  • The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore has collapsed after being struck by a ship. The collision sent the bridge plummeting into the water below.
    Baltimore police said they were notified of a bridge collapse at approximately 1:40 a.m. Tuesday. They received calls of "multiple people in the water.”
    Baltimore fire officials said at least 20 cars fell into the water below and described the incident as a "mass casualty event."
    A live stream of the bridge showed the moment of collapse. A cargo ship can be seen striking a column of the bridge, sending the bridge into the water below. The ship then caught fire.
    Officials said recovering any people in the water remains a top priority, but conditions for rescuers are risky with debris hanging from the bridge.
    Police said two people were rescued as of 6:30 a.m. ET. One refused treatment and was unharmed. Another was in serious condition and transported to a local trauma center.
    Maryland Gov. Wes Moore and Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said earlier that they had been aware of the incident and were in close communication with other officials, including Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
    “I’ve spoken with Gov. Moore and Mayor Scott to offer USDOT’s support following the vessel strike and collapse of the Francis Scott Key bridge. Rescue efforts remain underway and drivers in the Baltimore area should follow local responder guidance on detours and response,” Buttigieg posted on X.
    The mayor said he had been en route to the scene around 3 a.m.
    The 1.6 mile long bridge spans the Patapsco River as part of I-695, which is south of downtown Baltimore.
    The scene remains active and a search and rescue mission is underway.

    Got a safety issue here.
    Modern vehicles with power windows go dead as soon as they hit the water, and the pressure pushing against the windows and car doors prevents prevents people from opening them.
    Kicking the windows out is not necessarily an option, especially if the airbags go off when the vehicle hits the water.

    • @1LEgGOdt
      @1LEgGOdt Месяц назад

      Actually the power windows will still work. It the manual hand-cranked windows that won’t work.
      And they still will work, it’s the engine that will stop working.
      Did you not watch the episodes of Mythbusters where they tested those myths on how to escape a car that’s gone into a body of water?

    • @1LEgGOdt
      @1LEgGOdt Месяц назад

      @@floodgatestudios1825 actually there’s a reason why the head rests can me fully removed from the seats. And why they have that blunt pointed end. Is so that you can press it up against the window, and with a sudden spike in pressure, you can have the window shatter.
      And that hammer under the seat will end up either going into your ankles or leg or if the water coming in fast, it will get pushed to the back or into a position that will jam it underneath your seat.
      The best thing to do is to open a window and let the water fill the inside of the vehicle before unbuckling yourself. Because that wall of water that will come rushing in will push you away from the point of exit. Also 9 out of 10 times when a vehicle enters a body of water. Depending on the depth of the water, you will either hit nose first, and settle upright, or if it’s deeper, then you’ll end up in the turtle position on the roof of your car.
      So the best bet is to know where your points of exits are in any situation.
      Why do you think that USCG, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Army all have training that places the soldiers into a simulated aircraft and then flip that mock-up upside or roll it a few times in a large swimming pool in all conditions?
      It’s so that the people who will be riding on them will know how to safely get out of the craft as fast as they can while it’s sinking or taking on water. And in some cases they’ll have to escape after it’s been filled with water.

    • @5kylord
      @5kylord Месяц назад +4

      You know absolutely nothing about the engineering of an arch continuous through truss bridge and yet here you are criticizing all the engineers (all much smarter than you) who designed that bridge. NO bridge can withstand the impact of a fully loaded 165,000-ton cargo vessel. Over the span of several decades, thousands of cargo vessels have traversed that waterway just fine without incident. This was a malfunction of the cargo vessel that hit the pillar, NOT a malfunction of the bridge which was never designed to withstand such an impact.
      EDIT: Thankfully this happened at 1:30 in the morning as opposed to during the prime morning or evening commute times when traffic would have been near bumper to bumper heavy and thus yielded many more casualties.

    • @AbelMcTalisker
      @AbelMcTalisker Месяц назад

      @@5kylord They should probably never allow cargo ships built like that to operate internationally. Remember the Suez Canal incident or the recent episode in Turkey, now we have a situation where there has been a significant loss of life and it`s only thankful that it didn`t happen when the bridge was being heavily used. It`s not as if the knowledge to build big ships that are safe exists. It`s just that most cargo ships are garbage.

      Possibly, or just incompetence. There could also be issues with the ship as well. Modern cargo ships are often not built to a very high standard. They are little more than overgrown, unmaneuverable barges. In recent years there has been an upsurge in ships hitting things in ports, sometimes demolishing huge cranes, mysterious sinkings where ships have just broken apart in high seas, and then there was the Suez thing a couple of years ago.
