  • Thank you Rabbid for the edit!
This movie was filmed in October of 2023 as you can see our cats are a bit younger here lol. I had this in my backlog and never got around to the edit. This film is amazing and made us so uncomfortable. Which is great!

Toni Collette not getting an Oscar is common for her whole career. She's Australian and doesn't know the right people in Hollywood, so she rarely has been nominated. Since the Oscars are just a big popularity contest. People just vote for who they know or are friends with, and if you're not apart of the club, then it doesn't matter how talented you are.

one thing you may have missed and a lot of people do at first is at 35:23 when it goes from day to night time it may seem like a normal transition at first but if u look closely you can see all the worshipers surrounding the house. When u see it for the first time it gives you chills. also towards the beginning of the film when they walk into the house you can hear the people moving around in the attic. Just some of the few subtle things about this film that make it terrifyingly genius from ari aster.

This is one of the better reactions on RUclips!! A few things, after the funeral in the beginning, you can hear foot steps in the house. Later, Steve asks 'what's that smell?' when they walk in. When Peter is smoking in the window, he is being watched. Annie didn't touch the paint that spilled, it was sitting on that seance flyer. Joan's son and grandson didn't die, when she met Annie at the store, she was buying that chalkboard, it wasn't her grandson's. Peter's posture before banging his face was the same pose as Paimon and his staff/ and Charlie's bashed face. There are naked cult members in the yard during that day to night cut in the 3rd act. You'll hear Annie tip the piano over for the wire when Peter is waking up to find Steve. At least one of the cult members in the tree house at the end is a buddy of Peter's from school. Let me know if you need more info!

      Wow thank you!

    • @BJMurphy
      @BJMurphy 5 месяцев назад +5

Regarding Peter's posture before banging his face, it's actually done to make it seem like he's being partially marionetted. Notice how his right arm is being lifted by his wrist and how his whole right side of his face is also being lifted, like a marionettist would with a marionette.
Now recall the very beginning of the film, where it did that marvelous transition from doll house to actual house. It's the running theme throughout the film, illustrating possession in the form of puppetry.
Peter smashing his face was the marionettist-Paimon-unable to take full possession of Peter because he wasn't traumatized/made susceptible to influence enough. So it played hot potato with the blood relatives (decapitation required, apparently, in order for Paimon to jump ship), until all obstacles were taken care of and Peter susceptible enough for total possession.
      Brilliant fucking film!

    • @justinrichards7822
      @justinrichards7822 5 месяцев назад +2

That's great insight, thank you. That shooters Peter's classroom lecture/discussion is on that same theme - whether it's more tragic for a character to be aware that they have no control of their situations.

You have to remember the name of the film is “Hereditary”. The grandmother was the Queen of the cult. Paimon had to be a male AND blood related to the Queen. Her son hung himself saying his mother was trying to put someone inside him. Her husband (grandfather) had to die because he was of no use to get to the ultimate goal. Charlie’s father could burn because he was of no blood relation to the Queen, as well.
That body with no head that had turned black was the grandmother, not Charlie. Throughout the whole film, the only desecration discussed was the grandmother’s grave.
What I found funny was the magical, ever-expanding treehouse! At the beginning, there was only enough room for Charlie and a space heater. Then mom started sleeping there and she could be fully stretched out with two space heaters. At the end, there was the statue of Paimon with Charlie’s head on it, Dead bowing grandmother, dead bowing mother, Joanie and a whole bunch of naked people… all fitting comfortably with plenty of room to spare.
Everyone to this day says the biggest mistake the Academy voters made was not nominating and giving Toni Collette the Oscar… but I understand why. This was released like in May or June of the year. If you want someone nominated, you release the film in October, September at the earliest. A horror movie released around Easter or early summer? That’s a rare occurrence. Toni was a lock in, until other films came out and erased it from people’s minds.
One of most effective shots was at Charlie’s graveside funeral. It was a far away shot of the family and casket in frame with Toni Collette earning an Oscar. The casket is being lowered into the ground and the camera tracks its decent and keeps going down into the ground, giving you the view of what you would see, if you could see, what it is like to be lowered into your grave, becoming entrapped in the earth… forever. And there’s nothing you can do about it. Now you know what it is like to be buried. Brilliant!

This was filmed in Utah, so that's why it's so sparse and has wide open areas with homes in the middle of nowhere. Alex Wolff and Milly Shapiro before filming were there in Utah, and were to hang out with each other and for Milly to try and be difficult and embarrassing for Wolff while out in public. So they had this negative and disgruntled relationship already established, which you can kind of see during the party scene. Milly Shapiro has a very rare condition called cleidocranial dysostosis, it effects the bones and teeth, but also can cause those that have it to appear younger than they really are. Milly was 15 when they filmed the movie and was 17 when the film came out in theaters.

Would say Annie does the recreation of the accident scene in miniature form to kinda distance herself from what happened. We see it in a lot of the miniature settings she makes over the movie that she's processing past events through her art, trying to distance herself from them on some level by literally shrinking them down, but it doesn't always work, such as with the one where the figurine of her mother is framed by the camera as appearing taller over Annie, giving Annie pause.

