Ah, yes, the Great sword, slayer of Mohrans. Once you see those arms break after a single combo, you don't want to use anything else on a huge stationary target like this one. I like how simple yet powerful those combos are. Some weapons take some time to master, but the GS is easy to understand, as long as you know how to use the openings. Thank you for these great tutorials, Gaijin.
Well, actually, you´re suposed to discover all that on your own. It´s kinda Impressive when you discover all these random tricks. [Yeah, sometimes It´s annoying to not know this]
Some moves you didn't mention (that are kinda lesser known, I didn't find out til tonight): A > A(hold): another way to do a super charge. You can also use A after doing a super swing. So basically you can do: A > A(hold, super charge) > A(super swing) over and over again. I used to think your only option after doing a super swing was to just let your combos or moves reset to idle position, but turns out in the rare cases where you have a locked up for extra time or it's stationary, you can endlessly supercombo on it.
Patxiku93 Well, you would because it's actually faster than a supercharge. So, if you don't have enough of a window, it's a better option. The horizontal slash also does more damage than a slap, albeit with more movement, so if you wanna focus on DPS, if you need to advance, or if you can't hit the target with blunt damage without bouncing (diablos, molten tigrex), a horizontal slash is better even if you don't wanna go into a super charge. (Actually the backswing is likewise good for this, as it's the highest damage non-charge move, but I think it may be a bit slower than a slap or swipe, plus it causes you to step back which may through off positioning.)
gaijin hunter I don't know if you knew this, but I discovered a few things about the Greatsword (by accident lol) that you missed to mention. 1. By pressing A after either a Side Slash or a Wide Slash, you will go straight into a Strong Slash. So the Side Slap is not the only way to access the Strong Slash. 2. Right at the end of the Super Slash animation, you can either do a Roll (Forward or side to escape a monster, which I'm sure you already knew) or press A for a Side Slash, which open the possibility for another Strong Slash -> Super Slash (Infinite Combo with a Strong Slash ->Super Slash? YES PLEASE!!!) 3. If you Press X after a Side Roll, you will chain into a Wide Slash (then a Strong Slash if you wish). By the way, you will not be chain into a Wide Slash by pressing A after a Side Roll Anyway, love your videos!!! Keep'em coming!
Holy shiet man, thanks for saying this, this stuff really goes hand in hand with my gs play style. I'm glad you covered this because its so amazing OuO
These are some great extra moves, I actually use the side roll into spin slash often myself! I've also discovered another random tidbit of GS mechanics - if you happen to have your weapon drawn and you climb up a short cliff (the kind where you don't need to press A), if you tap X while climbing up, you will do a very quick downward slash that's even faster than the draw attack (but can't be charged for extra damage!). Its usefulness is limited, but sometimes its a nice fast follow-up if you happen to be just below a small ledge with a monster standing above it (like do a draw attack then roll forward into the ledge and do this quick ledge slash for extra damage before rolling and sheathing). Also, not really GS specific, but I found out if you are hanging on a tall wall, instead of pressing A to leap off, you can tap B with no directions to drop straight down then tap X while falling but before landing, and you will immediately wall-jump off the wall, turn around and do an air attack. What's significant here is that this wall jump sends you much less far than the one where you tap A, so you can use this to attack something directly below you (often pressing A sends you too far away from the wall and you leap right over the monster instead). Since GS has potentially the most powerful jumping attack in the game damage-wise (especially if you do it while sheathed with Crit Draw), I thought this was useful to know.
thanks man you're a ideal hunter unlike others becoming too high and mighty when some newbies ask something and they reply is "git gud" continue the good work!
There's a way to be mobile with the great sword. Unsheathe it, then perform a roll and press A to use the side hit that does impact damage. Rinse and repeat. It's great for closing in distances. The only con is that it's most effective when you're going in one direction. Doing a side roll while doing this is going to hinder mobility and make you open to getting hit by the monster. You don't have to do this with every monster. It's mostly for speedy monsters like Zinogre and Gore Magala where they're moving all the time.
I think "iconic" is the word you were looking for when describing the great sword, not popular. Every single uploader but you and projared is using that scrub-magnet charge blade in M4U. I won't ever use the damn thing out of spite for how many of them say its' the only weapon worth using. You have, by far, been the most informative and unbiased uploader I have been using to learn this game. Stay golden.
