    As a pizza lover, this video made me REALLY hungry. Well done. ;)
    It also reminded me, though: there's a pizza restaurant you should check out in Kichijoji sometime. It opened semi-recently (I think only maybe a year or two ago) in Inokashira Park -- as in, literally IN the park, with a perfect view of the temple on the lake -- in a building that's apparently over 100 years old and quite historic, and with a massive pizza kiln that was imported from Italy and installed specifically for use by the chef, who apparently studied in Italy under some of the top pizza chefs in the world and is ranked as one of Japan's top pizza chefs.
    Place is called Isentei.
    It's high-end, somewhat expensive pizza, but it's VERY good, and it's served with curry oil, of all things -- and man, the curry oil tastes AMAZING on it!
    It's actually not my favorite pizza place in the area -- if I had to rank it, it would be my FOURTH favorite pizza place in the area! -- but it is the most notable, and thus also potentially the most appropriate for a future Junk Food Japan episode.
    Though there is one other pizza place in Kichijoji I could see you covering just for the atmosphere, and this one is a real local staple -- everybody who lives around here knows the place well. It's called Garage 50, and it's notable for two things: one, the pizzas are made in a converted Volkswagen bus parked in a garage that doubles as the dining room (thus the name Garage 50, with the 50 I believe referencing the variety of pizzas the guy who runs the place has on the menu!), and two, every pizza is exactly 650 yen for a relatively sizable personal pie (enough to be a satisfying meal for a big dude like me). So not only is it weirdly kitschy, it's also incredibly cheap! And the pizza is honestly VERY good, too -- like, way better than you'd expect for 650-yen pizza served in a garage out of a Volkswagen bus. ;)
    My actual favorite pizza places in the area are a lot more boring, in that they're just... pizza places that make really, really good pizza! But for the sake of completeness, I will mention them:
    Napoli no Kama is the best pizza in the area, period -- and they deliver! But seriously, there's not even any real competition. Their crust is the star of the show, as it's extremely... glutinous. As in, when you pull it apart, it kind of forms strings of doughy goodness that stretch out, yet it manages to be crispy on the outside as well -- it's just the PERFECT consistency for pizza crust! And every topping is really fresh and delicious -- it's just everything I could ask for from a pizza, so it's my #1 in the area.
    My #2, though, is VERY close! And you could call it my favorite underdog pizza, at least. It's a little place near Mitaka Station called Pizza-ism. The name is weird, but it's run by a really chill dude who studied in New York and did his absolute best to duplicate a proper New York slice, and... he succeeded. Like, his pizza is a PERFECT replica of what I'd get all the time from mom-and-pop pizzerias in New York or my home state of Pennsylvania. It's such a nostalgic flavor and texture, it's hard for it NOT to be one of my favorite pizza places around, you know? And best of all, they sell pizza by the slice, which is so rare in Japan that it's reason alone to check the place out, honestly!
    All in all, though, I'm kind of spoiled living in Kichijoji, as this place just has SO MANY good pizza spots! But if you ever want to do pizza again on Junk Food Japan, I highly recommend either Isentei or Garage 50 -- or, hey, go for Napoli no Kama and Pizza-ism too, and add in some of the other big hitters in the area like GG's, Mother's, and Tony's, and make it a Kichijoji pizza special! Sounds delicious to me, at least, and I'm sure neither you nor your viewers would object. ;)

(Then again, I love this place in general, so I'm a little biased! Heheh.)

    Romans go hard on all sorts of vegetables that most of us wouldn't think on putting on pizzas but it's so goddamn delicious you immediately understand why after you try it. Eggplant, olive and spicy salami pizza was one of my personal favorites whilst there.
    One of the pizzas I ate had artichoke on it. I think it was pepperoni, beef, mushroom and artichoke pizza and that artichoke really brought the whole thing together.

    Eggplant Marinara Pizza... I never would have thought of it. But from what I learned from Italian Pizzaioli, that toppings should add a level of flavor without subtracting from any other ingredient, it makes 100% sense. It makes me wonder what that would taste if you mix it with Mushrooms... I might try that sometime soon.

    (6:08 and 7:40) the point you make about the dough being able to carry all those toppings is proof that that thin dough is not traditional Italian (nor a Roman pinsa). It is convenient because you can eat without making a mess but it is a substantial alteration.
    His marinara contains cheese (which cheese?) which is the ingredient that distinguishes a marinara from a margherita. Beside anchovies. Anchovies are normal on a marinara and are a common pizza topping.
    Would I eat those "pizzas"? Probably (if I couldn't find a Japanese restaurant), they do look yummie.
    Would I consider them authentic? Nope. Not with that dough.

    I'm in the camp that the pizza crust makes the pizza. Great toppings on cardboard just aren't good eats to me. I like all the different crusts from deep-dish to NY style, but the puffy type you had at Sanfermo is my favorite. From what my NY friends have told me (I'm Californian), you're supposed to fold a thin pizza slice in half and eat it like a floppy taco. So, I think pizza eating etiquette is flexible, even if someone says otherwise. But maybe that's just because I'm Californian? The first pizza was like my favorite potato, broccoli cheese soup with bacon on the best fresh bread. The eggplant pizza looked divine, especially if the eggplant was the Japanese/ Asian type. The globe eggplants that are commonly sold here are too spongy and bitter. I have to find a specialty market to get the thinner, more tender variety of eggplant.
    A little side story about the colorful radish slice (pink and white snowflake pattern) in your salad. The first time I made Japanese daikon pickles, I thought to add that purple radish in with the daikon to make the pickles colorful. Sadly, the colors went away, and the radish became a dull yellow-brown. That is how I learned why the Japanese dye their pickles with very bright food coloring.

