Original V-MODA M-100 Review: djbooth.net/pr...
V-MODA has just released their new professional over-the-ear DJ headphones called the "M-100 Master". This is the latest edition of the V-MODA M-100's that we reviewed a full 7 years ago! The changes to the new edition include better sound from the all-new 50mm drivers and extended ear cushions with better materials, comfort, and isolation. The new M-100 Master headband is also made of leather which helps with comfort and durability. Check out our review video and summary to see if the new V-MODA M-100 Master headphones is the new monitoring solution for your own DJ setup.
I have the new Master M-100’s which replaced my original (and broken) M-100’s. I also have the first gen Crossfade Wireless. I play my music via CD quality lossless or MQA audio via Tidal using a Dragonfly Black. After a few days of listening, these new Master’s sound fantastic and more “refined” than the Crossfade’s and the original M-100’s. Not a night and day difference, but certainly improved. Recommended (especially since I got 50% off trading in my broken M-100’s).
Did you get the Immortal exchange with the Masters?
Al Yeska Yes - so $125 + $20 for the XL pads.
can i just broke mine and get that 50% discount? 😆
@@jananaroy1 to get the coupon, you snip the wires at the cup and send the picture of disabling damages. Then they mail you the coupon
@@alyeska4226 just cut the wire that connect the earcup to the headband? are you sure?
Just got my M-100 Master, waiting for it to be delivered :D
@SUB ZER0 Amazing quality, really good stuff. I acctually started to use them at the studio, not only for DJing. They hurt the ears a bit if you keep them on too much time, but aside from that, go for it
Pre ordered the V-MODA M-100 Master, Thanks.
Thanks for your first preview on these. Got them a few days ago love them. Better bass clearer sound then the m100
really high quality videos and review bro, new subscriber here
Thank you!!!
I bought the m100s this week in the UK to DJ with and the sound is amazing. I love that they're flatter than the new. Kind of like hd25s but with more heightened top and bottom. But not exaggerated. Was a little disappointed in the master. For the price I paid I think I'll buy another pair. After burn in they're as good as the hd25s and the design is amazing. Love them!!!
Are they better than beats
@@nathanfeely4042 Why ask at this point?
I've been a musician for 35 years. I play several instruments, including the tuba. A tuba does not sound like a tuba on Beats headphones. It sounds fake and terrible. Same with the rest of the low end. It might not matter much with electronic bass, but it is still distorted.
In other words, you are not hearing the music as it was intended to be heard.
It's like putting ketchup on everything you eat. Everything will taste like ketchup. Maybe some other flavors will get through, but you will mostly be tasting ketchup. That gets old after awhile.
But that's not the only problem. Artificially boosted bass drowns out the mids and highs. You will not hear those accurately, either. Detail will get swamped and it ruins the overall flavor of the sound.
This is where human biology comes into it. Most people listen for deep bass and sparkly highs when they evaluate headphones and speakers. Unfortunately, the human animal isn't really tuned to evaluate those. Humans are hardwired for the mids. That might seem counterintuitive, but what sounds are in the mids? The human voice.
We are hardwired to respond to the human voice more than a kettle drum. That's where our ears are the most sensitive and our brains pay extremely close attention to voices. When you have artificially boosted bass smearing human voices, it doesn't sound good. It goes against human nature.
When I evaluate headphones and speakers I play a few kinds of music. Male and female voices are huge. If a headphone or speaker can't get k.d. lang or Elvis Costello right, something is wrong. I also listen to piano pieces because it's tough to get the entire range of a piano right. Also, the range of a piano usually falls across a crossover point in a speaker, so you can hear whether the designer got the crossover right and how well the drivers integrate. Then I listen to my two favorite instruments, the tuba and the bass clarinet, because I play those and know how they sound. If a headphone or speaker gets all of those right, they get a thumbs up and I often buy them.
The Beats fail miserably at all of these tests. They don't get a single thing right. I cannot recommend them.
Further, Beats have a lousy build quality and are dramatically overpriced considering the materials and labor. They probably don't cost more than $20 or $25 to make. The rest is profit. Do you want to give them that much profit? For something that can't even meet the basic tests for sounding good? Don't throw away your money.
Great content as always buddy
Thanks!