One thing, in MH4U, you can use the Strong Charged Attack (Overhead Slash) after a Wide Slash by pressing A again. Then it's possible to use the Super Swipe faster. It would be cool to put in tehe video that, if you don't have Focus to use the full combo on a downed monster, you could use Wide Slash, Strong Charged Slash and then Super Swipe instead.
I've had MH4U since it came out, watched your videos and guides on MH4U as it came out, but I stuck mostly to the weapons I was previously good with, as well as learning Insect Glaive because well... I love bugs and couldn't give up the opportunity to learn a weapon involving bugs. Just today I made Chameleos' Great Sword and decided I was going to give the weapon a try because I previously had sort of written it off because I tend to go for faster weapons, which is funny because SA is my favorite weapon.. but anyway.. I decided to try it out on a low rank expedition. I stayed in the starting area and watched this video, practicing the moves and getting the hang of it. Went to the next area and found Tetsucabra! He bashed me around a little bit as I tried to run around swinging a little mindlessly at him while trying to find some strategy, then after a few hits I finally got a little bit more of a hang of it and took him down in less than two minutes. I literally said 'holy crap' out loud because I was shocked at just how few hits he went down in. Almost immediately after he went down a Seltas showed up and I decided to take him down too. After swinging around at the air like an idiot trying to get him to come down, he falls on the ground I obliterate him in two big hits. Then I figure that's all I'll run into, in the next area there's a Khezu standing around minding his own business so I run up and swing heavy at him, dance around, get hit by one of his body shocks but after just a handful of big hits he's down too. Although they were only low rank monsters it still gave me that uplifiting feeling like I was getting into the rhythm of great sword, so thanks for having this tutorial, and all your others because they're the reason I feel good about branching outside of weapons I wouldn't normally think I'd be good at!
Loving your tutorial videos! Nice to see all of the new features shown and explained to good lengths. Can't wait to see your tutorials for the remaining weapons and can't wait for MH4U in the west! :D
Fun little fact with GS you can go right into the third charge slash by pressing A a second time, or anytime you swing the great sword in that manner and pressing it a 3rd time will do the super swing
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that you can also angle the A side swipe attack left and right in a combo to slightly change the direction you're facing. You also didn't mention the ability to twitch charge attacks left or right, which is really, really useful at a low/intermediate level. Great guide, though! I've been looking for the MH4U motion values for greatsword; draw attack is a lot stronger than I had thought!
It's hard to hate the GS. On one hand it's overused, but on the other hand; it's a damn fine weapon with a deceptively high skill level. Most people I played with back in MHtri on the Wii didn't fair well with it, and I met even less really good GS users in MH3U. But seeing this tutorial may help a lot of western users. Which is good, because I like having someone who can reliably chop tails off in the party.
I know the feeling. As a GS user chopping tails was never hard, but I like hammer too and can't do it with that. I would get a sword and board that's like "I'll chop tail" right off the bat and I kill the monster with the tail still on after 2-3 knockouts.
I never used Great Sword in any Monster Hunter game. I always used Lance and SnS because those weapons compliment each other and cover what the other can't as a mean of mixed offense and defense. I just finished my Blademaster Ash Kecha Wacha set; and I hear it has a good GS that can go along with its sharpness and constitution ability. It will be perfect for dodging and blocking!
Oh, Ash Kecha Wacha GS is beast. I only use it because it has 3 slots tho, because if my talisman had 2 slots, I would change to Stygian Zinogre GS FAST
Never use any evasion skill with GS. You have your weapon sheathed most of the time, so you can panicdive. If your weapon is out you have an emergency guard. Invest in offensive skills instead.
