That’s pretty cool but don't let that distract you from that fact that In 1972, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government they survive as soldiers of fortune. To prove your point, on 9/11 I was in Pearl Harbor. Living on Ford Island. I had just come down stairs from my barracks room. It was about 0310 in the morning. I was planning on grabbing the shuttle from Ford Island to our building up by Schofield Barracks. The first plane had already hit the tower and we were arguing if it was an accident or not. When the second plane came into view, the argument stopped. Everyone ran for my car, piled in and we hauled ass to work before they could shut down the bases. I was also freaking out all day, because my parents were flying the same airline out of Boston to Florida. I didn't hear from them till the next day. Apparently the were taking off and got called back to the gate.

If you know US military at all, you know the importance of failover and redundancy has within the organization. This video focused on 1 system, an old system, that had the responsibility of a very specific part of ICBM defense. The entire ICBM defense is multi-layered, greatly over-redundant, and multi-faceted. Even in its budgeting, it has redundant sources, as Japan is a co-investor to US Missile Defense research. Of all the Destroyers on the East Coast, how many do you think are set up to do missile defense (MD)? The largest naval base in the world is at Norfolk, VA. You have a Destroyer base in the Northeast and one down in Mayport, FL. There are THAD bases all along the coast as well, and lots of Patriot installations, including 1 battery around the WH in DC. There are satellites already in orbit numbering in the thousands doing tasks like detection, identification, and defense. Now consider the numbers being asked to defend against. 10ish launchers in NK, less than that in Iran, China 200s, Russia sub 400 working maintained and active launch vehicles. Outside the US, the only country that is capable of multi-delivery vehicle ICBM is Russia. Russia doesn't do well with this either, as multivehicle setups are responsible for the vast majority of their failures, either in boost or in the re-entry phases. This is why the standard load for a Russian ICBM is a single warhead, with less than 33% of their ICBM capability currently being used is in a multi-warhead multi-target setup. If you know you only have 370ish launches possible in a first strike, and knowing you are not likely to survive the retaliation before you can achieve a second strike, are you going to waste a bunch of those with decoys? Suppose you look at Russia and China's recent revealings to the world on the condition of their launchers, missiles, and the failings of their other "advanced" Tech. In that case, you have to know that even if nothing was done to defend the US, the success ratio would be closer to 50% than it would be to 90% using ICBMs. The newest Russian ICBM hasn't completed a successful whole mission test yet. China's corruption had their own military estimate a greater than 40% fail rate of their systems regarding ICBMs. So a mass barrage to overload the system from China is roughly 120 missiles plus or minus 20, and for Russia, it is about 250 and that is very generous to the numbers that would work. If you look where the US has THAD and its Destroyer patrols you can see that China has a challenging route to hit US, as there are MD mission Destroyers and 3 THAD systems in and around Japan, and that is before you get to the Northwest American defense nets. Neither Russia nor China could hope to hit the US mainland with more than a few dozen warheads, which if you follow MIT's research into nuclear weapons use, you would know the area of complete death and destruction isn't as wide as most imagine. Long-term issues being removed from the conversation, short-term effects wouldn't be enough to cripple the US from making not only its retaliatory strikes(the only country who has the ability to reach the enemy confidently with its other forms of nuclear weapons) but also its ability to reload and maintain war on both a nuclear and conventional aspect. The moment that armed conflict of the levels that nukes would be involved is entered by the US, the life span of every single Russian naval asset would be measured in hours, not days, not weeks, but hours, and even a good majority of these would be measured in minutes. At this same moment, all reachable Russian air assets would be permanently grounded, and any defense system would be targeted for either a nuclear strike or a heavy conventional strike to render them inoperable for a long period of time. Any and all space assets of Russia and its allies would be made useless. These are just the things that would be done early on in the first hours of the war, unlike Russia and China, the US has a Sub force that goes undetected and has incredible stealth use in everything from bombers to fighters to attack air crafter to its missiles, rockets, and glide munitions. While the point of its effectiveness not being 100%, I think its use to render any such attacks as being pointless because of the reaction vs effectiveness, is already 100% and well worth the $ spent.

Additionally, once it gets through the atmosphere, the warhead is released and you could target it then.
The real issue is having a defense system in the area of it's target.
Even the patriot can down hypersonics if it is co-located with the target. It makes it MUCH easier for the system to target the incoming missile/warhead/whatever.

AEGIS has taken down a satellite with an SM3 missile... so if they can locate an ICBM they've got the capability for an ICBM kill. With that system in play... for example, Ticonderoga class cruisers. 13 are active, and each has 2 VLS blocks and can store/launch 122 missiles. They're not all ABM capable, so each has 2-3 dozen missiles that would stop ballistic missiles, so... call it 25, and you've got interception for 325 vehicles right there.
And that doesn't account for the same on the Arleigh Burke class destroyers and whatever other ships have VLS and AEGIS data integration.

