On #2, Blues players call Bar #2 the "Quick Change" or the "Fast IV."
On #7, Blues players call Bars 7-8 the "Stormy Monday" progression after the Bobby Bland version.
Dang... this covers like half of jazz theory (and basically ALL of the important stuff anyway). Excellent job sir.
Just what I was looking for. That's real music to my ears.
Wow jazz duets...it's all meat and no potatoes. Great topic. Great solos. Great pacing..Thank you for such well thought out lessons.
This is an incredible video
I'll be picking up the PDF for sure.
This is one of those exercises that you can unpack for years and still learn something from it. Amazing work!!
Mitchell Bell same here !
It's worth noting that some of the more complex blues sound even better and more emotive when played slowly, rather than the 'bouncy swing' style used throughout this.
So true!
cliffwhite2812 I feel like everything taught on this channel is worth messing around slow-fast and every feel in between.
Yes Agreed. Now it s our job to play around with the tempos/ arrangements. Thank you for this
I just bought 10 + ESSENTIAL BLUES YOU NEED TO KNOW - tutorial it's beautiful !
A mini Rosetta stone of Blues tutorial videos. Thanks!!!
This has become one of my favorite music videos ever. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this. Anyone thinking about buying this should do it. The solos are chock full of wonderful melodic vocabulary and the pdf with the piano voicings is extremely helpful for learning to hear the harmony. I've been working with it for a month or two and it's really opened up my ears!
Side note: It would be really cool if you could do a similar video on rhythm changes variations.
You are animal! Thanks so much ! Greatings from Uruguay!

Thank you for putting this together. I purchased the PDF.
I know this was a ton of work, but a couple of requests:
1) Please do this same thing with rhythm changes. I will also purchase that.
2) It would be nice to include a list of recordings of songs where those progressions can be found.
Again, thank you much for your work.

Oh my.. My favorite video so far. Thanks! gonna get the pdf..
Love your videos! Greetings from Mexico :)
Brilliant stuff Nick, so very valuable. I played the natural blues for years before dropping the plain G string. This is all going back some years. But I recall being surprised to find that jazz blues changes are actually among the more challenging standard chord progressions. And, maybe this was just me, but I actually had an easier time retaining blues feeling in my jazz playing on non-blues standard changes than on jazz blues changes. I know that sounds weird but I clearly remember thinking that at the time. Anyway, great stuff, cheers.
Well done, that's a real great job!
Amazing lesson !, great job thankyou
i love your channel...your stuff helps me so much
superb material! sos un animal!!!!
Crazy helpful
Wave by Antonio Carlos Jobim is also a good example of a reharmonisation of the Blues. Great video btw!
Yes indeed, good call. Love me some Wave.
From the Bb- to the F7 in #4, I thought I heard a hint of a growl and thought it sounded really good there. Just adds to the funky deliciousness :-)

Thank you!! I've never seen these collated like this before, and it's so incredibly useful to learn and rehearse with. A follow up might be to teach what the various tritone substitutions are substituting for -- eg the turnaround gives a VI7 II7 V7 feel. But then again you *should* get paid for teaching this good so fair enough to leave that in the paid section. : )
I see there are some thumbs down on this video. Why? Because you already know the great knowledge the author presented? Well good for you but for those of us still hungry for the this type of knowledge, or perhaps even a reminder of how it is applied, it is very inspiring. So in the future please give some consideration to those of us who appreciate what this passionate and generous man is sharing to those of us not yet at your level are learning. Otherwise we may see your opinion and pass on viewing. What a shame that would be....
very much appreciated. Less of the brilliant though please. It is just passion and application and quite a few years
Bud Powell rarely gets any recognition for his contributions. Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't he do the same thing for piano that Bird did for the sax and Kenny Clarke for the drums?
He is my favorite piano player still to this day. If you haven't heard him and you like Jazz (especially bebop), check him out asap. Thank me later.
Im so glad this appeared on my suggestions 🤗
You amaze me. Thanks and ever thanks. A question: five seven sharp nine might be more simply notated by 5m7- yes?
Bet you have a reason...
You’re almost right, the sharp 9 IS the same note as the minor third, but a 7#9 chord also has the major third. Rock guitarists sometimes call it the “Hendrix chord”
Outstanding! Excellent job. Any chance you do this for a slow minor blues as well??? 😃😉
Ok ok , I only new about to of this comcepts hahaha
Agradecimientos mr. Nick!.
Any songs based on blues 10? I loved it
Gold!
danke sehr!
awesome! could you do a minor blues version of this please?
When i heard Pat at 0:55 it was like hearing a #9 extension on a smooth XMaj7#11, quit spicy ;)
What about Bud, Monk, Lester and Count? They would be a more classical extension to the name you were mentionning to don't you think?
Who the he'll is Sydney Miles and Coltrane and Brew beck are my holy trinity, other than Ornette Coleman, few others matter.
Did you pull the video where you showed examples of these progressions as used in jazz classics with examples? I cant find it anywhere and its driving me nuts. I think it was called 12 Essential Blues Progressions
yeah i m looking for this video too !
@@maximelescure8329 I made it up to progression number 7 and then they pulled the video.
Great
Lesson for Guitar???great job
You quoted Salt Peanuts on #7 I spotted it ( might not be the only one :) )
Magnífico
The blues 9 is Billie Bounce?
Interesting.
This is great, thanks! But I don't get one thing... why on earth would you show fake music notation at 1:13 ?
Do you offer these progression tracks anywhere?
Does Anyone knows Any Tune For Blues NR. 10 ?
I couldn't find the pdf
Oh you’d have to be hard-up for friends to give this a thumbs down, wouldn’t you :-)