Double diablos path with Sharpness +1 and crit +3 has been my go to since MHFU... evade distance with a GS is nice, you roll alllmost as fast as somebody running
Some of the improvements and 1 revert that I've noticed that I really appreciate about Greatsword this time around: - Smash Charge is now very useful with the addition of the Charged Swing immediately afterwards. - At the last half of the Downward slash (starting from the peak of the swing) they seem to have increased the speed with which the GS slams into the ground, giving draw attacks and charge attacks better timing availability. Maybe it's just the higher framerate though. - He didn't show but you can now roll into slaps which allows for infinite roll combo slaps and a quick way into Smash charges after a roll. - And the 1 revert... The Greatsword FINALLY hits at the peak of the swing again. It used to do this in Freedom Unite. But ever since 3rd gen they made it hit about 3/5 - 3/4 down into the swing (imagine the swing as a 180 Degree angle and you actually began hitting at about 120-130 degrees instead of 90 degrees). This made hitting high up heads and tails incredibly difficult and wonky. It also made swings visibly go through tails and heads only to hit the leg or chest (respectively) instead. This is excellent news that it's been changed back in 4th gen. Now Greatsword can be really good at tail cutting again like it used to be and there won't be any wonky clipping through without damage at the peak of the swing like in 3rd gen. Basically I'll hit when I expect to hit.
Something i discovered is that if you press X directly after a forward evade, you do a side slap and dash forward a bit, then you can immediately go into a strong charge. It's super useful for catching up with monsters that move around a lot.
Lol iceman noob isn't getting too much revenue from either twitch/RUclips, aside from his patreon/PayPal/twitch donations. Pretty sure RUclips isn't giving him shit same with twitch atm.
so you are basicly saying "i am tired of someone who really adores a game made by you and others and spending his free time by helping other people out" yeah. what a dick
The_Orange_Lord it's not bad I've been using the gs the majority of the time thus far and it's good since then I've been messing about with other weapons
I found out another thing while playing After using the Side Slash (A), I could press and hold to immediately charge up a Strong Charge Slash! I could also Combo into this move after the Super Charge Swipe (Good Lord, it sounds like a really cheesy anime attack) So after that, I press A, it does a Side Swipe then straight to another Strong Charge Slash
I'm sure you know this already, but I didn't see this in your video. You can do a horizontal swipe and then hit A again to go into the strong charge without having to hold a directional button. I was experimenting on the demo just now and found it out. As a person who rarely uses the side slap, it makes the attacks flow much better!
I remember I was playing online killing a Diablos. It was paralyzed. Me and another one, both with GS were hitting the tail. 1st was the charge, he tried to do the other charge, but I launched him up. I was like so sorry, until hi did an aerial slash, sewering Diablos´s tail. *Most epic Tail cut ever* xD
quick note, the guard kick is actually fairly useful because you can press R and X simultaneously and do a kick without guarding, I find this more convenient than pressing the special button..
I feel it should be mentioned after a super swipe, depending when you press A during the recovery animation (without rolling), your character does two different animations for a swipe attack. Mashing the A button does a grab to slash attack, while waiting a bit for them to already pick it up does a really fancy over-back spin to slash. Don't know how it's useful, but +5 for style.
Funny enough, there's one thing about the GS in this game I find underutilized (Gaijin didn't even cover it in this vid): the side slap you can do after an evade. By pressing forward + X after an evade w/ your weapon out, you basically get a second evade, which helps a ton when you're in a pinch. The slap itself isn't very strong, but the additional mobility compensates tremendously. So remember GS-ers, stop drop and roll...and slap.
Everyone say that GS is overused, but i swear i haven't seen a single GS yet on MH4U multiplayer. I keep seeing long swords, gunlances, bowguns, duals, a few switch-weaps and lots of those new insect rods. Anyway nice vid, but you forgot to say that: -you can go for a slap after a foward roll. -you can go for a wide slash after a side roll (pressing X, not A). -you can go for a super charged after a wide slash.
The GS is my all time favorite weapon. I used a particular one (Vulcanvil-R)/(Vulcamagnon-P) for nearly every hunt. The key to GS is to know when to chain blows, when to actually guard and when to evade which strongly depends on the monster you're fighting. Most of the time you should evade but if not possible or too risky just block the incoming attack.
Another new thing in MH4U, you can do a Strong Charge Attack by pressing A button after a A attack. If you don't have the time to do the X+X+X combo, you can do A+A (and you can make the Super Swipe with A again).