Ryan, a missile defense does not need to be 100% to deter an attacker. While even one warhead getting through would be terrible for the defender, a major power (i.e., Russia or PRC) attack would have objectives that they consider worth the risk of retaliatory strikes. Degrade the number of targets hit sufficiently and the first strike becomes ineffective. They risk being annihilated for essentially nothing.
Academics who say it cannot be done do not seem to have suitable metrics for success in place.

    • @tylerbrown4074

The ability to strike back is all theory since its never been implemented during an actual nuclear attack. Also by the time an attack occurred what's the point most would be dead if large scale. If an enemy nation wanted to nuke the US they would first use Nuclear subs to try and stay undetected to attack the capital and any other strategic areas.

He didn't mention the THAAD which is designed to intercept missiles outside the atmosphere. They are deployed in South Korea, Romania, Israel, and the UAE. This system is designed to take down missiles before they leave the air space of the offending country and before any multiple warheads are release. That is why they are deployed close to North Korea, Russia, and Iran. Obviously the one in South Korea also has China covered which is why the Chinese were so upset by it. It's been thoroughly tested and it works. There just aren't enough launchers yet like with all these expensive systems.
There is one other factor involved with ICBMs. The Russians never figured out how to make solid fuel for their ICBMs. They still use the liquid fuel that the Americans abandoned when they developed the Minuteman ICBM. The Minuteman is always ready to go (thus the name), but Russian ICBMs must be fueled just before use because you can't leave a liquid fueled rocket sitting around for very long. The fueling process is lengthy and easy to detect with advanced satellites. That would prompt an American response. Russian tactical nukes are the dangerous ones because they are solid fueled, so the US is safe from them, but I'm afraid Europe is not. They are easier to shoot down though and Patriot was designed for that purpose.

Brother, you ask the right question, always. Referencing American ICBM Intercept Capabilities; America has a plethora of "Tools" that would be deployed, should a threat be considered credible. In short, if not destroyed outright, the ICBM would be effectively disarmed internally, in flight. Simply stating, there is a 1.3% chance of penetration, and a 0% change of detonation on an intended target. This being said; The American Counter would be exact and overwhelming; this means, the launch location of each ICBM, would receive an Atomic, Thermonuclear, Hydrogen, Neutron or EMP response, at roughly the same time the sky above the aggressor would be seized. With-in 12 hours, a 360 degree noose would begin to close the land portion of the aggressor, with-in 96 hour from this point, American families and other organisations would begin sending aid to all injured parties. Soon after, a few countries may find an increase of geographic borders and map changes. All in all, it would be a terrible week.

GMD is only one system, and designed for a specific stage in the flight profile of ICBMs. In the US military, especially in the Navy and Marine Corps, we go by two is one and one is none. Put simply there are layers and other systems that can be used, and we are working on integrating the whole kit and kabootle. For example our destroyers are capable of intercepting during the boost and coast phases of ICBM flight with SM-3 missiles. Just for fun, and to prevent a major hydrazine issue with a dead satellite, a navy cruiser the USS Lake Erie shot it down with one shot. (It is important to note special software patches were needed to go after the satellite since shooting down satellites is a huge international issue. The US had to present the case to the world to do it before hand, and remove the software after the mission was over. This all happened in 2004.) The missile used was an SM-3, which uses a kinetic kill vehicle to intercept the target.

Getting under your desk might help. But we are talking about nukes. Close is all you need to mess things up!! Big boom!! He said SDI my friend. That is the famous Strategic Defense Initiative. It is often credited with helping to END the cold war. Russia could NOT match SDI. Plus they never had the economy. Other than their sale of arms, they had little to offer. Nowadays they peddle resources. And are led by an insane man!! I had an uncle that was in the Air Force and served in Alaska on that early warning system. He told me guard duty was a bitch! So COLD!!!!
The distance from Pearl Harbor to North Korea is 7,204 km. Or 4,476 miles. That is a long-ass trip. Better have some snacks. Ryan as you know the US of A is a system based on capitalism. We like to spend money! And we spend massive amounts on defense. We have several treaties we intend to honor! The U.K. is only one of several. The one that catches my eye these days is with Taiwan. Red Chine likes to act like a bully and rattle their saber. And there are a lot of them (people). I may be wrong, but the Russian military is not as tough as everyone thought. (Ukraine???) I wonder if communist China is the same way? I will admit that red China has a much better business model than Russia. They are one of the U.S.'s biggest trading partners. This stuff is way beyond my pay grade. Thank you Ryan.