Always great reviews mate. How would these hold up against the Pioneer HDJ-X10's?
Very similar actually. They both have that 3D soundstage feel to them but the X10's may do it just a bit better... The M-100's feel better on my head overall though...
@@RealDJblaze cheers for the reply man. That helps. Struggling to choose between them still though.
How are these for edm and watching action movies?
My HDJ-2000s broke on me so I’m looking for something to replace them as my everyday headphone. You definitely sold me on trying out the Vmoda 🎧 especially considering they are priced around $150 less than Pioneer’s latest iteration of their flagship DJ headphone the HDJ-X10.
You won't regret it!
After almost a decade sporting the OG Crossfade (not the M-100) daily, part of the metal headband finally snapped, shortly followed by the left speaker shorting out. While I'm not a DJ, sound is still very important to what I do, so I broke down and ordered the M-100 Master. I have high hopes, but we'll see if it was a worthy purchase when they arrive in the next day or so!
Hey. How are they?
@@starlightcammy7675 So far, they're working perfectly! My great dane knocked them off my desk once, and the right earpiece popped off the headband, but it was fairly easy to pop it back on (like my last pair). I got a cover for the band to protect the pleather from my wear and tear, so it's still in excellent condition, too.
Great review! Thanks!!!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks mate.. just ordered 👍
Hey man, thanks for the quality vids! Im interested in a new pair of headphone. I have now the old M100 [and i completely in love with them], and the native choice is to go for the new Master. but recently i see all that hype around the Sony WH1000XM3, and i wanna ask how the two compare?
I don't know Sony headphones, so I cannot compare the two, but the V-MODA's are sick... You can't go wrong with a pair of these...
good review .....what kind of camera and mic are you using.
I'm using a Panasonic 4K camera and a Sennheiser Mic... Not sure on the model numbers though....
@@RealDJblaze Nice.... your videos are excellent quality!! And good content, keep em comin
How is the isolation on them? I like to feel a bit isolated and protect my ears in the loud club while i focus on my mix.
Isolation is VERY good on all the V-MODA over the ear models. Perfect for the club environment.
Are the new CUPS like the XL cups you can get for the original M-100?
No, they are different. They are more shallow and more comfortable with better material and memory foam...
Thank you for the response & the review, keep it up!
Man HDJ-X10's or these? This my first pair of headphones ever purchased and I'm gonna be using them for gigs as well as for production. Any feedback appreciated!
X10's are DOPE, but these are even better in my opinion. I'd go with these easily!
I really like these headphones my only gripe is for the price and the fact that they are marketing these toward DJ use I don’t understand why they wouldn’t include the coiled quarter inch cable only including the cell phone cable sort of seems counterproductive or could be construed as being cheap but that’s just my two cents not a dealbreaker but sort of disappointing
Do the crossfade 2 wireless sound better than the m-100? It's weird because I find reviews saying that the m100 are the best sounding headphones you can buy for wired, but that doesn't go for the crossfade 2 which are wireless. Mind telling me which one is better? Thanks Kareem!
The M-100 Master sound almost identical to the Wireless 2... The regular M-100's sound different when compared to these M-100 Masters...
@@RealDJblaze oh so do the regular m 100 sound better or worse than the crossfade 2 wireless?
How is it that my m100's faux leather headband frays like crazy after a few years of occasional use, yet yours look brand new.
I've been using mine for years and they are still perfect... But my crossfade original series was flaking... so what I did was scrape it all off and you are left with a grey mesh material that actually looks great! So I would say scrape it all off and you'll be happy with the results...
Do you need the xl cushions or are the new ones good enough?
These are better than the XL cushions. Not as deep as XL, but perfect to go over the whole ear and the memory foam is way softer than the XL cushions.
Depends on the size of your ears. The stock pads are certainly larger than the originals, but they are still smaller than the XL’s. If you have a big melon like me, buy the XL’s.
Just got them in the mail. Picked up a cheap bt adapter to use with my phone and they sound great. Was using them with my mixer yesterday and I'm pleasantly surprised. My first v moda headphones. I'm gonna try the xl pads cause my ears get fatigued after 2-3 hours.