@gaijin hunter I love all of your videos. I may have missed one where it is explained but what do the numbers mean when your describing the attacks. Ex Strike X - (65)
Just like to add there is a reason to actually use wide sweep to overhead smash as a continuous combo. It ignores the wind from a landing wyverns (i.e. raths) and keeps you in one spot. Granted I know this worked from original MH to MHFU, and quite sure it worked on MH3U. I haven't Played MH4U Yet, So I'm not sure if its true for it as well. Its great for Cheap shots on tails and knocking wyverns out of air as they tried to land. With my group i was using this combo to chop at feet and knocking monster over constantly while they hit the other areas. of course that after I cut off the tail. Definitely don't agree on blocking.
You Forgot a combo that let you use a super charge after an A attack, is A-A-A that lead into the super swipe Very good tutorial anyway, thanks for what are you and other hunters doing for the community. Let's Hunt!
You can get a full Charge > Super Charge > Super Swipe WITHOUT Focus on a Mount-Toppled monster. Quick Sheath is more useful on GS than Focus honestly, as it allows you to hit and run much faster and safer. The only weapon where Focus is pretty much mandatory is the Bow.
I think the gs combo chain is good on its own when low rank and high rank. Getting underneath monsters and chain comboing with the gs allows you to solo stronger monsters when ill equipped. With practice you can solo g rank monsters with a gs mostly from comboing until you knock them over, and then charging.
+MeDiTate FaST You can solo strong enemies with the charge and draw attacks even faster. Getting in the gs combo chain is a bad thing. Not only for later solo play, but also for online play. You can much easier solo monster by doing draw attacks and charge attack when the opening presides itself. And by training yourself in that way you will learn all the openings of the monsters.
gaijin hunter the times I played with a GS I discovered you can do the super charge by pressing A after a wide slash. or most times by holding A instead of down + X :P
I chain side swipe and overhead smash a lot actually. The last MH game i played was the first one on the ps2 and that was the BnB back then. It's still pretty solid dps if you get under a monster where you cant be hit (like while they are tail swiping at you) and just wail on them until they finish. Also I use the L'Origine so I'm basically always critting.
I'm not sure if you mention it but you can go from a wide attack to a strong charge attack if you time it correctly. Yo need to press and keep A after a wide slash when the blade is at your back before it goes back to the drawn position. It's not really dificult after a bit of practice and I found it to be the easiest way to get a strong charge attack if you don't have much time
Is it okay that I find that guarding with GS is also better than running around? IDK why, but it just doesn't fit. The way you use it is definitely not what the weapon was designed for.
You can straight into strong charge after wide slash by pressing A and then super slash after would be strongest combo side slap would be quicker and have a stun attribute to the combo
Is chain swiping good for damage? I normally just charge draw + side smack + super charge + finisher + side swipe. Had a guy who was 200 ranks higher than me chain swiping + overhead smashing and knocking over all of our teammates. It baffled me.
Here is a combo not mentioned but is one that i use: X (any lvl) A A (it has a small red charge similair to super swipe) A.... and continue it with either X or A
Is quick sheath worth it? I mean, I saw a video around youtube that shows the difference between a non-quick sheath and a quick one and there wasn't that much of a difference. If I could ditch it to get an offensive ability would it be better?
It is worth it against fast monsters that can punish you easily for blocking. Brachydios is one such monster that will demolish a GS if he can catch you in stun lock during a Guard. Quick Shealth usually halves the speed of the sheath animation, making it far easier to be ready for evasion based defense. You can fight most monsters without it, but it can be really useful if you have a hard time learning when to leave you blade out and when to cut and run.
In my way to get to HR999 I’ve been troubled by which weapon should I focus on. I’ve mained the GL for LR, the Bow for HR, the CB for GR, and Lance for post GRank. However, for a change of pace, I’m deciding whether I pick the GS or SnS until I get to HR999. Any suggestions?
I think you failed to mention that you can directly combo into the underhanded Super charge from the horizontal A slash. If you press and hold A right afterwards, you will begin the underhanded super charge. So A --> Hold A
Maybe a dumb question, but does anyone know what armor set that is he's using at the start? I've seen it in a few videos, seems good, but I'm not entirely sure what skills it comes with though.
