As an In N Out Stan I can admit it's not the best tasting or biggest fast food burger but the consistency and price is why it gets rated so highly. Also I remember being able to get them at like 1am in NorCal

The thing I appreciate about In-N-Out is that the companies treat their employees better than other fast food chains. Granted they work you hard because it's so fast paced. If you see fast food pay rates it's better than others in the same area.
If you wanna move up you can. Most of corporate started flipping burgers and there are programs for going to college.
For the menu itself the real good stuff lies in the secret menu and lil hacks people have for it. Admittedly I appreciate the french fries are just potatoes, but they're mid at best if you don't get animal style or well done versions.

I don't think they realized that a lot of people love In-N-Out is because you can custom order everything to get exactly what you want. Want crispy fries, they will do that. Want the patty medium-rare or well done, they will do that. Want 3 patties instead of 2 wrapped in lettuce instead of buns, they will do that. Want fries covered in Thousand Island dressing and melted cheese, they will do that.

I am not a fan of the combo as it comes.. I get mine with mustard fried into the burger, no sauce, and light-well fries. Its a totally different experience.

As it goes, the In N Out secret menu is really, if they have the ingredients and method of prep, they will do whatever you want with it. That being said, as a guy who grew up in California, In N Out is appreciated more for it’s consistency in taste and execution more so than being a knockout burger. If you go to an In N Out at any time or day you will always have a consistently good burger. Maybe not the best burger but always satisfying

Thanks for all the great content! :) Having lived in SoCal for almost ten years now, I’ve finally figured out In n Out. Sure, you can get better burgers at a ton of different places. That’s no secret. You can absolutely get a way better burger at Five Guys - but pay quite a bit more. And honestly, it’s pretty overpriced.
For the price and what you get - In n Out is almost unbeatable. Also, the best way to enjoy In n Out is in the car. You have to eat it right away. There’s a reason that the default serving option is in a box. If you take it to go - or even wait 10-15 minutes, you’re almost doing yourself a disservice.
My recommendation - get a double-double animal style, animal fries and a coke in the box. Pull over into the parking lot right after getting your food and eat immediately. Perfect meal if you’re on the go. Trust me. If you’re into burgers and fries in any way, you won’t regret it.

I remember spending so many days at the beach during the summer as a kid, and going to In N Out for lunch or at the end of the day was awesome. The burgers are cheaper and probably healthier than mcdonalds or other fast food. There's just something about it. In N Out has definitely developed its own Mythos, and I think people's memory of the place is really what makes it so legendary. I've never felt bad after going there. And fuck it, it's fun to be stupidly proud about the place. It's always been privately held by the same family so it really embodies the american dream, too. They aren't sell outs.

In N Out is great for its value, customization, and price point. You can't compare it to places triple the price. And I always ask them to do things like make the fries crispy. Finally, we try to be sodium-conscious in SoCal, where the chain hails, so no-salt caters to a customer segment that are vocal and picky.

    • @Zammy-gj8xn
      @Zammy-gj8xn 9 месяцев назад

But it just doesnt make sense though - why would you want to go get a greasy fast food burger in the first place if you're looking to be health-conscious? It has the same logic as like buying an over-sized meal but insisting on getting the diet coke instead of the regular.

So In N Out makes a good, quality burger with mild customization, using all fresh ingredients.
But I think the reason people rave is that you get exactly what you order--it isn't fake ingredients and it doesn't give you some flabby disappointment compared to advertisements. Ironically, the mouth-to-mouth marketing can be TOO good, which you addressed today. But at the end of the day, In N Out may be an 8/10 at best yet never seems to fall below a 7/10, unlike any other fast food chain (except maaaybe Raising Canes).
The fries are unique but overall not great, though, haha.

There's not much crunch on the fries because it was freshly cut and only fried once. Most fast food places use frozen pre-cut, pre-fried fries. When they refry them at the restaurant, this makes them double-fried for a crispier texture.

