    I never could get past the fact that the characters spent the best part of their lives in jail for something they didn't do. That overshadowed any comedy in the movie for me.

    • @poopsyko
      @poopsyko Год назад +19

      That is the sad truth but one thing I always remembered watching it is it’s not a comedy and I think that’s why it was under appreciated,everyone expected comic gold with the paring of Eddie and Martin
      It’s a sad movie and it shows mostly when Claude is looking at himself seeing himself as an old man
      That part hit hard.

      Sometimes people laugh at their pain. A lot of comedy comes from dire, hopeless situations. Some folks call it gallows humor. Some folks believe great art comes from great pain. Humor, alcohol, drugs, music, dancing, art, church, these were all things Black folks used to cope with their painful situation.

  • @mistahmst
    @mistahmst Год назад +71

    Highkey a tragedy. Ray and Claude really spent the majority of their lives in prison for a crime they didn’t commit. Unfortunately, this is a reality for many black men in America.

      True, but Ray made a valid point: Claude wouldn't have been in that predicament initially with Spanky if he had money to pay for his tab at the club that night and he would've had money if he didn't owe dangerous loan sharks. So, ultimately, Claude put himself in that situation from jump. "If it wasn't for me, you'd be floating down a beach in Coney Island. Remember that 'I need my fingers for adding shit?' Bokeem woodbine and Lisa Nicole Carson have done two movies together. Jason’s lyric and Life. This movie still makes me laugh but it also pisses me off on so many different levels. Ray and Claude missed out on everything they wanted to do in their lives all because they were accused of murder when they didn’t do it. The world has changed so much in the 70s and they missed out on everything from the 30s. Their lives didn’t change at all but everything around them did and it was very depressing and sad 😢

    • @robertfranks665
      @robertfranks665 5 месяцев назад

    This movie grew on me. The first time I saw it I thought it was just alright but it got better to me every time after that.
    It was sad but that's not what I took from it. Ray and Claude continued to pursue their freedom even in their old age and after so many plans failed and so many disappointments, they finally were able to get up out if there. The moral of the story is no matter how many times you get knocked down, keep getting back up. It had similarities to Shawshank Redemption.

When i went to see him with my grandma, my siblings, and cousin i just felt the weight of my uncle being confined to a building. Also, going in leaving valuables in a locker, getting patted down, and waiting for my uncle to walk through a door was traumatic.

    I've always thought this movie was a tragedy. It's sad knowing that in real life, the lives of African-American men were thrown away at the whims of a system that hated them because of the color of their skin. And it's made worse knowing that there was never any recompense; not one "we're sorry" for Jim Crow laws.