This weapon is too simple, easy, and safe. People keep whining about Gunners being easy but at least they run the risk of being one-shotted due to their low armor. GS is just hit, evade, hit, evade, and charge when you feel you have a big opening. No need to worry about how many hits you can get in during small openings before you evade or being stuck in an additional attack animation that you may have wanted. Also, the ability to block is amazing. It can really save your ass where most other weapons won't have this option. Its also much more reliable than evade +1. Unless you're a "pro," opting to evade can get you killed if you time it wrong but blocking is as simple as just blocking. Honestly though, GS is so simple and safe, getting evade +1 is unnecessary and a waste of an Armor Skill, especially if you're running Quick Sheath. Just block during those rare times when you really feel you can't escape an attack.
Oh right, and the Super Charge and Super Swipe just made this weapon even more overpowered. You can get insane damage without being super aggressive or risky. With mounting as well, GS is just stupidly overpowered, seriously.
I used GS in MH3U (it was my first MH game), I was going to try other weapons in 4U but I might have to remake my GS for that Super Swipe finisher. Love the tutorials Will we see tutorials on the Gunner weapons, too? Would love to see the bow in 4U
Oh man, everytime I feel unconfident about fighting a monster, I just bring out my trusty Greatsword and have a fun ride mashing monster face and brutally chopping off tails with that sweet sweet charged attack :D
What is the role of of a GS in online play? How often should they be getting hits in (to make a difference). I don't feel very involved in groups. It's usually hit and run and try to mount every chance you get. Everyone else feels more useful stacking status effects or knocking it over at the legs and such. When the monster is on the ground that's when a GS can stack on the damage (on specific body parts as well), but before that I feel pretty useless unless I get a mount.
***** Greatsword is all about learning the monster's patterns. You can get level 3 charges surprisingly often when you really learn to play, and that's where the massive damage starts to come in, or you can just fucking go yolo with the thing and fish level 3 charges whenever, it works surprisingly often because more often than not, smacking a monster with a level 3 will make it flinch, making you safe, so just keep at it and you'll notice that the Greatsword has some of highest damage you can possibly do. My cleartimes were pretty much cut in half when I really learned how to play with it.
Another benefit that my groups love is for a fatality when the beast sleeps. There is a damage modifier on the first hit done on a sleeping monster. A full charged GS on the face of a creature is usually the last thing ever needed. Especially with Crit Draw or a weapon with a high crit chance. I'm not sure there is any other weapon in the game that can cause that much damage in a single strike.
Can someone explain how the damage formula works? The numbers in parenthesis..like the 48 from the draw attack..does it mean it does 48% of the weapons raw damage?
I use the crit draw, sheathe, and repeat method, but is a "hack and slash" method viable? I am thinking AUXL, crit draw, focus, and some type of evasion combined with L'Origine.
It is hard to recommend it, as one big aspect of the Great Sword is that you have a level of super armor available to you when charging that you don't get with uncharged attacks. This means that you are far more likely to have a Rathian knock you out of a combo when they turn around and accidentally step on you. The Long Sword, Dual Swords and Sword-n-Shield I've found to be much more effective at the Hack-n-Slash style than the GS. Here is some more food for thought. One lvl 3 charged attack is out damaged by 3 normal swings but that one charged attack can be charged in half the time of that combo, can't be knocked out of it and allows for evasion immediately after use. Plus you get the added bonus that a well coordinated group will be able to more easily work around you. A fun armor set to use for GS if you want to be able to maximize your crit is to use the L'Origine with some Azure Rathalos armor. The High grade ear plugs cover one of the few things super armor doesn't work with, you get improved crit for both your normal damage and your elementals (elemental damage isn't quite as useful for GS, but when you want to make it so every hit counts it sure helps with this build) and the Razor Sharp makes it harder for your weapon to dull. It's an easy armor set to build (Most of the skills are covered by default with the armor), covers a lot of bases (works with any elemental weapon), and definitely is a game changer when you get a well timed crit that knocks the monster over for the group to tackle. Not perfect, but there is a reason this armor was what is shown off on the US cover of MH3U.
very usefull, but in my opinion blocking is one of the best GS features. Allow you to fight head to head with large monsters without stepping away. I rather lose my sharpness than get hit... Thx
"After a side smack, pull back on the circle pad and hold X" Wtf I do this all the time and it never strong charges. I always have to do one wide swing then charge
So I don't understand why not to block. I just started using the GS today and I'm new to it,but blocking seemed like a really great thing to have with it. Obviously you will still sheath it to cover distance between you and the monster, but close up, blocking has saved me several times.