In n Out actually use a kennebec potato which is a dryer potato so it doesn't have much water in it as a normal russet potato used in traditional potatoes. He's right tho, I think majority will say get it well done and if this is the case in n out should have originally served it well done to begin with and people can ask for it to be less done maybe? lol. As a native Californian I agree that the cult like devotion to In-N-Out Burger puzzles me. The terrible fries alone are a non-starter. Doesn't matter how you order them, secret menu or not -- they suck lol. As you said the burgers aren't bad. The problem, as you also stated, is that it is such a huge ordeal just to place an order and wait for your food. Trying to eat in the actual restaurant is another obstacle course. I've eaten there many times and it's never changed my mind. My only guess to the devoted following is that all the ingredients are fresh, and it's not super pricey. The restaurants are also clean and well run, so that's a plus. Just temper your expectations if you've never been to one before✌

The only thing Five Guys has going for it is its big juicy patties. It is not as well rounded as the In-N-Out burger. Five Guy burgers tend to be soggier and not as fresh tasting, partly due to the fact that they wrap everything in foil wrap, which ends up partially steaming up the vegetables and bun. So when you eat it, the beef is predominant taste, and everything else kinda blends together into a soggy mush. Whereas with the In-N-Out burger, each ingredient is able to stand out on its own, with the lettuce, onions, tomatoes still reasonably cool when you bite into it.

    advice from an Angeleno:
the fries come bare bones so that you can add your own salt to-taste, they always give salt packets. getting regular fries is a rookie mistake though, should’ve gotten animal style fries.
(animal style fries are fries with melted cheese, spread and grilled onions on top)
next your burger, should’ve gotten it with grilled onions or if you’re a fan of pickles, get the burger animal style as well, as it comes with grilled onions and pickles.
lastly, should’ve gotten peppers and extra spread on the side.
that’s the way to do it, with a pink lemonade.👌🏼
in n out is just a classic no frills burger that holds it’s own without all the bells and whistles. that’s what makes it elite.

In-n-out takes me back to simpler times when American food was more proportional. A time when an 8oz soda would suffice. It's a simple burger. The fries are fried potatoes as the name implies. Not par-fried at a factory and fried again at the restaurant. They're a bit limpy, but they are potatoey. It's about half the price as Five Guys or Shake Shack. Better than FG, comparable to SS.

A 7 seems too generous; otherwise I'll agree with Mr. Affable. When I visited the West Coast, In n Out was way overhyped, perhaps a sign of over zealous local pride. But my friends and family forget I'm from NYC, the Food and Culture Mecca of Earth. NYC is every foodie's Dream come true. Frankly, I've had better, thicker, juicier, more flavor bursting burgers at family Diners on the East Coast that put In n Out to shame. Overall I was disappointed. In n Out is ok if you're hungry and there's nothing else nearby, but that's it.

To put things in perspective (Prices in Northern California):
Shake Shack - Single Cheeseburger: $6.09, Double Cheeseburger: $8.89
    Five Guys - Cheeseburger: $10.69
    In-n-out: Single Cheeseburger: $3.85, Double Cheeseburger: $5.40
The value proposition of In-n-out is far superior

You guys gotta do animal-style burger and fries, next time.
Also, what I really like about In-n-out is that it's consistently good regardless of the location or staff. You always know you'll get a good burger.
Five Guys can be super inconsistent depending on location and staff. Sometimes you get really awesome burgers, sometimes you get crappy ones that are missing a bunch of things you added.

Also, I was asking my friend why there weren't a whole lot of "American-sized" people at In-N-Out and she told me they were all at Five Guys.

I'm also originally from the east coast(been living in the bay area for the past 13 years). I was excited to try in n out when I first arrived. I found it to be mid at best. Then everyone I talked to told me I was ordering it wrong. That I should ask for the fries well done with extra salt, ask for this or that animal style, order from the secret menu, etc. My question is why don't they just serve the food like that to begin with? Why should I have to ask them to make it taste better? Between that and the waiting times I'd rather spend a few bucks more at five guys or shake shack.
