  • I have seen so many videos lately on "how to dress old money' , or 'how to style old money', and it made me think about why we should be trying to dress in a way to portray ourselves as something different, to fit in with people who most likely, don't want us in their club. I am never going to be old money, I have worked and earned everything I have, and I don't accept that is something to apologise for, or somehow lesser than someone who is old money, in this video I talk with you about why I am new money and not apologising for it.

All Dollies - I was raised Old Money. The only thing that says that you are refined and cultured is that you treat everyone, including yourself, with precious dignity. I wish New was exchanged with Vulgar. Anyone can choose Dignity. Anyone can choose Vulgarity. The age of one's fortune does not translate into Kindness and Empathy. I know plenty of Old Money Vulgarians and and plenty of 'New' discreet Angels

I’m new money, but I like the “quiet luxury/old money” aesthetic as people call it. I don’t want to pretend to be something I’m not - and no one would believe it the minute I opened my mouth lol - but I am really just attracted to the timeless style. I just want something that I feel comfortable in and don’t need to waffle too much over each day. My friend once joked I looked like I was heading to the Hamptons for the weekend and I replied only if I was there to clean homes. Great video!

Back in the day, I met the old Lord Lever and the old Duke of Westminster. One was well mannered and considerate, the other was more brash and arrogant. One acted like the gentleman he was towards us, the other not so much.
While education can be difficult (but not impossible) with limited funds, manners are how you respect other people and have nothing to do with money (new or old) or the lack of it!

I like your honesty. I'm from one of those families (and there are many of us) that *were* old money and are now no money 😅 I have never judged people by how much money or anything else that they had or have. I judge people by these criteria, being kind to others, being polite, understanding and accepting differences. This whole dress code thing is ridiculous. It is totally antiquated. You can spot 'old money wannabes' from a mile off. No-one is better than anyone else, we are all thankfully different! I love a logo and I love a bit of bling and I dress for me, I don't care what other people think 🥰

Certain RUclipsrs started out with Primark hauls and now have large properties in the countryside and try to be "county"; they may dress the part, but their accents, vocabulary and behaviour give them away. Hi Amelia!! I've never really worried about what people thought about how much money we have. I've reached the age where I want to know the person, not their monetary worth. As my husband and I aged, the better off we were, but I agree we didn't want our children to be spoiled and have an attitude that they were better than others. All we can do is hope we've taught them morals with kindness mixed in! Great topic, thank you.💕☺️🇨🇦

Greetings from Finland, so happy that I found your channel 😊. Concerning this toppic, for some reason some people seem to think that they are better and their opinions matter more. It is easy to criticize us who love brands and logos, because the logos are visible. However, that is simply bullying and bad behaviour. It is never ok to judge someone because of how a person looks or what she wears.

That's my peer group, and they can see and be like "hey girl, we see you with that Cute Puuurrse!" and I can be like "mmmhmmmm". Forget old money or new money, I'm 'barely money'. Money is just money. I’m glad you don’t let it ruffle you. I do find it ironic - in this whole discourse - that when we take a step back and look at “old money”, we find that significant portions of old generational wealth came from methods many of us would consider abhorrent today (slave labour, indentured servitude etc.). The individuals with that wealth today may be truly wonderful people, and may do a lot of good in the world, but it’s hardly appropriate to look down on new money (or it’s associated aesthetic) as somehow déclassé or bad.

I actually have much more respect for those who are new money and are self-made with grit and hard work. I don’t think bragging about coming from old money and having it all handed to you as something to be proud to. I find people who work hard for what they have much more inspirational and actually something to aspire to. You can’t aspire to old money.
I grew up in social housing with both parents working all the hours god sent and often having to take us to work with them because they had no one to help them. They have made such a good life and really worked hard to build new money and my parents are the very foundation of my own work ethic and motivation.

My money is my money, my husband and I earned it coming from a very humble background, and gosh I’m so proud of ourselves. I will wear what I love and let people talk if they want to, I don’t care. But what I’m seeing online is mostly people that cannot afford a certain lifestyle that try to put others down by stipulating they are not old money. Last time I checked, wherever I go, they gladly accept my new money. Ha ha

Sounds like you’re raising your kids right! I laugh at this “old money” term. My law clients over the years varied from new parents with no money really to well into 8-figures. The only ones who dressed in that “old money” style were in what I’d call the “aspiring, working hard group” to those having maybe 2-3 million. Over that amount, and people did whatever they wanted - as they should! Tbh, my very wealthiest clients never looked it. One guy I liked a lot, so down to earth, always wore old Wrangler jeans and cheap golf shirts, but he did like to always drive a new Ford truck. Our wealthiest client had a personal driver for his Cadillac because his own age/health prevented him - other than that, if you saw him, you’d think he was just a nice little old man, not someone worth $100m.

