    I'm in my 33rd year as a T4-5 para and I wish we had social media back in the 80s when I had my accident. I stayed positive and never had a problem dating, however, there are some people out there who are just shallow and can't look past your wheels to see you. I was 18 and just out of high school by one week when I had my accident and I still went to college as planned, (just started 6 months late) and have enjoyed a long career in the IT industry. Never give up and never stop trying, you can do more than most would ever believe. Although, you two did something in this video that I have never been able to do in my 33 years as a para, and that was wearing a pair of shorts. I have never wanted my skinny little legs showing at all. You both have great women backing you, so hang on to them

    • @JeffryLandry
      @JeffryLandry 4 года назад

      @Martyr4JesusTheChrist I was in the South when I had my accident and while I was in College, then moved to the Midwest. I could very easily see that sort of attitude in women out West. To me, women in the South are much more loving, for lack of a better word.

    Good shit guys! Broke my neck at 17 and 5 /12 years later I can say making myself get out and just do things has been the most important part of my recovery. It is still a daily struggle and I got plenty of progress to make, but it's the mindset of telling yourself to just go do it, even if you don't want to, that will bring you the most. Staying in and doing nothing is one of the WORST things you can do for yourself both physically and more importantly mentally! Your mind can be your own worst enemy in this. Don't defeat yourself.
    Keep up the great content!

    This is a grate video. When I was first injured (t-9/t-12 incomplete) One of the first people I came across on Instagram was Matt. Me being a huge car guy that was the most hurtful thing for me was not being able to drive anymore. So I would look for people in wheelchairs that had bad ass cars. I have always drove manual transmission cars so having to go to an automatic was heartbreaking to me. Then as I started gaining movement back in my body I was drawn into you by your screen name @wheels2walking. That became my only focus and goal was to walk again. When I get weak or down on myself I think of the people in wheelchairs that would KILL to be given the Second chance that I am. I thank you guys for putting yourself out there for the likes of others. For me I didn’t even know what a SCI was before I had one. I maybe walking again but there’s so much more to it then that and people are just uneducated.

    I had my assessment for my wheelchair today. They wanted me to go straight to a power chair. I prefer not to. So we agreed. I'd start with self propelled but I've to look into electric assistants and funding for it. It's starting to sink in, I'll have my own chair by Christmas. And I need to raise/get funded something in the region of £5,000...
    I should add. Thank you to you, because without your videos I wouldn't have had a clue what I was talking about or wanting when it came to the chairs design.

      @aceoldford266 4 года назад +2

      SmartDrive is a pretty good power assist. It works well, holds a charge for well over a day, and can be controlled via a bluetooth watch! The only problem is that it is around $5,000 CAD, although that isn't that big of a deal if you have good enough insurance or live in countries like Canada for example.

    • @AndiPandiBee
      @AndiPandiBee 4 года назад

      @Martyr4JesusTheChrist I have multiple sclerosis. I'm unable to walk far and weakness is setting in - hence they recommended electric. But medically docs and nurse etc always recommend forcing to keep moving for as long as possible, once you stop you can't gain it back kind of thing. Hence I'm looking at an assistant device for manual, which will keep some movement going but also not kill me in the process.

    • @AndiPandiBee
      @AndiPandiBee 4 года назад

      @@aceoldford266 yeah we don't have insurance based system here. We do get funding for electric or self propelled or manual chairs no bother. But of we want an assistant device , we need to find that funding ourselves, through charity or savings. As I live on disability finding savings just isn't possible.

      Fellow zebra! I appriciate the sentiment of this video, I actually struggling to not be super judging myself right now, because I *do* spend much of my time in bed, not because I want to, but because my body just... I have to conserve spoons, and it's healthiest for me to *not* shower everyday (with POTS especially, showers are straight up dangerous for me, I'm thankful that I just started getting a person to help me out a couple times a week, but... Yeah...)
      Glad to see other eds peep, though... I'm trying to not be judging myself and I just have to remind myself that they are addressing different challenges, so mine in some ways are much less challenging, and in other ways more limiting
      I guess just focus on knowing our own bodies and doing what we need to be healthiest and feel confident
      (I guess, lol... Idk) :-/

      Another Zebra here too! I do low impact, body weight only exercises that are horizontal (floor only). Those are safer for my body and easier on my POTS. I was a figure skater and a runner so I totally feel you. Look up exercise routines for POTS, the majority of those do okay with joints too. KT tape or joint braces to support during workout.

      I deeply miss working out and being able to better maintain my hygiene. I am disabled by my Chiari Malformation, and with that, I also have a lot of other internal deformities, POTS, suspected MCAS and EDS. I think the takeaway from this video, even if you’re like me, where you may be unable to do a lot of what’s in this video, is to not give up and to continue trying any ideas you come up with. Having all of the accommodation tools that could help you could give you a boost in energy, lessen pain, etc. That’s not always enough to be able to do what you’d like, but, sometimes, it can be enough to do a little bit, or even more in ways that are applicable to you.

      Austin Bolding hey Austin ! I got injury from after shooting as well. My first question to you would be what you care about? What did you want to do? What motivates you or puts a smile on ur face ? Make a list. Even if it seems rediculous and impossible. Just brain storming. Get it out. Then there’s a fun game almost you can play with ok. How do I pull this off. Even if it seems super unlikely. Think of it like a video game. What’s the hacks or little tricks you can do to get around potential barriers.
      I beg you don’t change your goals because of injury. How you may get there is probably gonna be different.
      If u ever wanna chat hit me up. Best of luck

      Great video. Can you provide the name and link to the car hand contol. Looks interesting. How do you like it. Any insights on hand controls? I am doing some research on hand controls and would be interested in your options.

      Just a suggestion, learn AutoCAD or maybe better SketchUp. Start with the free version. Lots and lots of companies need CAD guys in every industry. Mechanical (factories) and Architectural (Architects and homebuilders). Lots of work out there and it is great for your mind. If you have any mechanical aptitude, you can do it. Lots of free tutorials online as well.
      Maybe you want to give it a try.......

    How long will it take to gain sufficient arm and shoulder strength to move outside easily all day. I have just got my wheelchair and I a still a bit concerned about going out on my own. I have concerns about hills up and down, steps uneven surfaces, I supposed the same as everyone else! I am not a young man but a 62 yrs woman but who has always kept fit, I swim and use my own gym at home. I was a soldier for over 20 yrs and I m determined to keep living my life To the full. Thank you for the videos

    I'm curious if you have any advice on fatigue? I have such severe pain (CRPS) that I'm exhausted on a good day. I love hitting the gym but I don't go often because I'm just too tired. I keep up with my physio but that wipes me out for at least the day of, if not the next day too. My diet is clean (no added sugars, minimal carbs, lots of veggies, protein, healthy fats) I am eating at a caloric deficit because I need to lose about 50lbs that I gained while house-bound before I got my chair (I have tried without the deficit and it doesn't change my energy levels). We are also heading into the Canadain winter, which means increased pain and much more limited mobility.

    Gay woman here! I will soon be a wheel chair user due to nueropathy and other chronic disease. I've been sick and in pain 5 years. My life and dating life was totally stolen from me. This was a huge help. And now I'm pretty excited to start over. I want to get back in to archery.
    Ps you left out the benefits of having strong arms from using a wheel chair 😉 just saying.
