Scraps: Steve Martin and Conan Work Out The Top 10 List | CONAN on TBS
/ teamcoco
The only time you'll see Conan dress up for rehearsal is when Steve Martin comes by. :)
Ha! So true.
Ha! I was think the same thing.
The funniest part is when they cut to the guy impersonating Paul Shaffer.
The magnificent Brian Stack
So hilarious! Best part of the video for sure!
Definitely. They had me fooled at first!
Well yeah this was the build up to the actual joke
They shoulda had him mimic Paul's totally offbeat and terrible comic timing too. Funny how a guy who plays music can have such bad comedic timing.
Guys it's not a big deal Conan's just preparing his show in various ways
No, I think that was schlansky. If he's performing at his best, conan won't notice him. He does have various tasks on the show, you know.
@@jkap34 wow you understood the reference and did the same joke
I believe that's a private matter.
Brian stack as Paul Shaffer is amazing
Hahahaha Brian Stack as Shaffer! Such a legend!
guys! they don't rehearse every single guest's appearance. they rehearse comedy bits, and steve martin was in one that episode, so they rehearsed it.
not true , everything is rehearsed
Huckleberry Lachow no. Most interviews are guests brought on live, they don’t come to rehearsal
I think Steve Martin is a special case actually. Steve Martin is veeeery meticulous and by the numbers and rehearses everything beat for beat before performing. I don't think they rehearse every bit they do with comedians
@@superIBM1231 At the very least, they'll talk backstage about questions and answers ... almost no interview is straight cold. There's usually a plan as to what stories will be told, in what order, and what questions will trigger them. The meat and bones are there, but the rest is improvised.
interviews aren't rehearsed, but when a guest like Steve Martin wants to come out and do a bit, of course that bit has to be rehearsed.
Yeah and especially when they r doing a "top 10"
The interviews _are_ rehearsed
I’m pretty sure interviews are definitely rehearsed
Ee Fsss they aren’t fully rehearsed, conan has said that he goes backstage before the show to see the guests and just figure out loosely what they’re going to be talking about
@tommylips yeah they come up with ways to set up the stories and jokes and all that
I think these scraps are a good thing. They show people how much work goes into making each sketch...not to mention all the other people involved but not seen here, like the writers, graphical artists, prop makers, cameramen, sound guys, director etc etc. It's a full-time job making these...
I think the very best part is the last shot of the keyboardist's hand.
Interesting to go back and watch the original TV version now. Conan, even though he knows exactly what's coming, still finds a way to genuinely laugh uncontrollably
Its funny dat the scrap has got more views than the actual thing
Haha, Conan is actually nice when a guest is present. It’s like my parents!
Thanks for sharing this. I love seeing the process behind how a bit is constructed.
I think a lot of people confuse interviews with bits. They need to practice these so they can properly set up the joke and work off of each other.
Seeing this makes the actual live show so much better, I love this
In response to everyone saying it, no the interviews are not rehearsed. Sketches and bits within the interviews are. Also comedians usually coordinate with the host to talk about certain subjects that they have prepared commentary or stories for. That doesn't mean every line of an interview is rehearsed.
Conan with those glasses looks like the ginger version of Martin Scorsese 0:06
2:41 i fucking lost it when i saaw paul shaffer XD
Brian Stack playing with the band at the end lmfao
has steve martin always sounded like letterman? he sounds so similar its uncanny lol
Stack's keyboard miming skills are second to none.
WAIT A MINUTE....So you are telling me that when the guest comes out and shakes hands with the host, that's not the first time they've met that day? You are telling me that it is all staged for entertainment purposes and the guest is just there to promote themselves and not there just to have a friendly chat?
NNNNOOOOOOOOOO
Scott Ishman They usually have to have a rehearsal. It allows Conan to show the guest the tempo of the show. That's why you can hear him saying "We'll get straight into it". You wouldn't want a guest to come on without a rehearsal and just take over the show.
Scott Ishman Well if they do a bit like that then yeah they have to rehearse. If its jsut a straight interview they still have notes on what to talk about or bring up. They NEVER go in to it just completely blind.
Neiloch Unless its Craig Ferguson RIP
+Scott Ishman It's a comedy bit man. So yes they rehearse that..
It depends on the guest. and I do feel that oftentimes, it is an unrehearsed conversation. sometimes it is rehearsed, but to me, that doesn't retract at all from the quality of the show.
I remember seeing this bit on the show, and it was perfect.
I'm confused by the notion that if this is scripted, then all the interviews on Conan's show must be scripted. This is a comedy sketch. Those are obviously scripted. Their introduction is planned so that it seamlessly transitions into the sketch. As for the real interviews, they probably have a list of talking points, but it's not scripted word for word. Can't believe I have to explain this.
Only bits are scripted
+robinheil Well that information isn't readily available for most lay people, so yeah people who are curious may want to query this. Its a legitimate question. Don't be a dick about it. Thanks though.
+Arshad Nazran by lay people do you mean slow people?
