70’s Jazz Bass Comparison

- This time I made a comparison video on my four 70’s jazz basses with both finger and slap playing:
1. Sadowsky Metro UV70
2. Fender AVRI 75
3. Atelier Z Dal
4. Sire MM V5
DAW: CUBASE
Strings: DR FAT-BEAMS steel 40-100
For overall sounds, my ears adore that Atelier Z. It got punching mids. I like!
Thanks for watching and for your comment 🙏
Sire keeps up with all the big brothers
No doubt! Thanks for your comment 🙏
Yeah I think it has the most presence
Fender all day long wasn’t even close... However, I was very impressed with the Sire as to me that was the number 2 bass .
To me the sire wins it. 🏆
Thanks for watching and for your comment 🙏
Now I can see why Miller choosed the Sadowsky preamp
Thanks for watching. Infact, that’s Bartolini TCT preamp that Roger Sadowsky has installed in his Fender 77 jazz bass.
The Sire MM V5 sounds like a better Fender J, but most importantly, I love the selections you chose to play for comparison. They are both very indicative of practically everything you want to hear from a solid J bass. Kudos
Thanks for watching and for your comment 🙏
That Atelier is absolutely stunning.
@@WilDBeestMF I can’t agree more…thanks for your comment 🙏
That Sire has a vicious slap tone, they all had their own color however , I’ve heard every single one of those sounds a million times over but that. Sire maintained its fullness and yet displayed a different unique tone that was a bit different from the other’s
Well mentioned! Thanks for your comment 🙏
1 Sad
2 Sire
Our opinions are the same 😊 thanks for watching and commenting 🙏
Cost-effectiveness V5 WIN!
Slap: Sadowsky then Sire MM (Y)
Your taste is close to mine 😉
Great comparison!! The pickup balance/height may need to be checked between UV70 and the Fender. Fender seems to have more neck pickup blend. I am surprised how the Atelier sounds to be honest…the alder back can’t be the reason for sounding so NOT 70’s JB… Great Comparison!! I would like to see maybe more detailed UV70 vs Fender with comparable setup. I noticed on the UV70 that it likes more bass boost so sound good compared to my NYC 4 strings with 60s positions.
I checked the pickup heights on both Fender and Sadowsky. Both are almost as per the spec i.e. 3,2mm and 2,4mm. Please note that my Fender is a modified one converted to active with Lollar PUs and Bartoli preamp. So it may not be a valid reference for what you are looking for (Fender traditional 70’s which is passive). I might make another video comparing my Fender with my UV70 in the future. Let’s see….thanks for watching and for your comments 🙏🙏🙏
1) fender avri 75
2) sire v5
(both fingers and slap)
Thanks for your comment 🙏
I agree, Fender and Sire are my first and a close second choice. 4 great bases to compare. 👍
@@gazthejazz yes, the Fender has the most definited sound
@@gazthejazz thanks for watching and for your comment. 🙏
All great but I’ll take the atelier Z as the winner then fender , sadowsky on 3rd and sire last
Thanks for watching and for your comment 😊
I preferred the Sadowsky, but that Atelier Z looks cool as hell with the clear pickguard and control plate.
Thanks for your comment 🙏
I have put my Atelier Z on Reverb.com for sale please feel free to have a look or ask any question if you are interested😊
Is Sire passive???
Sire V5 is originally a passive bass but this one is modified with EMG pickups and electronics which are active. So now it’s an active bass. So in order to have a fair comparison, I played these 4 active basses in this video.
@@majidalizadeh9354 What model of EMG pick ups and preamp?
@@landman5294 EMG J set
I own Fender and Sire Jazz basses. Here- The Fender sounds better to me here, than the others. Bigger, more full, and punchy, too.
Thanks for watching and for your comment. Both Fender and Sire you see in this video have been modified. I like them too. Fender is modded with Lollar PUs and Bartolini XTCT preamp.
Did you listen to both finger and slap styles? Do you think that Fender wins in both styles?
@@majidalizadeh9354 I watched the entire video. I'm a Luthier/ Repairman, since about 1968. I just turned 72. I'm also a lefty bassist. I have many instruments, and seven custom self-designed basses. All from scratch. I have two V7's and they are almost totally stock. I have a P5, that is heavily modifid, and it sounds better and plays better than my friend and client's P-7. I've worked on everything you can imagine, from well before there were any aftermarket parts at all, and most of the Fender basses I worked on, were Pre-CBS.. I know a good sounding bass when I hear it. There, of course many variables- such as the mods you have done. The end result here, is all of your basses sound like they should. No issues at all, but I prefer the sound of your Fender over the others.
@@bigbass421Wow great that you have so much experience as a Luthier. That‘s the area I‘m interested in (to modify and repair bass guitars, I don’t have much experience though). My personal preference is my Sadowsky and then Fender and Sire V5. As I mentioned my Fender has a Bartolini XTCT but in the next step I will install a Bartolini TCT preamp (the exact same model that Marcus Miller has on his Fender 77) on my Fender and will make a video of that. Let’s see how much it makes difference 😊
Still love my 72 p bass
Finger - Atelier Z
SLAP - sadowsky
Thanks for your comment 🙏
The Sadowsky doesn't sound like a 70s Jazz Bass at all tho.
The steel strings I used might sound like this in your ears. Have you watched the other video of the Sadowsky with nickel strings on my channel? Does it sound not like 70’s jb in that one either? That’s interesting as the Sadowsky in my ears sounds like a 70’s jazz bass even better in comparison with the other three in this video.
Sandowsky sounds best fingerstlye, but for the slap, the Fender is best here imo
Sadowsky and Fender both are great basses. If you like the sound of Sadowsky you may also be interested in the other video on my channel where I have slap played my Sadowsky with nickel strings. It sounds awesome in my ears 😊
sado fingers and slap has my preference
@@arnaudontrack499 thanks for watching and for your comment 🙏🙏 your preference is close to mine 😊
Louder always tricks us that it sounds better.
The levels from these basses seem quite different.
Thr Sadowsky Does sound very nice though.
I Do wonder about a level 'playing field' in these comparisons though.
I bought a Sire V-7 quite early on, alder/rosewood, just to have a Jazz bass around the place and mine sounds Much livelier.
I like the 'legacy; tones from the old Fender types.
My 'daily driver' is a Modulus Q5, but it can do F type sounds when it needs to ...
Thanks for watching and commenting. The levels on the instruments as well as in the DAW are exactly the same. The level difference comes from the active electronics as well as the pickups.
Fender
👌 Thanks for your comment 🙏
Still think Fender Jazz is the best, though Sadowsky goes great on lower strings
@@piattinodisegreti no doubt that both are great instruments. I think Sadowsky sounds better with nickel strings on. You’re welcome to check out my other video from the Sadowsky with nickel strings. Thanks for watching and for your comment 🙏🙏
Fender better slap tone, more body! Sadowsky has a bit more sizzle, better finger tone! I like both! 😎👍
Thanks for watching and for your comment. I suggest you to watch (if you haven’t) the other video I made of Sadowsky slap tone on my channel but this time with nickel strings. That interesting as Sadowsky tone is very different with nickel strings.
To my ears, for slap Sadowsky is the best while for finger style, Fender wins.
Thanks for watching and your comment. I also like the way Sadowsky sounds in slapping.
I just posted another video of my Sadowsky but this time with nickel strings. I like it with nickel even more. You’re welcome to have a listen….🙏😊
I like all the bases though.
So do I 😀. Thanks for watching and for your comment 🙏
Personally, I prefer the Sadowsky sound even over the Fender.
Sadowsky sound is closer to my taste as well.
In this video, Sadowsky for me. Sire gets 2nd place
Our opinions are similar 😊. Have you watched my two other videos on my channel where I recorded my Sadowsky and Sire with nickel strings? IMO, they even sound better with nickel strings on 😊
@@majidalizadeh9354 I’ll check that out! I have two basses. One is strung with stainless, the other has nickel as well :)
Atelier and Fender sounded best, the other two lacked bottom end.
@@user-wp4cs6eg8q thanks for watching and for your comment 🙏🙏
They all sound great, but that Atelier Z Dal has a "Larry Graham" old school vibe that I dig.
Thanks for your comment. I agree with you. I have put my AtelierZ on Reverb for sale though if you are interested 😊
♦Hi from France ♥
Ni l'une ni l'autre !
Hi to you. And thanks for watching anyway 😊
Sire is the best by far. Others three have so much scooped tone.
Thanks for your comment. The combo of Sire V5 and EMG PUs gives an amazing sound. Have you watched the other video on my channel where I play this Sire V5 with nickel strings on? I like the sound even more with nickel strings:

