- Well... It's been 13 years since I posted this video. JJ is now 21 years old, a college senior, and heading to law school. And.... He is 6'2" tall!
I have been totally blown away by the number of views of "JJ's Steamer". As I write this, there have been almost 6 million views. So... Now that I am retired, I am considering creating a website with construction photos, along with some detail videos on how I built the locomotive. There will not be detailed construction drawings, just lots of photos, videos added monthly, and descriptions of the various systems. I will also list the details of the key components (smoke machine, motor, batteries, electrical, smoke plumbing, etc.), Here is my question:
Would you be interested in subscribing to the website? It would be a low-cost annual subscription and I would also make myself available to answer questions. If so, let me know.
Thanks so much for all the kind comments!

What a lucky son and what a wonderful Dad! Almost 30 years ago I made a pull-along steam loco in which my daughters could ride. My intention was to make some trucks to bring back coal to our riverside cottage in the Candover Valley, in Hampshire, England (the coalman wouldn't come up our lane to deliver) but I never completed the job. My (poor) effort pales into insignificance when I see yours! You've got something to remember for ever there! Congratulations and have a happy 2012. Rob.
This video is as old as I am. Nice build.
I remember watching this video when I was a little child. Great video.
It has been so long since I last saw this video... I still remember drawing a picture of this train.
Wow. How cool. Glad you enjoyed it
That train is fantastic. You are an amazing Dad. Wish my son's father could build him something even half as cool. My son loves the engine, too.
Impressive beyond words - what lucky children you have! I'm trying to build a small locomotive/tender for my grandson - I CAN'T let him see THIS!! Thanks for letting us share your triumph!
DUDE IT WAS SUCH A LONG TIME SINCE I WATCHED THIS!!!!!
33 gal steel drum, PVC pipe, copper pipe, poplar wood, oak trim, 1 hp DC motor w/16:1 gear reduction with pulleys, 12" bicycle wheels, digital sound chip, line level booster, autio amp, speakers, 28Vdc smoke generator, custom computer to regulate smoke and snychronize chuffs to wheel rotation, 3 12Vdc wheelchair batteries, lots of electrical switching, smoke plumbing, & lots of LOVE
That thing to me looks incredibly awesome! I remember watching this as a little kid also wanting this!
A Children's Futureristic Playful.
I always wanted this when I was younger and I still do!
Thanks!
It is quite cool.
Awesome little road locomotives!😃🚂 I really love it!❤️
adorable little engine!
Even though it doesn’t run on railroad track. And instead runs on roads.
@shfeher I can totally appreciate the time, effort, love, and money involved in such a beautiful project. I have a permanent train/village display in my basement that I have worked on since 2004, so whatever you spent does not surprise me...but it's worth every penny! Any other projects in mind?
Wow! What a great dad you are!! I am a real train lover, and can just imagine how much fun you had building it and how much fun it is for your son to be able to enjoy it! How fast can the locomotive go? You did a beautiful job!
That's pretty friggin' AWESOME!! NICE JOB!! One thing I would do is to put a blower fan to force the smoke up out of the stack better. Beautiful paint job too.
@shfeher wonderful ! how cool and what a great hobby hope your son liked it as much as my son enjoys the video! awesome!
Now I wish I was JJ, You must be a good father and you son must be so thankful to have you, As you build him a locomotive!
Wow! Very nice!
A working bell AND smoke!
Choo-choo matched the wheel revolutions at some times.
Could only be.tter if the children pedaled the locomotive for their own exercise benefit.
(In our neighborhood there are two young overweight boys who havelectric or gas powered Razors(?). Of all kids, they should be PEDALING bicycles.
You sir are my hero. I would kill to have one of these for my kids.
My son loves this... and now wants one. ;-)
ah yes! i remember this watching back when i was 4 using my Iphone!
i remember i was watching some cool train vids in that time when this popped up!
welp, in memory of this, i'm making it in GMod!
It's awesome! My 4 year old son is obsessed with trains and insists that I get him this train! He's going to be extremely disappointed!
Someone needs to do the samething like this but with the Polar Express
Or a shay loco
*#999* 🖖🏻
i got this on my recommended 12 years later lol
Broseph this is so cool why did it take me 13 years to find this.
Idk
Hello very very cool I wanted to ask where you get this steam locomotive from. Thank you
From the boiler it looks like an oil barrel so its homemade
You, my friend, are a damn genius!!! That is the single coolest anything I've ever seen anyone build for their loved ones. I'm damn serious. Congrats man. Congrats.
All Aboard woo woo and wonderful job that is 1 locomotive job I'm Impressed choo choo Santa
imagine using that to plow your drive way
You guys are the luckiest boys on 🌏! For a drivable locomotive!
AMAZING!!! I bet your son loves that magical creation ULTRA GOOD JOB FOR THE CREATION!!!!
Glad to make your kids happy.
I wish I had this as a kid
OMG That looks so fun!!! Lucky!
I wish my dad would've built me something like this when I was a kid. ;__;
You should patent & market that puppy !!! Very coll...
I never thought I'd be jealous of a kid! LOL. Nice work!
People should make things like this more often especially with real cars
Very nice! Nobody commenting seems to understand how much labor and money is involved lol
unbeliavable! Great work!!! Oh I wish I could get one for my son!
I haven't seen this video in so long! If I had the know-how, I'd build one of a UP Big Boy, to haul hay to the barn out of the field.
That is one serious cow catcher, This old cow would be getting out of the way when your son is barreling down the road!
