Very beautifully explained. Thank you very much for explaining branch selection when starting to train a Bonsai. Very basic information which was not explained before.👏👏☺
i just sort of summarized it, i hope it will be useful to everybody, thank you so very much for sharing. 12 Rules to Bonsai Branch selection. Before starting 1. let the tree grow well for at least 2 to 3 years. 2. if the branch structures are not properly visible, then defoliate the tree before starting to prune the tree. 3. before starting on branch selection, choose the front of the tree (the side which will be facing the viewer) then continue with the following 12 rules. 1. Branches growing from the ground level are to be pruned. “Not bonsai suitable branches” 2. Branches Directly pointing Towards you, remove them (eye poker branch). “it covers the bonsai apex” 3. Branches growing from similar height of the trunk line towards opposite directions, choose and keep one of them, if on a curve preferably remove the one growing from inside of the curve. “Alike branches deteriorate the beauty of a bonsai.” 4. There should not be parallel branches on a bonsai, choose and keep one of them. “Not bonsai suitable at all.” 5. Branches growing from almost same point, choose and keep one of them. 6. Any branch growing vigorously compared to other branches, must be removed. “may damage the bonsai, because growth of other branches can be stopped or die back” 7. Any sub branch from any branch growing to opposite direction, must be removed. 8. Any branch that is growing straight downwards, must be removed. 9. Any branch that is growing straight upwards, must be removed. 10. The top tip (apex) of the tree, must be pruned. “To control the growth of the tree, otherwise the apex will take all the energy to grow taller” 11. The secondary branch grown from primary branch, and the tip of the primary branch, must be pruned. 12. All branches from down up to one third (1/3) of the total height, must be pruned. “So the trunk like will be visible, and will give a mature tree look.”
Thank you so much, Samar. Amazing information. Thank you, Vartan, for summation. I thought Rule No. 11 is : keep the secondary branches but prune the tip of the primary branch... Also the bonsai gifted to me has some branches which should be pruned but are very thick. I’m uncertain whether I should sacrifice them. My third query is: please guide us as to which tools to buy and from where. Thank you so much... I loved this video so much I keep viewing it again and again before I touch my bonsai.
Other Bonsai teachers say "this is how you do it" then go snip snip snip with no explanation. Your video is the first to make the reasoning clear. I can't tell you enough how valuable this is. Subscribed.
Like most artists, you make it look so simple, when I know it takes time and skill to master, thankyou for the knowledge and thankyou for your valuable time to share said knowledge, sunny gardens
You are the only person in RUclips from India who actually knows about Bonsai ..I am very grateful to you for ur wonderfully educative vdo s . Whenever I have doubts about selection of branches etc I come and watch this vdo. This had been extremely helpful to me .I see other Bonsai enthusiasts posting vdo s which are highly defective and misleading and I feel create a negative impression of us Indians . If you conduct any classes in Kolkata I am highly interested to join . If there is any bonsai club I would love to join. My regards to you . 🙏🏻

Glad you liked the update. Wanted to say , "i find this video very usefull video" ,, but i am sure not all the trees i care for are as cut by these 12 rules.,yet =) all in good time.. i been thinking of making small short updates on each tree , planing to give the clementine tree a good 360 rotation and view first. we will see. much love from Norway