Sadowsky the best
Agree with you
The Sadowsky sounds more "pre-amp-y." And the Sire sounds weaker, with less character in general.
Thanks for watching and for your comment 🙏
Your volume knobs on your Fender its not open full! The fender don't have this sound! Its tendencious like for you!
Thanks for your comment. IMHO, it’s a very generic view to say fenders don’t have this sound. There are lots of different fender jazz bass models and each one sounds unique. Moreover, this is a modified fender jb with Bartolini preamp and Lollar PU’s so a lot of factors playing roles for a different sound here. FYI, the master volume knob of the fender is fully open in this demo but of course the input gain on my audio interface was lowered to avoid to much gain and consequently a distorted sound. However, I´m open to any suggestion on how I can make my recordings better with higher quality. I’m still learning every single day :)
fender the best

Yes you’e right, the bass is made in Indonesia but the company is in South Korea.
@@davidsetiady Sadowsky is my favourite too 😊
@@majidalizadeh9354 Sadowsky too Bright....
@@oscarsantos2608 thanks for your comment. I think it is because of the string set I used. Did you watch my other video where I have played my Sadowsky with nickel strings on? It sounds less bright in that one.

Do you mean the Fender is your winner?🥇
Slap on atelier not good
all 4 sounded the same
@@grantkoeller8911 really? They all sound very different in my ears 😀. Thanks for watching anyway 😊
По Мне, Fender самый лучший, вряд-ли его можно достать по звучанию и читаемости, Fender 5 ball
I would add the Harley Benton JB75, best bang for your buck for a 70s style Jazz Bass
Would you prefer the Harley Benton over a Sire V5?
@@majidalizadeh9354 Without the pre-amp of the Sire, I would put them equally in terms of sound and woods, as ash is an amazing and reliable wood (but heavy as heck) in terms of feel that is a subjective, but I really love the neck of the JB75 compared to the Sire as it isn't extra thin and it feels like a Jazz neck with a tough of a P
The biggest difference is IMO the pickups and the QC, the Roswells of the HB are good but they could be a little bit better and it can be solved with an upgrade, and the QC because sometimes HB basses come with maybe ok-ish tuners and sharp frets, while the Sire is more consistently good
@@ricardog.s2505 good points 👌👍
For me. Fender all day every day. Sadowski a close second. The other didn't interest me.
Thanks for your comment. I can’t disagree. I like both of them 😊🙏
I don’t know if you have watched the other video on my channel where I played Sadowsky with nickel strings on. I like it more with nickel strings. You might have the same opinion.
The Marcus Miller sounds better
I like the Fender too
Sadowski.