I get it, you want the most bang for your buck, but I would rather have a system that's 50 percent than nothing at all. Like you said , security is expensive and there's no easy way around that fact. Furthermore, trying to predict exactly what would happen and how it would play out if the button is pushed is merely just speculation. So doing something now is better than doing nothing or waiting for something better to be developed decades from now. It's all about deterrence.

Our military doesn't rely on GPS anymore, and hasn't for a while. Don't get me wrong, we still use it for almost everything but our high-end missiles use star charts. We did this so we could destroy satellites and not degrade our defense.

The 95-99% iron drone rate was on purpose. Some projectiles they deemed would not hit a populated area so they didn’t target them and let them through. Not 1 projectile hit where human life was in jeopardy.

Another important factor is that Russia may have 6000 ish warheads but probably less than half of those are deployed. A fraction of deployed warheads are on ICBMs. A lot are gonna be typical gravity bombs or tactical nukes. There is also a failure rate that will take out 10% or so.
Point is that Russia isn’t launching thousands of nukes at the USA and the USA is big af.

Hey, Ryan! Been a while! Life's been good, yet very busy. I'm glad you're feeling better and have new projects goin on. Sending my love to you and the family.
If you'd like more info, check out Habitual LineCrosser. He's a former Army tanker(19K) and a current Patriot System Operator/Maintainer?(14E). He also teaches Patriot at the senior level and is quite good at it, hence his channel name lol
His explanations of the history of air defence and missles, along wth the how and why really makes it easy to understand. Of course, certain things he can't discuss, but, as we know, our capabilities are probably better than what you'd learn from Wikipedia.
    😏
Also, his Green Screen playlist is a current event circus and definitely worth a look!

First of doesn’t know anything about it quite frankly most of United States or all the people in the United States. Don’t know anything about this type of system. Just because you haven’t heard about whether it works or not doesn’t mean that it doesn’t, but here you are spilling everything all over the Internet. There’s a lot of things that you don’t know about their country and what their abilities are or able to do. Just keep that in mind people having an opinion opinions are like assholes. The USN's Aegis radar and ship launched Standard SAM system are another mobile ABM combo that have destroyed satellites in orbit in tests, and could likely target slower ICBMs mid-flight. Problem is that any ABM system can be saturated, with results beyond catastrophic.

Hi, how are you Ryan.have read that the us only has 400 or so ICBM interceptors in inventory, that's with a 45% hit rate. T there are lower altitude ( patriot, iron dome ) the hit rate for lower altitude is much better but still can't get them all. The book in your video you should read it.were I got the interceptors info from

You realize this is talking about one specific system that does one specific job. Not to mention the US military isn't just going to give unfiltered access to its missile defense doctrine and systems to someone writing a book. They aren't telling anyone everything they have. Of course, as is said multiple times in the video, no system is 100% foolproof. That is why they have multiple layers and overlapping systems to be as effective as possible. It's like the old saying: better to have and not need, than not have and need...

One point of hope is the U.S. militaries development of Lazer technology weapons systems. They have already deployed working lazer weapons on some U.S. ships and have demonstrated them successfully in destroying airborne objects as well as objects on the surface of the sea.
We can only hope that the technology develops even further into the ballistic missile defense system. Then there would be no limit on how many missiles that the system could engage.

Excellent reaction. The one thing I would note is that America would say what the capabilities are of our KNOWN weapon systems. Unlike Russia, North Korea, China, and Iran, we do not inflate our capabilities of our weapons' as we are a Democracy, and not an Autocracy. Understanding our deficiencies is what forces us to improve upon them to make sure we are sending our children into battle "God Forbid" with the best kit and supply logistics that we possibly can have. America's military is all volunteer, and is very dear to the people. A sense of pride to know that we stand watch, but these are our children, fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, etc... They must have the best that is available. I know other democracies feel the same as well, but we are definitely not like the Russians who do not mind sending waves of their people to die and not caring about it. The US is a democracy after all.

Agreed... Also at the beginning of the video Ryan states how the American Military stuff does pretty well on this channel 0:21
I think I know why (at least for myself). My top 5 reasons for watching would be:
      1. You don't just re-act you also engage your audience.
      2. You actually have a military background to draw experience from.
      3. It's good to get an outside of the U.S. perspective. This makes you slightly better than some American you tube channels.
(Americans complimenting American capabilities is like somebody's mum cheering for them at the big game. It's nice to see, but it is also well know that those cheers are *Heavily Biased* LOL! )
      4. Awesome sense and use of humor!
      5. The beard is pretty awesome, don't ever change it 👍👍👍

The true reason we have so many nuke$ is not what people think. The VAST majority of them are Hydrogen and have almost no fallout/ radiation compared to older Plutonium/ Uranium versions. The reason is weight, and yield. So, if you are super rich or world leader, you prob have a bunker that allows survival.