Maybe the real hereditary factor was the inability to parent and simply hurt others :D The mothers in both generations were hellbent on inflicting damage to their loved ones. While one was involving her family in a Satanic ritual, the other had latent murderous tendencies. While maybe seen as in effort to 'save' her children, her sleepwalking actions were telling. Her choice of building miniatures were extremely disturbing too. The accident recreation scene, the apparition in her bedroom, and a decapitated Steve (maybe it was Peter) miniatures were what I thought was indicative of her mental state and she never sought to discuss this with her psychiatrist husband/a professional that could help.

Great reaction. I'd heard of King Paimon somewhere before this. So ended up geeking out a little finding out about him. The lore this film uses is pretty much spot on. A few fun bits the film changed:
The book you see is even one of the few books containing lore of Paimon (12th century), they just changed the title of the book.
King Paimon is actually 1 of 9 kings of Hell. So the thing about needing to face in a certain way is incorrect.
The other change is the beheadings. His lore contains nothing about that. The reason it was included was the art work you see in the book. He has 3 heads hanging from his belt. So they changed that. But it adds a Lot of extra scare.
Hope that helps you guys sleep a little more soundly.
Hope everyone is having a great week & much love to everyone from here in the UK

The director did Midsonmar as well. It's good but I just kinda didn't buy the premise, so I wasn't as impressed. This movie here, I would put up with The Thing, Exorcist, the shining, a few others. How Toni Collette didn't win an Oscar for this, is beyond me! A bit of horror truth, when he smashed his face in the desk, he was supposed to hit padding but didn't. His face looking all dislocated, was real! Also Peter's first class, is the same subject from the original Holloween, and the trailer for this came out the same day, the Halloween reboot did!😮😮😮Another callback is during their seance, the clock stops, callback to exorcist! What was hereditary in this family wasn't mental illness, it was Grandma and proly those before her, driving family members insane, with their satanic/cult worship! Charlie was already possessed, represented by the clicks. Heard while she was alive, and after she died, BEFORE the seance. I would say, joan tried sacrificing her son and grandson. Either they killed themselves, or she killed them. Seems if Paimon is not happy with a body it is in, it has to die and be beheaded, so paimon can leave the body, i say it happened to dear old grandma, and definitely happened to Annie and Charlie! I just noticed a weird parallel...the biggest foreshadowing...when the dad gets charlie from the treehouse to go to the funeral, she standing up in the corner, and the camera view is from below slightly like shes twisting and floating!!!! Then In the almost final scenes, the mom is up in the corner of charlies room then floats away, then is up in the corner, above peter, as he's looking at his burned dad!😮 And finally, charlie is back where we first met her, hanging in the treehouse! Biblically speaking, u NEVER want to conjure someone who is dead...this NEVER goes well! King Saul conjured the spirit of the profit, and all went downhill real fast!
Anyone notice in mom's room, triangle on the floor. The mirror? Like absolutely zero reflection?😮😮😮😮. For me, I just couldn't by into Midsonmar, so I thought it was stupid. But u may like it. His next was with Joaquin Phoenix, in I think called, Beau is afraid. The Oscars ought to before themselves on this one! She has been a top ten actor, male or female, for 30 years! The mom in 6th sense, this, knives out, a offbeat comedy with Cameron Diaz, there's nothing she can't do! also think, every word out of grandma and Joanie's mouth was a lie. And u can bet they both killed off the male members of their families, to gain power or get Paimon into one of the male bodies. Or both. Joanie knew, if Annie did a seance, by herself or with family, she would let Paimon/Charlie loose in her house, because Annie had zero idea how to end a seance, or send demons back to where they came from. So Annie's dad was either starved by Grandma or he did it to himself purposely, to be weak and no good for a demon. Annie's brother said in his suicide note, Grandma was putting people inside him. And Joanie? Probably herself, drowned her son and grandson! Also after Charlie's death, the mom goes to sleep in the treehouse, watch the wall when the camera zoom pulls backwards!😮😱

Charlie was never a little girl she was paimon the whole time stuck in a female body which paimon didn’t want but Annie wouldn’t let the grandma get close to Peter

ya got incredible instincts and attention!
the paint falls by itself to draw annie's focus to joan's note at 16:54
the transition shows the naked cultists approaching at night at 35:24
and yeah, thinking that light was paimon the whole time.
the smiling man from the beginning - yup
it was a plan the whole time
also there was mail that was left inside the mail slot - check what that was about

Maybe most significantly, they unfortunately missed “the corner” at 35:40. I wish reactors in general would be able to watch this movie on a bigger, brighter screen because so many of them miss that. Some even miss the early appearance of grandma’s apparition and just dismiss it. Still a great reaction though, just unfortunate that they didn’t get the full experience.

We're watching on a 55" tv 3 feet away from our face. But the studio lighting I guess was enough of a reflection for us not to see

@@RelaxwithJC I truly didn’t mean for it to sound like a complaint, I know it’s very difficult to light yourselves for a reaction and still catch everything in a movie that is as darkly lit as this one often is.

I only watched Hereditary because of Toni. She is an excellent actress. But the plot tainted her talent.
