    We have three of those mowers like that one. We change blades daily when they are running. Some times more often still when cutting bahia grass in the summer. There is no problem with lifting this mower by the deck like this. We use a cordless 19 volt impact to change them.
    One trick I also find for safety is make sure you are on level ground of course and DO NOT lock the parking brake because the mower needs to roll forward slightly as you raise it to keep it from being puled off of the jack.

      thanks for you input. A lot of good thoughts. Sounds like you are cutting a lot of grass. Bahia can be a real blade duller

      What kind of blades do you use?

  • @jekjr1957
    @jekjr1957 8 лет назад +21

    ONE MORE SAFETY THOUGHT HERE: Under no circumstances do you want to try to reach under neath the mower to hold backup when using the impact. The blades will at times spin and it would be like the mower was running if you had your hand underneath it. It works incredible on a Scag especially though.

    My Bad Boy Outlaw has receiver hitches front and back. I used some heavy walled 2" square tubing to make a "lifting tool" that slides into the receiver hitch and ninety degrees straight down (actually leans back toward the mower so it is straight up and down when the jack is about half lift). The bottom of it is just high enough for the floor jack to slide under. Works great for a lifting point. I can also flip it up and use it to push with.

    Ten years ago I got lucky and bought a second hand Walker as my very first ride on, and it became my reference for "easy", and this isn't easy.
    On a Walker it's a matter of sliding two pins then flipping the deck up 90 degrees (one hand lift) and then the rest is done from the comfort of a garage stool. If I had a pneumatic socket driver the whole changeover (two blades) would probably take 30 to 45 seconds. No jack, stands, or eyeballing from ground level.
    The more I look at other ZTs the more I appreciate Walker as an inspired piece of design. Unfortunately I can't afford to buy one first hand.

    Not wanting to blow up your feed but this is one thing we do daily also. If you have a bolt on one of these Scag mowers that the nut gaulds on so that it won't come off, you can take a 18" wafer blade on a 4 1/2" side grinder and cut it off in a very short time and replace the bolt and you are back running. Where as if you have one that the threads mess up that threads from the bottom into the spindle, you have to change the whole spindle. This would require much longer down time and much more work to get it back running. We have had this happen twice on Scags over the years. They are incredible mowers for many reasons.

    I use anti seize compound on spindle blade bolts, I had one seize up on me, I had to cut it off. We even used heat to try and loosen it, It won't budge I had to cut down on the sides of the nut and us a chisel to pry it off of the threads, it was that bad, some people go crazy using impact air tools. I use a breaker bar, because don't want to spend 3 hours trying get the nut off, I was lucky it was a outboard blade, I replaced all three bolts and nuts because they all looked like they were in rough shape on a low hour machine, that was on a 2006 Wildcat that was a home owner machine. Great mower best money I ever spent.

    • @lawncarelife

      +Raymond Farwell thanks for sharing. Once I took mine to a mechanic who worked on big trucks. He used heat and a serious impact wrench to get the blade off

    • @customowing
      @customowing 8 лет назад

      I tried that and it wouldn't budge and I didn't want to damage the bearing in the spindle housing. So I had to cut the nut off down the sides. I went to my dealer he was out of the bolts the same with two others. I got them on line.

      Scags been having issues with blade bolts bending like butter because that spacer they have designed into the blade mounts it weakens the bolts all the Scag guys are bending them left and right across US according to all the post on LS, my buddy 30mins away just got one a new TT and it is doing the same thing.... Still a beast of a mower one of the top out there with Deere.Pretty much the top 2 all around overall condition cutters + stripers... being thick/wet/dew/rain whatever not much build up in decks the 7Iron does stay cleaner but Scags Vel decks are just right under them.
      Way it looks all the Gravely guys have dropped their fleets and gone to JD for the better 3/4 of the nation for some reason up north Scag or JD is not selling people are sticking to their exmark fleets in that thick nasty treated stuff double/triple cutting along with Gravely but the G's do it in all conditions pretty much you will see a unit here and there that actually cuts half up to par but that company is going down the drain fast rightfully so

    There's no need to put that kind of strain on the front of the deck and jam it up under the frame. The deck wasn't intended to be a lifting point. I use a piece of 1-1/2" square x 3/16" thick tubing with a rubber pad glued on each end to span between the two front forks. The rubber pad protects the paint. Then, jack the mower up the same as you did. Once it's raised, you can place your jackstands under the square tube for safety. This way, the deck is free to hang naturally and there is never a strain placed on the deck or the leveling mechanism, that might be able to twist it. Instead of the square tubing, you can substitute a 2x4 or two.

      @VaHokieYT 9 лет назад +6

      Richard Manzo This is a Scag. It's not made from stamped steel. Lifting like this puts no strain on the mower. Read up on them.

    • @martianshoes
      @martianshoes 9 лет назад +4

      Richard Manzo Despite the robust construction of this machine and the Kubota that was mentioned...I still would not jack up any machine by an attachment. I cannot see that passing muster in the workplace, for certain. I am sorry Mr. Johnso, no disrespect intended to you but I believe that this approach is not safe and not a good idea.

    • @jekjr1957
      @jekjr1957 8 лет назад

      That is exactly right Wade Johnson. I have a Tiger Cat 52" that was bought in 2014 that has around 900 hours on it and has been raised like that daily since it was bought and some days more than once and it has suffered NO damage. The Scag is not built of stamped metal and it hurts nothing to raise it that way.

      You clearly have never seen a Skag up close. This mower cannot be damaged, nor harmed. Compared to the flimsy ass Deere junk they sell at Lowes, this is light years better than that. The deck alone on this mower weighs 1/2 of what the entire Deere mower does.....Try it.

    Great video and very proper. I however use a CORDLESS IMPACT WRENCH with the 15/16 in socket. You can do this at the jobsite on your trailer. Sometimes you hit a rock and have to change only one blade. This is very fast and efficient, and are not restricted to changing blades at your shop

    • @MrLmm001
      @MrLmm001 8 лет назад

      Who said anything about recharging. I already knew that and have been doing this for years and continue to do it. My snap on 14 volt impact also takes up less space and will out do any craftsman 19 volt, and lasts longer. I also still have a GASOLINE powered AIR COMPRESSOR on my trailer for any air powered repairs on the mowers including sharpening. Also EXCELLENT for tires on the mower, the trailer and I have fixed customers tires ON SITE when they picked up a nail and had a flat.

    I would never raise any mower by the deck, not good.. Scag mower blade bolts are the hardest to loosen that I have ever owned I hate when its time to sharpen the blades u need a torch get them off.

      Thanks for sharing. I've had several people tell me that. It is never caused me any problems but I do think getting a mower Jack would probably be a better solution long-term

    Yup, exactly the blades I use. Most people try to sharpen their blades, but this is stupid. A NEW set of blades costs $32 delivered to the door. These mowers cut with raw tip speed- making them razor sharp is a complete waste of time- and money because they become far too fragile....and out of balance.

    That looks like way to much work, I don't like to stand sit or lay on my back or jack things up and I hate jack stands or air tools as takes way to much time hooking up the air hose then you got to put all this crap away when your done and then you got to wash your hands, no thanks but I will hire you to cut my 20 acre yard for 20 bucks.

      I have mowed for people like you- ONCE. Fakers, bullshitters, the worst customer. The people who love to brag but then take 8 weeks to pay you, because their electric is out.

      auxz: Funny stuff kid, lol. I don't like to take people's order at the drive through, make tacos with a caulk gun, and be stingy with the hot sauce, but that's why we hire you to do it.