+robinheil Well, Jerry Seinfeld once told about the pre-interview on Seth Meyers. The host or the staff get along with guests and they try to talk about some bits of slice of life, the things they are promoting and by that they could elaborate an order to establish the flow of the questions. So.... "do you like cats?" he can prepare the answer and also the host can make an statement.... by that.... he can have timing. Not all can be scripted but in this special moment Conan and Martin may have prepare something special.
Not every host needs to make this special rule... I think Ferguson can interview without making the process of the pre-interview but that's a guess.
And the Number One thing robinhell will type to ruin this comment thread is:
"I'm confused by the notion that if this is scripted, then all the interviews on Conan's show must be scripted. This is a comedy sketch. Those are obviously scripted. Their introduction is planned so that it seamlessly transitions into the sketch. As for the real interviews, they probably have a list of talking points, but it's not scripted word for word. Can't believe I have to explain this."
actually Conan died years ago, all we see its a cyborg.
Nope they pre-recorded 100 years ahead.
Alex Eny cause that makes sense
Pre-recorded as a cyborg.
Cycone.
Farcas Sergiu Oh we are. We're just a rare, special breed that's quite expensive to manufacture.
I commemd you for your achievement "first" guy. I really do. No sarcasm intended. I've always been a fan of your work and this is by far your best work.
Best part is Brian Stack doing Paul Shaffer, 2:43.
Uh, no, I don't think the interviews are rehearsed. This is just a bit (sketch?), they had to rehearse it.
Actually, some interviews are rehearsed as well. They aren't completely scripted but a lot of interviews on talk shows use pre-written prompted questions that cue the guest to tell a joke or story. This is common with comedians like Louis CK.
The fact is, though, that the scripted lines were written by Conan and the guest so regardless, it's good comedy. Also sometimes the do a bit of improvisation in the interview and make it a bit more funny. A good example of this is Jon Stewart being interviewed by Letterman, that's one of the funniest interviews in the last 5 years.
TonyIsGaming
I also think when conan says "We were talking backstage earlier" I think hes just talking about rehearsal.
TonyIsGaming Yeah, a lot of the time it's apparent that Conan and other talk show hosts use pre-prepared prompting questions with guests.
What I meant is that guests don't come in early and do a full run-through of their interview beforehand the way Steve Martin did here, unless there's a comedy bit to prepare for.
I'll check out the Letterman/Stewart interview though. Sounds pretty cool.
TonyIsGaming Aaaand upon a second reading of your comment, I've just realised that I repeated exactly what you said to me. So. Uh. You can go ahead and just disregard my comment there. :P
BudduredToast Craig Ferguson makes fun of other talk show hosts every time a guest comes on by taking the notes and ripping them up every time.
I love how in rehearsals they dont bother with stuff like brushing their hair or taking a shower.
This is pretty funny
Genius work in the making. Just brilliant!
I like seeing the behind-the-scenes bits, obviously a good deal of these interviews are meticulously rehearsed.
ahahaha so sweaty
brian stack as PAUL HAHAHAHA
I'm REALLY loving the scraps!!
ALWAYS making me laugh! Thanks!
I can't believe some of the comments on here.
Of course the bit was scripted & rehearsed!!! It's a BIT!
How do you think they got the graphics ready?!?!
The actual interviews are totally loose but when Conan (or any talk show host) gets a guest to do a little comedy skit with them for their show...they obviously have to prepare. It wouldn't work otherwise. This wasn't a bit you could improv.
For a moment I thought the Paul Shaffer impersonator was Mark McKinney. But Brian Stack did it well!
First time seeing this-pure 🤩
The Paul Shaffer bit was funny. That's about it.....
I like outtakes, I do.
But watching them for a talk show makes me acknowledge they are scripted interviews, not natural conversation. I like telling myself they are talking live and unrehearsed.
they're rehearsing the comedy bit not the interview...
Rehearsing is rehearsing. Maybe not to the "T" but its planned out.
So... if you didn't see the outtakes, you just assumed the graphic artist was drawing up a "Conan's Top 10 List' bumper on the spot? Come on, we're all adults, we know certain things are gags and bits crafted for laughs.
I do agree with your overall sentiment that the "natural" occurrence of events is most appealing (and, quite frankly, tends to be funnier), but there's no harm in giving a peek behind the curtain to something that's obviously fabricated. As a television-producing hopeful, I appreciate the insight into the work that goes into a comedy piece.
I'm pretty sure this is a special case since Steve is participating in a comedy bit. However, in most talk show interviews the celebrities know what the hosts will ask before the interview.
Sarcasm aside, no I'm not so dumb to think the openers, skits, and other jokes aren't pre-written. I'm fine with that. I'm also not being overly anal and saying, "How dare they show us these scraps!" All I meant was, I enjoyed pretending that interviews were fully natural and unscripted. It takes out some of the fun knowing they plan/rehearse what to say to each other. It was merely a personal statement, not meant to insult Conan or any fan who likes watching this. I watch all of Conan's vids and love his work.