    • @Wyrdwad
      @Wyrdwad Год назад +3

      @@jacobwisner7821 The funny thing is, Japanese Domino's is actually AWESOME. Like, it's way better quality than American Domino's! Much like Japanese KFC, Japanese Domino's is like, on a whole other level from its American counterpart.
      It IS expensive, though! But there are always tons of coupons available to use, which mitigates that somewhat.
      There are also lots of cheaper pizza options, but you have to hunt for them, and the quality varies quite a bit. You'll never run out of options, though -- pizza is quite plentiful here, and sooner or later, you're bound to find at least one place that you really like!

    That potato cheese sauce sounds suspiciously like a chessier, more spreadable version of a French dish - pommes aligot - which I'm pretty sure is a good thing regardless (unless you're lactose intolerant). Plus points if the chef is mashing skin-on roasted potatoes for the extra smoky flavor and texture.
    These dishes would probably go well with a off-dry bubbly wine with enough acidity and tannins to cut through the oil and a subtle fruity sweetness to reset the palate - maybe a Reisling blend or a Rosé? Hmmmm. Can't wait to go back to Japan, it's been way too long.

    video idea: you and another person go to a prefecture and you must pick 3 of the best foods from the prefecture with a time limit and soon as you choose one food you must call the other person and tell them what you chose so that you both wont choose the same things and then you would challenge eachother and the winner would pay for what the other person bought so the budget doesnt matter.

    Pizza seems to be a premium item in Japan at about 1,2-2x the price you'd pay here in Europe... those toppings are mildly weird, but not too out there - I think I've seen worse (like sweet potato and chocolate, or cale and beets, both in Kyoto in a buffet style restaurant - come to think of it, Kyoto has loads of weird food, must be all the catering to tourists). They didn't even offer you honey or mayo to dip your crust with, or other things that would be a food crime in Italy.

    Japanese Pizza is fine if you like seafood and unusual vegetables. I understand that many common Pizza ingredients are rare in Japan.
    It's a very different product to American, Australian or Italian pizza🍕.

    • @Wyrdwad
      @Wyrdwad Год назад +2

      It can be, but honestly, every pizza topping you'd find in the U.S., you'll find available in Japan as well. It's no problem getting a pepperoni pizza, or a ground beef pizza, or a deluxe with green peppers, onions, Italian sausage, etc.
      The exception, of course, is if you're in a more Italian-style pizza place, which will have more traditional Italian-style toppings. But, like, the most common pizza you'll find in Japan is a margherita pizza, which is just tomatoes and basil -- an Italian staple, and basically EVERY pizza place here has it.
      I wouldn't say most common pizza ingredients are rare in Japan in any way. And finding a good pizza here is honestly quite easy -- just order Domino's! Seriously! Japanese Domino's is NOT the same as American Domino's... it's way better!
      Just... avoid Pizza-La. That's Japan's homegrown delivery pizza chain, and it suuuuuuuuucks...

      @@Wyrdwad Thank you for the huge reply !
      I wasn't including JDM Dominos, because they have trash pizza at crazy prices. I only eat Italian style traditional pizza.
      I was referring to ingredients like good pepperoni, buffalo mozzarella, smoked ham etc. All are not common in Japan.

    • @Wyrdwad
      @Wyrdwad Год назад +1

      @@edwardfletcher7790 Hmm. You might just be right! Though I would debate you on good-quality pepperoni, as my favorite local pizza place near where I live in Kichijoji, "Napoli no Kama," has some of the best pepperoni I've ever had! Then again, I have junk food taste, generally preferring American pizzeria-style pizza over traditional Italian-style, so I'm probably not one to talk. ;)
      I've seen pretty good ham on pizza at a few Italian places too, though. And I THINK a few have offered buffalo mozzarella, though I'm not a huge fan of it, so I can't say for sure.
      Either way, if that's the level of quality you're looking for, then I will concede, Japan's not going to be the best choice for your pizza adventures, indeed!

    I just arrived back in São Paulo, Brazil, after a month in Japan, and I'm not gonna get into "Which city has the best pizza in the world" as São Paulo has a very intense pizza culture, and it's hands down the best pizza in Brazil, also having being a center for Italian immigration by the transition of 19th to 20th century, so what I will defend is we know our pizza, and the one I had in Tokyo was fine by me, it wasn't better than São Paulo pizza, but also wasn't put to shame either, it was an alright Margarita pizza, could have been served on any decent-to-good pizza place here, I was very positively surprised, and it wasn't an expensive place, 1800 yen for the whole lunch. Can't remember the name of the place, but it was close to Japan Women's University. The dough, which is the tell of a poor pizza, was spot on perfect, was good dough, done on a woodfire brick stove, no weird ingredients such as potato cream or mayo... just tomato, cheese, Basel and dough... and it was really really good.
