  • England are the favourites to win UEFA Euro 2024, despite never having won the Euros before, and their defence being hit by an untimely injury crisis.
But how much attention should we even pay to the odds?
Well, from France at Euro '92, who went out in the group stage, to Spain at Euro 2012, who were crowned as champions, HITC Sevens takes a look at how the pre-tournament favourites have performed at every UEFA European Championship.

Simple: Jose Mourinho. As much as I dislike him, I can't deny that he had a massive impact on Real in the Champions League.
Prior to him joining Real, they were absolutely diabolical in the CL, getting knocked out in the round of 16 constantly. Then he arrived, and in his three years, the team managed to make it to the semis all three times, setting up a precident.

3:47 As a Dutchman I have to correct you there, the Netherlands absolutely was NOT a European powerhouse of football in 1957. In the period between the 2nd world war and 1974 we never qualified for a tournament even a single time. Only when Cruijff and his generation came onto the scene in the late 1960s started the Netherlands to become relevant in world football.

17:00 The fact that Euro 92 was Eric Cantona's only international tournament is a travesty. I think I've requested a couple of times a video on the best XI of players never to have played at a World Cup, and Cantona for me would be a shoo-in.

    • @SantomPh
      @SantomPh 7 дней назад

he was always on bad terms with the French FA, and being banned for the kung fu kick in 1995 meant he was banned for a long time and went out of Euro 96, which would have been his "home tournament"". French failure to beat Stoichkov's Bulgaria was also completely Cantona and co's fault. Cantona famously declared his support for his Man U teammates and England instead of England. He also started supporting French Rugby and beach soccer, losing interest in playing for his country.
The rise of Zidane and the eventual 1998 WC winning team and 2000 Euros winners meant that Cantona, Ginola, Papin and those of their generation were mostly out of contention for places.

Roy Hodgson from England was the coach back then, our whole nation is still thankful for him, since then the team has made all the Euro's and the last 5 World Cups. But with all the international players we have now, they could start performing up to potential once, we may need another British coach to teach us some more football.

Due to the fact you don't grow up watching the players you sometimes know the names and their legendary status but rarely can imagine the whole squad. This can lead to you thinking that the current squad is the best.
However thinking back that we once brought a team starring Sepp Maier, Beckenbauer, Breitner, Schwarzenbeck, Hoeneß, Boonhof, Vogts, Netzer, Grabowski, Heynckes & Müller there is no doubt in my mind that this is the best German national team of all time.

    Why are England favourites?
We have a world class striker (who also has a world class trophy curse). We have one of the best right wings in the world. We have one of the best DM's in the world. And we have about 500 amazing 10's.
Like seriously, people seem to think we are an amazing team because we have 750 really good 10's, but you can only play one 10 (maybe 2 at a push in the right system).
We literally have an amazing player in 4 out of 11 positions. Thats nowhere near enough.
Yes, Stones is quality and so is Shaw. But gran has played more football then the pair of them combined in the last year, and shes been dead for 20 years. Walker has been on a hard decline for the last year. There are some talented players, but Mainoo has barely played a professional game for each year his been alive, Wharton is the same. Eze and Gordon are solid on the left, and could be fantastic, but its all if buts and maybes and neither has proved anything yet.
International football is all about the defence and WE HAVE NO DEFENCE. And its barely an injury crisis imo at this point, Stones has barely been fit the last two years at least, Luke Shaw has been injured so much for so long that I think Mainoo probably has more total United appearance then him now.
England is a bang average team at best, with a few absolute stars, most of who all want to play in the same part of the pitch and therefore don't work well together.

Not accurate. Germany and Spain were both considered top favorites before 2012. It was a 50/50 going in definitely not clear for Spain. I remember well everyone said Germany was just as good and they were. They got 9 points out of the group of death and only lost to a Balotelli masterclass

Most people completely misunderstand what bookie odds mean. They certainly don't reflect the probability of an event happening. They reflect the betting patterns of the punters. So if England are favourites, it's because there's more money on England to win it than anyone else. That's a reflection of the delusion of the punters, not the probability.

Didn't think it was possible but this lowered my opinion of Southgate. You describing how hard it was to qualify for old tournaments really does hilight how easy a task Southgate had in comparison and how meaningless the "most successful manager in x years" line is.

I'd honestly take the older format of the tournament, at least before the era of travel packages for overseas fans, having half the confederation qualify seems to dilute the qualifiers a fair bit

Alfie, just one correction. Saying "Czechs" in context of 1976 is incorrect. The country that won was Czechoslovakia (not Czechia) with 7 out of 11 starters being Slovaks. Next time please be so kind and use correct terms. Other than that good video.

I don't think there are any stand out favourites for this tournament, the gap between the traditional top Euro nations and the rest is not what it was, and seeing as this competition is really a knockout tournament (only a handful of teams not getting out of groups), i think in one off games with the possibility of dubious VAR penalties it will be really difficult to predict results.

The bookmakers’ odds just represent how many people are backing the teams. If everybody backed a complete outsider the bookmakers would adjust the odds to make sure they wouldn’t lose too much money if that team actually won. There’s a reason you hardly ever see a poor bookmaker

Their defence is weak, Southgate has them playing safe, they’re not very cohesive and they only have one really exceptional player (Jude Bellingham).