Further, once the mania has died down, Old Money dressing will be rightly accused of being lazy. 6 VERY expensive outfits in white, beige, grey, black, taupe and navy might sound posh but in its way, is boring. I can close my eyes, pick an outfit and literally look like a couple of thousand bucks without ever being interesting. And Amelia, it hurts me when you doubt yourself. Everyone, confidence is the sexiest sword we've got. Swing it, with magenta streamers in the end.

Guuurrl! I am with you. Old or new who cares. Just be yourself. And another thing…quiet luxury is not a trend people…do I need to keep screaming this. It has been around forever. Max Mara, Laura Piano, Hermes…..nothing wrong with wearing a bunch of neutrals and classic cuts..again people this is not a trend it has been around and is a classic way of dressing. I have been buying luxury off and on for over 30 years. Dress the way that makes you feel good about yourself and please have some fun with it. Personally I like to wear a bit of logo now and again. Yes I am that woman who just bought a Gucci logo blazer and I love it. It is not everyone’s cup of tea and I don’t care. Will most likely wear it with a pair of neutral trousers or shorts. I agree…that old money country club set is not anything I aspire to. Besides I am a woman of color here in the US and that automatically disqualifies me from being part of those groups. I could be a billionaire and it would not make a difference to those people. Like the song says “They Not Like Us!”.

As for style, I think it comes down to personality. I'm an introvert, and my style reflects that and is more minimalistic. I don't just wear neutrals, and I love my pops of red, there is undeniably the odd logo in there for good measure. If pushed, I'd say my style is smart casual, with an emphasis on elevated basics. It's not about being perceived in a certain way.
In my opinion, people who have more logos and colour in their style tend to be more extroverted. And if they're comfortable with their style, it'll shine out, and they'll look great.
I'm not saying that there aren't people who conform to the old money/ new money stereotypes there is usually some truth in all stereotypes, and that's totally fine, but we should be a little bit careful of using these stereotypes to look down on others. Especially if they're not trying to be something they're not!

Personally I’d rather be new money. I’m not new money yet but I’m working on it. My parents instilled a very good work ethic in me and that’s something I value in others. I’d rather be middle class and hard working than rich and lazy

New money, and i dont like logos. But i also dont like prints. I just like solid colored clothing that i can easily mix and match without taking up brain space with my bags being a pop of color.
I also think it's silly to try and fit into an aesthetic. I say find a style that works for you and enjoy it! Fashion should be fun.

While I probably personally prefer the "old money" aesthetic, I think it's a silly concept. I wear what I like with zero thoughts on what it's communicating to others, I don't dress to impress other people. Even though your style is different from mine, I appreciate your collection, I think your pieces are beautiful, and I love that you're unapologetic about who you are and what you love.

Last year I literally had allergy to the "quiet luxury" term.. but now I calmed down (as it thankfully is slowly going away) and I realized that the people on social media make it hateable. When you see so many videos and people almost telling you that you should be doing this otherwise you are... almost stupid I would say, it gets on my nerves. But it is just a trend and I actually loved to learn about how "old money" people dress, it´s like a fashion history class? It´s intresting to me and I think if I ever happen to be around this type of peole I will be more prepared(?). I take it as a trend and for fun I might try to create a couple of outfits because fashion is fun and let us create a persona and live it for a day ;) Like you are not a princess but it´s nice to have an occassion to put on a ball gown and feel like a princess. But the problem is (I think) that some people take it too seriously and follow like a religon... try to fit in where they don´t belong because they think they should... and that´s bit a fashion issue but a psychological problem. Ps. I´m also on the loud and colorful side but I love playing with outfits and trying different styles :)

The idea that "poor" people buy from the big designers annoys me. you're not poor if your spending 2k-5k for a basic purse. not all of us have that generation wealth, but like we're not in poverty. the uber rich in england still buy from chanel, dior, hermes, etc. all these big brands basically depend on a split between the uber rich (either new or old) and the upper middle class.

The thing I find amusing is when you see all these videos about old money style etc is your clothes won't ever show how much money you have or in what neat category someone wants to put you in.... At some point in your life you will have sat next to one of the wealthiest people and you wont even have noticed/ remembered them. Style hasn't got anything to do with money directly. Just because you want to wear a louis vuitton speedy I don't think it makes you look rich, it just makes it look like you spent two grand on a handbag! And why shouldn't you! Its just expressing your individual style. I always notice peoples handbags and I think they tell stories, the truth is you don't know the story. Its very satisfying to save each month a buy your dream bag, If you could just afford anything the whole process would become less fun/ special. the best feeling it working hard and you knowing yourself you earned and can afford sed item! x

It’s also funny when people ascribe one look to a group of people because most groups are not a monolith. There are “truly wealthy” people who love luxury brands too 😂 Also, “old money” won’t accept someone just because they wear minimal logo-free clothing. If anything, they would value education and character more than someone’s “look.”

