JAPAN’s Meatballs are BETTER than IKEA’s

- Hey guys! Today we're back with one of my favourite childhood dishes, meatballs! After being in Japan for over 30 years and trying some of the finest foods around, I still miss my mother's homemade meatballs. So we headed to Shirokane Yazawa Seinikuten in Roppongi, which serves some of the most delicious meat in Tokyo. From beer sausages and curry bread, to the most juicy meatball I have ever had, sit back, relax and enjoy this trip down memory lane!

Shoot, quoting Bourdain for how good something is. I want to go there.
It’s a great little place for sure
I like how you were experiencing some enlightenment after eating something so tasty. That's what I love about Japanese cuisine. It's good to know we have Japanese markets and places to go to here in Las Vegas.
I wonder sometimes if Chris Broad is pulling his hair out for not discovering some of the places you've eaten out there.
Wow Las Vegas! It’s more than 10 years since I was last there but what a community we have created here, TOMODACHI from all over the world 🌎
Nick: so Kloster means monastery, so it likely says "Alpirsbacher Monastery Brewers". Weizen Hefe Hell means "Wheat Yeast Light" referring to the type of light brew made from wheat and yeast. 🤓 GenieBen! (Enjoy!)
Well explained! One thing which really drives me crazy at watching it.... it's the wrong glass in which the beer is served😅
German words on the knife, german beer, german weißwurst, bierwurst.
Rare to see so much german stuff at once :D
Happy days
LMAO at the Queen acapella at the end. That's a truly happy Samurai 👍😂
Thanks for mentioning Anthony Bourdain. I miss his show terribly....
Me too TOMODACHI
german beer, Sausage and Meatballs, that very much remind me of german Frikadellen. Why does this remind me more of Germany than Japan xD
Everything looks really good!
(Btw. If you are interested: The beer brand is Klosterbräu, it's a Wheat (Weizen) beer with light yeast (Hefe hell)
Thanks for the great research, we are learning together
Yeah! Also the Knife is made by "Zwilling" (as you can see from their logo on there), a World Famous Knife Manufacturer in Solingen Germany and also one of the worlds best Manufacturers for Knifes. They seem to have a Factory in Japan too.
But that is no Surprise, when you look at the traditional, Bavarian Jacket, Mr. Yazawa wears.
As a German myself i would say, at least in looks, these "Weißwürschtl" and "Frikadellen" or "Fleischpflanzerl" (translated: Meatplanties) are German approved 👍
Also i wouldn't wonder if Mr. Yazawa was to Germany, to learn from a German Butcher here.
But traditionally the "Weißwurst" is eaten with some special sweet Mustard. With it, they are so good. You should definitely try some with it
I also have to say you do speak German pretty good. It wasn't quite enough to say that generally, but the Sentences you did say, sounded very clean and well pronounced ☺
@@madhatterdo5458 He was raised in Denmark. His father is Greek. His mother is Danish.
Those aren't meatballs they are hamburg steaks... or salsbury steaks dude just got some bad info, he even used half the correct term for them in japanese.
@@thomgizziz If you want it THAT correctly these are Frikadellen or Buletten.
That's what they were called even before German immigrants brought them to America and threw them on Toast or to Japan. But yes "Meatball" would be something different but they both are made of minced Beef and as long as people understand, what you mean (cause they see it with their own eyes) it doesn't really matter, if the 100% correct Words in every Language are used. But for "Erbsenzähler" you are right 😜
8:55 oh hellz yeah!
You can never go wrong with meatballs!
You got that right
I've watched all your videos damn that "ITADAKIMASU" and "Hmmm" always gets me 😂...social anxiety is scared of Nicholas💀
LOL 😂 I swear it came naturally the first time and then it just stuck. Now if I don’t include it I sure will know about it from the TOMODACHI
So last time I was so distracted by the suit, that I didn't notice that Nicholas's beard has become massive. The junk food master already had an imposing appearance, but the beard upped it by several points.
The Hamburger curry bun is going in the list of things to grab. The shop has been added to Google maps.