I died when "Paul" showed up xD
That was so meta and I love the new title music
Just wondering, for those who've attended or know more about TV stuff, when Conan + guest rehearse beforehand, they don't... actually run the whole joke, do they? Is it similar to a wedding rehearsal in terms of "Okay, you stand here, I stand there, we talk about "topic," and we're done." Is it similar because it does surprise me how much the live does seem natural and mostly genuine.
I swear to god Brian Stack should go down as one of the all time greats in sketch comedy
0:20 so that's how Conans real laughter sounds like...much more likeable than his fake ones!
Steve is so funny👏👏
I will never think the same of these funny interviews as I did before...
Lmao best bit in a while.
I remember seeing this sketch on night it aired.
I love the royalty-free knockoff of the Letterman theme at the end.
Yes I have downloaded this video because I like the theme. It's so catchy
damn this is so great!
that comedy well joke is gold
That was great.
Paul the keyboard guy was great
I love the intro
i just love the music after no 1 on the list....its so funny
Hahaha I think letterman would be flattered lol
Steve's hair...beaut.
Why the hell would you need to have a rehearsal for a talk show? Conan is at his best when he's out and about doing things out of the studio. But he's no where near as good as Graham Norton or Craig Ferguson.
You can't compare British talk shows with American ones. I really like Graham Norton as well, but I wouldn't compare the two of them
***** Yeah, they're more laid back I suppose. In general we have a different kind of talk show sector.
Matt Damon did say on Graham Norton the other week that it was the best he'd ever been on.
***** Craig is an American talk show..
That should have made it I liked that bit XD
Steve doesnt age .
I dont think they rehearse everything, just these bits where they do something out of ordinary
Play a banjo-guitar duet.
do they do rehearsals for all the guests that come on?
+MemeThemeDisser no. they rehearse the bits.
Now I wonder if comedians rehearse there jokes before hand. Bill burr comes to mind when bill is telling a joke conan looks like he's waiting for him to hit the punch line so he can do his laugh, like he's waiting for a que.
Conan is one of the greatest comedy writers of all time and knows the rhythm of jokes and that the punchline is coming. He usually doesn't know what the joke is (especially with Bill Burr and Norm Macdonald).
How Dare you! How Dare me! How Dare greta!
Only Brian could have done since Paul Shaffer so well.
Brian Stack ftw
Steve's hair.
Brian Stack as that annoying pipsqueak Paul lol
If you get tickets for Conan, can you go to the studio early and watch the rehearsal?
+Billy McKnabb No, only the interns sit in the audience for rehearsal
I would think it was obvious that this is being rehearsed because it's a comedy sketch with moving parts and that the actual interviews aren't rehearsed like this. Yeah, they have pre-interviews with the producers on what they want to talk about, but not scripted out like a comedy bit. And Conan's best interviews are when they veer away from the prepared questions (ie Norm Macdonald and Jeff Goldblum).
Some say Paul Shaffer is still adjusting his microphone position. Sad thing is, he never found it because hi mic belonged in the trash.
interviews are rehearsed!!!?? I feel violated, how can i ever trust again?
Correct me if I'm wrong but if genuine interviews is what you seek, look no further than Craig Ferguson.
This wasnt an interview. It was a sketch.
If you young ones haven't seen the film The Jerk watch it tonight
Their skin's so shiny without make-up.
He's just moisturised
Martin sounds just like Letterman
Not all interviews are scripted. This was a bit they wanted to do with production and graphics and costumes. It needed to be rehearsed. Most don't.
didn't know these were rehearsed...?
Edward Butcher exactly. Its sad but true
ROFLMAO! Conan SHOULD do the top 10 in his style now that Letterman's retired.
I get that bits like this have to be written beforehand and everything but is the whole interview always rehearsed?
Reharsal? for a 5 minute interview? my life is a lie...
This wasnt an interview...
So I guess the A/C was out that day during the rehearsal.
What?!?
The top 10 list was actually not predicted and instead arranged before the show?
I am shocked.
Wait a minute... THEY REHEARSE?!? I thought it all happens on one take. (Sarcasm)
lol, who the hell was playing paul shaffer?
Someone turn the AC back on.
It's not scripted to a tee. they do need to rehearse bits that would involve the interviewee and a skit they're trying to insert within the interview
Ross Perot was right too.
I really really really want to know why they always chew gum in the rehearsals? Is that a security measure so they can quickly tell from the rushes if something is a rehearsal?
don't show us this, I love maintaining the allusion
Its funny how fake everything is on tv. But still conan is funny as hell
Wow how can Conan laugh again on the show?
so shiny
anyone who can't tell these things are scripted, at least to the point where topics are pre-selected, you're not very switched on. It's bloody obvious.
They have to rehearse their answers. They have a few minutes to interview and you cant have conan be like "So did anything funny happen on the set of your movie?" and then the celebrity be like... "um no not really." Silence.
My Father went to high school with Steve Martin. Says he was 'A Jerk'... Ba da bum...
i love these scraps try and keep doing them trust me
I also have opinions on stuff!
The actual bit:
