Hell yeah! Hear that engine roar! US Army veteran here 💜 it's been over 30 years since I drove one, but you never stop loving it.
i had driven this same kind of truck at south korea army for two years. Your truck condition is amazingly good. i also fix this truck also. I changed tires from wheels by hands. One day i had drove this truck in DMZ for some operations and a fork crane pushed tale gate so it was broken. I ought to replace it. It's good to see this lovely truck again. thank you.
I was in an army reserve mash unit from 1969 to 1975. we had the m35 and the m151 and an m37 dodge 3/4 ton (which was our oldest vehicle and the most reliable vehicle) I was a wheeled vehicle mechanic and spent a lot of time on the highway in our vehicles. great video. nice looking duece and a half.
Speaking of hearing protection, I installed an aircraft intercom in my Deuce. Looked funny with headsets on, but you could have a conversation in the cab. I even put jacks in the back so anyone back there could plug in also.
I would think it not that hard to relocate that vertical muffler assembly some three feet toward the rear...that exhaust tip right outside the passenger window needs relocating.

Man what a trio down memory lane for me. I was in the Army from 89-92. I was infantry 25th ID Schofield Barracks D quad. Hawaii. It was a beautiful sight hearing these beasts coming in the middle of the night. That meant we were riding home that night. Lol thanks for the video

Before I comment further here is a short history on my Driver Training in the US Army.
When I entered US Army basic training I ---like everyone else---took multiple batteries of tests. One of which dealt with driving. Apparently I did well in the driving test? Stay with me....
Much to my surprise in the first week of 'Basic' we were initiated into what was known as “Detail Day”. A day in which our training was interrupted and all members of the Company were assigned (by groups) to particular 'details'.
I learned later that most 'details' had to do with, cleaning things, digging holes, painting things that needed painting, filling and/or moving sandbags, and any other menial tasks that needed to be accomplished.
Well, the group I was in was marched down to the Motor Pool. Where we were introduced to what the Army called the “Duce-and-a-Half”.
It was a two and a half ton truck. In the eyes of a novice like me it appeared to be a damn big truck!
As well, The United States Army intended---nay they INSISTED they were gonna teach me and my buddies how to drive these monsters.
And they were not gonna charge me extra! As a matter of fact they were gonna continue to pay me!
Of course the first 'perk' was that from that day forward on “Detail Day”, while so many other guys were busy painting, cleaning, digging, and filling sandbags, I would be driving a big ass truck.
Now before I elaborate on the future jobs I was able to secure thanks to my Driver Training in the US Army let me say a few words regarding ratings. Having passed the class I was automatically qualified to drive (and received ratings for) ¼ ton jeep, ¾ ton pickup truck, and the more stout M35a2 “Duce-and-a-Half / Multifuel. This was all on my newly minted Military Driver License.
My training on and rating for the M113 (which is the most interesting part of my story) would come later.
Now for my comment on your video.
It is interesting you mentioned the poor performance of the windshield wipers. We drivers were nearly always assigned an 'assistant driver'.
Besides the obvious (taking over for the driver if he is injured) the primary duty of the assistant driver was to manipulate the the flippers at the top of the windshield to MANUALLY POWER the windshield wipers!
This came in handy for me once while in convoy from Fort Jackson SC to Fort Stewart GA. During a heavy downpour that seemed to last half a lifetime my 'assistant driver' (Murphy) worked very hard to make it possible for me to see the road! Later, I bought him a beer for doing such a great job.
At at any rate, thanks again for the video. I just hope that the next time you show someone your magnificent truck you will remember to point out the quirky feature: auxiliary (human powered) windshield wipers. :-D

STill awaiting the M113 tale. Lighter, faster than the M59 due to 1" Aluminum hull even though powered by a single front mounted Chrysler V8 (gas); floated better too. My unit stuck with the M59: power was TWO GMC 6 CYL GAS mounted midships on either side. Carburetor synchronization was real fun. Cooling air forced thru the engine compartments by two heavy fans, shaft mounted and driven by V Belts (prone to break) from engine pulleys. Hydramatic trans fed power into a steerable differential in turn powering the front drive sprockets on the tracks. The weak link V belts to the cooling air fans were the weak links, a contributing factor to the superceding M113. Because my service period ended prior to Tonkin, I never did get to play in amongst the hooches and now get to write this jumbled essay.
Well presented. As a former owner of one of these it was nice to hear someone who actually appreciates and understand these machines.

I own a Prius V & yes it gets crazy gas mileage, but at the end of the day, it's still just a wee little car. It's not a vehicle that I can throw a gutted hog or deer in the back, Where would I put the carcass, next to my daughter's car chair. Or how about being able to tow my 25 foot Boston Whaler ( it's a fishing boat, not a type of endangered marine mammal).
I intend to purchase a Deuce & a half in the very near future to use for hunting, camping, fishing & as work-horse around my ranch.
If you really think about it, hybrids & electric cars are just as bad or even worse then their uncouth & environmentally incorrect fossil fuel devouring brethren.
Consider how much energy is used to build a hybrid, not to mention what type of negative long term effects the old & used hybrid batteries will cause.
At least a beastly Deuce can give Mother Earth a helping hand by feeding on old veggie oil...

The Pentagon called them hybrid/ multi-fuel. You could run unleaded gas ( not av gas) diesel, jet fuel, kerosene,( similar to jet fuel) and just about any light oil, engine will run on crankcase oil their just hard to start.
Ku`i Used hybrid batteries are recycled or refurbished, not simply discarded.

I also have a 1968 M35A2C with winch and C turbo with air assisted power steering. I've owned it for over ten years and it has been a workhorse for me over those years. Easy to work on and fun to own. I live in West Melbourne Florida.

