where have all the bastards gone?"
The best part of the song is entire song!
Nah, 4:05 kinda stinks to be honest.
haha i get the joke now
Lol.
that's improper english
Songs they knew would never make it on radio because they're shit.
This isn't going to be one of those comments with, "This music is so great & the new generation music sucks" or something like that. Green Day, to me & as many other millennials should understand, is that this album single-handedly describes an entire generation in less than an hour. Really boil this album down along with the mentality of today's teens and even the young adults. Most, if not truly all, have much more distrust and believe in way more skepticism among not just their peers, but their government. Then in 2004, a band of (at the time) 30ish year olds release an album that dives straight into the emotional being of people half their age. I spent a year going through psychiatric care due to a breakup from a two-year relationship & i have to say, Green Day not just helped me bare through, but let me know others feel this pain & essentially saved my life. So everyone, seriously, why do we argue over "who's music is better?'
mate stop talking shit. good album end of
Because, they think it's better and feel the need to Express there opinion. The only way to get them to not, is to take away there freedom of speech, and they already fear that. Honestly pick the song and I bet there is music that is just as good. Pick the wrong song and your over generalizing. Some musical artists of today helped me through some abuse from relatives.
But it was one of those comments lol. Every new generation thinks they're woke.
Y’all didn’t get his point 🌚🌝 plus we shouldn’t be discussing over who’s music is better, its for what it transmits you, it helped him get through a heartbreak but maybe for others “County” can help them get through family problems...
@@Ruby-xt7lm ew country sucks bro
Shit, showing my age but have loved green day since early 90s......... still love them, Billys dont give a Fu$k attitude helped me get through tough times when i was younger and they just kept getting better... Letterbomb hugely under rated song, Love and peace 2023.
American Idiot was the album that got me into Green Day, and this has to be one of my favourite songs from them! Love the intensity from start to finish!
Alguien escuchándola en 2020 por un libro hahah👑

This album changed completely my vision of music
1:41 I'm in love with that part
“Where have all the riots gone?” We found em mate
This city’s mottos been pulverized
The city's burning
its not my burden
You better run for your effing life
Pengu lmao I saw this out of context and thought it was a threat
"Where will all the martyrs go when the virus cures itself?" More relevant than ever.
i always thought this song to be the major climax/turning point of the albums story, 2:42 particularly
this album.... will one day be a classic. no doubt
+Matanumi what do you mean one day? it already is
+Sam Yogh that was the the joke
Ladies and gentlemen, roll up, roll up! See the mysterious ADJACENT TWO-THEs!
This album is the story of my life
+mrsuns10 rage and love the story of my life (?
the most underrated green day song. only long time green day fans know this classic
classic haha not hardly ... this was a 2004 release talk to me when u wanna discuss the real old School green day music from the albums .. Dookie nimrod etc.. lol

+Serclf s sad but true lol
+Serclf s What about 1039 Smoothed out slappy hours? Kerplunk?
+InsensitiveCrackbaby yeah boiy going to pasalaqua fav from 39/smooth
Such an underrated song! If you ask me, this is the best song on the album!
This song has always reminded me of "86" but kicked up a few notches.
fclefjeff I know this is a bit of an old comment but I was just listening to 86 and thought the chorus sounded familiar :)
God, the song just gets to another level after "And don;t look back".
Best song on the album.Period.
Srdjan Gojkovic no contest
It's close but it's gotta be Jesus of suburbia for me
Best part of the song 00:00/4:05
worst part 4:06
Despite the fact that I always forget this song exists, it is actually the song that comes to mind first when I think of Green Day.
Favorite American Idiot Song. God this takes me back. I'm 18 but now I'm 14 again.
+Clayton Reardon I'm 22 now and I'm 15 again
28, 16 again xD
53, 53 again.....
+Simon Greenslade best comment 😂
Clayton Reardon i cried
Every time I hear this song I'm 13 again, yet every year it means something a little different. A piece of art that stands the test of time
I played an acoustic arrangement of this song at an open mic night not too long ago. Such a fun song to play. 3:13 is always so hard to sing. I really got into it and I had to hold back the tears. Favorite part of the whole fucking album to be honest
Daniel Tallo ur gay
@@dominicgalasso8304 mood
I find it the easiest part of the song to sing
I suck at singing along for most of the song except ironically for that part, but that doesn't stop me anyway
SAME. I choke up and idk why.
Me at 16 years old: My favourite song on American Idiot.
Me now (32): Still love it!!
As someone who heard this song first at age 13 and will be 28 later this year, I feel you lol

This simply is the best green day song at least on the album
It’s the climax
This is 100% Green Day’s best song
I feel weird knowing I bought this album in 2004. Fuck, times flies.
Much weirder now mate
remains one of the best songs they've ever produced
Best. Fucking. Band. EVER!
100% Agree
I. Fucking. Agree. 100. Mutha. Fucking. Percent
one of the best green day songs of all time. I love it just as much now as the first time I heard it all those years ago
There is such a profoundly melancholic sound running through this whole album, and I especially feel it in this song.
One of my fav albums of all time
This is actually my favorite song on this entire album. :'D
I never liked the idea of getting a tattoo very much, but if I ever get one it will be "Where will all the martyrs go when the virus cures itself?". Probably the acme of the whole album. God this song is one of the best songs of the 21st century so far.
"Well she said I
Cant take this place
Im leaving it behind.
Well she said I
Cant take this town
Im leaving you tonight."
Best part
ive moved around a lot and this lyric always seems to resonate with me the loudest, really just is a perfect reminder for how it feels to be in a place you hate and finally get away, the sadness and happiness all blended together.
Seriously one of my all time favorite Green Day songs.
Regardless of whether you like punk or not. No matter if you don't like Green Day as a band. Regardless of if you think their newer music isn't as good. American Idiot is one of the best albums ever made. Its up there with Tommy, ZoSo, Master of Puppets, and Moving Pictures. It's proof that music can be timeless and meaningful. Some bands make an album where only one or two songs are fantastic and the rest are only good or okay. American Idiot is an entire album of amazing tracks.
why does everyone hate American Idiot it's an amazing album after all it's the album that got me into Green Day
Ikr. same with me. If American Idiot wasn't there, I wouldn't even be listening to Green Day. Know I like old school punk rock Green Day but American Idiot is where I first met Green Day.
i think "Wake me up when September ends" throws everybody off.
***** The line 'one nation controlled by the media' is very true though, atleast Billie knows it
I think the main reason was all of Bush's supporters were angry with Green Day especially Billie.
***** It's because everybody believes everything the media tells them. And it's (mostly, about 98%) true.
it's my all time fav gd song. i saw them play it live last year and i couldnt help but cry
Takes me back to when I was 14 im now 27.... Band of my generation from sweet children to the band they are now
His voice though 👌🏼
his voice is not as amazing as some singers but it fits perfectly for the punk genre
+E-LUKE-KAPULA
ommmmmmmmmmg god grEen D4y is not punk
+Mohammed Sabty if it's not punk, then, WHAT THE HELL IS IT?
Sienna rose M fucking pop trash #pistols444lyfe #nofxisrealpank
Mohammed Sabty ok, so I just learned I like trashy pop! I'm so happy!
I guess since Green Day is this trashy pop you talk of, so are, the Sex Pistols, Offspring, Rancid, and The Ramones
One of the best, most thought out, well performed songs to ever exist. Perfection wrapped up 4 minutes and 5 seconds.
The sheer power of the sound production, the lyrics and the energy of Billie J.'s delivery, this album might not remain legendary like some others but they sure invested some genuine creativity and soul in it. I love it
This song gives me goosebumps and mixed emotions.
In my opinion, the best song in the whole album.
One of my favorite albums. Plus this album has helped me through shit.