My dad built me a train about that size from plans in Popular Mechanics! Mine wasn't powered and didn't make sounds. THis is so cool!
that is absolutely awesome! i might need to start collecting parts at a junkyard and build one as well!
I was scrolling through my watch later, then I found my childhood
That is awesome! I agree, I want one
Very nice. Would be cool to build tracks for it around the backyard.
I agree!
One locomotive isn´t a real train until it gets some cars and caboose to pull! =)
I remember that video when I was little
Man you have some skills to build that locomotive.Wow!!!
Thank you
Very nice!
Thank you
Looks like Tweetsie/Yukon Queen. Bell sounds similar, too.
Wonderful! My kids love it! Regards from Holland!
@DiscothecaImperialis It has a 24vdc electric motor with a 16:1 gear reduction ratio. The sound comes from an authentic digital sampling of a real steam locomotive and the "steam" is from a computer-controlled 12dc theatrical smoke generator.
We all need to find out where we can find this train and bye it and ride it right now
Suffice to say, "multiple thousands". The smoke generator alone was $1,200. It was made by a German company and was the only one that would produce the volume of smoke I needed and still run on 28Vdc. Of course it was an ittertive process and I threw away a lot of stuff throughout the development
what a fantastic piece of work!! i would like to know though where did you get the parts, smoker, train whistle, etc.,i want to build one from a garden tractor for our historical society in our town.it will be used to pull a barrel train for the kids on our railroad days fair.
Very genius! NOW lets make the french TGV lol love the video
Next build a wooden track around the back yard to keep the train on an enclose track. They could play all day and you wouldn't have to worry.
@mkblackburn11 Thanks for the encouragement. He is very moivated and goal-oriented. He will definitely earn his Eagle rank. I want him to slow down a bit and enjoy the journey. He is now an ASPL and is working on giving back to the troop. He is in a large troop of 80 scouts.
That is so cool! My son wants one of these now. :(
@two3lights THANK YOU for acknowledging this and pointing it out. When I tell people this cost me more than $10,000 and several years of my life, they just look back at me with cocked heads and puzzled expressions... :-)
@wmstout1 I purchased the parts all over the world. The smoke machine is the only one of its kind because it provides high output on DC power. I found it in Germany and paid over $1,200 for it. The bell is an authentic small scale reproduction of an actual locomotive bell, I found it in the Northest (Mass). The whistle is a digital recording of an actual period locomotive. It took years to pull it all together.
There is no word in this or any other language to describe how much i want one of those...u should let loose your blueprints; judging by other comments i'm not the only one who wants one. Good job!
THIS WAS MY FAVORITE OLD LOCOMOTIVE
I feel like i've watched this before as a kid
That's a very cool trackless train if there was a way to scale that up to an adult size that will be the perfect Mall train
wonderful...
I remember watching this when I was like 8 ,god time flies
Thanks for coming back to see it again. I just retired and am thinking about creating a website where folks can access all my construction photos. I also plan to create videos around some of the more complex assemblies. I will charge a very reasonable annual subscription for access and will also respond to specific questions. Is this something you would interest in? Thanks again for viewing. Skip
Now you can build some little cars behind it to give his dad a ride :P
Simply amazing! I wish I had something like this when I was younger, I probably wouldn't have wanted to do anything but ride in it all day long...(Might just have to build a bigger version for the lil' engineer at heart.. *Grins sheepishly*)
Might I trouble you to ask how it's powered, and how the sounds and smoke are made? I've got all sorts of stuff lying around that'd go great for this.
How did this sneak into my reccomended
dude that is just flipping awesome. How fast can that thing go.
i remember when i was atleast 3 yrs old when i watched tihis
kinda reminds me of Cacy Jr, from the disney movie of Dumbo, but that locomotive you should patent it, its like the best "power wheels" ive ever seen
Now that's adorable reminds me of the six flags over Texas train
Make a tutorial on how to make that drivevable train plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I watched this when I was 4
Me too
me too
Amazing train
I need this badly.
I may be in my late 20s, but as a self-acknowledged railroad nut, I'd have absolutely no problem riding something like this. On a side note, I remember seeing four-wheel vehicles modified to look like kiddie trains at a National Train Day event, but they looked nowhere near as accurate as this creation.
Stussmeister Z.
Yeah I'm sure sure

I've heard about these Smoke Generators being used in miniature trains, but I've never been able to find the company.
@phillygal347 Thanks for the kind comments. It was a 2 1/2 year "labor of love". I have it geared down to only go about 4mph (fast enough for a little tyke). You don't want to know how much money is wrapped up in this. Suffice to say I could have purchased a nice car for the same amount. :-)
That sounds like the sound system on my Lionel class A
This is absolutely fantastic!!! ^_^
I would love to build one of these as Casey Jr.
GHOST TRAIN!!!!!
wow thats wonderfull
Wow man that is awesome, i wished my dad made me one of these :(
I wish I had that train but bigger
0L
He iijjjhiijnnn
Cool loco, man. Needs a tender, though.
Awesome!
That's so cool i want one
That is so very awesome!
Bet this gets the attention of the neighboring kids.
All you need now is a wagon and/or a caboose :-)
awesome i want one!!!
You are a genius!
Okay now that's really freakin amazing. How many hours did u spend on this project? Too bad my 6 foot tall self wouldn't fit in that but I'll leave all that fun up to your son. Fantastic job on a very original idea.
I want this train!!! And also it took me forever to find this video too!!! I watched this video in 2008 or 2009