Love the truck. I just bought mine in Alaska. Use to drive them when I first joined the USAF in the early 2000s. Now I'm about to retire and going to restore mine. Love the details in your video explaining upgrades and everything you have done. It was very helpful!

Well done on the restore, I drove the M35A2 and M52A2 when I was in the service. Still painted OD.
I drove the M-109 Van variant because I was a Small Arms Repairer and pulled a two 10k generator trailer into the field. I loved it.

Nice restoration job, and good advice. I have two bobbed deuces and a custom M900 series and am always looking for upgrade options, with the impending winter I like the idea of the heater you installed, very nice.

I have a 1968 M35A2C with the air assist power steering. Would LOVE to get tires and rims like the ones you have! Also the warn-type hubs would be nice as well. I've used my winch a lot over the years I have owned this truck. Living in Florida with hurricanes it's a great truck to have when there's flooding.

Very handsome vehicle and your upgrades are well chosen. I remember many of these sturdy well made "Whistlers" in Vietnam. This is the first time I've ever seen a well turned out "strac'" example. In Vietnam they were usually covered in red mud !

Not hard to one up a Garbage Motor Car (GMC).
two of us soldiers were slowly driving in two separate duces on the bumpy desert of Kuwait towards the paved road (after the war) back in 1991 when suddenly we got this juvenile urge to race! we were bouncing and kicking up dust for about a mike. the guy i was racing against already had several flat tires anyway. it was fun!
a few days later i also had a flat tire, which i changed by myself using only the truck’s tools. the standard tires had inner tubes and could be changed by lifting the rim ring out with a crow bar. to inflate, i mounted the finished tire/rim towards the inside in case the ring would pop out while filling air with the truck’s compressor, which it never did.

This is a very nice truck, congrat! You did a good job on that thing! Some years ago we have a Csepel D344, which is a Hungarian army truck, similar too this M35, but we have to sold that :-/ I miss that thing when I watched this vid. Congrat again, great truck and great job!

Wow! That's awesome! I've been looking at bug out / adventure campers & this or the 5 ton would make a great platform.
HAHA, She might get 11 mpg, but I guarantee if she was pulling 10 tons of whatever behind, she'd still get 11 mpg.
11mpg aint bad. I had a ML55 AMG (which is the racing division of mercedes) with a factory handbuilt racing engine and I got about 6-8 mpg in traffic.. and it uses premium fuel only.
Just like a Diesel should.

See those knobs to tension the windshield tip out? That's what we used to hold m16's, the carry handle fit there perfectly.

Considering how most of those ended up, that's a lucky survivor. It's also fun to see a no nonsense military spec vehicle. It's loud, crude and just about unstoppable. That turbo makes me laugh!

Ryan nice Deuce you have there. I have been collecting military trucks for a few years and have owned a number of Deuces all very good trucks but one thing I always tell folks looking to buy one are the HP rating and the fact that if they are expecting miracles of performance look else where! The Deuce engine makes 134 HP and that is in a 14,000 pound truck, if you doing something with a truck like this and need lots of wheel speed you wont get it here! Concerning the lubrication of the engine and primarily the injector pump I always add a qt of engine oil to every tank of fuel, with todays ultra low sulfur diesel fuel is very hard on the pump. Ryan you were certainly correct on your statement concerning the stock tires, they are know as NDT for non directional tread and they were designed to be somewhat good an ALL surfaces, well in reality really completely SUCK equally on all surfaces, if your not a stickler for originality there is serious improvement options concerning rubber! As far as the "hearing protection required placard" in the cab HELL YES you need hearing protection in a stock Deuce, they are almost deafening cruising down the highway! On my last Deuce I did a 100% resto on it and I rhino lined the inside of the cab up to the back of the seats and all the floor area then I used a FAT MAT under the center floor section on top of the transmission and this reduced the inside noise dramatically to the point you can easily have a conversation inside the truck while driving down the highway, I will be selling this truck this spring. Good video. One item you should cover when explaining the light switch which is slightly to the left of steering column on the dash. If you don't move the top switch from the straight up and down position to the first position to the right, you won't have any brake lights. When that switch is in the "Off" position, no current is running through any wires for your lights. Always move that straight up and down switch at the top one position to the right so you will have brake lights.
Also, when you get more comfortable with the shifting of this vehicle, I can show you how to get a 7 (seven) speed out of a 5 (five) speed transmission.

When my father passed away in 1978 he left me his 1959 GMC 550 dump truck it was faded orange beast of a truck for its time
The air glad hands on the back are also for the different types of trailers this vehicle can pull. All of those have to have air brakes to stop. Been there done that.

Air brakes don't automatically mean it's a CDL vehicle in most states anyways. Hell here in Missouri you can drive a semi on a farm license with no CDL legally(Limited to a 150 mile radius though). A lot of rental trucks have air brakes though and no CDL required.
Garrett Smith you do need CDL in Florida if full air brakes. I believe he said some statex.

That Kaiser LD-465 will run on about anthing that will burn, but the big singles are squirrley one ice/snow/wet roads I'd rather have the duals. Drove these daily in Germany from 75-81 no heaters no boot on the shifter, no hearing protection placard, thats why I can still hear the turbo in my ears 24/7.

im about to be picking up a M35A2 and im going to be doing the MRAP wheel swap and using the exact same XML tires you have there.. you said you can get 65mph out of it like that? i was thinking the waterloo overdrive kit to take it from .85 to .69 and these tires should make it where i can cruise at 65mph,,, what are your thoughts

What about ratios with the bigger tires? And also payload, does it stay the same or do I lose some with the bigger tires? Asking this simply because the 44s look and probably (most likely) are better than the stock tires...