Question for you.. I always loved the original m-100 sound, but got the Pioneer HDJ-2000MK2 headphones because of the swivel. But I always wished I had gotten the M-100s because of the sound (I liked the M-100 sound a lot better than the Pioneers). Now with the Master version of the M-100, would you recommend I get the Masters or the Original?
Definitely the masters for superior sound quality and even deeper bass!
your both morons. look at the sound signature graphs on google between the m100 and masters.
m100's had too much bass. and the masters fixed it. with a much more flat sound, but they have recessed treble
i mostly listen to rock and jazz, would these headphones be really good for it? i currently own sennheiser momentum 2
These would sound excellent for that type of music. Really a 3D soundstage feel to these...
I just got mine supper juiced but when i put on some beat it sounded nothing special bass was not there. Im wondering do i need to do something burn em in, or did i get defected ones, do i need a special app to adjust it? Any advice please let me know
hi did they got a silent noise when no sound is playing?
How resilient do you gauge the female jack of the headphone? The original lasted me one year with frequent removal of the cord. I now only remove the cord when the source Male needs replacement. I go through the things every other month.
Never had an issue with the female jack on the headphones on any V-MODA product and I still have my LP2's from YEARS ago... I use them daily at the office actually...
I used to pack them up just about every day. I'd say the female jack it'sa has a lifetime of 400-500 plug n' pulls and then the wear begins to short in that ear. Immortal Life, thank goodness.
Hey Kareem, just curious, on the original m100s I was able to use a dual cable ( R + L into jack ) however on the masters I can't seem to use the same cable as only 1 side will work if I do this ( only R or L depending where the cable is plugged into ), any idea why this is the case? I can use the cable provided by v moda and just plug into 1 side without any issues but a dual cable into jack wouldn't work as compared to the original m100's.
That's strange but I think the M-100 Masters didn't come with that share-play cable so that would make sense that it doesn't work with it.
@@RealDJblaze ah ok, yeah that definitely makes sense and would explain why it works on the originals but not on the masters. Reply appreciate it Kareem, you dont think the headphones can get damaged if testing the dual cable on masters do you? They seem to sound ok after I switched back to the Vmoda cable but this is certainly always a worry
My Allen and heath xd 53s just broke 😭😭😭. Think I might pick these up.
Go for it!
Hi guys, between these v-moda and the senn momentum 3 which you think is better in terms of quality sound? Thanks a lot
I have not used the Momentum 3 before, but I used the other Momentum versions. For me, the V-Moda Masters sound and feel better made...
i have the Crossfade Wireless 1st gen model, which is a "refined M100 driver" a newer model than the M100. I dont ever use the wireless. But htey sound awesome over wired. I wonder how this M100M compares in sound signature to the model i have.
The M100 Master sounds way different from the M100 original. They have a more 3D soundstage to them and sound more crisp. They also have very deep bass as well. I like them better personally.
@@RealDJblaze that was pretty much what most had said when they compared the m100 to the crossfade wireless gen 1. Since they are the exact same driver just slightly tweaked. But it was somewhat noticeable improvement most noted. I guess the m100 Master is a completely different driver then?
Any chance of a reloop elite review anytime soon?
yeah, as soon as they send me a new one in the mail! Should be soon though.
I bought the crossfade 2 wireless codex a month ago and I love them but I wnat another set with a little more bass. I use to have the m100s but wonder if these are worth it
The bass on these are comparable to the Wireless 2's but the bass is deeper and punches better than the original M-100's by far...
Where do I order the custom shield?
V-MODA direct website.
would you recommend an amp for these? im not sure if its needed but i do want more volume
Any amp will do... check out the VAMP by V-MODA...
Is it suitable for basshead? Or codex 2 is better?
DarkPa1adin these have the same bass as the codex 2...
What has more bass, The M100 originals, M100 Master or the Crossfade Wireless 2 Codex Edition? What are the best ones out of the ones i mentioned? Thanks.
The M100 original has the least amount of Bass. The new M100 Master and Crossfade 2 Codex sound almost identical... Get the M100's if you don't need bluetooth.
@@RealDJblaze hmm ok. I heard original M100 had more bass..
Every M100 I've owned gets loose screws. Seven years ago, VModa used to send a packet of 20 extra screws.
