I think this is by far the best looking Timex reissue they’ve done so far. £150 doesn’t seem too bad. Will you be reviewing the Tissot PRX? It seems like it would be an interesting point of comparison to this - another 70s quartz reissue, but at nearly the double the price...

    • @devonboyd533

I bought a prx and I have slightly larger wrists then ben and it was way to big on me due to the end links
It’s a gorgeous but in my opinion they need to make it in 36 or 37 if they want to keep that lug style

I agree. There's not really any other good option for a dress watch that's as authenticaly vintage in size and design at this price -- quartz or auto. Its design reminds me a lot of the 1600/16000 Datejusts.
The only contenders I can think of that's similar in design, size, and price are the 34mm timex marlin and the 35mm lip himalaya.
People also say this is basically an overpriced milano xl, but that has a loud timex movement and the design is not vintage at all.

    • @neerajnongmaithem392

In india it cost around 250-260 pounds depending upon the exchange rate, I would say at that price it's good enough for me to buy it. Would have preferred a cost of 200-210 pounds, but it is what is it.

I was around (as a kid) when these Timexes were "the norm" and commonly found on wrists-- and I can honestly say, I love what Timex has done with their move towards "nostalgia."
However, what's missing today is what sold so many watches for them in the 70s-- their products were *affordable!*
$120 to $180+ (USD) for a Timex (especially one built to 1970s specs) is ridiculous! And it's also what has kept me from owning a re-issue...
I'd rather spend that much on a "nicer," better made watch like a Seiko or Citizen

  • @trevorhofmann1562

If you like the vintage look, which I do (being vintage myself), this is a great addition to any collection. It's actually my most recent purchase, but to be clear, I didn't purchase retail, and would never pay full pop ($229 CAD) for one. Instead, I purchased it unworn (still with plastic crystal sticker in place) for $100 CAD, which is the equivalent of 59 GBP or $80 USD, which is about right for this watch. I previously purchased the 1975 reissue and Falcon Eye for the same price, plus two 34mm hand-wound Marlins (a black one with a Cali dial and a silver/champagne version with regular arabics) for $120 and $50 CAD apiece (the silver didn't include the pricey box), plus a 1979 faux diver in its classic Pepsi colours for $150 CAD. I really love these vintage pieces, especially considering there are plenty of disgruntled owners willing to part with them for much less than they paid, so I recommend purchasing these used. Also, it's not recommended to purchase a vintage Timex mechanical, as they can't be repaired easily if at all (I have a few and they're only good for decoration), making the new Marlins, that incorporate repairable jewelled movements, much more appealing. Thanks for covering this unique reissue, Ben, and for telling it like it is. A great watch for 60 quid, but not for 160. Cheers from Canada

To be honest, I much prefer acrylic to mineral crystal. I’d rather be able to polish out scratches than live with them, I find it really has a warm tone, and it is naturally anti-reflective. It’s just better than mineral crystal for a light duty watch like this. For a diver too.
There is something nice about mineral crystal when bright and shiny is the aesthetic, but sapphire beats it there. I got a scratch in one of my favourite dive watch’s crystal and I had to order diamond paste to (mostly) get it out.

I bought one for two reasons. One is I recently had a stroke and my vision has been affected. My trusty old Gshock is now hard to read. The old analog hands is now much easier to read at a glance, so I bought it as a replacement for my GShock for wear at work. 2nd, this is strictly a nostalgic purchase. My dad had the original and one of my earliest memories is playing with my dad's watch.

It is pure 1970s (I'm 67) and after my mother admired a similar looking Omega Seamaster automatic I bought myself cheap from the NAFFI shop in Germany (I was in the RAF) when I was home on leave, I spotted the Timex version, date only but automatic, and I bought it for her as her every day watch. I think it was about £5.

It reminds me of my cool Seiko 5 Actus from 1970 that I acquired a few years ago for very little money. Cushion case, a nice dial etc. Of course I've no idea how long that automatic movement will live, and that's of course the good thing with nostalgic/retro inspired watches vs vintage; You get a new movement and don't have to worry about longevity for quite some while.

Check the "Perpetual calendar" series by Timex. I have a small wrist too, but they (T2N504 in my case) looks somehow very good on it, and even slick for such a huge thickness. These are the only Timex series I shall concider for buying or giving as a present to someone. They give a very accurate and stylish, distinguished look, totally automatic calendar and indiglo, not to mention that I pay no attention to its maintanance.

The look is pretty awesome. It really hits that early quartz aesthetic spot on. Overpriced maybe, but the lower-priced timex watch you mentioned towards the end doesn't look half as cool. Not sayin it is worth getting but you may be undervaluing the aesthetics here, too. The strap ticks me off more than anything. Prolly should be about 125 USD, plus tax.

Yeah, $169 is really going to break the bank. Go buy a Rolex and see what you get for your money. An ugly green box.

The Marlin Jet is bar far the best retro looking this is nice; I would consider if I could find a better strap.

Based off the watch box, I thought you had bought a nice bottle of whiskey.

my issue with reissues like this is you can pick up vintage enicars or seikos for that sort of price off Ebay

My Falcon eye came with the same box, I personally hate that watch because it's impossible to align the minute hand with the indexes...never experienced anything similar before.

"Holy Molly" is exactly what I thought when you said the price! At $50, I would consider it an acceptable deal, if one is looking for a retro-looking quartz watch with a $10 movement. But at > $150, forget it. As usual, great video, great analysis, and great fun watching you! Thanks!

How many 50 usd watches are even out there that aren't complete junk or some vague knock off. You are asking way too much. You do realize everything that goes into creating a watch and that in the end a company still needs to make some money?

I dig the groovy vintage feel of this piece but wish Timex would have made it a hand winding movement.

Wait a minute! $155.00 POUNDS!! That’s pushing $220.00+ Canadian ! Not a chance TIMEX, I’ll stick to my Seiko’s and Casio’s for that price.

The Timex looks better than your Seiko's and Casio's.

'Vanilla' watches I guess sell well with the masses since it's more discreet and minimal. The flashier 'unique' ones are for the watch enthusiasts. I'm guessing that has a lot to do with it.

I think that it is a touch pricier than needs be, but it is very elegant. If the strap was a better quality the price may be more appropriate

As you mentioned, $50 and some searching on ebay or wallapop or your favorite used item market can yield some great actual vintage pieces. Before the quartz crisis there were a ton of brands that are now gone. Nowadays they go for cheap but they are nice. The mechanical movements are generally simple and can be serviced. Be careful with old quartz though because parts may be hard to come by.

I personally really dig the look of this watch. If it was $100 I would have absolutely picked it up. But its actual price is too high, especially if I need to spend additional money on a better strap.
