  • There was a period of Norm Duke's career where he went on an insane run of form and was basically unstoppable. However, it wasn't all plain sailing and he had to battle hard against a number of issues to make it back to the top.
In this video we look at how things went wrong for Norm, to the point that he almost fell off the PBA tour and how he managed to turn things around to achieve greatness.

Norm was such a beloved figure in the PBA. His last shot during the PBA league was so touching. It was obvious how much the other players love and respect him.

What’s crazy is that Duke and Koivuniemi also met for the 2011 US Open title match, where it also came down to a spare, and also nearly had the same score of 225-216 (in 2008, it was 224-216!)

Ryan Shafer was like the Washington Generals vs Globetrotters when he bowled on TV.

That 2008-09 World Championship show is my favorite. Duke's dominance and emotion creates perfection.

I absolutely love all of your videos. Eloquently presented, factual, and intriguing to watch. Even if I've already seen and know most of the factoids. Keep it up sir!

One of my favorite bowlers of all time. Could play any angle, any shot pattern. Norm could strike on 10 pins laid out in the parking lot and that towel shot of his lol

For me, it’s his passion, class, and longevity that make him the GOAT, through he may not be #1 in titles. Winning all the way from 1983 to 2019, he is one of very few players to succeed across many different eras of bowling. (We’ll see if Jason Belmonte is still winning in the late 2040s)

To my mind the ultimate PBA shotmaker. Very difficult to close him out of a tournament whatever the condition and if the shot is outside 10 he is on he is almost unstoppable.

Only from watching on TV so I might be wrong, but I always got the impression that Duke and Ryan Shafer really didn't like each other. Two of the little guys on the tour but both very determined and good bowlers and they seemed to come up against each other a lot on TV. Maybe it was that Duke was so popular and while it wasn't that the fans disliked Shafer but they just loved Duke. Just an impression I got over the years and might be completely wrong. Duke had such a killer instinct, which you find in little guys. He was friendly & genial except when a match was on the line, and then he was a killer.

Favorite video of THE DUKE when he bowled his FIRST TV tournament 300 against Dead EYE/Walter Ray William JR! THE DUKE used a different ball on each lane too! & when he WON the title against Mika Koivuniemi ONLY because Mika missed the 10 pin on the pick up! THE duke thought for sure HE LOST until Mika MISSED the 10 pin. WOW!