Do the Master get loose from using click fold, or from opening back one ear?
Mine never got loose but that is an easy fix if all you have to do is tighten it....
I have the same problem after 3 years of hard use
The screws strip out really easy. Avoid overtighten
I know this is an old comment but you can consider using threadlocker with metal to metal threads.
Hey fam, I have a fat head. Like a 7 3/4 fitted hat. Will this crush my skull? LP2 are very uncomfortable without breaking them in
They are built very similarly so I would think they are going to fit almost the same as well...
Sound-wise how do the Crossfade M100 Master compare to the Crossfade Wireless 2 Codex?
The sound is VERY similar for both of these models... It's like they shaped the sound of the M100 Master to what the Crossfade Wireless 2 Codex sound like without the bluetooth...
DJBooth Pro Audio good looks; currently debating whether to use the immortal program on my og M100s, any recommendations? Should I wait to use it a lil more?
If you want a slightly leaner and tighter bass than the orig M100, then the Master will do that.
The new bass on m100 master is more physical? The bass slam harder? Or the m100 master only change the bass quantity?
Yes it definitely does.
DJBooth Pro Audio but the diference is huge?
@@ACM1000000PT Going from a 40mm diaphragm to a 50mm diaphragm, yeah, you're gonna notice it 👍
TheArpage both have 50mm drivers.
The original's bass sounds more woofy most of the time, but when you spend more time with the Master, the superiority of detail and depth comes through.
the sound of the master is better than the wireless 2 codex ou it's the same?
I wouldn't say they are the same but they are VERY similar in sound.
I don't know if the Codex has the new Roland drivers or not. Maybe v-moda could answer at their website.
sennheiser 58x open back or v moda m200 for gaming?
Never get open back for gaming... V-Moda M100 Master FTW
Can anyone tell me what difference does the m-100 master have with the m-100? I have never put on a v fashion headset and they talk a lot about the discomfort of the earmuffs. Do you recommend the m-100 master in 2020 or another headset? dj use
This review will tell you the difference... Watch the whole thing and you will hear... M-100 Master are my go-to headphones for DJ use above all others...
Ok thank you and sorry I'm from native Spanish language and I don't understand much English. I understand more written lmao
How do they compare to Sennheiser HD25?
I feel these are better than the HD25 in every category. They are louder and have more bass by far. They also are over the ear which is better on my ears personally...
DJBooth Pro Audio Martin Garrix uses them. So they must be good. Gareth Emery uses HD25. 👍
does this headphone closed back? and how about bass
The bass is really vibrant and responsive with a bit of rumble to it and these headphones are closed-back...
@@RealDJblaze I have sennheser HD 280 Pro but ist;s liner and very flat sound does v-moda master like this or v-moda more bass?
Do these offer a significant audio upgrade compared to the ATH-M50x?
So it depends what you mean by upgrade... If you want more booming bass and louder highs, then go for the ATH-M50X... If you want a truly flat sound like what people who are making music need, then this would be an upgrade... Thanks.
Is m100 wireless?
No they are not... Crossfade Wireless 2 for that...
Thanks mate
Any different between the wire and wireless version in terms of sound quality?
Not really to my ears unless you are using files that take advantage of the wireless Codecs in the wireless headphones version.
M100 master or codex? 🙄
M-100s if you don't need the wireless option or the Codex addition if you do! Pretty simple really...
@@RealDJblaze well when you put it tha way... I've had LP2s for years now I'm just finding it hard to make the first step. 😅
So I take it that they both sound just as good as eacher..
@Nas that's the only doubt I'm having as well! Do lemme know which ones did you go for! Thanks
Uncomfortable and hurt my ears even with the xl earcups.
You know, depending on the shape of your head and the size your mileage will vary with the comfort... Thanks for your comment.
if only they were bluetooth
I have the Wireless-2 Codex and this M100 Master. For portable listening the Codex is good, but when I want the most perfect detail, the Master is it.
Wireless 2's are it!
@@RealDJblaze Hi, how are you? Could you tel me if there is any diference in sound quality between the M-100 Master and the Crossfade 2 Wireless Codex? which has the best sound? I don't care about having bluetooth connectivity.
The freq. response is about the same, but the Master has more detail, which is more noticed in the bass.