Also, my respect goes out to the guy (cameraman?) whom we could see throughout the entire video in the window reflection. Such self restraint he shows, while Nicholas just feasts in delicious things. If it were me I would have been standing there with food in hand while slacking in regards to the camera work. Good man. Hope he got something nice after we standing there for who knows how long. Considering it is a nearly 17 minute video, various takes, at least 1 too 2 hours? Respect.
LoL Paul is very professional when he works. But we had a good party after all was wrapped up
Nick, you seem to have Enjoyed yourself IMMENSELY in this video 😃 We're all very happy for you ☺👍 Was AWESOME to see a master chef serve you something yummy every time you called 😁
that curry pan hamburg looks delicious
It’s so good
lmao i love your vids. you went from a goofy and quirky new guy on the block, to god tier content creator
Dude this is a great comment. Really makes me motivated to go for the longer content. Thanks for hanging around and supporting my channel TOMODACHI
This was the video that made me subscribe to your channel last year. Now I've watched every video you have uploaded and it's been very interesting to follow you around Japan and get to see their food and culture. I hope I get to visit Japan someday. Thank you.
Thank you so much TOMODACHI it’s been quite the journey for the last two years with the channel and it never gets old to read the comments and seeing the community growing. Feel free to share with your friends and family Osu
I quite like how they're doing German inspired stuff down there. Good stuff.
Mmmmm! Hamburg Meatballs!!??!?!?! Oh my goodness! Now...I have to admit; living in the Philly area, I will not have these yummy treats anytime soon...So, I am slightly upset that I watched tis video while hungry! Ha haa ha! Thank you TOMODASHI!!!
You are welcome. Stay tuned for some live shows coming up where you can learn to make your own stuff. Has not yet been announced
@@JunkFoodJapan Thank you for the heads up !
13:38 I would be at a loss of words too, Nic-san, haha, UMAI as always!
awesome video, I'm salivating already!
I was walking around Roppongi 4 days ago and saw the Gori Gori burger sign. I was actually looking for something else to eat but then, had to stop there... great recommendation Nick!😊
Hey! That’s awesome ! Did you talk to the owner about it?
@@JunkFoodJapan Yep. I told him when I left that I saw him on JFJ ;-)
BooooM
Yes, I definitely slammed my hands together 👏🏼 and yelled, “itadakimasu” 😹
Nice one TOMODACHI
That ending was fantastic, Chris should record his next song with nick
LMFAO 🤣 now that would be the dream
If you ever make it to Pittsburgh in the US, you need to try a Pittsburgh steak salad. Tossed salad topped with steak, fries, and cheese.
OMG NOW I’M HUNGRY
“GODDAMN THAT IS GOOD!” ❤So awesome to see you find the best of the best after so many years and so many Curry Pan!!! Amazing video!!!
UMMAAII!!!! 🤤
You got that right TOMODACHI
2:13 omg that watch is so beautiful
LOL 😂 I arm balled it
That was the prettiest salad I've ever seen. It never ceases to amaze me how PRETTY food is in Japan. Just top tier. ❤
BooooM
Nick, the "burnt" meat is called caramelization. Smash burgers maximizes the taste of this caramelization effect.
Mmmm mmm mmm 😋
We appreciate your insights. They're concise and straightforward.
Thank you. It makes it all worth it
That Curry Pan made me jealous. Enjoy it for me, Nic.
I did! TOMODACHI
It's so simple in it's simplicity 🤣 I'm so hungry right now
Sometimes simple is just better
the guy watching you from the street, caught in the reflection, is cracking me up. lol nice video! the food looks delicious!
or is that your cameraman. either way, entertaining!
Yeah that was Paul
13:13 your mouth water broke! Time to eat.
No German mustard? Oh that is right, you're in Japan! Awesome!
LoL 😂
That food looks so good ! Great video made me hungry!
10.51 very Mark Wiens reaction....brilliant!
Would love to collab with a Master like Mark
It's such a treat to have these new videos being release so close together, thank you so much for your hard work on them.
Glad you like them! It makes it all worth it
Great video, as usual! Thanks for sharing. I want some Japanese hamburg meatballs now!
BooooM TOMODACHI
Man, my mouth is watering from all those succulent meats 🤤
I have food envy... the sausages looked great but that curry pan 😮😮😮❤. I am definitely mostly a carnivore, meat and potatoes are my comfort foods... and there’s nothing like perfectly seasoned and cooked meat.