+BettySweatCakes you probably know this all ready but it degrades the sharpness real fast if you constantly block. hence why you only block in "oh crap" scenarios.
Psst, you can go into a strong-charge directly after a horizontal swing now by doing forward+A after the horizontal swing. And for a moment, there, I thought you were gonna forget to mention that the slap has impact damage. lol
GS was the very first weapon I tried in MHF2, my first MH. Hated it because it was too slow (I knew jack shit about using the thing in the first place) so I dropped it for LS. Finally giving it another shot in 4U and LAWWD what was I doing not using this!!!!?
Definitely expert. Mainly, because it's a universal benefit. The problem with tenderizer is the following: alot of monsters take extra damage to unbroken parts. If you break them faster, you might end up doing less damage all in all. In the end: If you can get Attack Up take it. In almost all cases Attack Up is better statistically.
Tenderizer I find is useful in a case by case basis. Love it against monsters that have a hard shell to crack, like the Gravios but SpaceDisco1 is right that Expert is far more useful in general. I mention the Gravios because once the chest is broken it has almost no armor there, making the fight done really fast.
So does Greatsword get it's level 1 charge instantly in this game? If so that's awesome. In 3 Ultimate, even with Fastcharge the level 1 charge was slow. So charging seems faster innately in this game. And it appears that the blade comes down for the down swing faster. This is great. I always felt that the Greatsword was a bit too slow for the speed boost given to monsters in 3 Ultimate. This could be just what it needed.
+Sand Katze Well the GS is the perfect weapon to learn enemy patterns with. Which in the long run will help you master all the other weapons.
That's certainly true. I felt the same about the Switch Axe, too.
Your weapon tutorials are so useful, far more than the in-game guides
There's so much to these weapons that you're simply not told
I noticed that too (ex. they don't tell you about the charge move when you use the Lance, or what you can do with said move).
Well, actually, you´re suposed to discover all that on your own. It´s kinda Impressive when you discover all these random tricks. [Yeah, sometimes It´s annoying to not know this]
"Toss me."

HAHAHAHA
Some moves you didn't mention (that are kinda lesser known, I didn't find out til tonight):
A > A(hold): another way to do a super charge.
You can also use A after doing a super swing.
So basically you can do:
A > A(hold, super charge) > A(super swing)
over and over again.
I used to think your only option after doing a super swing was to just let your combos or moves reset to idle position, but turns out in the rare cases where you have a locked up for extra time or it's stationary, you can endlessly supercombo on it.
Something not mentioned :
Besides normal evade for a smack, use side evade to do a swipe in the combo above
Fighting Mohrans... GS is really brutal
The funny thing is about that is that was the only thing I knew how to do before watching this video
Btw love your vids!
+Zedrin you can algo go from a swipe to a normal charge attack. I don't know why would you but the option is there
Patxiku93 Well, you would because it's actually faster than a supercharge.
Guys they called it a greatsword because it's such a GREAT sword
ahh...it was funnier in my head, i'll go back to sleep now.
Clockwork lool, what you mean? i thought it was funny. lool
All these years later, and still the best 4U weapon guides on the internet. Can't believe I never found you when I first played
Just kindled my interest in GS with this tutorial, great job man :)
gaijin hunter I don't know if you knew this, but I discovered a few things about the Greatsword (by accident lol) that you missed to mention.
YES PLEASE!!!)
3. If you Press X after a Side Roll, you will chain into a Wide Slash (then a Strong Slash if you wish). By the way, you will not be chain into a Wide Slash by pressing A after a Side Roll
Anyway, love your videos!!!
Yep found some of these out after playing too after playing for awhile, but again thanks for the info ^^
thanks man you're a ideal hunter unlike others becoming too high and mighty when some newbies ask something and they reply is "git gud" continue the good work!
I suppose you meant X after the roll, not A, as A does the horizontal slash.
zakutei You're right, I made an error there. Lol
The power of a GS is overwhelming.
Exactly the same story as you except I made the Gore Magala GS. How's the insect Glaive doing in Generations? I never picked the game up ;O
I see lots of GS users in G rank and now I'm starting to understand why. That Zinogre clip made me want build a GS set lol
+cmndrkool321 A lot of weapons compliment each other. A Hamer, HH, IG, lance will compliment any combo you want.
