I bought my wife one of these two weeks ago and this is one "bad ass" 250!! I'm very impressed with it at low speeds, its acceleration, and at cruiser speeds. I have to agree that it is a great bike for beginners.
I have this bike (2009 model). Contrary to what you've been told about 250s, it handles the freeway just fine. I use it to commute on a daily basis, doing 70-75 mph for ~15 miles both ways. I've only had it about a month, but I've also driven it 140 miles all freeway as well. I changed the gearing on the front sprocket (15 teeth instead of the stock 14 teeth) so it turns lower revs on the freeway, and it feels effortless between 70-75.
Dont know, never tried but has done 110kmph on the freeway. Wouldnt recommend it for that, go bigger cc's if you need it for freeways. Great around town, keeps with easily with traffic and has great torque if you push the revs.

You will love it. Mine feels like a new bike after 800ks, I thought the run in was a crock but it really does open up. Let us know how it goes.