Your videos always make me hungry.:)
BooooM
Watching this at 1:30 in the morning was a bad idea, because now I REALLY want some meatballs and curry pan. ;)
LoL I love these comments. But yes it’s a bad idea watching this show late at night
mm curry bread with a meatball now thats a protein snack!
That truly looked so delicious. I'm very hungry now haha... 😂
It was soooo good UMAI
@@JunkFoodJapan So glad you enjoyed it. I love sausages and meatballs. I have to visit that place when I come over! Have a great one Nic!
Dude so hungry looking at this - I'm having a beer waiting on the pasta and sausage to be done. Salivating Homer style! And as usual, so bloody entertaining. Well done as usual Nic!
I hope your pasta was amazing TOMODACHI
This looks like my kind of food! Great video Nick 😊
A swedish honey bun once ate my sausage and meatballs for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Have no idea what that means but it sounds like a great day!
😮 Wow! I gotta get to Japan, the meats looks awesome! I especially love sausage 😍
That all looked really good especially the curry pan.
It was so good
Meat looks amazing😊, wanna try on the next trip for sure!
Wow.. been watching some your vids man and it's great. Subarashī....❤
Tan k you so much and welcome to the channel TOMODACHI
So super glad I found your channel! I love your energy level!
And you are very welcome here TOMODACHI feel free to share with your friends and family
Mahlzeit! Danke für die Grüße! Liebe Grüße aus Deutschland zurück nach Japan!
Zur Weißwurst passt auch hervorragend süßer Senf und Brezel.
Thank you for the amazing content.
Greetings for sure my German TOMODACHI
Simple grub can be the best grub. Especially when the ingredients are pretty top notch!
Even though I'm dutch, when we bbq, i always buy some Thuringer, Krakauer or weißwurst...Germans know their sausages
This they surely do, but now I want to try some Thuringer and kraken’s ups the krakauer’s
Nic keep up the great videos.
I will
Always love your energy btw! ❤
BooooM TOMODACHI
Love waking up to a new JFJ video!~ Keep up the great work. Bet those sausages had a nice snap to em.
Especially the beer sausage
Was that Queen or Danzig? 😉 You are so enthused while eating and you can tell you truly enjoy the food! While I was in Kobe a few years back, I had a Danish Hot Dog at Copenhagen Suma Hot Dogs. コペンハーゲン. I know you have a European back ground and i thought you would appreciate Japans only Danish restaurant. Easy to find, it's right in front of the JR Suma Rail Station.
There used to be one in Roppongi called Daisy and one in Yokohama I forget the name. But I didn’t know about this place I need to investigate for sure. Thanks for sharing TOMODACHI
Once again THANK YOU for sharing! 🙏 You're a good, strong, wise and handsome young man Nick; dare I say even More handsome without the facial hair 😉👍 But that's your call.
Everyone has their opinion but this year is a big beard year for me
@@JunkFoodJapan no worries buddy! 😄👍 Do your thing! Just curious if we'll soon see someone who 'closely resembles' you picking up a guitar and reviving ZZ Top band songs OR perhaps dressing as Santa for local schools later this year.. 😅🤣😂
LMFAO 🤣 I remember ZZ Top great band
That would have been good one for a Cathy Cat team up.
I think we would be a great team for crushing good stuff
As a german it was cute to hear you speaking german 😃😊
Danke TOMODACHI
Your channel is the best!!
Wow, thanks! Really appreciate it TOMODACHI
Great energy & video content! Yummy!! 😊
Lol - good view in reflection on the glass of your camera operator, camera & tripod.
Nothing slips past you TOMODACHI’s lol 😂
Was it Chris? 😂
No it was Paul
Dear god, those savages served you no sweet mustard with the Weißwurst. And a non-bavarian white beer. Thankfully I'm not Bavarian, but from Baden-Württemberg, just like that Beer, so I kinda approve. Their meatball game is definitely up there, though.
I actually wanted to try it all as was made so not to kill the game with condiments, it was all top notch
@@JunkFoodJapan I'd recommend them with the works - mustard complements it really well, it adds another dimension to the usually slightly bland taste, and it cuts through the fattiness and makes it a less cloying experience. And then grab a pretzel and your Weizen and you've got yourself a nice breakfast. Usual way to eat them is to grab them by hand, dip them in the mustard, and then suck them out of the skin, by the way.
Mmmm mmmm mmm
I don’t need coffee at 8am to wake me up, I just need to tune into your vids and I’m all perked up! Can’t wait to check this place out ❤❤❤
Also as a side note, I’m looking to visit a CrossFit or Kickboxing gym in Japan, do you have a recommendation?! Thank you.
Well! Of course my gym CrossFit Nishi Azabu for your CrossFit fix. And then Ebisu Bungeling Bay for kickboxing. Thank you for tagging along on my hobby’s
Ohh, what's your favorite German beer, Nic? Good eats and good meats in this episode!
I like most beers 🍺 as long as they are big and cold
For some odd reason it’s listed as SALUMERIA ARTIGIANA Edasawa on Google Maps; couldn’t find it until doing a general search for butcher shops in the neighborhood
Yeah I think we got that fixed now
@@JunkFoodJapan Yup, I submitted the correction; good to see it got accepted already!
Nice one ☝️
Love the Abe Lincoln beard
This is definitely going on my To Do list, if nothing just to get the same out of body experience as Nic 16:27
But also: at what point does a flattened meatball become a patty? 😂
It’s how they mix it. It’s made with flower, onion and egg. It’s a meatball for sure
now imagine the burger in the hamburger curry bun having a sof) boiled egg in it like we here in the netherlands call a "gehaktbal kiekeboe" (or scotch egg in the anglosphere)
that would be some insane foo recursion :D
OK TOMODACHI you just got me hungry
Anyone else noticed the guy hanging out in the background you can see reflecting off of the glass door?
A lot of people did! There were two. The camera Man and a friend
Another one I missed! Roppongi is another place I don't go to that often. I think I've been there a couple of times and it makes me feel poor. :) Last time I went, I met my old school buddy who made a bunch of money in Japan doing motivational speaking. But this makes me think I should just spend some money at that meat shop!
It’s worth it. But did you see the British food with Doc. Chris Broad video ? That’s all in Roppongi
@@JunkFoodJapan I'll be there next week! I figure we'll be in Roppongi at least once.
Happy Hunting!
You know Hambagu are always compared to frikadeller but to me they've always reminded me more of karbonader/krebinetter. Karbonader might be breaded but the inner texture, that very juicy somewhat loose texture is way more similar to hambagu than frikadeller. Frikadeller tend to be a bit drier and have a firmer texture. I think it is mostly just the size that makes the difference but then again what is a karbonade but a big breaded frikadelle :P All this talk of meatballs is making me crave my moms greek inspired frikadeller tho, plenty of herbs and feta cheese in the frikadeller and maybe some tzatziki on the side
Now that sounds good
I looked it up what Hefe weizen (Hell) means - Being very gassy also means it is difficult to drink more than one or two in a single session.
I only had that one and it was just enough actually so they are spot on
Got to say I'm missing that eco on all them mmmmmms
Well...that made me hungry.
Mission accomplished then
Curry bread looked really good. Not something that is easy to find outside of Japan.
It’s soooo goooood
Can get them from local japanese bakery and caafe here I'm auckland New Zealand.
the kamera guy checking his phone there at the end xD oh poor thing.
always fun seeing your vids Nick ^^
(i know i havent DM'ed you yet there is a reason for it, you'll find out soon)
Hit me up TOMODACHI I am on Instagram Twitter Facebook and TikTok these days. Not in that order but I am out there these days
Yumm!
Nick san another great vid! If we come to the place, can we actually eat there or is it a take away only?
They are planning on having tables set up outside, inspired by Junk Food Japan. But the curry pan Hamburg is just a pick up and eat kinda thing.
@@JunkFoodJapan Thank you Good Sir!
I crave for that Curry pan hamburger!
But as a German, better as a Bavarian, I refuse to believe that these white sausages are nearly as good as from any local bavarian butcher 😉
Junk Food Japan would like to investigate that one day
@@JunkFoodJapan I would be happy to assist and make a preselection 😉
By the way, Weissbier is important for such an investigation. 😁
that goes without saying TOMODACHI
Is there a ‘about me video’ on this channel? New and interest to learn more about nicks story
Welcome TOMODACHI if you back to episode one there is a very brief version of who I am. Or you can search my Name on RUclips and pretty much anywhere I guess? The first episode of the channel is the BlackCows WAGYU burger show.