Crit Draw, Focus, Quick Sheath (and Sharp +1 if you can get it) is all you could ever want on a GS
***** atk up is always nice too
it all goes down to playstyle preference, doesnt matter what you say lol people will do whatever feels right to them.
Double diablos path with Sharpness +1 and crit +3 has been my go to since MHFU... evade distance with a GS is nice, you roll alllmost as fast as somebody running
***** Is crit draw 100% crit again? or is it the same as 3u?
Goodness, the focus in this game seems to make the GS even faster than how it felt in 3U, awesome.
Oh man I love these tutorials! I'm looking forward to the bowguns/bow tutorials!
this is the best monster hunter channel on youtube
Some of the improvements and 1 revert that I've noticed that I really appreciate about Greatsword this time around:
- Smash Charge is now very useful with the addition of the Charged Swing immediately afterwards.
I love your vids man. Thanks for all the guides!
I've been playing since freedom 2 and I learned some new things. I also main great sword so good job you gave good information.
The kick is actually good for combos, you can unseathe your sword by using the instant guard, kick, slap and go for the second charge pretty fast.
Something i discovered is that if you press X directly after a forward evade, you do a side slap and dash forward a bit, then you can immediately go into a strong charge. It's super useful for catching up with monsters that move around a lot.
Great Video Gaijin =). I really hope that your channel growth and you gain the views you deserve. I am tired the Icemanoob gain money with your work.
Lol iceman noob isn't getting too much revenue from either twitch/RUclips, aside from his patreon/PayPal/twitch donations. Pretty sure RUclips isn't giving him shit same with twitch atm.
so you are basicly saying "i am tired of someone who really adores a game made by you and others and spending his free time by helping other people out" yeah. what a dick
Masamune TV pero madre mia willy pero que haces aqui compañero
Thank you for the video, never saw much potential of this weapon before :D
Bruh you changed my mind about the GS. I'm gonna use the fuck out of this weapon now that extra wide swing after charge looks so bad ass
same reason for me ahah, amazing to do such a powerfull attack right after a beast one
+John Roeung usually i use SA but i have a relic GS so i might start use it because of what this video showed me
The_Orange_Lord it's not bad I've been using the gs the majority of the time thus far and it's good since then I've been messing about with other weapons
I found out another thing while playing
After using the Side Slash (A), I could press and hold to immediately charge up a Strong Charge Slash!
Good tip, fellow hunter. Thank you. :-)
I was doing so many things wrong, thanks a lot for this!
I might finally give this weapon a try.
quick note, the guard kick is actually fairly useful because you can press R and X simultaneously and do a kick without guarding, I find this more convenient than pressing the special button..
Super Charge can also performed using Up+X or Hold A after Wide-slash, also side slap can be performed after a roll
Such a helpful tutorial. Very informative too. Great job!! ^_^
Robert Harris gamer mom
Been using GS since i first saw it on the cover of the first MH on the ps2. Dat bone blade just looked so badass the first time i saw it.
Everyone say that GS is overused, but i swear i haven't seen a single GS yet on MH4U multiplayer.
I keep seeing long swords, gunlances, bowguns, duals, a few switch-weaps and lots of those new insect rods.
Anyway nice vid, but you forgot to say that:
-you can go for a slap after a foward roll.
-you can go for a wide slash after a side roll (pressing X, not A).
-you can go for a super charged after a wide slash.
I've only seen 1 great sword user in my 119 hours in 4U...but ive seen about 100 charge blade users
Colossal Titan I have seen at least a couple. Doesn't mean there were many!
+Pasta DellaNonna GS user here. All the way since the first MH in PS2. Oh, and a bow user too from time to time.
ive seen alot of em.
Nice work~! btw thx for all the tutorial videos :)
Nice
Another new thing in MH4U, you can do a Strong Charge Attack by pressing A button after a A attack. If you don't have the time to do the X+X+X combo, you can do A+A (and you can make the Super Swipe with A again).
I did not know about that strong charge, Thanks!
Definitely don't agree on blocking.
convinced me to try out the weapon for sure.
You Forgot a combo that let you use a super charge after an A attack, is A-A-A that lead into the super swipe
Very good tutorial anyway, thanks for what are you and other hunters doing for the community.
