- In her Broadway concert show in 1995, Patti finally got the chance to sing "Meadowlark" on Broadway. Stephen Schwartz's song is from "The Baker's Wife," which closed out of town in '76. Patti's first words refer to the Kennedy Center in D.C.
Holy crap, that piano part was amazing!!! Major props to the accompanist!!!
Yeah, amazing. The standard accompaniments is an advanced arrangement. This is not the standard accompaniment but beyond that somewhat.
This woman can move mountains with her voice wow
She can handle any song from any musical. Some do it better, but it still has all Patti's craft and voice.
This comment section doesn't understand the brilliance of three-time Tony Award-winning actress, Patti LuPone. The original singer of this song. The reason the song is widespread and has a cult following. This doesn't have to be your favorite take on the song, but to put her down, the originator of the song is rude and is not good criticism.
This is my first time hearing this song in the history of ever
This has so much *urgency* as a rendition. It makes me want to go do something.
Love her so much such a amazing talent
I love Patti; however, this isn't my favorite rendition. She's still a GOAT!
Actually Patti's original rendition is by far the best and everyone else is an imitation. Try to get a hold of the minimal cast recording with Lupone, Sorvino etc. You hear what makes everyone else want to sing this song.
Lupone and sorvino
There is the Les Mouches Version with her.
Patti’s version is original, full of verve, expression & passion, but I cannot distinguish certain words & phrases. I had a friend who knew her..... he used to host her on his sailboat and taught English on Long Island..... I never thought to ask him if she had been his student until now, but like the meadowlark, he is gone from us.
I love Patti... but even if you disagree that Liz Callaway's version is far superior, it is indisputable that it is far from an imitation of Patti's.
I actually prefer Alice Ripley's Meadowlark.
y’all complain too much yet no one in this section can sing like she does ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
That outfit is fucking iconic
The lead in (present on the cast album) is not here, it exists elsewhere
A famous song? Never heard it before
Is that mic even on, the women is a power house.
Do you have the whole concert? This was her double album but I didn’t know there’s a video! Wow! Thank you 🙏🏽😀
I think this is when they went to Broadway...after the Sunset debacle
@@barbraseville8984What debacle?
I absolutely adore her recording on the original off Broadway cast recording ... but, now, I don't know how she can work so hard to spit out consonants and still remain totally unintelligible LOL.
That is the one problem I have with Lupone. She has a ridiculously powerful voice, obviously, but her diction, dammit. I cannot understand what she sings 80 % of the time.
“Totally unintelligible” is the definition of hyperbole. Especially if you claim to be familiar with the song.
You need to have your ears examined!
Musical theatre + soul = PATTI LUPONE
Patti is #1. No one like her!
Wow.
❤
Great song, great show, but come on, here she is being a parody of herself!!!
Oh my god it's yellow diamond!
Malachite Productions haha! I see what you're doin buddy! 😂
I was looking for the SU fandom
I love Patti, but nobody sings Meadowlark like Liz Callaway!!
Young patti is much better. Patti sang like the character; Liz made a disney princess version of the song. Context matters.
As much as I love Patti, I still like Liz Callaway's version a lot better. This definitely doesn't feel as intimate as it should. This song is very emotional, and should be performed as such. Still love Patti though.
This just seems rushed to me. The accompaniment is fantastic but the whole performance appears to be rushed, almost thrown away.
It's so fast
She is at her most mannered here. Kind of like she's auditioning for Sunset Boulevard.
WHAT's THE USE OF FEELING?
Lapy The Petite Kitty that’s for you to discover. A rhetorical question evidences a closed mind.
Neko Missy thank you! I’ll have to look upYellowDiamond later, unless you can please provide a link?
Neko Missy ah, got it!!! StevenUniverse. Thanks to Wikipedia article on P.L. Did you see my post about my deceased friend who knew Patti?
Neko Missy my comment is under Leo Mack’s main comment, if you’d like to view &read it.... duplicating it here would be tedious
Too fast to hear the words.
This recording doesn't do justice to seeing her perform this live on stage... The piano accompaniment is brilliant but too loud in this recording and rushed.
all of these comments are awful! Y'all are dum
(the les mouche version is much better, it's the definitive version in my opinion)
Alex Fulmer link?
This is really disappointing. She came off way too casual. This is a very emotional song. This was almost funny.
Part of the casual attitude might be that the full lead-in to this song , which is very funny, is not heard in this clip. It's quite hilarious about how she talks about the disastrous journey that was The Baker's Wife that closed out of town before it even made it back to New York. You can hear the whole intro on the double disk recording of this show of Patti Lupone LIVE, not the single disk highlights version.
It's kind of tough to segue from something so funny to such a serious song. Still, this is by far NOT her best performance of this song. I saw this show on Broadway and she killed it. In fact, she warmed up with this song and everyone could hear her outside in the lobby of the Walter Kerr Theater waiting to get in. Listen to this song on the recording of this show that was actually done at the out-of-town pre-Broadway performance at Westwood Theater in Los Angeles. It's quite good and FAR more nuanced than this, which must have been late in the run of her Broadway performances because even though I love Patti, I can say this sucks pretty bad. Even her phrasing isn't good, lots of two-measure phrases instead of four with unnecessary breaths. She still takes this song as a brisk pace (it is a LONG song, after all, and I prefer all one tempo rather than the slower opening), but it's still MUCH better than this.
lcowles yeah I saw that. But I can’t help but think if she sang it like this in the show, no wonder it was a disaster. She’s hilarious, and very talented. But I’m still sad lol.
Katie: Ya, it was NOT like this the night I saw her or I would have been pissed, not only because the tickets were expensive, but because it was my first Broadway show of any kind. Patti's voice and interpretation is an acquired taste to begin with, so when she's off (which is rare) it's more than a little difficult to listen to.
lcowles ah. And ya I love Patti in general. She’s very talented.
Are you watching the same video?
She seems like such a put on.. and this is not her best tune, by a long shot.. Liz Callaway's is a show stopper.. the best I have ever head. This is a 3 act play in a song, Patti rushes it and it is not nuanced much..it gets faster and faster.... Loud and louder.. my voice teacher called it "shouting"
has your teacher gotten any tonys or grammys? if not go back to singing school, drama school or wherever she/he is from.
Oh I didnt mean to offend you.. I am a pro.. and extensive Theatrical.. and ok, maybe a tad critical.. goodness, one cant say a word anymore without the wrath coming down.. sorry Chris..
I agree, and Liz Callaway's is absolute magic, her voice just soars :-)
at any rate, can anyone "shout" better? I say no. ;-)
Okay, I've listened to several top contenders and here is my unsought for opinion on best performances :-)
Andrew Rannells
Liz Callaway
Patti LuPone
Alice Ripley
Betty Buckley
Titus Burgess :-( no thanks.
Not good. Sorry.
Yikes! After hearing Sarah Brightman’s version this one sounds almost comical and lackadaisical. Sarah’s is my favorite
Ummm Sarah sings this in a different placement. It's supposed to be belt. I love Sarah but there's no power in her versiom
@@dominiquepowellstjames1103 ill take Sarah’s version over this rushed all over the place version.
what a weird outfit does nothing for her .... would not be wild about her rendition
Terrible.
