Here’s How Much Damage A Stun Gun Does To Your Brain And Body | The Human Body

  • Editor’s note: the statements from 0:13 to 0:20 are incorrect. The shock from a stun gun is more similar to that of an electric fence. We apologize and regret the error.
    The effects that stun guns cause to your body are - literally - shocking. Following is a transcript of the video.
    Stun guns don't just affect your body.
    Your brain also takes a hit.
    Stun guns shock you with 50,000 volts of electricity.
    That's 5X stronger than the maximum voltage allowed for electric fences.
    When that much electricity enters your body...
    ... it hijacks your nervous system.
    Normally, nerve cells use electricity to send information from the brain to your body... and vice versa.
    If you stub your toe, for example, neurons fire electric signals to your brain which interprets them as pain.
    But the human body generates at most 100 millivolts.
    When you're shocked with 500,000X that amount...
    ... it's like a power surge to your nerves.
    The shock overwhelms your nervous system, causing your muscles to lock up.
    As a result, you can't move and will likely fall down.
    But mobility isn't the only thing you lose.
    Your brain's ability to process new information is also impaired.
    Plus, you have a harder time remembering that new information later.
    Don't worry, the damage is only temporary.
    Brain function returns to normal after about 1 hour.
    Luckily, your body bounces back much faster.

    I had to experience a taser's effect during law enforcement training so that I knew exactly what I may be inflicting on someone else. It hurts like hell but the instant it stops you feel as if nothing happened other than relief that it stopped. Most people hit with a taser stop being combative after only 5 seconds of being tased. It is one of the most humane law enforcement tools ever created. Before the taser police used batons or a pistol to subdue out of control combative people. The use of a baton can very easily physically damage a person for the rest of their life if it doesn't outright kill them. Unarguably the use of a firearm is usually always fatal. So which would you prefer, a taser that shuts you down for a few seconds and does no real harm or a baton and a firearm that will screw you up for life or kill you?
    The bad rap about tasers is caused by bad police officers who overuse or use when not warranted. Cops guilty of that should be removed from duty.
    What people do not know is that every time a a taser is activated (squeezing the trigger) two things occur. The first is hundreds of tiny discs about the size of a pinhead come out with the lead wires and barbs. These tiny discs go everywhere and are so small it is nearly impossible to locate them all. Each tiny disc has micro printing on them that indicates which taser was used. This will catch officers who lie about using their taser and can show if more than one taser was used. The second is that each taser has a computer chip inside that records the date and time it was fired, how many times fired and how long the duration (trigger held down) of the taser's use. This information from the chip can be downloaded later to determine if it was used properly. Police officers cannot alter the stored information.

      I've been thinking about getting one. I'm 66 and disabled so can't really fight off an attacker. I carry my gun everywhere I go because I'm always alone and would use it if I had to. I never go out after dark but things happen during the day too. This post was very educational for me, I'm getting one!
      Thank you for this information.

    "When that much electricity enters your body"
    voltage isn't an indicator of quantity, Intensity of current is.

    • @stephenfreel6043
      @stephenfreel6043 4 года назад

      Well, current's relationship can be shown via this formula: I=V/R But voltage is actually called electric potential, which shows how much Work (W=F*x) is required to displace positive charge. So electric potential is directly proportional with current.

    This has probably been said in the comments already, but... I will say it again. The weapon that shoots probes out at a target and electrocutes them is NOT called a "Stun Gun". It is called a TASER. Stun Guns at a weapon that you press to the skin in order to electrocute a target.

    • @stardustb390
      @stardustb390 6 лет назад

      John O'Leary No, higher voltage (electron power) allows more current to pass, under 500 volts or more skin resistance begins to break down, when your body resistance is completely bypassed, passing currents up to 15mA can be lethal.

As far as I can tell, there are a myriad of ways to see the sharp end of a pencil ground down dull, but once you reach a certain level of dullness, the regression slows to nearly a halt, and at this point, you can hammer til you stammer without much further loss, and still get a lot of use out of the pencil.

    Come to think of it, in the moments following, the person would likely say just about anything to get the sensory overload to stop.

All it did was feel like I hit my funny bone for about 10 minutes. Then I ran after him, and caught him, grabbed the stun gun and I shocked him with it three times while I said "how do you like it huh?". We're still good friends to this day. It sure wasn't enough of a shock to make me fall out or incapacitate me at all. Like I said it felt like I hit my funny bone, that was about it. Ten minutes later totally back to normal.

    How commenting usually works.
    1.Person says something smart
    2.Reader sees offence in joke and gets butthurt.
    3.Reader throws random adjectives and vulgarities at person(Usually trump-tards)
    4.Person says it's just a joke and that he didn't mean to start an argument
    5.Rinse and repeat.

      I laughed at this, but I still would like to point out that we use "butthurt" way too often online assuming that anytime someone disagrees and points out potential problems, they must be offended and butthurt. Ironically, this comment might seem like I'm offended because I'm doing exactly what I said labels people as "offended and butthurt."
      I guess you can label me as number two. Also, I would like to point out that number 3 is often (from my point of view) a different reader replying to the reader in number 2.

    This is an excellent tool for police officers, as it gives them an alternative option to firearms outside of physical range, and rarely result in real injury. And they're good at what they do.

      I don't call two feet away from from someone at their front door "out of range" and after getting TAZED in my sternum, (I thought I'd been shot with their 9 mm.) The second barb hit me below my waist and dropped me Then they proceeded to kick my rig cage in from both sides, while yelling "quit resisting."
      No, @mrlastarbitater the law enforcement is definitely extremely good at what they do to one house owner against eight deputies and taxing the man and then cracking his ribs with their boots.

      The electrons go from the point of insertion in a wave.When they find a dead end ,for example your fingers, they will turn to a different direction.After a couple of dead ends they will eventually leave your body through your feet. And keep in mind there a lot of electrons and they move at the speed of light.

    TASERs are also very different from conventional stunguns. Stunguns are normally pain weapons. TASERs are not. They physically override nerve impulses.

    Since I have mild Cerebral Palsy, I guess if I got shot with a Stun Gun/ Tazer Gun, I guess if the shock came to my brain, since Cerebral Palsy is a brain disorder, I guess this might shock the Cerebral Palsy away

    There most likely is a trace amount of permanent brain damage after each hit, may beat supersonic lead slugs in terms of damage reduction but still needs to be replaced with something else once again, tasers also damage parts of the ❤.

  • @sephirofl3503
    @sephirofl3503 7 лет назад +1

    The damage is only temporary? Are there any scientific corroborations of this claim? To the best of my knowledge, there are no comprehensive studies on how excessive electrical currents effect human nervous systems. Isn't it entirely possible that the electricity discharged by tasers may cause permanent neurological damage, which may result in a higher susceptibility to develop neurodegenerative diseases? That being said, shouldn't it be made clear that, as of yet, we are unaware of the potential long-term neurological damage from tasers?