Here is a combo not mentioned but is one that i use: X (any lvl) A A (it has a small red charge similair to super swipe) A.... and continue it with either X or A
+Lars Heijman thats actually the super swipe. X > A > A(hold A to charge, this is the super swipe) > A (the finisher)
+Lars Heijman it's the same super swipe as in the video, just a different way to do it.
Yeah, im already aware of that
Is quick sheath worth it?
Loving them,keep 'em coming!
Awesome video man, really helpful 😁
In my way to get to HR999 I’ve been troubled by which weapon should I focus on. I’ve mained the GL for LR, the Bow for HR, the CB for GR, and Lance for post GRank. However, for a change of pace, I’m deciding whether I pick the GS or SnS until I get to HR999. Any suggestions?
Love the video, But I and probably other would want to know.
Whats the armor youre using?
Great videos mate. :) Just a heads up! You can transition into horizontal slash (A button) after you do the super Swipe. Leaves you open though lol.
1:58 NO WAY! i always have tought the atack would be stronger if a charged for the longest time possible
With mounting as well, GS is just stupidly overpowered, seriously.
thanks again !
which will be the next tutorial?
I need to know what armors are part of this mixed set! :D Someone tell me please!
I used GS in MH3U (it was my first MH game), I was going to try other weapons in 4U but I might have to remake my GS for that Super Swipe finisher. Love the tutorials
Will we see tutorials on the Gunner weapons, too? Would love to see the bow in 4U
i think he said in his blog that bow or sns will be the next weapon
hope its the bow :x
Dre I hope it's sns, the weapon was changed in this game and it is now a bit more practical.
but muh main wep :(
i didnt get a damn demo code to try trhe bow T.T so i at least want to see it
Oh man, everytime I feel unconfident about fighting a monster, I just bring out my trusty Greatsword and have a fun ride mashing monster face and brutally chopping off tails with that sweet sweet charged attack :D
What about/is it still the case that the charges get +10% attack up per level?
"Welcome to monster hunters most popular weapon"
Me after rises weapon use data got released: you sure about that?
For the longest time I thought that LS was the most overused weapon.
Heck no.
How did you predict the entirety of MH World from so long ago?
Can someone explain how the damage formula works? The numbers in parenthesis..like the 48 from the draw attack..does it mean it does 48% of the weapons raw damage?
Great video! I hope you will do the monster hunter world guide too!
Great video!!
What weapon are you using in the video? Would like to know!! :)
Squish Zod Diablos. Cant remember the actual name, but it’s definitely from diablos
if you master great sword it becomes super powerful in the future
very usefull, but in my opinion blocking is one of the best GS features.
Allow you to fight head to head with large monsters without stepping away.
I rather lose my sharpness than get hit... Thx
Quick question, what do these numbers like "(115)" mean? Is it the percentage of the weapon damage on the attack or...?
Yes
Motion Value.
Which armor set is he using in this video? The skills look so helpful
What Gs is that in the part with the bhanabra?
Look you can sideswipe from idle, and then combo to the X+A combo (Not that you would want to...) LOL
What are these numbers in brackets?
***** I believe percentage of raw. So you see the damage numbers on weapons, but obviously not every attack does that amount of damage.
What Burnie said. A name for it is "Motion Value." Gaijin has covered it in detail somewhere.
(But you've probably figured that out already)
"After a side smack, pull back on the circle pad and hold X" Wtf I do this all the time and it never strong charges. I always have to do one wide swing then charge
Someone know about status GS ? Blast has been a little nerfed and I've heard poison became better
Cool beans. thank you.
BettySweatCakes No problem.
Thank you. Im playing this game this year 2023 😅😂
Psst, you can go into a strong-charge directly after a horizontal swing now by doing forward+A after the horizontal swing.
Don't forget to bring the Critical Draw skill!
Thats not a greatsword thats a dinosaur bone
thnx for the awesome tutorial man
Hey guys, is it possible to stack Fast charge and Ferocity skills? Also, would you prefer expert or tenderizer? Thanks :)
He was using fast charge in this tutorial, so the Lv 1 charge takes a bit of time before coming out as fast gaijin's
Okay, that's cool. Still, fastcharge seems buffed a little and I'm okay with that.