If Louis Vuitton erased the monograms and their bag was just brown and the name was just the hardware, I'd be happier. They tend to put huge LV on some bags that are more simple but I swear that's not necessary. People see tiny stud earrings as much as they see the big studs. It's unnecessary to make the logos so big and obvious. It's tacky and that's nothing to do with old or new money.

Honestly I think that the great thing about having money is the freedom it gives you. Why should you or anyone change to be a member of a group that doesn’t allow you the freedom to be yourself but a carbon copy of what it is deemed acceptable?
Anytime I read that some luxury brand is for poor people pretending to be rich, it blows my mind that even nowadays with so many people struggling to cover the increase of living costs, some people seem to believe that a poor person has the disposable income to buy a 2-5 thousand euro bag.

It's just a way to bring out people's insecurities imo. Personally I would not wear luxury, quiet or otherwise, simply because it doesn't align with my values. The rare times I've experimented with buying something luxury, I actually felt embarrassed when I wore it or drove it. My mom was flashy in her style and she loved the spotlight. I don't. It's just personal preference.

OK… We more or less subconsciously dress how we like to see ourselves and how we want others to view us. As long as your style feels authentic to you, I don't think it matters if you present as new money, old money or no money.
Trying to fit in is hard work, it's much better to be yourself. People respond to realness. You can have great friendships even if you don't "fit in", or maybe because you don't.
I'm on the quieter side of luxury, but I don't look conservative or have that air of generational wealth. 🙃

My father was new money, a hard-working self made man. He wanted us to have everything in life so we grew up in a thoroughly old money environment and got old money education. I find it hilarious that people want to look like old money. Most are insecurity-ridden, have serious problems like everyone else and are not particularly stylish. Do some look chic? Sure. There's absolutely nothing special about old money people except for the vast privilege their money and circle afford them. And they'll never let you in if you cosplay them, if anything they respect you even less. Just be who you are, don't fantasize about other people's lives. You know nothing about them. If you want to have what old money people have? Go out and create your wealth, money talks.

You know? Old Money only matters to those who actually have it. If a wing of a university, or hospital, or library is named for your family, you might be part of the club. In the US, are you FFV (First Families of Virgina)? Can you get into the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution)? Do you spend your summer in The Hamptons? Then you just might be a socialite!
Myself? I'm 'used to have money but still have cool stuff'. lol 😅
But for real? As far as styles go, I like certain aspects of that aesthetic if I feel like dressing down. Then the next day, I will be completely opposite. I go by what I like. Not 'aesthetic'.

This whole topic on old money/new money is so out of touch. AT LEAST WE HAVE MONEY. So many people in the world in the poverty/below poverty line that we should just be grateful we have that money at all. And these people dictating on Social Media and RUclips about how to dress old money, and how you are poor and cheap if you like logos--ARE NOT FROM OLD MONEY. So what do they even know except examples from Succession and the fact the likes of Bill Gates wears low key clothes. How immature can you be? It is destroying personal style--which is what it boils down to. There was a time when you actually had to buy Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, watch Sex and The City and that inspired you to find your own style. Now you have trashy Reels & RUclips videos of people who have no background in Fashion History / Fashion Editing trying to tell you what to wear. It's pathetic. Also, as someone who went to private school all my life in my country, "old money" aesthetic is more layered than that. I had classmates who were at the Top 1% wealthy circles who HAD to wear low key clothes because there were kidnapping issues. There's also people of old wealth who wear low key clothes when they are OUTSIDE to keep a low profile but dress differently when they are safely just around their own circles. This aesthetic also only works for the OLDER PEOPLE with old money. If you actually research what 1% wealthy kids in the Gen Z and Gen Alpha generation are wearing, some of them (not all) with Instagram profiles--they like to flaunt their logo bags just as we do because they are old money but YOUNG and have different tastes now too. All in all, this topic is incredibly immature and not well-researched at all. So don't even believe it. Embrace your own personal style!

The whole old money/new money thing is ridiculous. I was watching a video from You tuber So Anesu. It is called “Bernard Arnault needs to be stopped.....” Take a look and you can see an example of how the super wealthy spend some of their money. Yachts and champagne. People who do have generational wealth can waste a lot of money too. Seems to me like we are all human and most of us are trying to fit in, whether it’s aspirational and buying logos or blowing money on magnums of champagne.