Thank you, Green Day
This track is Green Days finest hour on its finest album...legend
I'm still mad this isn't it's own stand-alone song on iTunes
joey celis it is now
WOW I was 3 years old when this album was made. Im 13 and I love this song and love green day also love that album. :P
Wow I'm 4 years older than you, and do I care.......not really.
Jared Reisma wow someone needs to learn how to be nice to people and I was just commenting you do know im aloud to comment what I like don't you so just piss off how about that
I was mad yesterday and felt like being an asshole so........sorry.
But I did get to go to the Bullet in a Bible concert when i was 8
Jared Reisma ok then and your lucky I wish I could go to one of thier concerts it must have been brilliant
Green day is honestly such a lovely band
This is the epitomy of what the new green day is, it has all the elements. Deep Lyrics, deep music and the green day edge.
American Idiot came out when I was 11-12.. I was obsessed with it. It brings back a lot of memories as I haven't listened to it for about 5 years.
why are so many green days songs underrated?
3:14 I feel those lyrics man, I always gotta sing them
This song is basically the anthem for 2020 right now.
@@GaslightingIsEvil You could argue it's referring to people in other countries than the US, as they contained the virus mostly, under a 2020 interpretation.
love this song so much
Wow it has been a long time since the first time i listened to this song. I was still a high school student. Those were great times where i could lay in bed while listening to my favourite music without any important worry.
Hope you too enjoy this piece. I recommebd to you '' whatsername''
Where will all the martyrs go
When the virus cures itself?
And where will we all go
When it's too late?
very relevant in our current corona context..
The whole entire song. Talks about wheres the riots for our rights and the people who fight, then in the song it happens, and he says the city is burning, smells like burning, but it's not his fault.
why the fuck wasn't this a single?!
Because it's a vital song in American Idiot, it's when Jimmy realizes hes the very same American Idiot he condemned and avoided
idk American idiot is a pretty great album
Lexi Laios this whole album could have been used as singles, it's just a masterpiece
green day names their albums off of their first track of that album and this song is track 07
Walter Chandler has nothing to do with the question at all.
i love this guys channel name
Why is this song not acknowledged as much as the others? Firstly, it's the turning point of the whole album, where she leaves him and things start going downhill. Secondly, it has THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT LINE in the whole album, 'You're not the Jesus of Suburbia, and St Jimmy is a figment of, your father's rage and your mother's love, made me the IDIOT AMERICA!!!' absolutely astounding. And finally, it is the best song on the album, sends shivers to my whole body and is just AMAZING.
This song is an absolute masterpiece. It's larger than life.
I listened to this music so much back in the days :D
Green day will always be special in my heart forever
Definitely in my top 5 favourite songs witch are all green day!!
i love you for this analysis :) i remember listening to the album for the first time and my mind blown, i think it was the first concept album i came across, it was amazing - not just random songs that the band made in the course of a given amount of time and then put together, but an actual story, characters, jesus, whatsername, st jimmy, amazing, simply amazing. haven't listened to this in so long, and now i find myself in the same awe as back then. i wish i could have that time back. love.
i used to listen to this song and a bunch of other songs from the american album every night while i lay in bed the ipod shuffle was pretty new and all i had on that little shuffle was green day and i would listen to it every night as i feel asleep i'd think of the future and what it'll be like so here i am now 10 years later listening to this song again...so much nostalgia i will always be a die hard green day fan rock on guys
A hell of a song, forever Green Day.
2020 and this is still one of my favorite albums
bro the lyrics are like so awesome and just everything about this song is just so good i love it so much
This is my favorite song by Green Day...then it’s !Viva La Gloria! & Homecoming.
UNDERRATED
this is easily their best song. by so many miles.
god this takes me back, after 11 years of being a fan (since i was 7) i finally get to see these live in 11 days!!
Powerfully sad & aggressive simultaneously with beautiful lyrics
These guys man.
By far the best green day ever.
2:20 love that part and love this song. Makes me feel emotional as fuck.
AND DOOOON'T LOOOOK BAAAAACK!
that second last melody is BEST THING EVER i swear im like rolling my eyes back to hear that.