Things to search for:
Blue Eyed Samurai Nicholas Pettas
Nicholas Pettas
Samurai Spirit NHK
Imagine Nation NHK
The Tokyo Show
Enjoy. :)
the Sausages are approved.
R.i.p Anthony Bourdaine, i miss him so damn much
Yes me too, he was a larger than life persona that will always be remembered
I absolutely love this channel, but I can barely sit through a video because I always end up hungry as hell. 🤣 Not ideal for a kid trying to lose weight and eat healthier!
Just keep moving and you’ll loose the extra weight. If you get hungry drink more water. But thank you for your comment
Seeing your enjoyment totally sold me on anything that shop could provide
If I ever manage to get to Japan that shop is on my bucket list.
Great video :)
Thank you TOMODACHI
The beard really suits you!
Thanks TOMODACHI
Fork and knife 🍴🍴🍴
You like the TORIKO reference?
@@JunkFoodJapan definitely did not expect it, but was fun in the moment ☺️
Great video.i love it. But the microphone sound is a little high pitch.
Will be careful next time
that curry -pan looks like a south african "vetkoek" ( any mince used ) ...... or the hindustan "bara" ( no cow mince ) ! except the meats are offcourse different , but looks the same !
Would love to investigate
@@JunkFoodJapan just look up the dishes , and then see if its the same ........ vertkoek is mincemeat with herbs and curry , breadball deepfried , cut open and then filled with the mince .......... bara is the same but then filled with mince ( precooked IDK ) before it gets deepfried ! 🙂 bare or with chutney or sambal ( you know sambal is hot , right ? ) ......but tastes great !
Now I’m hungry 🤤
@@JunkFoodJapan well , as soon my South african wife makes these , me too ! 😁 .......... watching back logs of your vids ...... great that i see you with a lott of known vloggers in japan ........ chris , riotero , connor , joey ...... you do make great content !
I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the camera guy in the reflection is Chris Broad. Was that him? I know you are friends and Chris now lives in Tokyo
Nope that was Paul. Dr. Broad doesn’t have time to film me
Nikos, have you found any Greek restaurants in Japan? And by the way, kali oreksi!
I will get around to it soon
Is that Chris Broad in the reflection on the door?
No he doesn’t show up for something like this
Ich Komme aus Junk food Japan
(I come from Junk food Japan)
Since Junk Food Japan is a brand and not a location, you would say "Ich komme von"
good point, I hadn't thought of that
Danke schon mein freund
08:30 Junk Food Japan for TV game! #pepsiman
LoL. Did you know I am to be found on at least 3 different PlayStation games and GameBoy ?
@@JunkFoodJapan really? That's interesting! Is it just for martial arts or random cameos?
all martial arts games, Ichigeki, K-1 X 3, K-1 on gameboy
Them beer sausages looked pornographic to be honest... I love the longer content!
Thanks TOMODACHI
ii shito tomodachi
LoL TOMODACHI
it was interesting to see the contrast between you. all bubbly and exited. while your camera operator JC was standing stoic with his arms over each other. bored out of his/her mind.
This one was filmed by Paul Ballard actually
I was not filming that episode Tomodachi ! 😂
@@Mrjanpon your name was in the video credits below.
w
That was a burger not a meatball.... LoL... Not saying it wasn't nice but no comparison to the IKEA ones.. hahhaaaa
I cannot believe they gave you all this sausage to eat dry with no mustard at all. That's a horrible oversicht.
I wanted it to be that kind of experience
Tomodachi, if I were to visit say half of the places you have visited around Nihon, how many years would I be in Nihon??
It took me a year and 3 months worth of content. So if you go hard I’d say about two weeks?
@@JunkFoodJapan You could do all that in two weeks, woah, I didn't expect that to be the case haha, I think because Nihon is such a beautiful Country I'd space it out so minimum two years there.
May your dreams come true TOMODACHI
@@JunkFoodJapan I hope so too, Tomodachi
